kirstie - a big dog is the best security system there is. We've had a couple of lab mixes. The older one would not harm a fly but looked like he could take down anyone. The younger one looks goofier but would be much more likely to attack if he thought we were threatened. He's stil basically a goofball.
gg - Around here pro tickets are insane but I have season tickets for Rutgers. Started in 2007. That first year tickets were a hot item and I came close to paying for the four seats I've got by selling two of them. A couple of mediocre seasons later it ain't so easy. Since there's a reasonable shot the Big Ten is calling for them I'll go one more season. If no invite I'll likely give up.

Tell me you can't do my deal, if that's the case. You won't hurt my feelings. I'll either find a dealership who is willing, or my numbers are off and I have to rethink my deal.
Same here. On my Mazda MPV the sales manager was implying he couldn't go any lower in price. No problem. I tell him I'll have to go home and recheck my numbers, If I made an error I would come back (the truth). He stops me as I'm standing up, says he'll recheck his numbers and see what he can do. This happened one more time before they met my number. I don't mind playing the game, I think it's somewhat entertaining and a challenge, as long as it is done in a respectful and courteous manner by both parties.
That is the key..."respectful and courteous manner"
That will work wonders. It really isn't a war.
Also, don't lie to us. We know what the truth is.
And, despite what the "experts" tell you, if you have a trade in, don't conceal it and spring it after the deal is done. We already can smell it coming.
My lease is up in July, so I started looking around about.... oh, August 2008, or about a month after I got it...
Really, I wasn't looking to get another car until closer to the lease expiration, but when you are looking for a specific used car, you have to grab it when available..
Couple of weeks ago, spotted an ad on-line, but with no pictures. It was at a dealer about 60 miles from where I live. Description was a little incomplete, but had enough clues to think it fit my needs. Thursday evening, I e-mailed the specific salesperson listed in the ad. I was off work the next day, and amazingly had a reply at 9:30 am. A real reply, not an automated reply, or a generic, "come on down!". Not only that, he answered all of the questions I posed in my first e-mail. According to his answers, the car met all my requirements.
We called and set-up an appointment.. I got there about 2:15pm and he had the car waiting for me in front of the showroom. We took about a 20-minute test drive.. I spent about another 20 minutes looking over the car. The dealer is the same make as the car, so we pulled all the service records, warranty expiration, etc, etc.. and, all looked pretty good. The car had all the options I wanted, low miles, acceptable color and condition.
He asked me if I was interested in the car. Said I might be, but not at their price. He didn't even ask me to make an offer. Said he would talk to his sales manager, and see what they could do. Came back with two numbers.. a selling price that was about $850 less than the asking, plus an OTD number that included doc fees/title, etc (but, not tax/registration, as I live out of state). He described the OTD number as "what you will write the check for". That number was about $300 more than the selling price (typical for Ohio). The nice thing about that, was now we had a "total" number to negotiate on..
I offered about $1900 under the new "total" number.. Salesman trotted back over to the sales manager (sitting at a nearby desk).. Manager came back with him, introduced himself (all nice guys, seemingly). Writes his number at the top of a piece of paper...writes my number at the bottom.. draws a line between them and says, "Is there somewhere between these two numbers we can meet?" I place a mark about 1 millimeter above my price, and say, "Somewhere around there". He writes a number that is $1000 over my offer next to my mark (wouldn't want him measuring carpet..lol). I just noted that was too much, and I think my offer is fair/good.. He said how about $500 more... No, I think I'll stick with my offer..
The two of them excuse themselves, get up and walk around the corner out of sight... I amuse myself by looking at the new Volvos in the showroom.. After what seems like a long time (10 minutes?), the salesman comes back and sticks out his hand and says, "Congratulations, we have a deal". I'd say the whole process of negotiation was about 20 minutes.
The F&I guy tried to sell me about $4000 worth of stuff... which I declined. It's amazing how incredulous they can be about that. But, in his office for maybe a total of 15 minutes. No financing, so that made it go more quickly. The check was written for exactly the amount negotiated on the floor.
I left my car there... and drove it home... I left just about 2 hrs, 15 min. after I arrived. Easy deal... very professional salesman. He never once mentioned what they or he would make on the car. Also, never asked me what I did for a living (I'm wearing shorts, sandals and a polo shirt, and I'm there on a weekday). The sales manager did note that the price I was offering was wholesale, but not a word about profits or margins.. very refreshing!
Geez! What a long post... If you are still reading, I'm very, very happy with my new (old) car!
Walt....sweet ride. I even like the color. I like those guys over at the BMW Store. I know some people don't like their competitor (Jake). But, I always seem to do just a little bit better with Jake. You mentioned new Volvos. Are they selling new Volvos, too? It's been a few years since I was over around that neck of the woods.
BTW....if I knew you were the reason the Bengals weren't making the playoffs, I would have urged you to get rid of your tickets sooner. :P
Are you saying that the new car deal and the trade-in deal should not be done separately? I thought that the advice here was to keep them separated. Why did this tactic upset you? Dealers keep their deals separate---the Mop & Glow, extended warranties, GAP, etc. are sprung on us in the F&I office. The salesman doesn't share all of that information on his 4-square sheet. I will admit that he shares the TTL though. Since you are retired now, I'm trying to keep your dues here as low as possible. :P
kirstie....for a minute there, I wasn't sure if you were referring to your boyfriend as a pitbull, or an actual pet (maybe they're one in the same) :shades: .
I enjoyed the post, and you did a great job posting the pictures. Congratulations! I love the color. I wouldn't know the car from a brand new one. It looks flawless.
A trade in is worth what a store can buy one for at the local auction and nothing more.
A slight disagreement on this one, at least that was the case when I last traded.
I’ve told the tale about when I bought the Genny from the dealer in Ohio when I traded in Mrs. J’s ’06 Sonata LX with 13,200 miles on it that was in as perfect condition as you can get except for the whacked passenger side mirror (complements of ‘you know who’). Anyway, the dealer offered 9K via our phone conversation (knowing about the mirror) but I knew it was worth more than that, given its condition. When we arrived they took it for a test drive and came back and said, “yeah, it’s in great shape alright. We can give you 9K for it just like I said”. I said, “I want 9600” and I got it and it didn’t take long to get it either. I’d say 5 minutes tops. All it took was one trip to the tower and when he came back he didn’t even give me a counter offer.
I seriously doubt they could have bought a car in that good of condition at the auction and they knew it. I also said that the real money that was to be made on that deal would come from my trade. I watched their web site (thanks to the info that ‘imid’ provided) for the sale of my trade so I know that was the case. It didn’t bother me that they made their money there because I got what I wanted on both ends of the deal. As an individual, I could never have sold that car for what they sold it for. IIRC they got just under 13K.
Sometimes there is a win/win situation.

Geez! What a long post... If you are still reading, I'm very, very happy with my new (old) car!
I read every word and it was a good story, great deal....very nicely played out, and a fantastic car. Even the pictures came out good....though I got lost in another conversation and it took me awhile to realize I was lost and had to come back.
Is that your first BMW?
If it is, you will have been converted forever, nothing else will do. Enjoy your new car.
“I want 9600” and I got it and it didn’t take long to get it either.
I have to agree with you JM. If a car is in perfect condition the dealer is crazy not to offer a little extra to get it. Who knows what you are really getting at the auction, but a nice clean car brought in is going to fetch more....with little work on it. Not to mention, not spending time or money at the option.
It is also a great sales tool because it always sounds good for the dealer to say the car was bought at that dealer and all the maintenance was done there.
In my humble opinion, the dealer was smart to spend the extra $600 to get that car.
GG.. Actually, I bought it in Dayton... The guys at The BMW Store switched out the plate bracket when I had it in there Saturday for a sticky door handle.. The dealer is on the North side... has BMW, VW and Volvo..
Isell.. Yeah, the color isn't my first choice, but it looks really good... That color is only available on M3's and Performance Pkg 330s.. Imola Red.
Richard... thanks! It looks that good in person, as well.. the only flaws are a hood that has more than its share of gravel chips... but, already had my local body shop do a re-touch up job... Much better when done by a pro..
Driver.. My 2nd BMW (first one was a '67 coupe).. My wife is currently on her 3rd BMW, so we are very familiar with them... This will be my daily driver, once my current lease ends in July..
LOL... didn't take much prying to get that story out of you. A good one too.
Nice looking bimmer/beamer. Where was the sale price in relations to Edmunds posted numbers? i.e below trade-in, private party or dealer retail. If the sales manager said the price was wholesale, then you got it for below Edmunds trade-in value. Must be nice having all that insider information. :shades:
jmonroe - I would have given you an extra $100 for that Sonata. Next time just ask....
I'm kind of poking around on such matters. I still don't have a firm "we can fix it" let alone a price on the Celica roof. It works perfectly fine as a coupe.....
Mazda having 0% financing is getting tempting....
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
I've had the car for almost two weeks... Every time I would post about it, would get asked for pictures.. Our camera died about 3 months ago..
So, bought a new camera this weekend, and finally took pictures today.. That story has been burning a hole in my pocket... lol..
I'll have to look up the Edmunds pricing... Didn't really pay that much attention to it... I've been following asking prices for that model for awhile, though.... and knew what I'd be willing to pay... I'll report back!
Makes a fantastic point as usual. Who cares how much money you "leave on the table.". As long as YOU think you got a fair deal & you were treated respectfully & you did the same to your selling dealer, then that's all that matters. It is a business transaction & nothing else.
I'm going to try graphicguy's approach the next time around.
I've posted this here quite a few times, but when I bought my wife's 2010 Acura TSX last August trying to capitalize on Cash 4 Clunkers. Did I pay too much for the car? No. Did I overpay for the car? If you look at what TSXs are selling for today, then yes. Does it matter to me? No. I broke even (much better than what I did selling our first apt a few months ago) on a project car (1990 BMW 325ia) that needed a lot more work. I got the car I wanted with the interior color I had to have (black interior is a must for me). I called this dealer on the last day C4C was going on & he happened to have what I was looking for in stock. If I was willing to take a car with a different interior color I could have gotten it cheaper or if I was willing to take a base model, I could have gotten the car cheaper.
At the time, it was the last day of C4C, the 2010 TSX had only been out for 2 weeks, there were no incentives or special financing rates. I paid $1000 under sticker before TTLR.
9 months & just a tick over 10,000 miles later, I couldn't be happier with the car I bought that will hopefully last my family the better part of 150,000 miles. The bill comes in & I'm more than happy to pay it.

$19,300 trade-in $21,500 private party $23,400 dealer retail
They also have a CPO price that is $2200 higher... Mine has the CPO warranty, but this dealer didn't market it that way, pay for the warranty, or provide CPO reconditioning (added by a previous owner) It has an extra 2 years of warranty, which is worth something... Actually, still two months before the original 4-yr warranty expires...
I paid under that private party number.... naturally... lol...
EDIT: KBB numbers are all $2K+ higher.. :surprise:
Who knows what you are really getting at the auction, but a nice clean car brought in is going to fetch more....with little work on it.
I never mentioned this part.
When the lot boy was transferring a couple of things from the trunk of the Sonata to the Genny, I went outside to make sure everything was cleared out of the Sonata. The kid said, “I don’t ever remember seeing one come in this clean. Once we put a mirror on this car all we’ll have to do is wash it and put it out on the lot. I don’t think we’ll even have to wax it. The inside doesn’t look like we’ll have to vacuum it either”. So that was probably another factor in me getting my price they knew they wouldn’t have to put much into it to sell it. I’ll go to my grave always thinking, ‘if Mrs. j hadn’t whacked that mirror I could have gotten another $300’.
‘fez’ I remember ’jip’ saying he would have given me more than $100 over what the dealer gave me. He said chapter 4 of his book said it warranted something like $1500 more.

Actually, there were 18,000 voters with a 30% turn out which netted 5,400 voters. Also, my wife didn't want me to run because her father had been a state legislator for 25 years. She hates politics. The only reason that she voted for me was because she couldn't stand my opponent's wife. :P Irguy was right.
I know some people don't like their competitor (Jake). But, I always seem to do just a little bit better with Jake.
My problem with Jake was that I walked on to their CPO lot prepared to pay cash for a three year old 540i Sport and was ignored for over 15 minutes. Morons.

I took my 1995 318ti to my local BMW dealer to have a tire patched and one of the service advisers repeatedly hinted that he'd like to buy it. A couple of customers and techs also complimented it. Sorry,Charlie. I ain't selling it...

nyc.....the way I deal isn't for everyone. Give it a shot. When friends/family, etc ask me to go along with them to help buy a car, they always say the same thing. That is, "what if I don't like the deal you propose?". My answer is always the same...."then don't buy the car."
It's not a crime for the buyer to say "no". Nor, is it a crime for the dealer to say "no".
I'm probably going to have to sell my son's '03 Elantra here shortly (he's been using the Accord, although he's not real fond of it). Isell's got me a bit skittish, though.
It needs a paint job. There's some rust sneaking through on the driver's rear quarter panel. It's got a manual tranny. It's got over 100K miles. It's been serviced religiously and runs just fine. A/C works. Power windows work. Brakes and tires are good. It doesn't use a drop of oil. But, I'm not so certain I want to go through the hassle of getting it all sparkly if I'm looking at getting....I dunno...what? $2,000 for it? Even if I put new paint on it, I'm not certain that it would add appreciably to its value. I might even be optimistic in thinking it's a $2,000 car.
It would be great for someone who's looking for something cheap to commute in (if they don't mind flaky paint and a little rust). But, that person would also have to know how to drive a manual trans car.
What say you pros? What's this "gem" worth? Private Sale price? How about if I was looking to trade it for a base pick'em up truck I could use for light hauling duty?
You were up in our area to buy that beauty. How did you like the awkward exit to get to that store? That location used to be near the end of the old I75 exit ramp, but it and lot of other businesses got orphaned when the exit moved to reconstruct the I70 interchange.
About $2800.... Better than I thought I would do.. I might have paid $500 more, if that's what it took.. (I'm terrible at holding the line, if I really want the car).
I didn't really expect to get up there and have the car meet my needs and expectation.... and then, be able to make a deal.. But, that's why I always take my checkbook!
Yeah... when I called the salesperson, he was giving me all sorts of convoluted directions... I thought, "yeah, yeah, yeah.. been by the place a thousand times... I'll just get off at Poe Avenue". Fortunately, some of it stuck with me (the exit number particularly), or I would have been flying on by it..
I'm not going to plug the dealership here.... except to say the salesman was very professional, they were all friendly, and even the owner came out to introduce himself as I was taking final delivery.. Nice place!
It's an '06... 40K miles.. It is CPO... until July, 2012.
First off, let me also say that is a very nice car and I’m sure you’re happy with it but I think you and Son # 1 might be able to work something out in about 2 years when the CPO runs out. Then we’ll have a sales tale with an Edmunds connection.
I think you said that beauty is an M3 and my Son said in a couple of years he’s probably going to be looking to buy a 4 to 6 year old M3. It happened like this:
The regulars here know that my Son bought a ’95 Trans AM as a track car last spring and he likes it very much and his friend bought a ’99 M3 coupe on Ebay last summer and they both go to the track somewhat regularly on week ends. His friend is a pretty good driver but he hasn’t made it up to a Class 3 driver rating yet (no instructor needed for the passenger seat) like my Son. His friend is a Class 2 driver (needs a chaperone) but my Son says he’ll surely get to Class 3 in another week end or two.
Needless to say, they have both run around the track a few times and my Son has always won. At the end of the track season last year they agreed to switch cars and my Son, driving the M3, wins again and by a decent margin. He said it is more than just his driving ability. The M3 is just that much better on the track. All winter long I’ve heard him saying, “that car is so much more planted to the track than my car I can’t believe it. In a couple of years I’m going to have to give some real thought about getting one of those if I’m going to take this track thing seriously. I think I’m going to be in the market for a 4 to 6 year old M3”.
So, is there a chance of that happening? You don’t have to keep it perfectly waxed because he can do that and he doesn’t want it for its looks. He wants it for what it does on the track.
‘roadburner’ I’ve said this before, that kid is HOOKED.

Mazda having 0% financing is getting tempting....

You make mine sound like verbose mini-series.

$21,500 private party
$23,400 dealer retail
They also have a CPO price that is $2200 higher... Mine has the CPO warranty, but this dealer didn't market it that way, pay for the warranty, or provide CPO reconditioning (added by a previous owner) It has an extra 2 years of warranty, which is worth something... Actually, still two months before the original 4-yr warranty expires...
I paid under that private party number.... naturally... lol...
EDIT: KBB numbers are all $2K+ higher.. :surprise:

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
I didn't really expect to get up there and have the car meet my needs and expectation.... and then, be able to make a deal.. But, that's why I always take my checkbook!

I'm not going to plug the dealership here.... except to say the salesman was very professional, they were all friendly, and even the owner came out to introduce himself as I was taking final delivery.. Nice place!

First of all, a cheapy paint job will do more harm than good.
Ah....Good Luck!
I mean it runs...quite well, as a matter of fact. Everything works on it. Is it really that "unsellable"?
Not even worth a couple grand?
If that's the case, I may just donate it to Goodwill and take the write-off.
You don’t have to keep it perfectly waxed
‘roadburner’ I’ve said this before, that kid is HOOKED.
