nothing to lose really. If they screw it up, it'll drive you nuts, and give you an excuse to dump it for something new right now.

though with the wedding, might not be the best plan...

There will be absolutely no car purchases right now. None!!!

For a very BRIEF moment I thought about those good short term leases (the one I posted on CCBA) on the Infiniti G for my fiance. Then I came to my senses.

Jip, just say NO to extended warranties. Whatever happens won't be covered and you'll wish you had the money you wasted on the warranty because that money will (would have) cover(ed) the repairs

On our MPV we traded in, if we had bought the 7 year extended warranty when it was new, probably would not have paid for itself. Close though.

Gone for a year and you STILL haven't done the new dining room yet?

C’mon, it’s not like she’s been denied or anything. She got a new car and a bathroom redo almost back to back.

Most cars cost at least $5000 a year to run

I have to disagree; my 2004 X3 isn't going to cost $5000 miles to run this tear- even though it needed a new transfer case, driveshaft, and tires.
If your friend thinks that driving "a nice new car" is worth spending $9,000 annually that's his call. That said, there is absolutely no way you can call it an astute financial decision.

the btob transfers to a 2nd owner, but I don't think the extended powertrain does.

    That is correct.

The aftermarket 10 year/100lk mile bumper to bumper extended warranty, offered thru a 3rd party, for $1,200 seems like a dang good deal. The warranty thru Hyundai for $1,800 not so good. Too many people advise against the 3rd party warranties.

Yeah, my initial thinking was the 10 year on powertrain would be suffiecent. Suggested to my wife she try not to drive the Cruz too much... so the 100k mile mileage warranty expires when the 10 year warranty is up. She said she's gonna drive the "hell" out of the thing. :surprise:

I have to disagree; my 2004 X3 isn't going to cost over $5,500 to run this year- even though it needed a new transfer case, driveshaft, and tires. And since it has been paid off for five years I have no monthly payments or interest expense. Most years it has cost less than $500 to maintain.
Now, if your friend thinks that driving "a nice new car" is worth spending $9,000 annually that's his call. That said, there is absolutely no way you can characterize it as an astute financial decision.

Actually, Hyundai's powertrain warranty is only good for 40,999.9 miles

Or until they want to get technical about an entry on an owner maintained oil log sheet…whatever comes first.

So powertrain is already covered without the extended warranty. The extended warranty would be bumper to bumper for 10years/100,000 miles

It is nice that most manufacturers have extended warranties on the powertrain, and up to 100K miles sounds impressive.

I have never heard of anyone actually having to use their PT warranty. Even before these long warranties were offered, it is seldom the powertrain that breaks down.

My main concern would be electronics, transmission (is all of included in powertrain), engine parts, etc. which could cost $2000 to $3000 if something goes wrong. And, in 10 years prices will probably be close to double with inflation. On the other hand, you may never need the insurance and you could risk it and you probably have a good chance of coming out ahead.....I think what you are doing is insuring you will have 10 trouble free years of driving, and you won't have to worry about repairs that could be way over $2000....like $10000.

On the other hand, you could say, hey, if I start to have problems in year 5, 6 or 7 I will trade the car in and use the $2000 toward the price of a new car.

There is no exact right answer. Some people buy life insurance so their families can get along if something happens to them. You don't buy it hoping to get your moneys worth, you buy it for peace of mind. Generally, buying an EW for a TV is a waste of money because they get cheaper and better with time. You buy it for a car because you can handle the $2000, but you don't want to pay out more than that.

I am actually thinking in your case Jip, you are better off not taking out the EW. I say it because you will resent it if you don't use it, but if you do start to have big repairs you would be better off using the money to pay for them, and then trading the car in.

Some electronic systems are only covered 3/36. I don't know the specifics but know the Radio/Nav/Bluetooth system are part of that

Yep. 3 years on paint, radio, cd player, nav, blue tooth and battery. Don't have the nav though. 1 year on adjustments and air conditioner refrig charge.

Doctor got the results from my chest X-ray and he said I still have pneumonia! What can I say? He ordered Levaquin again and he wants to see me Monday morning. Can't understand why I still have this infection. Really starting to worry me! I've been in bed for 20 of the last 25 days. Whatever is causing this pneumonia to linger is beyond me. He (doctor) didn't seem as concerned as I am - just said this can take several more weeks.

I still say my immune system must really be weak because I've been sick since I bought the Lexus - and that was April 30th.

Oh well, I'll know more on Monday when I see him.

"Free Dealer Price Quotes" is a misnomer; "Free Invitation to Visit the Dealership" is more accurate. My wife mentioned that she'd read that the Nissan Rogue is a nice -albeit boring- CUV and she might consider one(she had very good luck with her 1993 Pathfinder and in 2005 we almost bought an Xterra instead of the X3). We looked at the online configurator and -true to Nissan form- there are no standalone options; you only select the model and/or packages. The top model(SV with SL Pkg.) had only two options we really wanted(sound system upgrade, xenons) but several we didn't(nav, power seats, BIG hole in the roof, 18" wheels), so the base S with the "Special Equipment Package" seemed to be the only choice.
So,I go to Edmunds and fill out the "Free Dealer Price Quote" form, checking the "Buying in the next month" and "Prefer email contact" boxes. In the "Comments" box I state that I'm looking for an AWD S with the Special Equipment Package. Finally, I select three local dealers and submit the form.

Anyone seriously think I've received a price quote yet?

    Yep, nary a one...

Here are the two emails that I have received(both from the same dealer but two different salespeople):

    1. Dear ........,

Thank you for your inquiry on the 2012 Nissan Rogue. As you know, the final price of a vehicle depends on the optional equipment selected. In an effort to help you understand how the Rogue is equipped, I have included some standard configurations of the Rogue in our area.

Economically Equipped: S FWD Sale Price*: $20,775, Xtronic CVT transmission, 16" steel wheels, 4-wheel ABS, AM/FM/CD audio system w/4 speakers, Remote keyless entry and power windows, door locks

Comfortably Equipped: SV FWD Sale Price*: $23,295, 17" Aluminum-alloy wheels, Nissan Intelligent Key, Bluetooth Hands-free phone system, Premium audio system w/ 4.3" color display and rear-view monitor

Luxuriously Equipped: SV w/SL package FWD Sale Price*: $27,330, 18" Aluminum-alloy wheels and power sliding glass moonroof, HID xenon headlights, Leather appointed seats, Heated front seats and outside mirrors, Around-view monitor, Digital Bose audio system with Navigation

The models listed above are also availabe with All-Wheel Drive.

Is there any particular equipment you would like to see in your next car? Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions regarding the Rogue.

    Best Regards,
    ..................., Internet Sales Manager

    2. Dear ........
Thank you for your interest in the 2012 Nissan Rogue. We have several in stock with varying shades and options for your selection. I would like the oppurtunity to show you all the features and benefit's the Rogue offers over the other vehicles you mentioned in your email. When is a convenient time for you to come in? Please provide me the best number and time to reach you.

We look forward to assisting you with your Nissan needs.

    Sincerely,

    .............

And I received a voicemail from another dealer- more of the same "Come in so we can help you find a vehicle that best suits your needs."

What part of "I want an AWD S with the SE Pkg." do they find so difficult to grasp???

well, they do this for a living, and as a rule, are sharp business people, not dopes. And even though it really ticks off the people who really are "outliers", they play the percentages. And that pretty much seems to mean, people who claim to want to do everything through Email don't turn into actual buyers often enough to be worth the time investment. Instead, they give you the basic response, and tell you to come on down if you actually want to see a car and maybe buy it!

I have never heard of anyone actually having to use their PT warranty. Even before these long warranties were offered, it is seldom the powertrain that breaks down.

I have. Twice, Son #1 had to make good on a Chrysler powertrain warranty. The first time was with his ’02 Dodge Grand Caravan when the transmission went out when he had a little over 65K miles. The second time was when he had to have an engine replaced in his ’08 Town and Country in 2010. A week after we came back from our Myrtle Beach vacation. He got the Town and Country for two reasons even though, after his Grand Caravan experience, he figured he might have to make good on the Town and Country powertrain warranty. First, Chrysler had an unlimited mileage powertrain warranty for the first owner and second, because his wife liked it better than the Odyssey they looked at because it had more toys on it. I will say this, when we have taken it on vacation a couple of times it does hold a lot of stuff even though he does use a car top carrier. I am amazed what the wells that second row bucket seats fold into can hold. Nice extra storage area for sure.

When the Town and Country is replaced he has no intention of getting another Chrysler product because even though he has had lots of warranty work done on his ’08 that has not cost him a nickel, he’s tired of the inconvenience of taking it to the shop to have all the nuisance items fixed. They still haven’t found a way to fix the power sliding doors when the van is parked on a slight incline. So far he’s just putting up with it because the dealer has tried three times already and hasn’t fixed it yet. Somebody told him what they thought the problem is so he might give that a try himself. Like I said he’s tired of running to the dealer and losing use of the van for a couple days each time.

When he replaces the van in another year or two, he’s leaning towards a Mazda CX-9 but an Odyssey is not out of the running. He is, however, definitely finished with Chrysler products.

also, plenty of dealers do give quick and straightforward price quotes via email/internet. Fitzmall of course, and in NJ, I requested prices on an Acura RDX from 2 dealers, and got it from both of them (very clear, as in we will sell an AWD base, mspr $36,615 for $xxx). and of course, the internet person to contact about making arrangements to come on in!

but, all the details were there to simply look at the website to find a specific unit, then tell them you want it, and get the sales process started.

but any time you try to work in email, expect it to take much longer, with many more back and forth messages, than if you just had a conversation about it. And understand you have to probably send a bunch of follow-ups to actually unearth the answer you are looking for.

I agree, but if that's actually the case then Edmunds either needs to ashcan the "Get a Free Dealer Quote" process entirely or else require the participating dealers to actually do what Edmunds promises they will do.

    Morons!

Yes, roadburner, morons! When I was a manager, I had a separate Internet dept. that would receive inquiries for pricing. My Internet manager was required to either call the customer if there was a question about model and/or options to precisely identify the car the customer was looking for and then provide a one-time price for the vehicle, no haggling! The price was $350 over my dead cost. He would do the same immediately if the inquiry was complete meaning the customer had identified a vehicle from my inventory.

I would not negotiate the price - $350 over dead cost was as low as I would go. Sales in our Internet department averaged 40% of our total business. All we would ask the customer is, "...when can you come in?" this was our no haggle price on leases and purchases without a trade. If there was a trade involved, they had to bring the trade in for me to appraise. Frequently, the sale would be made quickly. The only problems I ran up against we're trade issues and credit issues.

Yes, dealers should provide you with their best price online. If they want to shop that price, let them - I was not going to sell a car at a loss!

Well, I meant not counting Chrysler mini-vans. Those things suffer from powertrain problems.

The only mini-van Consumers Report recommended in the 2012 choices was Toyotas Sienna, because it was the only one with a better than average repair record.

Thanks, *driver. Just got back from the drug store with the Rx he ordered for me. That Levaquin has some nasty side affects, but he said it is the best antibiotic to fight pneumonia. I already took the first dose - one pill a day for 5 days. It makes my joints hurt and affects tendons in your body.

I was thinking there might be a chemical from the materials in the Lexus that is causing your body to react to it, much like an allergy. Sort of like the bad wallboard from China and the lead paint in toys from China.

mike....I've seen you mention USAA discounts several times. While my late Father was a WWII vet, I don't think he ever had any sort of dealings with USAA. Further, I tried a few years ago to sign up with them, but I didn't qualify (according to them) since my Father never had an account with them.

So, I supposed I can't send them a check to open up a CD? Or, to get my house insured through them?

Only reason I ask, I'm taking bids on insurance and moving some money around. Wouldn't mind getting their bids, especially if somewhere down the road it ends up netting me a big discount on a car.

    So I suppose I can't send them a check…

No, sending them a check won't do it, *graphicguy. This is how it worked for me:

My Dad is a veteran of WWII. He became a member by purchasing an insurance policy with them. Once he got his membership card (a navy blue and white plastic card), I contacted them and got my own membership number and membership card. We each have different membership numbers and ID cards. Because my Dad was a member, I became eligible for membership. Since then, I have purchased two cars from the USAA buying service which for Mercedes, is a huge savings - $4000 below invoice right now on an E Class. I got $2000 below invoice on my 2012.

Now, since I am an active member (I also have one of their credit cards), my kids can get their own memberships. It all starts with a veteran become a member.

    Hope that answered your question.

I want a solid price in order to be able to evaluate our best options for a new/used vehicle with a minimum amount of hassle. If the Nissan dealers can't do at least than $1,500-$2,000 off MSRP it is not worth my time to go look at their inventory.
And again, it just infuriates me that they don't read what I sent and/or they won't provide a price quote- even though Edmunds prominently advertises that those dealers will do so!

I just checked the 2 Passat sites that I check on every once in awhile. It is kind of funny, you ask a question and no one answers. Or you reply to someone's question and you never hear from them again.

Someone asks if they have a good lease deal, they state the model and terms and price, but no one ever gets back to them.

Almost forgot, I may not be on too much this week. Flying to Vancouver to see one daughter who lives there. Then on to Vancouver Island to see our son, DIL, and 4 grandchildren.

Rent a car, drive for 2 hours, then 2 hours along a logging road - have to keep pulling over to let the big logging trucks by - get to their tiny town, park our car on one side of the river - phone them to tell them we arrived - they get in their tiny motorboat and pick us up and take us to the other side of the river - population 150 on each side of the river.

I call them the Back to the Earth people, they believe in living off the land as much as possible.
I will go nuts being in the wilderness for 4 nights. By then I will need a newspaper, pizza, a hamburger, a retail store to visit, a coffee shop, a tennis court, something.......

I remember those Caddies. I'd like to see that place one day. I liked the Chevy 409...they just used a plain Bel Air...you would never know what was really under the hood just by looking at the car.

That was great but I did kind of cringe when he pointed out the Impact because I remember Jay Leno's comment on the name at the time -"What? Was flaming ball of death already taken?"

It wasn’t a "plain Bel Air", it had a real color like Red and a 409 engine. I’m the one that had the plain jane 62 Bel Air. Mine was Woeful White and limped around on a 6 cyl. Now do you understand why I don’t want a small engine when a larger one is offered? Traded that hog for my first new car…a ’66 Bonneville with a V8 389.

"Last night I could not get in here from home..."

I used to have that problem a great deal until I thought of something. Each time that I get an email from Edmunds about new postings, I save the most recent one. When I wish to log on the site, I just click on the email and I'm here. I'm sure that it sounds dumb, but technically challenged people have to take care of themselves. ;)

Though I am late, I wanted to congratulate you and your wife on the new purchase. It's a nice looking vehicle and I hope that you both enjoy it. As for the type of deal that you got, I think that you did well. I've reached the point now that everyone does well if they like what they purchased. I'm growing tired of so much "nic picking" about purchase items. Regardless of the price of an object, you have two choices---either buy it or don't buy it.

Example: We've been looking for a rug for the downstairs guest room. We found one that we liked on sale for $2K. There was another one on sale for $1,500 that would meet expectations. We've shopped this rug deal for two weeks now, plus lamps and fabrics for the window treatments. My wife was lamenting that she loved the $2K rug but that we had been spending a lot of money to get the house just right. I finally told her this, "We've got one foot in the grave and the other one on a banana peel. If you like the damn rug, buy it. After all, how does any person know how long they will have to enjoy it?" She bought the one that she wanted and is a happy camper.

Enjoy that new ride and don't give another thought about the deal. Look at this way: It's a gift to you and the Mrs. from yourselves. You earned it and you have a right to enjoy it.

"...The price was $350 over my dead cost...I would not negotiate..."

That's interesting. I assume that price would only be on an in stock unit rather than a special order.

Would you speculate that your policy is common across the industry? I like the idea of getting a true bottom line price without spending so much time that I have to bring my lunch

And to think that as an American taxpayer I'm part owner of all those fine cars. Think they'd let me take one out for a spin? :)

Just an update on the plumbing line to the street: It's nearly gone and needs replacement immediately. First, the city has to put in a "clean out" at the curb (no charge to me for that one), then the new pipe has to be installed for around $2K, plus the trench across the lawn will be about a yard wide. They set the sod aside and put in back in when they are finished. It's up to me if additional landscaping is needed.

Nyccguy: The roots had gone too far into that old paper piping. Thanks for mentioning the root killer.

On top of this fiasco, we had a terrible flashflood last week with torrential downpours. This caused a bad leak from the downstairs roof to invade the den and kitchen areas. I've got to replace the lower roof immediatley to the tune of $4K. We should then have this old house in good shape. The upper roof is slate and hasn't had a leak in 60 years. They must have done that one right. Am I having fun yet? Hell yes!
