Just looked at the new Motortrend. They had a long term update on their 2000 Toyota Tundra. Flawless so far.

My parent's '98 Chevy went in today for a scheduled oil change. It has to go back tomorrow for an oil leak somewhere.

If you want me to give you examples of Toyota trucks going near 400,000 miles, I could...but it's not worth the time.
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
If ya want them examples of big3 ones goin 400,000++ miles, just use your eyes now. Look around, ya see them big3 ones from them 50s,60s,70s,80s,90s, .... use ya eyes on this one now. Dont need too give ya no example, just look about now. Good luck on this one now!
  • rooster9rooster9 Member Posts: 239
That doesn't prove anything. They may be old, but that doesn't mean they're high mileage. Our '87 Bonneville only has 110,000 miles. That's not a whole lot for that old of a car. Most of those old ones didn't see long distance trips or weren't used as daily transportation. They would use the car instead.

seen those kind of miles!!! And you know it. If they do they definitely aren't on the same engine!!! Every red-blooded american knows people who own GM trucks swap 350's in and out like Toyota owners rotate tires!!! Talk about a throw away engine! I swear that has to be most out of date and over used engine on the market.

I had 2 GM product, a '95 Vette and a '96 Trans Am and both had the LT-1, ie 350ci. Both had oil leaks!!! Gm fixed the TA, but I traded the Vette on a '98 Tacoma. So explain that, trucksrme!! Yeah, yeah, yeah I know, you can't other than your same old BS!! You must don't have a life because I see your posts on every Tundra topic. If everyone don't believe me check for yourself. The man, woman, boy, girl, or whatever it is has a envy streak of the Tundra like I have never seen!!! Were you fired from a Toyota factory or something?? Because all the problems YOU SAY the Tundra has I have yet to see since I've had mine!!

Seriously, though what gives with you and the Tundra? It is a nice truck that everyone seems to enjoy. Sure it's not as big, but most people don't need all that truck, I know that I don't. If I did I would have bought a F-150. Is the Tundra better than any one of the big 3? For all the owners of Tundras, the answer is "YES!"

So relax, I am beginning to think you're some kind of psycho who has the desire to sneak out at night and damage every Tundra in sight!!! You're like some Tundra serial killer are you? You may need to be investigated! Everyone keep your Tundras under a watchful eye, there's a psycho on the loose and his screen name is trucksrme and various other aliases. Be careful all Tundra owners!

Them big3 ones be seein them type high miles all the time now. And ya be right, when them engines and trannies be worn down from years of workin em, all ya got too do is swap em out for some new ones, go right on back too workin em for years more! Them forien ones be the throw aways now. This be why ya see them big3 cars and trucks still on the road after 30 or 40 years now. Cant be sayin that one on them forien ones. This be the fact, twist it anyway ya wantin now, but the eyes be providin that truth on it. Good luck on this one now!

Get this through your head: Chevy and hyundai are completely different and unrelated companies.

Never put Chevy and hyundai in the same sentence.

You're darn tootin'! Can't be dissin' that Hyundai now.

My local Chevy dealer share the building with Hyundai, I think the people that buys Korean have the same standards as the one that buys Chevy

    LOL
  • fordsrmefordsrme Member Posts: 22
Chevy's don't compare here to them Fords.

Chevy's be looking like lowriders put next to a nice 4x4 FORD!

    The BEST never REST!

you need to relocate your posts...topic is about tundras, not the trucks you have mentioned...or you can have Edmunds do it for you. Have a good one...
  • xspechtxspecht Member Posts: 27
Tundras are god's gift to trucks, they are the greatest of all time, 2nd to none, the top dog, etc. I could go on and on.
  • dogsterdogster Member Posts: 94
If you believe domestics can get 300,000 to 400,000 miles out of their trucks with the original engine and drivetrains, well would you like to buy some waterfront property in Arizona? Come on TrucksRme. What kind of crops are you growing and smoking on that farm anyway?
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
Ya got smoke in them eyes now? Them big3 ones be gettin that type of miles all the time now. Why ya think they sell so many of em? Cuz folks know ya can work em, and they be lastin, that be why. Unlike the yuppie, them that work em, tend too keep em too. Speakin of "waterfront" property, and gettin tricked, who was it that got tricked on that "size" of em now? Good luck on this one now!

I have a Ford f-150 and have 150,000 miles and running strong and never have changed the oil even once. I haven't had one problem, not even a bettery and have kept all four stock tires on for 150,000 miles without any tread wear.
There is no need to change oil in there Ford's. The way the engine is put togather you don't get parts friction very much, so run out oil works fine. Save money on them oil changes and get yourself an F-150.
  • superjim2000superjim2000 Member Posts: 314
150,000 and never changed the oil, I dont believe it. It's impossible. I know of two vehicles who's owners thought the "100,000" mile maintenance free meant you didnt do anything for 100,000 miles but got a big surprise when @20,000 miles the engines had to be rebuilt because they never changed the oil.

I'm not saying Ford doesnt build a good truck, but theres no way you have 150,000 on the original oil.
  • superjim2000superjim2000 Member Posts: 314
That last post was good for a laugh. Thanx
  • fordsrmefordsrme Member Posts: 22
Ya see here after about 100k miles or so, oil started to burn about a quart a month. I add oil and it does the oil changes for me. Once this start happening, no need for oil changes. Still no problems whatsoever after 150K miles. It's a 97 XL that I drive out of state every weekend on business.
  • tinindianatinindiana Member Posts: 46
    Your name should be "idiotisme"
  • rooster9rooster9 Member Posts: 239
Reason why it burns a quart a month: YOU'VE NEVER CHANGED THE OIL!!
  • fordsrmefordsrme Member Posts: 22
I changed the oil up until 120K when it started burning that oil, after that it's free oil changes for life. People just don't get it.
  • xspechtxspecht Member Posts: 27
What about the oil filter, you ever change that?
  • superjim2000superjim2000 Member Posts: 314
    So what is it?

"I have a Ford f-150 and have 150,000 miles and
running strong and never have changed the oil even
    once. "

    OR

"I changed the oil up until 120K"

    ???????????????????????????????????
  • fordsrmefordsrme Member Posts: 22
I changed the oil there once every 15K miles until 120K miles. That's all them Fords need. They have one of thee best engineered engines here now in the world. I wouldn't advice now not changing your oil, but it worked for me now and I've saved some bucks.

1993 I purchased a new Ford 150. 67,000 miles later I began to have engine trouble plus smaller
items such as replaced the starter and alternator twice. Smaller stuff started to mess up inside the cab that drove me crazy. $1400 spent on engine repair alone within 3 years, convinced me to sell the piece of crap.

1997 Purchased a new Chevy Silverado. didn't give me as much problem as the Ford did, however the
paint seemed too thin and big areas on my hood
and fenders started flaking off within two years.

Purchased a new Tundra November of 1999. Still drives like a dream and hasn't givin me a lick
of problems. My son drives a 1991 Toyota Tacoma
that has never been to the mechanic for the exception of general maintenance ie.. (brakes,
battery, belts) currently has 214,000 miles
on it. That alone convinced me to buy Toyota.

I know how you guys feel about your Ford and
Chevy trucks because I was just like you. You're probably the kind of guys that have
those stickers of Calvin peeing on the Chevy
    emblem or vise versa.

Take my word for it, The Chevy and Ford trucks I purchased what have never lasted me over
100,000 miles without draining my pocket book
    first.

I challenge you to a simple test that proves my
opinion. Visit your local used car dealers
and compare a 10 year old Chevy or Ford truck/car
and compare it to any 10 year old Toyota.
History speaks louder than anybody here...

Can't comment on Dodge trucks personally, but
have some friends that have similar problems with them.
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
A 10 year old toy? They all be used up in 10 year now. Use your eyes on this one. Ever wonder why there aint no such thing as them "classic" toys now? They all be used up. And ya right on one thing now, them toys wont ever "nickel and dime" ya, as them parts be costin a whole lot more than that on them forien ones than that, thats if ya can even get em, that is. Use your eyes on this one. Good luck on this one now!

There used to be a club for people with high-mileage Toyota trucks back in the 80s. I am sorry, but Toyotas have a LOT better reputation of reliabliity than Chevrolet and Ford combined. The new Silverados just came out and already have a TSB calling for replacement of the ENGINE for god sake. The Tundra is a better truck in terms of reliability than the Americans, but it doesn't work as hard. If you read the Tundra article right here on Edmund's.com, you will see the explanation of why there is only one size of the Tundra.

I am sorry, but I would rather have a Toyota than 3 Chevrolets or Fords. At least they have proven longevity.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Nah...This is post-purchase blues because your truck comes from a car maker. Toyota hasn't learned how to build them, just look at the size. Many, many more examples of high mileage domestic trucks. Any truck given the kind of pampered care a Toyota sees will last a long time. Since they are worked hard, few of them do.
  • superjim2000superjim2000 Member Posts: 314
    1990 huh?
No dealer around here has or wants a '90 vehicle to sell. Unless you visit the fly by night operations 20 miles away but who wants to deal with them?

    Not me.
  • oldharryoldharry Member Posts: 413
aren't really popular around here, I have only had a few of them in the shop since January. Even the "full size" imports aren't big enough for the box mounted fuel tanks and other stuff the farmers around here carry. They do have good fit and finish, however, and I see them driven by men in business suits or shirts and ties.

Them yuppies just be lovin them forien ones now. They aint no good too them that work em, as they be breakin quick if put too the haul. Good luck on this one now!
  • fordsrmefordsrme Member Posts: 22
If you want shine and toughness and work them, just purchase they ol' F-150 now. This is the best of the trucks as most people now are starting to realize ever since I came around here. They also have the biggest backseat. Many people think the good ol' Chevy has the biggest bag seat, but you see that's not the truth. The truth is the Chevy has the largest backseat WINDOW which makes the truck appear larger now than it is now. You see the Ford's design is so slick that it has the smallest back window now so it don't look ugly, but the largest backseat. Here's some proof now. My buddy at Lowe's has a GMC 2500 Sierra now and has 2 kids that are tall poles now they be about 6'5. Their leggy and fit OK in the back of their pickup now, but I gave them a lift in my F-150 and they said "S#it damn, this is more comfy now than my father's truck you see." So there you;s goes
  • 47ironblock247ironblock2 Member Posts: 12
hey, you never answered my question regarding where all the final ASSY plants are for the GM pick-ups and full size SUVs. You seem to be fairly knowledgeable about GM. Have you checked out all your friends doors on them 99's and up?? Well?? Where are ALL the final ASSY plants located?? Don't be twisting nothing about size or buck and crap. Tell me where ALL the GM pick-ups are built! Assembled where?? Simple question sir.
  • 47ironblock247ironblock2 Member Posts: 12
Yuppie, bought less truck for buck, don't work em' and be listening to them magazines. So, back to MY question. Where are all the GM pick-ups built? Bet you be not answering that one. Forget the questions about which truck is a better buy and which is bigger. Where are ALL the GM Pick- Up ASSY plants located? Some of them GM buyers be thinking they are buying US assembled machines. You and me be knowin better now.
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
Pontiac be where Franklins be built. Some be built in St Louis, some in Canada. What be the point? Them Chevys be classfied by them Feds as US of A, based on content. Them tundras? They be classified as imported now. Fact be the fact on this one. They aint even "assembled" by UAW folks now. Guessin the yuppie not have the carin on this, but lots of folks do, includin me now. God bless America and that UAW! Keep by them forine ones, build by non-UAW folks, ya be gettin just what ya be gettin. Good luck on this one now!
  • 47ironblock247ironblock2 Member Posts: 12
Guess you not be knowing as much about them GM trucks as I thought. You forgot to add one more country to your response. I don't know if the plant is stocked with UAW folks, but I do know that it's not on US or Canadian soil.

That Tundra be assembled on US soil. Ya can't be saying that for ALL them GM trucks now.
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
If ya had the knowin then ya be knowin the truth on it. Only one of them big3 ones that not be built in US of A, or Canada, be them Dodges, which also get built in Mexico. Them tundras be "forien" based on what them Feds be sayin. Them big3 be US of A accordin too them Feds now. Facts is facts, strech em, but they still be the fact. Them forien tundras be assembled by non UAW folks. Learn these facts, and get the knowin for ya self now. Good luck on this one now!

Hicksrme - "This be the best engine of them all
now! " He posted this about a Japanese engine.
The Isuzu Duramax. He knows who makes the best
    engines.

Better quit blowing that bottom leaf smoke. The
truth is getting out. That raging case of Tundra
envy you have is flaring up again.

He doesn't have to get just a japanese engine that he loves so much. He can get the whole vehicle - the Toyota Tundra. Made in the good ol' US of A.

Admit hicksrme - you really love japanese engineering.
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
    Chevrolet - engines - trannies - UAW assembly =
all US of A (some Canada). FED be classifin USA.

    Tundra - engines - trannies = JAPAM assembly =
non UAW. FED be classfin forien.

"Full Size" = them big3 ones. "Not Full Size" =
    them limited ones.

What part of these simple truths aint ya gettin
now? Bama, just another yuppie without the knowin
of things. Good luck on this one now!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Feds are classifying GM trucks as USA to help them look better in trade deficit (which they actually aren't doing so good in balancing). Don't you think that "Made in" is more important than "Made of"?

After the creation of the Department of Labor, do we still need unions?

Identifying by VIN numbers for GM

First number designates country of assembly plant for both GM trucks and autos:

    1,4 USA built
    2 Canadian built
    3 Mexico
    J Japan

I know I wouldn't want a truck whose VIN starts with "3" and I'm sure a lot feel that way...so why would GM build a plant there? cheap labor? avoid the UAW? Hmm.....
  • bamatundrabamatundra Member Posts: 1,583
Blowing clouds of that bottom leaf smoke.

ISUZU = Japanese designed and engineered.
GM builds Duramax which is under license to a
Japanese manufacturer. It doesn't matter where it
is built - it is a Japanese engine.

Now you have been posting about not being able to
    "work them forein ones".

Now you are posting "This be the best engine of
    them all now! "

Answer this simple question: Is ISUZU duramax a
    japanese designed and engineered engine?

You are twisting and squirming too much. Blowing
that bottom leaf smoke. Just admit it - Tundra
    envy big time!
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
What part aint ya gettin on this one? GM, ownin
that isuzu, be usin that facility as one of many
too be buildin up that US of A made Duramax. They
be build em right here in that US of A. I be sure
GM be usin lots of factorys they be ownin, in lots
of places, when farmin out work for this and that. toyota, be that "closed" system, only be usin folks like that Indianina plant too end run round that import tarif, not even payin the UAW wage on em. Now for them facts ya be needin too try too get: Accordin too them Feds, Chevy be a US of A one, tundra be a forien one. Aint that simple? Here be another for ya: Chevy be "full size", tundra be pee-wee sized. One more now: Chevy be for "workin" folks, tundra be for them yuppies chasin that fad. These are simple truths, if ya still aint gettin em, best go back too readin on it in them magazines now. Yuppies, they sure be hard too be learin simple things. Good luck on this one now!
  • redfox1redfox1 Member Posts: 42
Once again the South Carolina Village Idiot is spouting off about the size of the Tundra and that only yuppies buy Tundras. Trucksome, you never answered my question why you haven't written Consumers Report or J.D.Anderson correcting them on their labeling of the Tundra as a full size pickup truck. The fact that the Tundra is built and assembled in Indiana by non union labor speaks for itself in the quality of the work and the reliability of the finished product. The day you believe that just because an item is union made makes it automatically superior to a non-union made product, you are grossly mistaken. By the way, this topic #1584 is titled "Toyota Tundra Owners, Rate Your Truck". Are YOU a Tundra owner and if not why are you posting on this topic?
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
Aint goin be writin them yuppie magazines now. Aint got no carin on what they be thinkin on this or that. Them that work them trucks dont be needin them magazines too be figurin out the "size" of them trucks now. Why dont ya use your eyes at lookin on them trucks, rather than readin them magazines on it now? As for that UAW, God bless em, and I be thankin they be there, they be the ones keepin that freedom most folk be takin for granted now. Facts is facts, twist em this way or that, but they still be the facts now. Good luck on this one now!
  • redfox1redfox1 Member Posts: 42
Yes, facts are facts. The Toyota is the premiere pickup truck sold in the USA. You didn't answer why you are posting on a Toyota Owners board, or do YOU own a Tundra? Also, this Country won its freedom and maintained its freedom long before anybody heard of the UAW and it would be a cold day in Hades when this Country will need the UAW to keep its freedom.
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
Them ones aint even "full size", so how they goin be premiere now? Case ya aint been keepin up on them facts, that tundra be #10 in sales behind all of them big3 ones, full size and little ones includin. They aint even out-sellin them nissans now! Guessin the yuppie got that different meanin for that word "premiere" now. What does "premiere" mean too the yuppie? Does it be translatin too "Da Runt"? Reckin that be the meanin of "premiere" now, it be meanin "Da Runt". Yep, I be agreein with ya on this one, them ones be "Da Runt" for sure now. Good luck on this one now!
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I agree with you about the UAW, because when GM
was on strike in '98, I think they sabotaged a lot of vehicles to make the company look bad when talks broke down.

But if Tundra was really the premier truck,
everyone would just buy Tundras right? Plumbers,
    asphalt, construction sites, electricians, tree
service, landscaping, delivery, roofing. I think
you are forgetting that trucks were designed for
these needs, before they were made into personal
use vehicles, with smaller beds, more seating etc.

And I think that the owner of a Tundra is looking
for status. And to him, Tundra is the right symbol for that. And to a greater degree, the owner of a Lexus or Land Cruiser is simply looking for even more. So you could say everyone, is looking for the right amount to be comfortable with. I think all trucks make poor status symbols because beneath the skin, the message is work. For the Denali, Escalade, Land Cruiser etc, the status is more obvious...big family, bigger money, club membership etc. So while the Lexus might be the premier luxury automobile, it might be that the premier truck carries a snowplow, air compressor, or safety strobes.

So who is it you want to impress?
