Thanks for your kind thoughts. My pneumonia is less debilitating now than it was a couple of weeks ago. I saw the pulmonary specialist again last week and he said it just has to run its course. I'll take another X-ray in 2 weeks to see if the pneumonia has dissipated.
I saw the dermatologist this afternoon and all he said about the welt on my abdomen (which is still present) is that he has NO DIFINITIVE DIAGNOSIS! That's just a way of saying he HAS ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA OF WHAT IS CAUSING IT! All the blood tests and biopsies were negative.
Good grief. What can I say? Aging is no bowl of cherries!
Leasing a car is almost always the worst way to buy a car (if you are intending to buy the car at the end of the lease)! Lease interest rates (money factors) are usually higher than loan rates and remember, when you lease a car, you are paying interest (money factor) on THE WOLE CAR (total price of leased car) for the term of the lease. You are not paying interest on just a fraction of the cost of the car - it's the entire value of the car. Most people don't realize this when they lease.
I would only lease if:
1. I could write off the lease somehow to reduce my overall costs for tax reasons
2. If the monthly costs of the lease were significantly lower than buying the car during a time period when I had a cash flow problem as I outlined to you when I had two kids in college at the same time or some other circumstance during a temporary cash flow problem for 2 or 3 years.
I would never lease a car with understanding I would buy the car at lease end. It is rare that that situation is as good or better than a purchase.
That is usually the most expensive way to buy a car.
But, at least you have an option of deciding whether you want it or not.
I know someone who always buys the cheapest. He keeps his cars until they start to fall apart, usually 9 or 10 years. He was going to buy another Civic but found the Hyundai Accent would cost $4000 less.
I asked him how he liked his new car.
He said, great, and I saved $4000. That's the line he always says when someone asks how he likes his car.....and the best part is I saved $4000. I could have saved $50k if I want to drive an Accent...if saving a few bucks was all I cared about. I like to get some enjoyment out of life!
Well, if you don't care what you drive, if you don't mind putting a big pillow on the seat so you can see out of it, if you don't mind having minimal room for back seat passengers, if you don't mind little tiny lawn mower wheels, if you have little regard for comfort or driving enjoyment, then yes, you can save a bundle.
But, some people can afford and want more out of life so they buy a car that gives them some personal satisfaction and enjoyment. If it costs a few $1000 more over 5 or 6 years it isn't the end of the world....they won't be sitting in the basement with a bottle of cheap wine saying, geez, if only I hadn't leased that car and if I had bought it instead, I would be much better off today.
I would never lease a car with understanding I would buy the car at lease end. It is rare that that situation is as good or better than a purchase.
I agree completely with all your points, but, I am not so sure about the last one.
Sometimes people lease a car, like you did, because of a special situation.
However, in 3 years time, the car might still be good and you have paid it down to about half of it's value. There may even be a bonus if you could write it off. What a great time to buy it to use as a 2nd car...where will you find a comparable car for that price? You may even use it yourself, if you think it was a really good car and you can get extra miles from it.
I agree, it isn't best to lease a car and then plan to buy it back at the end of the lease for yourself, but if it works out at the time, it might be worth it.
I leased a 1984 Camaro, wrote it off for business use, bought it at the end of the lease, and made a profit selling it privately for $4000 more than the buy back....at a time when that $4000 was a really big deal to me.
I leased a 79 Cutlass, bought it back, and it made a great 2nd car for my wife to use.
Owning will usually cost you less, but there is a time and a place leasing makes perfect sense.
New because it was never titled so it came with the original warranty. Hyundais 100k power train warranty isn't transferable. That's how they can say "new". I wouldn't buy that.

I may have told yiou this story. If so, I apologize. A bus driver walked into my office one day several years ago. He threw the bus keys down on my desk and said, "I drove a jeep and a truck through bombing raids in Vietnam, but that was nothing compared to this. I quit!" When I asked him where the bus was, he told me and also added that the children were still on the bus. You can't imagine the scene when the transportation director and I drove up in front of that bus. With 3,000 employees, I never had a dull day in personnel.
As for this poor bus monitor, she deserves every dollar donated to her. School principals have their hands tied when dealing with these issues. The board of education is more concerned about being sued than in doing what is right for adults and children. We were always told in personnel that the term "litigation" was an unacceptable alternative. I was sued once but I had a Roadburner when we got to court. He took care of the situation in about twenty minutes.
