I think it might be perception. As far as I know a W114/115 wouldn't have a column shift. But a fintail could.

Here's a lowline (W110) fintail. These were made from 1961-68 and were extremely durable, especially in diesel form. They are still on the road as taxis in some harsh areas. These were probably very common during the time period you mention.

    image

Here's what came before, a lowline ponton. These were used as taxis too. These were made ca. 1954-61.

    image

That 220 andy posted was actually a higher line model when it was new, and likely was never used as a taxi. The lowline then would have been a 170 - probably too old for the time period you mention. This is a prewar style car made through about 1953 with some revisions.

are you implying that I'm senile?

    fintail:

The first pic you have is the big mb taxi I rode to see the Bruce Lee flick. I looked up the W 114/115 220 (probably is the one you posted) and it looked very close to what I remember, but I remember :confuse: the taxi does not have those type of tail lights (the ones with slots),it had the older type tail lights and it definitely had a column stick. But the rest of the 220 interior I googled is exactly the one I remembered. Padded steering hubs, not too many cars have them.

But thanks anyways for your info, I'll know who to go to whenever I have an mb related question.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,626
No problem. And yeah, those padded wheels are very much MB of the 60s, they didn't last much longer.

but absolutely a '63-'67 Vette. With a really tacky aftermarket steering wheel.

Might be a later year because of the seatbelts? Not sure when they appeared.

Right on the nose, it's a slushbox '67 with a 427 under the hood. Of four '67 'Vettes in Hemmings every one of them had a 427 which is odd because back in the day 427 motors came in less than 10% of Corvettes IIRC.

Somebody in GM's design department loved that double-pod dashboard, because it showed up in lots of early-60s Chevys.

Looks like a '73 Ford Torino Gran Sport to me (or was it a Gran Torino Sport). I think the '73 had the 5mph front bumper but a regular rear bumper. If my eyes were better I could read the model! BigW.

ugly mullet car any more. I need to see something nicer:

Grand Torino Sport is the correct name IIRC and you have the right year.

Bumpy, your car looks like a Mitsu or Infiniti. It's very familiar looking but I just can't pin it down.

looks like some sort of Nissan JDM product....

It's a Nissan from the early 90s, I think the name was Laurel or something.

    Nissan Cefiro! :D
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
We have a winner! This one is a '92. That generation Cefiro was basically a LWB Skyline with more conservative styling. Later Cefiros were Maximas with upscale interiors and sold here as the Infiniti I30/35.

I wanted a glasstop like that when I was 15 or so, I thought they were very cool. Not usual tastes for a kid in 1992. I can live without the continental kit though.

Well.. it is a 911.. Hard to tell the year, though the new ones have gone back to that style of headlight... Maybe some sort of special edition, as it has some kind of fixed body color spoiler... I'll guess a 911 turbo, but still not sure of the year...

    Lotus Elan S2?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Has not aged as well as other roadsters from that era IMO.

    That's correct, it's a '68 Elan Series 4 SE/ FHC.

Juice, IMO the Elan which came out around the same time as the MGB, TR-4 and the Healey 3000 has held up much better than those over time. It's lines are nicely reprised in the current Miata/MX-5.

It's true that the oh so yesterday pop-up h/ls make the Elan seem dated but two round headlights are also passe.

Looks like a Studebaker but the emblem above the grille seems to be the winged Bentley logo.

    That, plus the UK plates!

No idea on the model name.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,756
plus, the front fender (behind the wheel) with the vent looks very Aston-Martin DB4ish.

Actually, so do the rear fenders, so I guess it is a DB4, converted to a 4 door stretch, with a gawd awful nose grafted on.

I remember someone created a 4 door '70s vintage Vette once. I think it might have looked better than this car!

Lagonda something or other, connected to Aston
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,756
I was closer than I thought if it is the early version of the Lagonda!

I remember there was also the Rapide as well, which I thought was a 4 door Aston.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
1964 Lagonda Rapide (the B suffix on the plate gives the year) -

This is my first reply as Magnette, but I've been here before as Fiatowner, although thats for my work e-mail address, whereas I'm at home on this one.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
That's it Kev, the Lagonda Rapide was built on the DB-4 chassis from '61-'64 or so.
They made about 55 all told. The name "Lagonda Rapide" harks back to a car that won LeMans back in the 30s.

A-M showed a four door Aston-Martin Rapide at the NAIAS this year.

    If anyone is still interested.......
The tank in the background is a Churchill, ww2 vintage - and its one of ours, old chap.....they built about 6000 I think - most of them were made by Vauxhalls in 1941-43, I think, but to be honest it's just about the only tank I would recognise, as I built a kit of one as a kid.
