    Another great (not) idea.

Nissan Versa, $12,999 to start. Painted door handles and painted bumpers.

i think the shape of the door handles along with color of the vehicle make a difference. i have a focus that is light green with black door handles. to me they look pretty good. they do feel cheap though. my brother in law has a white explorer with black handles. the lower cladding is dark so i think thats looks pretty good too.
if you have a brown vehicle with black door handles, then that doesn't look so good. imo.

I also would like to agree that the Freestyle SE was a very good deal for the money. You got 6-7 seats for around $23,000.
  • vwgolfiiivwgolfiii Member Posts: 11
The interior is so darn plain in the Freestyle and Fusion. From what I can tell from the pictures, I think they got a clue with the Edge and jazzed up the interior a little bit.
  • mschmalmschmal Member Posts: 1,757
Please give us an example of a car interior that you like.

  • vwgolfiiivwgolfiii Member Posts: 11
That's easy. Look at any VW/Audi or Volvo interior. VW's don't use the most expensive materials, but their interiors are pleasant and never look cheesy. In some areas, the domestics use very cheap plastics that are either too shiny or grainy and the polyester interior cloth tends to look very cheap. Of late, they have been improving though. The European Fords and GM cars have nicer interiors because of the competition.

Until I saw your posting and rechecked the top tier lists I didn't know that Mobil/Exxon didn't meet top tier. Neither does BP (think I knew that--think it's because of their marketing of Amoco Premium as "better".)

In the St. Louis area where I live, that leaves:
    1. Quik Trip (which dominates the market bordering on price-fixing)
    2. Conoco/Phillips
    3. Shell

    Thought the list was longer.
  • mschmalmschmal Member Posts: 1,757
Hey there may be some kind of financial contribution from the oil companies before the can be branded as "toptier". There may be other companies out there that meet the requirement but haven't bucked up for he certification.

What is clear though is that you do not want to use Generic.

Hey the Zephry won an industry wide award for best interior this year.

Definately give these cars a second chance.
Touch surfaces in the Fusion are almost all soft except for the panel housing the radio and the climate controls.

Seats in fusion are way better than taurus. I think the automatic shifter could be a little more upscale and they should put Leather Steering Wheels on the SE.

Want to see a boring interior, look at a GM product or even more icky, a Hyundai.

Seems like I have seen many articles written by people who used to work in the refinery industry saying that generic gas is the same as branded gas just in different trucks. I have a '99 RX300, an '06 Sienna and before those a 92 Volvo and '95 Aerostar all bought new. 99.9% of the gas used over all those years has been 87 octane generic and have never had any problems with the fuel systems, power, or engine in any of them.
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
Not sure what generic gas is. QuikTrip was the first certified brand and yet owns no refineries (but does control the quality of its company owned stores). Citgo (pulling out of the U.S. market) has all sorts of poorly controlled mom and pop stations, none of which are owned corporately (the government of Venezuela). So, in that case, what's generic.

In the St. Louis market all gas comes from (at most) two refineries. Additives are added at the truck. The gas is the same among many brands.
  • avery1avery1 Member Posts: 373
To me generic gas is the gas sold at the local independent station that is generally $.10 to $.25/gallon cheaper than Shell, Chevron, Union 76, etc.
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
The differences are the amount of detergents that are added (and that's what the Top Tier designation is supposed to be guaranteeing), contaminants and accuracy of the octane rating. Cheap gas may be contaminated, not have enough detergent or have a lower than published octane rating.

Top Tier is obviously a marketing thing, as is Ford's recommendation of BP.

This is a Ford Edge forum. Why are people talking about gas? Mods, I think any more talk about gas should be done in another forum.

Can we get back to the Edge please?

We've veered a little off... so yeah, let's try to stick to Edge conversation. Thanks!

When does Ford plan on kicking this thing off :confuse: I thought they were supposed to have their pricing out by July 10th?
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
Since I have been unable to find the order guides anywhere, despite the supposed July 10 open date for the order bank, I called a dealer yesterday. The man I spoke with informed me that the owner had just returned from Dearborn to see the Edge and other upcoming vehicles, and that they expected to have the order guides and to be able to place orders in August. Does anyone (ANT 14 or ?) know the cause of the delay? Is there a problem with the new 3.5 V6, 6-speed transmission, or something else?

My wife and I like the interior and exterior of the Edge far more than that of the Lincoln MKX. :) The Ford web site keeps teasing us with a possible option for cooled and heated seats on the Edge. If they only offer them on the MKX, I would still buy the Edge and then get the MKX seats or seat parts from a junkyard or the parts department.
  • mschmalmschmal Member Posts: 1,757
I don't know what the guy at your dealer was thinking but the order guides are out.

As thy are not public knowlege, I really can't post a link. If anyone had any specific questions I would be happy to answer.

In brief, there are 3 trim levels. SE, SEL and SEL Plus.

THere are also lots of stand alone options. This is going to be another complicated vehicle. Right after Mark Fields said we are going to have less trim levels and less confusiong product mixes.

The base SE will have something of the rental car feel with its unpainted door handles.

SEL will have upgraded cloth. and you can get optional leather. Standard 6 CD

SEL plus will have standard leather and power passenger seat with a fold down back and quick release folding 2nd row.

I really don't understand the point of the SE though.

Why would someone not want the following.

    Exterior
    • Body color painted door handles, skull caps and
    rear spoiler
    • Dual chrome rolled exhaust tips
    • Fog lamps w/chrome bezel
    • SEL badge
    Interior
    • Audio – In dash CDX6/MP3, 4 speakers & steering
    wheel audio controls
    • Leather steering wheel and shifter covers
    • Message Center/compass
    • Overhead console w/sunglass holder
    • Sunvisors, w/Dual illuminated visor mirrors
    • Unique chrome interior treatments
    • Unique aluminum instrument panel finish
    • Upgraded cloth interior – w/manual driver lumbar &
    6-way power driver seat
    • Convenience Group
    – Automatic headlamps w/wiper activation
    – Electrochromic autodimming rearview mirror
    – Illuminated door entry keypad

There is definately a total moron at work in the packaging department of Ford. For example we just took delivery on my lot of a couple of 07 4 Door Focus in S trim. This is the total base trim. No powers, no cruise control, no tilt wheel. MSRP $16,000

Right next to the S we had an SE with convenience. SE has power windows mirrors doorlocks, keyless entry and center armrest. Convenience pkg adds cruise and Tilt/telescoping wheel. MSRP $16,600!!!!!!!!!!! Now who wouldn't take an SE over an S for 600? The real kicker is that my dealer didn't even order the S cars. Ford just sent them, something they often do.

Could you tell us what the final pricing of the trim levels are? What are the final EPA gas mileage estimates for the AWD and the FWD?

As far as packages, can you specifically order one with the vista roof and (NON) powered seats?

    Thanks.

In another move to curb incentive spending, Ford Motor Co. will launch the 2007 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX without cash rebates, its U.S. sales chief says.

mschmal - Thank you! What is standard on the SEL and SEL Plus, and what is optional? Are the cooled seats available? I will try to go to a dealer or dealers today to see what I can get. If possible, I'll give them a deposit (refundable) and order one.
  • jester8jester8 Member Posts: 5
Sorry tinycadon, prices and EPA ratings have not yet been released.

The Panoramic Vista Roof can only be ordered on the SEL/SEL Plus (not available on SE).
  • tinycadontinycadon Member Posts: 287
So it's safe to say that the SEL will only come with the power drivers seat? If you ordered one direct, could you delete the power drivers seat? I ask because with my height the vista roof will be right on top of me, I'm hoping with a manual seat it would sit a little lower/closer to the floor and give me that extra space I would need. Wouldn't want this vehicle unless I could get the vista roof, it's the #1 selling point for me.
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
I doubt that a manual seat would go lower than a power seat.
  • jester8jester8 Member Posts: 5
Correct, the SEL/SEL Plus has a 6-way power driver's seat as standard equipment. There is no way to delete this.

Not being an engineer, I can't state whether the power seat could be adjusted to be lower to the floor than the manual seat in the SE. I would expect this to be the case, however, as the manual seat position is fixed at a height to accommodate most drivers.

I called two dealers, and both confirmed that they have the order guides. I placed my order with the fleet salesman at the one closest to my home, a dealer we liked for service on our Thunderbird and Mountaineer. :) It is their first Edge order. I have a copy of the order guide.

I ordered an SEL Plus in Creme Brulee with the camel interior, AWD, and reverse sensors. The SEL Plus really only has four categories of options - AWD, a trailer hitch, navigation & sound systems, and 18" wheels (painted or chrome clad). As Ford has announced, the safety canopy side/curtain air bags are standard on all versions of the Edge.

Cooled seats are not mentioned in the order guide, and it does not say if the leather is perforated or not.

I no longer care about Navigation or Bluetooth from Ford, as I plan to replace the factory radio with a Pioneer AVIC-Z1, a navigation radio with XM-NavTraffic (wonderful for people such as myself who drive 35,000 miles per year in places such as southern CA with heavy and unpredictable traffic), XM radio, Bluetooth, and a hard disk to store music (about $1,460 street price for the head unit, plus I will need to add an amplifier(s) and speakers).

The SEL Plus is just an SEL with the 65L Premium Package (dual electronic climate control, exterior puddle lamps, heated seats and mirrors, leather seats, memory seats and mirrors, particulate air filter, and steering wheel climate controls) and the 47F Seating Flexibility Package (6-way power passenegr seat, fold flat front passenegr seat, leather seats, and EasyFold (TM) remote 2nd row seat release) included.

My guess is that the EPA mileage ratings will be 18 / 25 (regular). What do all of you think?
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
I think the key here is the base price on the Edge SE. Like the Freestyle SE, if the price is right, the base model could be a very good deal.

What is in the convienience group anyways?
  • jester8jester8 Member Posts: 5
jchan2, the Convenience Group (std on SEL/SEL Plus, opt. on SE) consists of:
    - Automatic headlamps
    - Autodimming inside rearview mirror
    - Illuminated door entry keypad

    For your reading pleasure.

    2007 Ford Edge order guide.
  • beerme1beerme1 Member Posts: 67
    Thanks for posting that Baggs.

In going over that it seems to me for some reason Ford has decided to not include the temperature on the mirror. I don't understand why they keep neglecting that item.
My 05 Mariner does not have it either.

Does anyone know what tires will be used? Again with my Mariner, if they use the absolute garbage Continental tires I will not buy this vehicle unless my dealer puts something else on. I haven't been able to get any info about that yet and am surprised it's not mentioned on the order guide.
  • jester8jester8 Member Posts: 5
Order guides never specify tire brands, only size, style (all-season, all-terrain, etc), load range (some vehicles), and sidewall trim (BSW, OWL, etc). On any vehicle of any brand, tire brand can and does vary for each of these criteria.

Rather than mirror-mounted, Ford has used outside temp readouts for years in either the EATC display or the Message Center display. In this case, I would bet that an outside temp readout is part of the Message Center functionality.

    Hope this helps.
  • beerme1beerme1 Member Posts: 67
I would be fine with having it in the message center as opposed to the mirror, but they didn't do it that way on the Mariner.
I think to humor myslef I will see if Conti offers those tire sizes in the same model that comes on the Escape/Mariner :-)
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
Since it's based on the Fusion platform it's probably on the EATC display.
  • beerme1beerme1 Member Posts: 67
Can I show my ignorance and ask what is the EATC and why didn't the Mariner have that?
    Thanks!
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
    Electronic Automatic Temperature Control.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
    Thanks for letting me know.
  • jester8jester8 Member Posts: 5
I think you're right. The Edge EATC controls include a button marked "EXT" which I guess means "external temperature".
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
Exactly - that's it. Same as the Fusion.

And after it's been sitting in the hot sun it will read 131 degrees until you start moving and it cools off/recalibrates.
  • beerme1beerme1 Member Posts: 67
Thanks so much for clearing that up for me :shades:
  • mschmalmschmal Member Posts: 1,757
Ford is using Pirellis alot as tires for upgraded wheels. Even on the Harley F-150. I didn't even know Pirelli made AT tires until I saw this truck.

The Escape/Mariner uses 16 inch tires. These were Continentals.

On the Explorer with 17 and 18 inch tires, Ford is Using Michilens and BF Goodrich.

The Edge will have 17 or 18 inch tires...hopefully they will be Michilens and BF Goodrich.
  • beerme1beerme1 Member Posts: 67
Ha! I just looked it up at Tirerack and didn't see any Conti's in either the 17" or 18" size. Good thing. I'm sure either Michellin or BF will be a far better product.
  • beerme1beerme1 Member Posts: 67
In looking at the order form, thanks again baggs, I read that daytime running lights will only be available on fleet models. How does that make any sense?
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
Ford doesn't offer DRLs as a factory option on any vehicles except fleet orders AFAIK. I think you can add DRLs as a dealer installed accessory or DIY. I guess some fleet buyers want them as a factory option.
  • lateralglateralg Member Posts: 929
    How about Canadian vehicles?
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
Good point. I assumed everyone knew that Canadian vehicles were required to have DRLs, which is probably the only reason Ford even offers them as an option in the U.S.
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
    17" - Hankook
    18" - Continental

Same tires for Edge and MKX. They tried using a Michelin tire on the MKX but it "mostly sucks and costs too much" (direct quote). Sounds like there may be a future (2008+) option for 20" Pirellis though.

I thought I read somewhere that DRLs are activated simply by installing a fuse in the correct slot in the fuse panel. Anyone know if that's the case? I don't like DRLs personally but my curiosity has been sparked. :D
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
In the past you had to buy a plug-in module IIRC, at least for some cars. Not sure about now.
  • jbalsimojbalsimo Member Posts: 3
I ordered a Black SEL last night. I got it with AWD, a Vista Rook, and black interior. Our Ford dealership said they could order two for there store and said I could order the one. I'm using X plan, so prices not being out were no big deal. A friend who works for Frod said the first one came of the line two days ago. He said they usually take a few weeks to look and then they start kicking them out.
  • tinycadontinycadon Member Posts: 287
I thought the Job1 date wasn't until October, with arrival in November? Are you saying these vehicles will be hitting the dealer lots earlier?
