I believe the latest delivery date will be October 16th. The dealer said the earliest we would get ours is 6-weeks. I don't think he is right abou that. I think it is more like 10-12 weeks. A friend that works for Ford said that they will try to fix any problems, from the one they did the other day and then start kicking them out. He said Ford would want them out as early as possible to get sales going.
I purchased & installed a module for my '01 Mustang. In addition to DRL, it also provides autolamp (Auto on & off of all exterior lights). As I recall, it cost about $80. I got it from a Ford dealer.
So does it give you DRL headlights or just the parking lights? I've noticed lately that a lot of manufacturers are switching from the former to the latter. I'd take the latter if given a choice.
I ordered an AWD SEL Plus yesterday at a local dealer through Sam's Club Auto Purchasing. There is still no firm pricing but the Ford deal with Sam's is Invoice. I chose Redfire Metallic with Camel Interior, Vista Roof, Audiophile system, Rear Sensors & 18 Chrome clad wheels. I may still add the towing prep package.
The dealer said that they had two Edge's on order for the dealership. I was the first customer to place an order. The Fleet Manager said that there was a chance that my car could get here sometime in October, but that it should get here by November. My lease on my 2004 Mountaineer is up then so I definitely need my Edge prior to turning the lease in.
If the tow package includes an aux. transmission fluid cooler, which i am 98% sure it does, go for it. You will get this added benefit for better transmission reliability even if you never tow.
Also if you ride bikes, there are some neat bike racks you can get that fit into the hitch... much better than trying to hoist a bike up onto the roof of this thing.
Thanks for the mschmal! I added the package to my order this morning.
I do ride bikes and just saw one of the Yakima racks on the back of CX-7 yesterday. The local Mazda dealer is including one with each purchase. I am only 5'2" and it would be tough to hoist a bike on the roof.
I took a look at the sticker on a loaded CX-7. It topped out around $33K. From the "pricing" on the Build an Edge site, I think a comparably equipped Edge is going to come in a little higher.
Looks nice, why are the comparison to the Murano? Looks like the Toyota RAV 4 has the big edge on this new commer. Less: engine, room, performance, quality More: cost and possibly another headache.
edinstk: Do you work for Toyota? If not, you might do more research before claiming that the Edge will have less quality than the RAV4. I considered the RAV4, despite my very bad experience with a mis-designed Sienna, but rejected it after seeing that it has the same defect as the Sienna - a steering column slanted to one side. There seem to be too many reports of RAV4 defects. There are also reports that a replacement windshield, a rather common part for any vehicle, takes months to arrive all of the way from Japan!
like those people in the MATRIX, he's sucked in, but not to a computer, but the web of "Japanese superriority". Remember, it was not the RAV4's fault, the puddle should not have been there
This reminds of the "Lurkers" on another board that just show up to incite contention.
RAV4 better? I personally think not! I was interested in a RAV4 as well. However after reading numerous reports of about transmission problems, etc., I decided to buy my third Ford Motor Company product in a row. (2000 Mountaineer Luxury, 2004 Mountaineer Premier, 2007 Edge SEL Plus)
The Rav4 Limited also comes up short in comparison with Edge SEL Plus when it comes to equipment & conveniences.
I ordered mine last Wednesday. They didn't have prices, but I was using an X plan. I don't think they would have ordered it for me if I wasn't, because of not knowing the prices.
I couldn't buy a car without driving it first. I need to do more than kick the tires. I'm just puzzled by anyone buying a pig in a poke. Good Luck! Signed: Long time Ford buyer.
Rest assured that I, and I suspect all others placing early orders, are not making any kind of mistake. If we decide to cancel the order before the vehicle comes in, or if we don't like the vehicle after it comes in, we do not have to buy it, and the dealer has to return any deposit (typically they want $500) they received. There really is no risk.
Ditto! I do not believe that I am making a mistake either. I haven't agreed to buy anything yet and I didn't have to sign any contract to order my SEL Plus. I put down a fully refundable $500 deposit on my credit card and after a week they haven't even charged my credit card yet.
I believe that it's a no-lose situation. I get to order the car I want with what I want, so that means I will not have to "make do" with what the dealer gets. I always have option to not buy the car even after it arrives at the dealership. I can kick the tires, take it for a test drive, and inspect it all I want. If I don't like it, I don't have to buy it. It's that simple!
I remarked to the fleet consultant, "What if the car gets here and I hate it?" His answer..."There isn't anyway that you could possibly hate this car!!!"
Call me naive or a sucker if you want, but I don't think I'm going be disappointed! :shades:
Here's a link to a video of the Edge cruising around. I wonder how many whiplashes were induced by this little trip? I know it would have gotten my attention.
Would someone who has ordered an Edge without much more than a brochure to help them, please explain what convinced them that this was appropriate and reasoned? I think it's a nice-looking vehicle, but the pictures haven't cost me anything more than a little of my time. Thanks for any replies.
I "think" this may be the right vehicle for me (styling, function, etc.) By ordering now, I will get the exact vehicle/options I want as soon as possible. When it comes in, I will get to look it over, drive it and then decide if I really do like it. If not, the dealer puts it on their lot and I walk away. Nothing to lose.
Actually the suspension engineers say the Edge is beating the pants off the Murano at the test track. One thing Ford has been excelling at recently is handling. I guess those formula 1 engineers are starting to pay off.
Ford Focus has nothing to do with Mazda. Rather Mazda is gaining from partnership with Ford. BTW Ford Mondeo/Contour existed long before Mazda6. Its called German engineering.
You might want to read up on where the Euro version of the Ford Focus came from and which of the three parties involved did the drivetrain and handling package. Hint: think Mazda3 and Volvo S40. If you're talking about the U.S. version of the Focus then you have a point. Just know that the Euro version along with the Mazda3 run circles around the old gen we have over here.
The Ford Edge started life as a Mazda6, which BTW Ford had very little to do with aside from the engine block, and has a lot to do with Mazda while having absolutely nothing to do with the Mondeo or Contour. Why would you bring those up anyway? They were nice back then but a joke now.
The Edge is actually a Fusion wagon you might say, but guess what a Fusion is a stretched version of and who developed it's suspension.
Ford has something better than German engineering right now and it's called Mazda.
Rather Mazda is gaining from partnership with Ford.
You might want to read up on that too. The Euro Focus and Mazda6 platforms (which as you'll recall from above were developed mostly by Mazda), along with the Volvo S80 platform, are going to be the basis of just about all Ford car based vehicles for the forseeable future so you might as well get used to it.
Mazda didn't have anything to do with the Lincoln LS - one of the best handling sedans ever made. It was tuned on the Nurburgring long before the CTS ever showed up.
Even though the Fusion started life as a Mazda6 the suspension was engineered by Ford.
Ford has directly credited it's work with Jackie Stewart's formula 1 team for helping it understand suspension engineering. It has nothing to do with Mazda.
We had more than the order guide. We had seen the Edge at the LA Auto Show in January and liked it.
We know that the Mazda 6 and the Fusion, Milan, and Zephyr/MKZ derived from it handle well, so expect the Edge to handle well.
The center stack with the side vents is much nicer than other designs, such as that on the Explorer.
We like the plentiful and nicely designed interior storage: door pockets and bottle holders, large console big enough for a lap top and with a ld which flips back, not to one side, two cup holders in the console, a place for ink pens and other things in front of the shifter and cup holders, plus another rubber tray on top of the center stack.
The new V6 and new 6-speed automatic are very promising, and the AWD and stability control will be good safety features. AWD is a real feature, as it will in help in the rain, on sandy or other slippery surfaces, and on those occasions when we need to go up a hilly dirt road.
The rear storage will meet my needs for a work vehicle, and is large enough so that I will not have to lean down part of the second row.
By ordering early, we can get one early. If we do not like it, the dealer will simply put it in his inventory and sell it to someone else.

Do you have a link?
Mazda didn't have anything to do with the Lincoln LS - one of the best handling sedans ever made.
The Edge will handle much better than the Murano, the nose will feel much more planted...as if it's digging down on the pavement when transitioning. The new 6 Speed tranny kicks off the first 2 gears quickly, and the vehicle will feel as if it's tripping over itself.
Sidenote: LS suspension was a collaboration between Jaguar, and Ford EU. Then again, it's more Jag, than Ford in essense in case that might come up.
The suspension for the Mazda6 (of which I own one and did tons of researchh before buying) was inspired by the BMW 3 Series. Mazda benchmarked the 3 Series and developed their own suspension system for it that was reused in the Fusion. I can find the link to the Mazda article as it is in the history section of a Mazda6 club that I am a part of, if that is needed. But I think it is suffice to say that Mazda is where the credit lies for the Mazda6 and Fusion handling. I don't know about Fords other cars so I can't comment but I know for a fact about this here Mazda in my driveway.

Thanks for that tidbit ANT. I wasn't 100% sure of that at the time but I seemed to recall something like that regarding the LS. The LS was a nice car and I for one am sad to see it go.
I think some of us are getting suspension and platform design/sharing confused with suspension tuning. There is no doubt that Ford's current and upcoming model lineup have been heavily influenced by Mazda but that doesn't mean the suspensions weren't given their final tuning by Ford. And this new Edge is a Mazda through and through with the final touches having been done by Ford.
I've been a Ford guy all my life and I see this new Mazda way of thinking as a good thing IMO. When I compare my Mazda6 or a new Fusion/Milan to my dad's '96 Sable it's like night and day.
Thank you for replying with your reasoning; I hope the deal works out for you and certainly for Ford, since their future depends on new models such as this one. It won't be long before more detailed reviews are available and I'm certainly going to take a look at the Edge; currently I have a 2004 Forester XT, which is the best all-season car I've ever owned.
On Ford's Fleet web site under the major optional features, the sixth one down if you're counting :shades: it lists perforated leather. All the pictures I have seen so far have been solid leather. I would prefer perforated and yet, the order guide that was previously linked to here a page or two ago made no mention of perforated leather. So I have another question :confuse: Similar to my daytime running lights question, is this also going to be an option only available to fleet orders?
question-Four Words: Wheres the third row?! Everyone knows Freestyle is a flop and will need to be replaced in a year or two. Answers I've heared: Fairlane. Sounds nice but should be pretty big. Also I heared they might stuff a third row into the edge. I wonder if there's a way they can do this w/o stuffing? Rendezvous: inch longer--nice 3rd row
This car is good on paper but the reality is far different.
I remember when the Freestyle first came out, there was a review about how Ford drove the journalists to a rock quarry to demonstrate the Haldex 4 wheel drive.
They drove Freestyle and its competitors half-way up a gravel mountain and stopped. Then continued to the top.
The Freestyle acted as if it was on pavement. The Chrysler Pacifica rolled backwards 10 feet before the AWD system engaged.
The Buick rolled all the way down to the bottom of the hill because of its un-electronic 4 wheel drive unit.
ALSO those 3rd row seats are basically for show. No adult wants to be there and when you are using the seats, there is no cargo room, so whats the point?
The source book for the Edge states Leather Seating only and there is no mention of perforated seating.
The is what they give sales people as a guide for selling the vehicle. If there was perferated seating it would be mentioned. IT was mentioned for the Freestyle which does have perforated leather.
Most likely that was a photo from the MKX which will have the Ford-Lincoln-Mercury exclusive climate controlled seats.
Did you open the link? That was a Ford Fleet listing for the Edge. There is a seperate one for the MKX. I did not see a photo of a seat with perforated leather. Rather as I sated I saw it listed as a major option on the Ford Fleet site which is the link I provided.
Q and A by albook Aug 09, 2006 (8:39 pm) question-Four Words: Wheres the third row?! Everyone knows Freestyle is a flop and will need to be replaced in a year or two. Answers I've heared: Fairlane. The Fairlane concept shown at the auto show was based on Edge (CD3) platform. It was deemed too small to be a "people mover", so the production version (just officially approved several days ago) will be on 500/Freestyle platform(D3). So, yes, Edge can have a 3rd row seat, a nice one at that, in crossover term. Will it see production? Who knows. IMHO Freestyle, people mover and 3-row Edge cannot co-exist. One must go (or not born). Could Freestyle be gone? Yes, could be, but not very soon. Ford already has a MY 08 major refreshing coming out next spring, so it's unlikely to be dropped before 2010.
Albook - did you forget the revised Freestyle, Five Hundred, and Montego styling and the same new engine engine and transmission which is in the Edge and MKX? The Edge and MKX will be at dealerships in November of 2006, while the revised 2008 model year Freestyle, Five Hundred, and Montego will be at dealerships in early 2007. Ford will then offer the following crossover vehicles:
Escape/Mariner/Tribute - two rows CX-7 - two rows Edge / MKX - two rows Freestyle - three rows CX-9 - three rows
The Fairlane will have much more room. It's a lower floor, a higher ceiling creation. The Lincoln version will be a bit different, as in swoopier in profile (more MB R-Class)
