That's it Michaell, it's a '64 Ford Thunderbird convertible. I'm not a big fan of four seat 'Birds but the '64 convertible is surely the best looker.

Wasn't that also the year of the T-Bird used in Thelma and Louise?

Nice, there's an old MB in the background too, parked between a Taurus and a mid 80s Civic. It appears to be a W109 300SEL, by the full chrome window frames - a somewhat rare car.

That car was featured on Jay Leno's Garage last week.

A typical '64 T-Bird convertible is work about $50K. Because the car featured was one used in the movie shoot, multiply the value by 4.

That would be an atypical Thunderbird convertible--perhaps a concours-level car that you would never see on the street.

Absolutely appearance in a well-known movie will be a value multiplier, and especially that one.

Appropos of our recent discussion about Fender spats (AKA skirts) they really work well on '64 TBirds, and most of the 4seaters.

If the spats are missing on that car, it really does look awful for some reason.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,161
Cars that were designed from the get-go with them seem to look ok, and bad without. It's the add-ons that really look bad to me (often seen in the company of a 'Continental kit')...
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 269,281
We had them on DeVilles and Lincolns... Without them, looked like a piece of trim was missing. The edges of the wheel well were designed for them to fit, and weren't "finished" without them.

Pro TIP: don't back over one, after changing a tire.. :(

Olds 98 and Buick 225 also had them, same thing. Usually no problem getting them off at the gas station, but some come in pretty rusting/packed with dirt, hard to get the lever free to remove them.

1966 Triumph TR-4A identical to the one I bought in '67 and to this day that might be the nicest dash I ever had. In retrospect it might've been the nicest feature of the whole car (I miss analog dials!).

Pre-66 TR-4s had metal instead of wood dashes. After '67 (TR-250/5/6) they went to a much lighter wood that wasn't as attractive IMO.

Mine was this color but had disc wheels >

All the TR love is interesting to me because I had a love hate/relationship with my '66 TR-4A.
I loved the styling and the way it drove and I didn't mind how primitive it was but the downside was reliability which was extremely poor. Almost everything electrical broke at least once and lots of other stuff as well.

Then there was the time it tried to kill me when a brake line broke as I was heading for a steel wall on the Queensborough/59thSt Bridge. A quick downshift and hand braking saved my butt but things were never the same afterwards.

All that said when I see a nice restored one there's a part of me that still wants one. :o

My first time driving a stickshift any distance was an early '70s Spitfire with no bonnet. My friend had to take the car and the hood to the body shop. He drove the pickup with the hood, and I drove the Spitfire. It was about 15 miles, through town. I think the farthest I'd ever gone was about a mile, before that (in that pickup, with column shift).

1990 or so Coupe DeVille, with the "full Florida" (or NJ/NY) package that beset most of these cars.

Volvo wagon is easy. I’ll shoot for 760, because of taller grill. Somewhere in late 80s.

Just saw an article explaining the diagonal bar on Volvo grills. Started out as a mounting bar for the logo, they just kept using it.

I don't believe there is a way to distinguish the 760 from the 740 from the outside. As far as I know, they only differed by options.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

Heck, could even be a 940, I think.

Yes, the wheels threw me, too. Seems like an 80s design, which would eliminate the 940, but I can't be sure.

That's a 740. I know because I blew one up :p A car of iffy reliability at best, with a cranky turbo. The 760 was worse, with the PRV V-6 from France or a clattering old diesel. Not Volvo's finest hour.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,827

The Hamburg numberplate gives it away - BMW 503 - late 50s.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I'll take it! Oh, wait, I don't have $350,000 handy.

This early postwar BMW 503 was a very exclusive car back then, made in small numbers--only 413 coupes and convertibles. Aside from some putt-putts and a few 507 roadsters, BMW wasn't building many "real" cars in the 50s. They did build a boatload of those Isettas, though. I guess it's the best they could do, recovering from The Great Unpleasantness.

They did differ by year. You could get the 760 with the same turbo 4 as the turbo 740. Go figure. As for appearance, there are some years that you would swear was the same car as a different model of a different year.

    For example... '93 940:

    '90 740:

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess and I think it's a beautiful car, if I had seen one back in 1958 or so I'd have felt it even more.

The 503 like the 502 and the 507 did not sell well and was wicked expensive to make and by the late 50s BMW was nearly taken over by the Daimler-Benz but was rescued by the Quandt family who came up with the cash they needed to develop the very successful Neue Klasse lines
