He's just not the "I'm sorry" type

Sorry to hear that richard. May be a good idea to send him(?) an email to air out your differences. Some people, like, say the Fonz,.. just have a problem saying that word. You may not get an "I'm sorry", but at least you'll feel better at having made a good faith effort.

Sent him an email a few minutes ago saying it would probably be sometime next week before I could come in.

If you're serious that's past the end of the month. I thought you knew that the end of a given month is usually the best time to buy. It was for me in '05. In a couple of days Mrs j's '05 XG350 will be 5 years old.

I guess you didn't have a chapter for that in the 'Jipster Book of Getting Screwed When Buying a Car", huh? :confuse:

Chrysler ruined Jeep and its brand equity and I think Jeep`s future in US is not looking too good !

I disagree. The 2011 GC is getting great press. Let's hope they execute it well. The new Pentastar V6 engine looks very promising as well.

They are going to kill the Patriot and Compass. Let's see with what they replace them. No info so far.

Finally, the Wrangler. It's "the" Jeep. It's been announced that Fiat will not mess with it. On the contrary, they are pouring resources into it to address the complaints -- Power (the new Pentastar should be available in 2012), crappy interior (the Ram's interior and the GC's interior are miles ahead of any current models).

They also want Jeep to sell more abroad. So I disagree with you about the future of Jeep. It will remain a niche brand (which makes sense), but it's in a good position.

i have some very nice friends and until recently, i have only driven 'M' cars and several times as they have gone through upgrades.
since then, i have driven a more mainstream model, and it reminded me a lot of my mustang, driving wise.
the 'M's are at a whole different level.

can't remember what was on your original list, but since you want Boxy, did you consider the pilot? Boxes don't come squarer or blockier than that!

Also, if you want to go fancy, is the MDX boxy enough? I rode in my BILs yesterday (and have driven it too), and man, that is a nice driving loaded up vee-hicle.

driver....you know, regardless of what the trade rags have said, everyone I've ever known that's had a Jeep product absolutely loves them. And, there have been plenty.

I don't know how a JGC has missed my garage over the years, because I've always liked them.

I think now that Chrysler has some breathing room via Fiat and all of us, I think things may actually start to get interesting for all of their brands again.

Jipster and Richard, I feel sales/buying stories coming just over the horizon from both of you. ;)

That would be a thrill, but I doubt I would buy an "M". They must be spectacular though. My wifes 335 is so much better than my 328. I was going for economy, she wanted the extra's. If I was to do it over again I would have gone with the 335.

Guess if I tried an "M", then I would want that....probably better not to even try one.

"...but what ever happened to the Tennessee Explorer you were negotiating to get?"

No, I don't mind speaking to the topic. Joel and I set up the negotiations to add life to this forum. Actually, it was to be a serious exchange. We had finally reached the point of an offer/counter offer. Joel verified my counter offer, but suddenly disappeared and hasn't been back on this forum since that day. Another poster told us that Joel's boss had a discussion with the staff about being on-line too much while at work. Joel sent word that he would be back here soon. It has been a while, so I don't know where he is now.

Joel's a great guy so I haven't worried that we didn't complete the deal. It had been so long that I finally tore up my notes and moved on. Hopefully, he'll come back here before too long. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to buy a car from Joel or several other salesmen on this thread. BTW, I looked on Joel's dealer site about two weeks ago. They still have the red Explorer.

Looking back, I guess it was a silly idea to negotiate for an Explorer in Tennessee. By that I mean that there are so many of them around here. We were planning a trip to Nashville and Memphis at the time that Joel and I first began talking about the Explorer. I had thought about trading with him when we went on the trip. As it turned out, we had to cancel the trip. When and if we do go, I hope to stop by his dealership and greet him. I'm a little skiddish about meeting any of you in person. Personal appearances can be so different than chatting on forums. Still, it would be nice to meet him.

A Toyota?! A TOYOTA?! Have you completely lost your mind?! Wait. You weren't here when I joined this site. A terrible Toyota experience is what brought me here. I won't bore the regulars here with my saga again. If interested, go back to the posts dated for September of 2007. You can read the whole thing which covers three or four days. You'll discover that I was a pompous, indignant, a--hole who needed to be set straight. Great posters like Mackabee (rest his soul), Isellhondas, Jmonroe, Joel, Imazda, Greenpea, and others set me straight right quick. I didn't go away because I knew that they were right about my attitude. As far as dealing with car salesmen, my perspective was permanently changed...in a positive way.

I would never buy a Toyota if it was the last car on earth. We'll just let it rest there. Thanks for trying to help.

No, no. It wasn't you. Though we haven't always agreed, we respect each other. I've always taken your advice seriously. I even cut back on the grammar corrections and jokes, remember? :P You can be direct, but you're never hurtful.

I hated that it happened with one of our mutual posters. He knows who he is. He continued to respond for a bit after it happened, but I didn't respond back to him. His remark wasn't one of disagreement; it was a deep personal cut. I just couldn't get beyond it. If you watch closely, you'll see that we never respond to each other now. He's really a good person. I don't won't to make him out to be the bad guy. It just happened and we have to live with it.

Thanks for your comment. I really appreciate it.

    LOL. True.;)

The single greatest advantage I have at this moment is I'm in no hurry to buy. The sales associate has sent me 5 emails and 2 phone calls in 3 days. This guy is desperate. He's tired of eating off of the McDonalds value menu. He needs a sale. This dealership needs a sale. Frankly I'd rather wait till mid summer when there are bigger rebates and still a good selection of vehicles. But, if they throw a crazy low number at me... I'll be ready to dust off the ole checkbook. :)

You are right, when you don't "have" to buy it confuses the dealer, and makes them a touch frantic sometimes.

You are also perfectly positioned to make a reverse lowball. Just scout around to figure out what a killer deal today would be (basically the number they could shoot you in the E ail to get you off your duff and into the store). Then knock off another $xx (say, $1,500, or whatever floats your personal boat).

Then if they have a unit that is exactly what you want, make them a graphicguy type offer. Write the number on a piece of paper (with TTL added), and hand it to them and see what they do!

In this case "beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder". The MDX is definitely flashier, computer-age looking, jazzier, more space-agey, definitely more bells and whistles.

The Mercedes is just good old fashioned simple, elegant, and timeless design, that will always look good.

I've been holding one against a regular poster here for months now.

Hmmm -- at first I thought I fit the profile, except that if it were me we'd be talking years instead of months.

I do second the notion that this is the best board I've seen on Edmunds in the ten years I've been on. I was able to give my home laptop a full-up enema over the weekend using free software recommended here.

GG, I think the G has a simple but elegant interior that you will never get tired of..it is timeless in design. It looks better than the C Class shown below, mainly because of the color....black interior doesn't come out as good in a picture. I prefer the interior of older C Classes more, the one from 2 generations ago was actually nicer than the last generation, and the last generation was nicer than this one.

I think Mercedes is trying to be more like BMW, they want people to think of them more as performance cars than just luxury cars, because that is the way the market is going (note the sales of BMW).

Accua's definitely have a WOW factor, Mercedes is more of the classic, simple, elegant look. One isn't better than the other, just depends on individual taste.

Here is a 1999 C Class interior which I think is nicer than the next two generations.
This car is over 10 years old and the interior looks nicer than 90% of the cars built today...it is simple and elegant and will never go out of style.

Not to offend, but that is a good way to insure he will never have to buy a car. I don't think the dealer or salesman is desperate - what I think is they have an over aggressive manager who is trying to bury the buyer with attention - albeit pointless attention.

What am I going to do about you? That wasn't the remark you turkey. It was the night that I made a joke about another poster's grammar and you told Tidester that I was a "fake". You did it in a serious way. It hurt for two reasons: (1) You had been one of my favorite poster friends. We had shared a lot of humorous banter. (2) I've always tried to be a sincere person. I detest "fake" people. I know. I should have been mature enough to get over it.

Mackabee and I used to discuss the posters here---99% good comments I might add. He said, "Jmonroe is forgetful. He just says things and moves on." He wanted me to find a way to patch things up. I hope this does it. He would be pleased. I would be, too.

Thanks for responding. I won't tell the others that you were on my "S---list." :P You've got me in a bad spot. It will take me forever to catch up on my furniture remarks, your new car, and your new tires. ;) See? I did keep up with you. :D

I only drop in here once in a while, but when I do I used to enjoy Mackabee's stories and pictures a lot. I've noticed that he hasn't been here for quite a while, but I've just recently realized from a few posts that it seems like he's passed away. What sad news. He was certainly a remarkable man and a wonderful and witty storyteller. My sympathies to his friends and family.

In watching the Senate hearings on Goldman Sachs I can't help but think how a car dealer would fare in a similar hearing.

Could you have sold the car for $1k less and still made a reasonable profit?
Did you know that trading upside down would cause the buyer to default?
Did you oversell customers or did you let the buyer choose the debt load?

LOL... "reverse lowball". I believe that's called MSRP isn't it? ;)

Actually your numbers are fairly close to what it would take to get me off my duff and buy TODAY. Edmunds list my MPV at $6,500 TMV dealer trade-in. I think it's worth the $8,000 private party, which is what I could get if I sold it myself. Add that to the $2,000 discount, which is off their already low number, that floats my boat... and they just made a sale. Man... thought I'd never be able to buy a new car for 53 bucks. :P
