I guess it is a personal taste. Out of that list, I definitely would go with the RX330, followed by the BMW, with a distant third being (I can't believe I'm saying this) the Pontiac Torrent.
The Buick looks like it has the same radio found in my grandmother's 20-year-old Oldsmobile. I don't really care for the mass of aluminum in the Ford and the "old-school" radio and climate control displays. The center console just doesn't look integrated with the rest of the car. It's like they picked out the shape and cut a large rectangle to install their "truck based" radio head units.
I currently drive a VW and for a car that is relatively inexpensive, the interior is done fairly well (soft plastics with texture with a center console that looks like it was designed for the car).
I'll have to wait until I see it in person. It's not a deal killer for me, but something to consider. The Murano is high on my list, but I don't like instrument display (maybe I'm too picky).
Many more surfaces of the Edge's interior will be softer since more money was placed into it. And unlike Toyota, it'll actually have decent carpeting, and a real headliner (not molded felt).
I look forward to seeing it in person then. I doubt they will have it open at the Chicago Auto Show, though.
I think they should have put more money in the stereo design instead of the headliner. It looks like they use the same stereo on practically every car too. It looks like it can display a limited number of characters compared to most modern day stereos. I'm curious to see how the MP3 player/audio input jack interfaces with the radio. I'm guessing you either need to get the navigation system for the display of song titles and other info, or operate your MP3 player "blind".

Hyundai Santa Fe Radio
I used to own a '94 Mustang, and I replaced the stereo with a 3rd party unit within a month of purchasing the car (I didn't need to do the same with the VW).
The same display you see above also plays MP3 CDs so the text function is already there. Haven't used it myself, and I agree the radio is very utilitarian but it's functional and it keeps the cost way down.

So how is the interior of the Fusion (quality, feel, solidness, etc)
So far I've been impressed. Mine has the piano black trim. The materials and controls are solid - no squeaks or rattles or ergonomic problems. I'd classify it as simple and elegant but very functional and comfortable. Best interior I've ever seen in a Ford.
I presume that Ford and DC don't offer XM radio because they don't want to help out GM. How difficult could it be to provide both XM AND Sirius capability? The present situation is like making you decide between AM and FM radio when you buy a car.
How difficult could it be to provide both XM AND Sirius capability?
Shouldn't be THAT difficult to provide head units that are both XM And Sirius CAPABLE/READY. Then you just have to later buy the actual Sirius/XM RECEIVER to hook up to the head unit.
Heck, you could even provide two Aux-INs on the radio, so a person could buy BOTH receivers if he wanted to do so. That way, he could listen to both Stern AND Oprah. :surprise:
Folks, a number of way off-topic messages have been removed. This discussion is about the new Edge, and not about satellite radio (in general) or freedom of speech issues.
If you want to focus on XM and/or Sirius, we've got a topic dedicated to those two offerings: XM & Sirius Satellite Radio
Thanks!

I want the MKX, I hope that it comes out early as ANT posted earlier. All the reports so far indicate a Fall arrival. I like the SAGE COLOR on the ZEPHYR would like to see it on the MKX as well. The cream color is also nice on the EDGE. I've been waiting for the 3.5 V6 and AWD; that is why I didn't get the Montego, when it came out. I didn't get the Zephyr because of no AWD; now the EDGE, MKX, MKZ will have what I want. Just the wait now.
I went to the Chicago Auto Show today. The Edge looks even better in person than it did in the pictures. The black MKX on display was sharp.
Unfortunately, they didn't have a model on the floor to get an up close look. I did however sit in just about every SUV/CUV/wagon at the show, and I am sorry to say that I found the Ford/Mercury interiors among the worse. Too much hard and cheap plastic, especially around the interior door handles and console. The only Ford interior I found attractive was the Fusion and that was with the piano black accents, which seem to work well.
I even found the Envoy Denali and Jeep Grand Cherokee interiors to be better (although the Chrysler Pacifica interior was awful). The Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano interiors were slightly better in terms of looks, but I definitely had the impression that those vehicles utilized higher quality interior materials (the forest of wood in the Highlander Limited and the gauge cluster on the Murano I found particularly offensive, though).
Anyway, styling is definitely something of a personal preference, but I think if Ford has aspirations of the Edge going into the low- to mid-$30s, they will need to do better with the interior. They should borrow some cues from their Volvo division which had nice tasteful and understated (unlike the Lincoln) interiors.

If it's in the low to mid 30s, count me out. I want to see the base at 25K and loaded models under 30k. Ford has a winner here. I hope they don't screw it up with pricing.
It depends on what you mean by "loaded", but an Edge with all of the options (leather seats, navigation, sunroof, etc.) will likely have an MSRP well over $30k. The non-hybrid, loaded Escape has an MSRP of $29.7k which is probably why Ford has $1,500 in rebates right now on it.
That is not the official pricing. I have seen base prices start at $25k as you mention and I have also seen base prices start at $28k on that site. Ford is using it to try and get a "feel" for where to price it.
Here is the small print on the site: *Prices are for survey purposes only and are not official pricing. Prices may vary from visit to visit and will change before the Edge is launched this fall.
Even at $25k the prices climb into the $30s easily.
The base price was 27,220 when I visited the site. If that's well equipped with cruise and remote entry, it might be tolerable. But I'm still hoping for a 24,995 base.
Go visit www.mazdausa.com and build a CX-7. The Edge pricing will ultimately be competitive.
I really really hope that Ford puts a realistic price that is not expected to have rebates thrown at it.
Now a days rebates really suck. People will do head to head comparaisons on websites like Edmunds which will list MSRP and Invoice but not always rebate. Look at the Cobalt vs. the Focus.
The Cobalt looks cheaper until you throw in the $3k rebate currently available on the Focus. But think of all the people who just disconsider the Focus right off the bat because of the misperception that the Focus is more Expensive.
It seems to me that the people in the car market right now based on who is coming into my showroom are replacing worn out vehicles that are old and paid off. So the rebate really isn't as necessary to soak up negative equity.
"That way, he could listen to both Stern AND Oprah." I can't see a reason I would pay for either. The previous selling points to get sat radio didn't win me over either. what were they?
2024 Ford F-150 STX, 2023 Ford Explorer ST, 91 Mustang GT vert
I wasn't particularly sold on this feature until one of my service loaners had it. It had XM Radio and I was glad to be able to skip the commercials.
I became convinced when I had a rental car that had it. I didn't even know it had it. Found out by mistake when I was switching "bands" and it went from FM to AM to XM.
You can now price and build an MZX at Lincoln.com!!!!!! Entry price is 33K which is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT pricing, though it is subject to change but probably won't. GO LINCOLN GO!!!
This means that logically the Ford Edge pricing has to be closer to $24K entry than $27K. At $27K, you add like three packages and features and you are at the Lincoln price that comes well equiped.
I went to the local dealer today to see if they had any new info on the new Edge.....pricing/release date. He had no new information but said that ford is watching what other suvs in the same class are doing with their pricing and rebates to help determine their pricing. They are also waiting to see how sales of suvs go to determine build numbers and the prices. Coming to the market late with this product is already putting them behind in the race, so they need to be careful with build numbers and prices. He also said that they are trying to price and set build number goals to help eliminate the rebates that have become necessary to meet sales projections. If this is all true, and not "bull puckey", it could bode well for the prices of the up coming cars.
Has anyone heard anything about the Edge's off road capabilities? I'm not looking to explore lost continents here, I just want go up and down some dirty hills. I know some crossovers have focused too much on being car like. Like for the FX series, Infiniti says it is not an offroad vehicle.
Whatever crossover the Edge replaced, it did a good job. The style is owesome and sporty. I like the height of the body and the roomy interior. I also like the bold fusion grille. The Edge really wins.
That's ineresting that you heard that because I heard the exact same thing. I was talking to a friend of mine who is working at the plant in Ontario where they're building the Edge, telling him that my wife wanted to get a Murano. He was saying that the Edge was beating the Murano in every test.
Of course we still got the Murano because my wife wouldn't wait.
Wow. Ford is pulling a 180 with the Edge. Very attractive looking car and this new engine will really put them back in the horsepower war. I can see them selling a lot of units despite being late into this CUV market. Pretty decent info here. I read that the gas mileage is around 25highway/19city. That wouldn't be soo bad.

Could you imagine owning a Ford, mastering the radio then buying a second ford that had a different radio for you to learn how to use? ARUGH!
Now Ford should definately get its butt in gear as far as providing Sirius and MP3/Aux Jacks. Its inexcusable not to offer Sirius in ALL MODELS!
Mark.
Actually, I'd prefer they offer XM.
First, XM has commercials,
Second, Sirius is a higher quality digital signal, the same as comparing an FM radio to a CD.

It was a great time to introduce the 3.5 V6 (should be in the 500) and a great time for the 6sp auto.
The Edge is an "image" vehicle. It says "I'm above an Escape. I'm like the Murano and RX330 and my cousin is a Lincoln."
The Freeestyle is the practical one for families and those who need cargo space. The Edge is all about image.

An MKX should start there and go up to 36-37k.
This has the potential to be a winner, don't price it out of the market.

I like being able to listen to MUSIC all the time, without the commercials.
Needless to say, I'm still not totally sold on it, but at least now I'll consider adding satellite radio to my next car.
I became convinced when I had a rental car that had it. I didn't even know it had it. Found out by mistake when I was switching "bands" and it went from FM to AM to XM.
Strange how the next time I had a loaner car, it didn't have XM Radio. (I had a 2005 model without XM vs. a 2004 model with XM)

I've also heard that the Edge is besting the Murano quite easily at Ford's test facility.
This is good news and exactly what Ford needs right now.
Of course we still got the Murano because my wife wouldn't wait.
