Just ahead of the '64 Merc is what I think is a '62 Chevy and to the left of the Dodge cube truck, I see a '59 Ford wagon and I see a tan gen I Corvair 2dr behind that '60 Olds in the left of the photo (rightmost lane).

    About a 1970 280SE? Don't ask me for a W model designation!

Too easy :) I'll let others try.

I also saw the source of the pic, an apparently very low mileage original car. If it is what it claims to be, it is kind of special for that.

Yup, it's a 280SE all right, 1972 MY. The internal designation was W108, remember that because the 108 and the similar (longer WB) W109 may have been the best Benzes ever made and the best made cars of their time.

    A buddy of mine has a 1969 280SE.

    Fiat 130 coupe

Easy hint on W108 vs W109 - W109 has full chrome window/door frame trim. W108 has a thinner outline around the window.

    seriously? LOL
Only differences between that and mine is the chrome fender trim and that one apparently has the 426 hemi vs my 440.
What I do find interesting is the passenger sideview mirror. I don't have one, nor do I have holes to mount one.

    It was probably an option.

My '82 Accord only had a driver's side mirror. Passenger side was $58 dealer installed accessory, but then you have to lean all the way over the car to adjust it, so I passed.

Passenger mirrors were technically options on many cars into the 80s, right?

My purchased new 1980 diesel VW Rabbit had no passenger side mirror.

Many but not all. Before the 80s I had to buy an aftermarket mirror to install on the passenger side. I recall going to a lot of trouble to match the color of my '71 Fiat 124 Spider.

I wouldn't dream of going out in modern traffic w/o two side mirrors. The first car I got that came w 2 mirrors was an '83 VW GTI but they had to be adjusted by hand. :(
My first power mirrors were on an '87 Saab 9000T. B)

Was the passenger mirror optional on the GTI?

They were optional on the fintail (fairly uncommon option), and I don't recall any of the old Fords my dad had back in the day wearing one. I think they were optional on at least earlier MB W123, but standard from W124/126 onward, at least in this market.

Seems like my '77 Cobra II had a passenger side mirror.

    Yup that is indeed a '67 Dodge Coronet R/T / 426 (Hemi).

426 Powered cars are pretty rare. I think because the 426 Hemi was basically a (drag) race engine with multiple carbs, a hot cam, a lot of noise and a lumpy idle and generally wasn't well suited for day-to-day driving. 440s are nearly as fast and much nicer for commuting and day trips or so I've read.

My '83 GTI came with the passenger mirror standard, I'm pretty sure. I thing the opening vent wings were like $50 or so additional.

That's because it's looked the same for a century.... well since 1997. New one coming out next year which like it's predecessors takes bits and pieces of boring-looking cars and combines them to make a REALLY boring-looking car.

The make may be obvious to you but it's a mystery to us. The NL oval on the back made me think it .could be a DAF, possibly a version of the DAF 46 or 66.

Other than that, it could be some sort of Citroen. :(

The NL is a red herring as this one happened to be registered in Holland but it is a Citroen and has an engine of a different design built by a consortium with another make - who were developing this engine type...

I looked inside. It was tight. I don't recall being surprised by the steering being on the "wrong" side of the car, so I'm guessing it's left hand drive.

    Hi Fintail

Yes the Citroen is an M35 - they built a couple of hundred with a rotary engine built in conjunction with NSU and with bodywork by Heulitz but based on the Ami 8 - they were made 1969/71.

They weren't exactly on sale but were given to drivers on long term test but the project would up after a couple of years - a bit like the Chrysler Turbine car except Citroen didn't scrap them all and quite a few survive.

The grey van is an Austin A40 Countryman - based on the commercial version of the Devon initially but outliving it and the Somerset this was still made until late 1955 I think.
ere I grew up a chap up the street had one of these for some years.
The grille is from the earlier version and was changed in about 1953 I think to one with thicker bars .

Dinky Toys did a number of versions of the van...

That's it. The year is given as 1954. When I found pictures, the grill didn't match up.

I found it in this group of pictures, Simon cars.

Good spotting. I also thought it was either a TR2 or a TR3 "small mouth". ('55-57) The TR2 grill was quite recessed, more so than the TR3 Small mouth. We may never know, as both had their grilles between the signal lights and not extending below the headlights.

Yes - they adopted the commercial van grille in late 53 which differed from the old Devon grille.

EDIT - I think the later grille came in 1952 as this is a brochure picture which is said to be from then..
