When you compare that Seville to its predecessor, it was a great step. Much like the CTS. The trunk apparently had room (I never looked in one). That Seville look was mimicked my the Chysler--which car was it?

I believe the bustleback was a ripoff of prewar Rolls design, it is more of a sharp "razors edge" than a Cloud. The previous Seville was very plain and elegant in comparison. I don't see elegance in the bustleback, I see comical ostentatiousness. But compared to that little Seville that followed...

The Chrysler that copied it was the Imperial Coupe, 1981-83.

My college roommate dated a girl that owned an Olds with that type of rear end. I didn't like that one, either.

Who had that type of rearend? The girlfriend or the car?

The car, otherwise I'm not sure he would have ended up marrying her. ;)

The Olds was a Cutlass... it was ugly, as well...

I liked the first generation Seville.. It was one of the first cars in the '70s with the "formal" roof line..

Aah yeah the Olds "Aeroback" - like the Seville without the trunk hump. A big failure in the market.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...the 1982-87 Lincoln Continental, it aped the look of the Seville as well.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 266,424
The Town Car or the Mark VII?

I know the Mark VII had the fake tire hump, but I sure don't see any of the Seville rear styling in that..

And see the picture of the '86 model. You will see a slight Seville reference to the rear styling

I always thought that was funny. A real spare is one thing, but those pathetic fake ones?

Sheesh. No wonder buyers started flocking to the imports.

possibly the best styled domestic of the 1970s. It had a clean classy look that gave no hint of the Nova platform underneath>

IMO the second Gen was a giant step backwards. When I said they were rip-offs of Silver Clouds I had in mind the James Young-bodied Clouds and Phantom Vs which often featured razor-edged styling.

    You decide.>>

I hate remembering the models on these. Is it a Brava? Mid 70's in any case.

That first one looks just like a Carprice to me. Not nearly enough differentiation back then. CTS is so much more than any Chevy sedan today.

...has a longer rear deck and overhang. It pulls that look off better than the shorter deck of the Seville.
  • negativenegative Member Posts: 107
Yes, a 131. I think they renamed it the Brava in the late '70's just before they pulled out altogether from the U.S. market.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,446
Yeah, I think it became the Brava around 1980, right before the train derailed in NA.

I recall seeing a Brava wagon around when I was in high school in maybe 1994-95...even then I was amazed at its survival.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
I don't recall the Brava wagon, but yes the Brava AFAIK was the NA version of the 131.

    Another one from the 70s>>

    '76 Ford Maverick.

In its last few years, from the front, the Maverick become tough to distinguish from the Mercury Comet, because Ford moved the front turn signals from the bumper to the grille, where the Comet already had them.

I could be sure if I saw a shot of the rear. The Maverick had the taillights and backup lights in one assembly; the Comet used two.

Right Negative. I'd forgotten how much better the 4-dr. Mav looked even though everyone bought two doors w the sloping back.

I'll take a whack only because I had a Matchbox car that looked something like it. British Ford Zephyr, early '60's?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 266,424
Lol... I was just thinking of how dorky the four-door looked, compared to the 2-door.. ;)

I guess it's because when I was in school (during the Maverick's tenure), we thought everything with four-doors was dorky..

Now... I really want a wagon.. I guess that is what age does to you..

Here's that Fiat 131 wagon...I bet this is one you don't want

4817 is a Vauxhall from the mid 60s, I can't recall the name.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yep it's a '63 Vauxhall Viva. Now that I see the 131/Brava wagon I know I've seen 'em before.

Yeah Kfdyx, it's funny how four door cars were looked down on in the 70s whereas now you can't find many that come with only two. You'd think the average family size had gone up instead of down.

Id say something from the studios of pininfarina.

You're getting warm el2000, the red car is a close relative of one of Pininfarina's most ground-breaking designs the Cisitalia 202 of 1947. The red car pictured is a 1953 Cisitalia 203.

Looks to be a Ford t-bird emblem on the valve cover, so I'll say it's an old T-bird, something with a short front end.

Was it a 292 or 312 cu in motor? I believe the Thunderbirds had 312s then. I had a 57 (Ford) with a 292 but it was not the biggest-312 was an option. I drag-raced a 312 in a 56 Ford and won with the 292. I hate to even remember parts of the past like those things I did!

Ooh 312, I forgot that one.

There was also a 332 wasn't there? Ford and their "2" engines.

The 60 Ford my dad had was a 352 I am pretty sure. The parts car I bought when I had the delusion of fixing my wrecked Galaxie was also a 352...66 was the last year for that one maybe.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,680
With the 272, 292, 312 it just happened to hit my era or Ford familiarity. The 272 was in the Custom models and 292 in Fairlane models in '57. 292 apparently was an option too.

I didn't remember a 332 but you're right. I was looking up the 352 because I thought that was in the 58 Ford as a Police Interceptor. Were some a souped up model sold to the public?

I wonder how much they charged for that extra 20 cu in because of the connotation with Thunderbird. My buddy had the 312 in similar body; it had a four-barrel IIRC.

I think the 332 is relatively rare, yes. The 352 was the highline engine for a very short time until the 390/406 came out, IIRC. It soldiered on for several years.

The ad says it's a 312 CID motor in that T-Bird.

when i was a kid in hong kong (early 70's). There were mb taxis that were about the size of a modern day corolla(probably a bit wider). I am quite sure it's not a 200 series (uncle has one). I thought the early 90's c class was mb's first compact car, pls shed some light on this one.

Those taxis were not very popular, as the other choice is the yota crown.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,446
This is probably what you are thinking of, a W114/115 made from 1968-1975 or so. This was the smallest MB of the period, and replaced the lowline fintail. These were very durable very plain cars.

    image
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
thanks, but I think it's a bit smaller than the one in the picture.(could be perception)

It also have a column stick shift and the grill is not that profound. I'll try to google some pictures

I also rode in a bigger mb taxi once when I was a kid, but I think that one got fintails. I rememeber vividly it was a bigger mb cause my fat uncle (r.i.p.),myself, my nephew and niece all fit in the back. We rode the taxi to see the new Bruce Lee flick - Return of the Dragon :D . Glad they didn't have movie ratings back then.
