Camry doesn't, nor does Malibu or Fusion.

It's a factory option on the Malibu...last time I looked it was $100. It may be more. I wouldn't buy one without it.

A lot of folks here need to be reminded that the sky's not falling, but I'm not one of them.

Same for Toyota, and yes that's OEM part # PT29A-33085-01.

    Par for the course.

factory option means it's part of your car when built.
dealer installed is different. you pay for the part plus installation.

I saw a 699 pinstripe charge on a Kia Optima last week. Funny as hail.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Do you know for a fact it's not a factory option from Toyota?

I'm tired of being the fact checker, to be frank. Most of the time I research, what's said here is wrong.

This type of molding is typically installed with two sided tape. Piece of cake, who needs to pay for dealer labor when a trained monkey could do it?

And yes, I've installed molding before. Easiest job I've ever done on a car.

    ateixeira,

For sure it's not on the 'Build Your Toyota' site at toyota.com, at least for the Avalon. Couldn't say about the other models, tho....

And, as to the bad info provided by some, my only .02 is I've stopped speaking with the Service Mgr at my dealership about things, then posting his comments, as HE was usually always wrong (got burned bad when he told me how the remote start on the Avalon worked, then posted his info as a reply to a forum inquiry...he was waaaaaay off base. Certainly won't do that again. I'm with you on trying to do your own research for certain 'hard fact' items...usually easy just to to find it yourself.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Agreed - a simple Google search usually is enough.

For the RAV4 it is indeed a factory option, order code "BM" for the bodyside molding.

Ford got jealous of all the attention and announced a much bigger one:

    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/23/ford-recalling-150-000-f-150-models-for-fault- - y-airbag-deployment/

NHTSA has received notice of 238 instances of inadvertent deployment resulting in 77 injuries

    Oops.

Remember the half million Windstars from earlier this year, too:

    And new Explorer seatbelts:

    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/07/2011-ford-explorer-faces-recall-for-seat-recl- - ine-mechanism/

And you may not be able to escape those miscreant air bags if the door handles don't work:

    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/03/2009-2010-ford-f-150-being-recalled-to-fix-do- - or-handles/

I am disappointed. Toyota has been slacking!

COME ON TOYOTA, YOU CAN DO BETTER! LOL

You provided the Toyota Accessory link.
I just think there is a difference between being able to include a feature from the factory and having have it ordered/installed at the dealership level as an additional cost.
Given the choice, most people are going to have the dealer install the molding.

Depends on the dealership specifically. I have had Toyota, Nissan, GM, and others quote me outrageously ridiculous prices to add factory accessories by them at the dealership to the point I had to go somewhere else who got the car in from the factory with the accessory I wanted. I'm talking several hundred dollars, sometimes even more than what the factory price for it was.

"Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 2.17 million vehicles in the United States to address accelerator pedals that could become entrapped in floor mats or jammed in carpeting."

I assume this is the same story:

Toyota recalls 2.2 million vehicles over pedal issues
    REUTERS — 22 MINUTES AGO

DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp issued three recalls affecting nearly 2.2 million vehicles on Thursday, citing accelerator pedal issues.

In the biggest of the three, Toyota said it would recall nearly 1.4 million vehicles because of the potential that the floormat could get lodged under the accelerator pedal and trap it.

This would widen its late 2009 recall of its Camry and other models to address the floormat risk.

Three models are affected by this recall, including 761,000 RAV4 crossovers for the model years 2006 through 2010.

Toyota does not want Ford to catch them on the Recall count. :shades:

You provided the Toyota Accessory link.

Yes, but using the Built My Toyota tool you can indeed get side molding from the factory, try it with the RAV4.

    This is a non-issue.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's more like it, they were slacking off there for a while! LOL

Actually Gary, think about it - NHTSA says it's not electronic, so Toyota wants closure.

This could be more about jockeying for position against the pending lawsuits. They point to mats to limit their liability.

Right or wrong, read between the lines and that's likely what this is really about.

Where's the conspiracy theory? I am the boss.

You guys are slacking, too! LOL

Any how, the bigger news is oil over $100/barrel. Where's the end of the line for the Prius V?
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
It would take a lot more than $100 or even $150 oil to get me into a Prius. My gas bill last year on the Sequoia was $667. License $443 and insurance $922. Average price per gallon in 2010 was $2.54. What that amounts to is gas would have to go up to $5.19 per gallon to even match my basic license and insurance for the year. If I drove a lot I would probably think more about getting a VW, Mercedes or BMW diesel SUV. Hard for me to put out that kind of cash for as little as I would use the vehicle. Never would I consider a Prius as adequate transportation, no matter how much gas is.

Safety is a much higher concern than gas price. Too many drug crazed drivers in CA with our out of control Medical Pot laws, to risk my life or those with me in any econobox.

I'll take one of those, sure.

I was thinking more like my dad's old Land Cruiser - vinyl seats, knobby tires, diesel engine, manual trans.

    A *real* SUV.

Shoot, I can't even find an image of one without chrome and cladding and leather. Sigh.

Looks to me like they sell as fast as they get them at a very high price.

They have access to very high quality vinyl nowadays, you can hardly tell the difference to leather on the better stuff. Heck, ask fintail, MB-tex is nicer than the leather on some cars.

The FJ Cruiser could have been an amazing vehicle. Instead it looks like a cartoon of its old self, the blue/white colors inspired by port-a-pottys.

    image

And Premium fuel? On an FJ? It should run on the urine of whatever animal you kill in the Outback of Australia.

And you can't even see out of the darn thing.

    Epic Fail.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,471
I'd wager an extreme amount of money that the average consumer couldn't tell modern MB-Tex from leather.

The FJ...horrible visibility, goofy looks, insane gas guzzler, premium required...yeah, they botched it. Imagine it with a nice diesel and some better design...
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I was excited when the announced the FJ Cruiser. It was a disappointment on many levels. rear seat access horrible. A vehicle only Helen Keller would want. I don't think it reached the pinnacle Toyota envisioned for it. Knocking off the Jeep Wrangler is not even close to reality.
    2010 sales record
    Wrangler= 94K
    Fj Cruiser= 14K

Toyota had the perfect chance to bring back the old Land Cruiser from the 1960s with an updated running gear. The Wrangler looks the same as it did back in the 1960s. And that is what off roaders want. Not some cheapo plastic toy.

A rare consensus, but we all agree.

Wrangler is getting the Pentastar V6 this year and then a nicer interior next year. That advantage will grow even more.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Wrangler is getting the Pentastar V6

Wrangler sales could hit the stratosphere if they offered a nice high torque 4 cylinder diesel. I think the issues they had with the Italian diesel may have scared Chrysler off of diesel. Though they did sell better than expected.

A good off road vehicle needs lots of torque at low RPM. Crawling over rocks is not for high HP, high RPM engines.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They never offered the diesel from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, right?

I'd be a little worried about cost. It added a few k to the JGC's price.

bring back the old Land Cruiser from the 1960s

I heard a tale today about a city slicker taking his Land Cruiser around the berm and driving it up some road that was limited to snow-machine traffic only for the winter. He got stuck 8 miles in and spun the tires so much he caught the Land Rover on fire and burned it to a crisp.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Rover, or Cruiser?

Old Rovers used to basically spontaneously combust. ;)

Either way, sounds like an old wives' tale. Mythbusters did a show about spinning tires catching fire, and did everything, to no avail.

Oh yeah, this is a Toyota discussion. Always confuse the old Cruisers and Rovers. He said Rover. He was full of tales though (and old Norwegian Yooper jokes).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Capable cars, but not exactly reliable.

Tell you what, though, with Explorers and Durangos and Highlander Hybrids at $49k loaded up, as I saw at recent auto shows, an LR4 suddenly seems a lot more appealing.

They're only half a step up in price from those.

Well, the last guy I knew (in meatspace) with an old Cruiser back in the late 80s had parked it under his eaves. Couldn't afford to keep it running. And it was like those pics above - pretty basic bunch of sheet metal and vinyl inside. Like my old CJ-5. He did love it when it ran.

Too many horror stories about Rovers for me to take a flyer on a used one, but I guess they all aren't Freelanders.

To be fair, it's a lot harder to make a car reliable when it has twice as many gizmos and gadgets, and luxury cars tend to have more of those.

I'm more interested in scores within a segment.

Lexus division up 0.2%, Toyota division up a whopping 49%!

    http://pressroom.toyota.com/pr/tms/document/Feb.2011.Sales.Chart.pdf

Big gainers: Avalon up 177%, Scion tC up 93%, Sienna up 118%, Highlander up 139%.

Big losers: Lexus SC down 96% (it was discontinued), HS down 74%.

The HS is a surprise because overall hybrid sales were actually up 50.2%.

Could it be customers are waiting for the Lexus CT, perhaps?
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Looks like February was a great month for all the auto makers. Ford maintained their 2nd place position well ahead of Toyota. Lexus is still in 4th place behind BMW, MB and Cadillac. I kind of expected the Sienna to beat out the Odyssey. I think Honda managed to OUT UGLY the pack in the Mini van category.

All said if it were not for the RX Lexus might as well shut the doors. Can't even get rid of last years models. :shades:
