This site is always up and down...

I have the same problems with this site, whether I am using my iPhone or my computer. It either is so slow or I get these strange error messages.

I have noticed that when I start a new "thread", it works fine. But if a m responding to an already existing "long thread" it is very slow.

TJC....The GF has a rotating monthly wine tasting that goes from one friend's house to the next every month. Fortunately, it's only here every 6 months or so. I usually try to be gone when it happens. Last night I had nothing else to do so I stuck around. They were in the kitchen while I was in the den. But, every once in awhile, things would get really quiet in the kitchen, then loud bursts of laughter would erupt. The more wine they drank, the less quiet those "quiet times" became. And, the bluer and funnier the conversation became. I now have blackmail on all of her friends.....LOL!

stick.....I can only imagine that '69 Charger roaring through the backroads of England. That would be some funny stuff if they had filmed people's reactions as the car blasted through the English country side.

I always felt sorry for Ed. He does all the grunt work, getting dirty, greasy sweaty. While Mike....well....I assume he's nothing but a gopher for parts and to buy the cars. It doesn't seem that they make a whole lot of money on those cars, either....especially if they have to split the proceeds when they sell them.

This site has been like that for years...it's dicey at best when getting on. Strange error messages.....woeful load times, etc.

I think it is in sore need of a complete overhaul....especially the forums.

They should just outsource it to Vbulletin like so many other forums use. We could then have PMs, attachment storage, signatures, and other neat features.

Oh well, I'm still here more than anywhere else!

They only bought the yank tanks here...

Yes, I saw those episodes. I truly get a kick out of the two of them. Great show!

As for Chasing Classic Cars, still can't believe the money paid at those auctions for Ferrari's (the "Dino 250", imagine one named after *dino!) and those Mercedes Gullwings. And the amount of work that goes into those restorations. Great shows.

I owned a '67 Stingray fastback 427, a '66 GTO hardtop, '69 GTO hardtop and I love seeing those cars go through the auctions at prices that make me sick that I never held on to those cars. But who knew?

I read a couple of articles about the show. It seems that is started in Great Brittain and then they moved the shows here to see if they could develop a following for Americans. The show used to find very, very cheap cars, fix them up, then sell them for a few "hundred quid", as they might say.

The show has evolved tremendously over the past year or so, where they are now purchasing upscale British, German, Italian and American car, and selling them for a small profit.

They don't split the proceeds - the proceeds are fictitious because if you add in the production costs, etc., the show obviously loses money - but that is to be expected.

Mike was a car salesman for many years and used to appraise cars. Ed China is a master mechanic. Both of them are Executive Producers of the show. I really enjoyed last night's episode where Mike took his Mercedes SUV towing a trailer to Germany, and they obviously travelled through the tunnel connecting France and the UK. Ended up buying a 280 SL and towed it back to the UK.

Yes, I am "hooked" on that show as well as Wayne Carrini's "Chasing Classic Cars."

Mike....I know at least a few of the WD shows had a date on them as far back as 2005. Mike also had a "dealership" show, where he allegedly sold cars from the dealership, as well as tech tips. Don't know if that was fictitious or not.

That said, both shows would find an audience (other than the one that was being chased by the inane "Chop" from Towbin. That show irritated the daylights out of me.

The wife and I bought a "new" 2011 Hyundai Veracruz,…

The Veracruz GLS was a lot demo with 6,000 miles. MSRP was $32,000. Sale price was $27,000 (included mileage discount and dealership discount). I guess that's okay.

C’mon ‘jip’ say it ain’t so. Not that you bought a Hyundai but that you paid $27K for a 2011 Veracruz GLS. I don’t usually do this but I just worked up a price for a 2012 Veracruz GLS with bluetooth, roof rack, mud guards, etc and Edmunds says, with the $1K rebate, the TMV is $27,515 (MSRP $30,090).

So what’s going on here? You have to tell us more about the options, right !!!!

If we don’t get some answers you’re gonna get tossed off your own team. :confuse:

Now, did you use the Jipst Method, because it sounds like you thought the price was fair and you didn't have to wrestle the poor salesman down to the ground?

Guess it's time for the ole Jip to retire, as I really didn't go 100% by the book... the book of Jipster that is. Negotiations were about an hour. I tell general manager I could only make an insulting offer, as I had not researched the Veracruz as thourougholy as I normally would a vehicle, and didn't want to overpay. General manager says, "nahh, go ahead... I can take it". I make what I think is a low offer. GM says, "yeah, that is insulting." Well dambit I told you! I offer to leave and come back tomorrow. I raise the issue of mileage, the suv being a year old, and the horrible economy.GM raises the price on our trade in a grand, met me in the middle from previous offer another 2 grand roughly.

Wife and I stew it over for awhile, take another look, call a few friends for input... made one final "Jipst"counter offer ($200 less), GM says he's all in. Its 10:00pm, something crazy. Never wanted to be a customer that causes saleman, GM, and finance guy to have to stay over. I say throw in a couple diet pepsi's and you got a deal. Deal is written up... home late.

The finance guy was nice. Tried to sell me extended warranty CNA or something. $1,200 "at cost" would extend bumper to bumper to 10 years. Sounds real good, but I've read a million times don't buy third party warranties. I mention this to him, and he doesnt respond. He says company won't go bankrupt. I say I've known several that has. He says nothing. Warranty through Hyundais third party company would be $1,800.

OK Mike, I was thinking about another golden rule for buying cars. One is, to change brands if possible, dealers want converts.

But, the newest is buy out of town from a dealer you haven't bought from before. I think this has a few advantages. First, the dealer will be happy to make a sale he wouldn't normally make, so he won't expect to make as much on the sale. Second, the dealer isn't going to worry about you telling other customers in the neighborhood about the low price. And third, you may tell other people in your neighborhood to travel to this dealership because of the great prices.

My father bought a new car (Ford or Mercury) every two years and he seldom bought a car from the same dealer twice. He was a travelling salesman and he would shop for cars when he was on the road, and try to find a dealer that had to make his quota for the month.

I had a lengthy response for you jmonroe, but probably not appropriate. You know, I remember isell always saying, "Don't rain on someone else parade" after they had bought a car. i.e Don't tell them they got a bad deal. I have never done this in all the years I've been here... despite many mediocere deals I've read about. I think it's quite rude and borderline mean to do so. The proper thing to say is congrats! Enjoy the new ride! Maybe great deal if so inspired.

But, since I have promoted myself as King Jipster, I'll give you the numbers to check on... maybe I need to admit myself to a nursing home.

    MSRP:$28345
Added Features: Premium Package:$2,200 (inclused power tilt and slide sunroof, power tailgagte, auto dimmin mirror, heated front seat, windshied wiper deicer.
    carpeted floor mats:$125
    Bluetooth: $325
    First Aid Kit: $25
    Freight and HaNDLING :$795
    Total Price: $31,815

Car has 6,000 miles. 27k plus tax title and $99 doc fee. Got $5,500 trade in for 2004 Mazda MPV with 112k miles... clean.

Like I wrote in an earlier post, didnt follow my own guidelines. But wife wanted the car. She works hard, has a stressful job... deserves the car she wants. So, no probaly not a great deal by the standards I've set. Probably a "fair" deal is what the dealership would call it.

Anyhow, couldn't sleep last night. Still wound up over having spent 30 grand. The Ole Jip aint use to spending that kind of money. ;)

    Congratulations on the new car

Thanks. That Oxmoor Group is huge and buying up whatever they can get their hand on. Have really grown and goal is to become number one, or maybe it's top 10, Mazda dealership in country.

Is that the dealer who a couple years back was running sexually suggestive commercials that were cute but a little over-the-top for daytime radio

Not sure, but think that was Kia. Kia runs radio ads almost nonstop it seems.

Forgot to mention, did get dealership to go up $1,000 on trade in. Edmunds dealer trade-in on my 2004 Mazda MPV, with all options, is $4,200 in clean condition. Private party is $5,295. So getting $5,500 was pretty good as it effectively lowered the price of the Veracruz.

I was just going to write and say that I think because of the strong trade-in value they gave you, it was a good deal. That is why you always have to look at the difference.

Probably a "fair" deal is what the dealership would call it.

I think you did get a "fair" deal. I think they were a little on the high side with what they gave you for the trade. You didn't go shopping and it seems you didn't have the time to go from dealer to dealer to come up with the best price possible.

Your wife liked the car and you don't have the time to play the dealer game. I find in these cases the $1000 difference you may have saved by running yourself ragged isn't meaningful in the big scheme of things.

If you were buying a car for yourself you may have tried harder to get a bigger reduction. I think your wife wanted and probably needed a new car, you got it, and it really won't mean a thing going forward. Your wife will enjoy and get lots of use out of the car, and it is a lot of car for the price no matter how you look at it.

Like a wise man once said, "the only difference, is the difference..."

and don't discount the wife wanting it factor. I know when we finally go in to purchase my wife's new wheels (which she is getting desperate for!)if they have exactly what she wants sitting there, ready to go, and I try to get up and leave because I think there might be a few hundred left on the table, there will be hell to pay (directed at me!).

Because once they take mental ownership ("someone else might buy MY car") you are screwed.

Yeah, in relooking at the trade-in credit, I'd say it's probably about $2,000 over what a dealership would pay to get our minivan at auction. Good deal... borderline great. The Jips still got it... right? ;)

OK Mike, I was thinking about another golden rule for buying cars. One is, to change brands if possible, dealers want converts

*driver, I would not consider buying out of town or changing brands/makes a "golden rule of car buying," but if it works for you, then you should follow your instincts.

Many manufacturers have been offering "CONQUEST" money in the past year or so, so changing brands may pay off in the short run. But, if you are happy with the brand you are driving, it would not make much sense to change to something else - unless of course you found something "better", as did I with the GS350.

Buying out of town can certainly be a hassle. You are much more likely to get a great deal from the guy down the road. As an example of what you might say:

"...Hi, you know something Mr. Salesman, I was in West Brunswick yesterday and almost bought one of your models from him - his pricing was unbelievable. But then I got to thinking, why not give the dealer in town a shot at selling me my new car. So, Mr. Salesman, HERE I AM!!!"

Now, you've set this salesman and dealership up for the KILL! I am going to assume you know what your trade is worth and what you want to pay for the new car - now all you have to do is get him to give you those numbers.

Secondly, developing a relationship with your dealership is very important to continued satisfaction/happiness with your new car, especially for service. If you purchase out of town, you don't get to develop that same relationship.

Just some feedback for you, *driver, regarding your "Golden Rules".

Yeah, I definitely got that vibe from my wife. I could tell she really liked the car. Well, she said so... and body language.

I thought a couple of times of getting up to walk, thought too there may be a couple hundred left. But, every time I would get to the point of starting to stand, wife would dig in her chair, comment about how it was a good deal, no one else will give us that kind of money for our minivan etc . Maybe there was money on the table, maybe there wasn't. We're happy with the deal.

I guess one good thing in buying a car with 6,000 miles on it, if it's gonna be a squeakier or rattlier, it probably would have already shown itself. I test drove a Chrsyler Town and Country with my brother a month or so ago. It was a $32k van with a very irritating rattle coming from the sliding door.

those are nice vehicles. If I needed a FS suv with a 3rd row, I would seriously consider it.

I know a guy that works for Hyundai (he brought over a 2013 Santa Fe to show me yesterday, a seriously nice unit), and he sometimes had a Cruz for his company car. I rode in it a few times, and it was very nice. He relaly liked it too.

I caught heck something terrible in here about 6 years ago when I purchased my G35. Told my story, price paid, and said that at that exact moment, the most important thing to me was getting out of the dealership in under an hour. I told my (very nice) saleslady that I would pay $X if she could make that happen - I had a rental car, and I needed to return it and then get somewhere in time to pick up my then 11-year-old son. Can't leave them stranded, you know.

Anyway, someone told me that I had FAILED as a host, and that I shouldn't even be working here if I didn't get a better deal than I did. Seriously. Nevermind that I loved the car, thought the price was close to right, and enjoyed the very brief sales process. It wasn't about what was important to me, I guess.

Jip, may you & Mrs. Jip enjoy many happy years and trips. Congrats!

I guess those hoarders are on to something...

Speaking of hoarders (or horders, whatever), I try not to watch those reality shows about people stacking old newspapers for 50 years in their homes or 10,000 linear feet of rubber bands because they disgust me! I catch an episode or two each month of "AMERICAN PICKERS" where you get a glimpse of these hoarders on farms with 15-20 out-structures and the cobwebs and vermin nests they have to pick through to find their caches of keepsakes.

Yes, I guess it can pay to hoard things. We have a set of German Crustal that my great, great grandmother received as a wedding gift back in 1845 while they were living in Washington DC. I guess those pieces are worth quite a bit, but there is no way I'm running down to "Antique Roadshow" to find out how much. But if I still owned that 1967 Stingray fastback coupe with that 427 ci engine rated at 435 hp, I think I'd make an effort to sell it. It had a 4-speed Muncie and a spring loaded clutch - no a/c and no power steerin - just pure, raw power.

    Ahhhhhhhh, if I only knew.......!!!!!!!

uhhh, it's one of those deals where I have to do 3,750 mile oil changes... emissions cleaning and every service that the particular dealership recommends. Haven't looked too close at it yet, but it looks expensive to keep my vehicle eligible. I always change my oil every 3-4k miles anyhow, but all the wiper blade changes may be too much. :confuse:

HAD NO IDEA I WAS GOING TO BUY A CAR

Sometimes, you wind up doing something that you could not believe you would do. It all has to do with the circumstances and opportunities that present themselves at a time and in a manner that was unexpected. I remember selling a car to an elderly gentleman that was quite accidental.

Back when I was selling cars in this luxury dealership, the general manager always gave me a "newbie" (brand new sales associate) to take under my wing and teach him/her the process of selling a car and the paperwork involved. The dealership used to have new cars inside a shopping center and would assign sales personnel there to answer questions and show them the vehicle. We were then allowed to hand the shoppers a business card. One evening, I was assigned to a spot inside the mall with a new sales associate. We were assigned to the flagship sedan which MSRP'd at about $68,000. I might add that the mall was located in a very wealthy part of Palm Beach County.

After the two of us had handed out tons of brochures and business cards, about 20 minutes before the mall closed, an elderly gentleman approached me, asked for a brochure, and wanted to sit in the sedan, which had just undergone a total redesign this particular year. This man asked scores of questions, wanted to know how everything worked, and was super impressed this this car. We were not permitted to talk price or actually sell a car there, but we were allowed to make appointments. Just before this man was about to leave, my cell phone rang. It was the dealership asking me to drive the mall car back to the dealership that night and bring up a new model the following morning.

I had the "newbie" get a security guard to open the sliding glass doors wide so I could get the car outside. I thanked the gentleman for stopping over and proceeded to get into the car to drive it off the mall floor. This man asks me if he could see the car outside after I drove it through the doors, so I said it would have to be quick as I had to get back to the dealership. I met him outside, and he saw the dashboard and interior with the lights on, loved the rear seat controls for a/c, audio, poer adjusting rear seats, etc., and asked me if the car had been sold. I said I did not know, but that I had been asked to take it back to the dealership. He got very red in the face, and then said to me, "...I'll give you $68000.00 cash for this car right now, and he would follow me to the dealership. I said, "...SOLD!"

I called the dealership to make sure they stayed open and made sure the car was available for sale - and the car was available. When we got to the dealership we finished the paperwork and just before he left, he said, "...I CAN'T BELIEVE I BOUGHT A CAR TONIGHT! I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT BUYING A CAR TODAY!

And I thought the car business was boring and uneventful. Not after that night!

Does that mean you violated FL law by selling a car off the premises of the dealership? I think it would be that in Ohio. Why? Because a local school group made arrangements with a nearby dealer to display a car at football games and the group was selling raffle tickets for the car or for cash, clearly explained in the rules displayed. Someone in the district told them they couldn't have a car off the dealer premises because they were selling it and that was illegal in Ohio. Oddly one of the people in the school district owned a dealership in another area--could there have been a personal interest in the group not being able to raffle off a car--which they would purchase at the store for the winner if enough tickets were sold.

I guess I took it the wrong way big dawg! I told everyone I was a bit edgy after spending all that dough... need a few days to decompress I suppose.

Yes, you read me all wrong but I know what you mean about being edgy when you're spending a big chunk of change on a car. I lost $3k on a car that should have been repaired under warranty then I punched myself in the chops by getting Mrs. j a new Subie to replace her broken XG350. AND, if that weren’t bad enough, we were having a bathroom redo at the same time. TELL ME ABOUT IT.

FWIW, I’m posting from home so it looks like Edmunds fixed their machine.

. . . if there was another program that would deserve an American version, it would be Wheeler Dealer.

Sadly, I think a new show on Discovery, Fast N' Loud, is supposed to be just that. Cheap cars rebuilt & resold applies to both shows, but the American version is, well, ah the hell with it. I'll just piss off even more people. Judge for yourself.

The oldest Wheeler Dealers are the best & Fast N' Loud is the absolute worst. I'll leave it at that.

Dealerships often have cars with miles on them that have not been titled. Sometimes they're explained as various types of executive use cars or demonstrators and others.

How does one place a value on the miles on the car.

I think simply reverse the situation: if someone owned the car and were bringing it in to the dealer to see it to the dealer, how would the dealer devalue the car because of the miles?

I once won a car that was new owned by the dealer but with thousands of miles on it. I considered trying to sell it without taking ownership and putting it into my name. I decided to title it and use it for a few months, but that has always made me wonder just how to value the loss due to the mileage on the new vehicle.

    What say you?

    I SAID, "SOLD"!

No, it was legal because it was outdoors, not inside the mall. It was the mall that imposed rules on us, not the state. But if it was illegal on the county, I never knew about it. Besides, the actual sale took place at the dealership.

What amazed me about this story is that the man had gone to the shopping mall to buy some clothes at Nordstrom's, and luckily I was just a few hundre feet down the mall corridor from Nordstrom's. I was just in the right place at the right time. And then to get full sticker on the car WIYH no back and forth negotiations! The car was bringing full sticker because this was one of very few Ultra's available at the time. Even the doors closed by themselves. Beautiful car!

    What say you?

The only times we had brand new cars on the lot with several thousand miles on them and had not been previously titled was when we had to "unwind" a deal. As an example, if a customer leased a car from us and 3 weeks later, after trying to get the lease bought, we were unable to consummate the lease, we had to take the car back. Same thing if the car was sold and the customer applied for a loan with the manufacturer's finance arm, but was not approved, we had to go "shop" the loan. It can take a month to get a marginal buyer a loan, but sometimes no bank would buy the loan. Then, we had to unwind the deal. The car remained untitled.

We never used demo cars - customers would drive a new car of their choice and hopefully would buy it. So, half our new car inventory had 15-25 miles on the odometer. If the owner of the dealership or his wife changed cars, sometimes the would have 4-5 thousand miles on them. The drove the cars using dealer plates.

As far as your question goes, we would sell those cars for 1-2 thousand under invoice.

2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited was the worst...

I read their review of the Wrangler TJ before I bought mine; it sounded like vehicular purgatory. When I bought my Wrangler(I pay little to no attention to CR auto or audio electronic reviews) I found it to be a very pleasant drive.
Did it handle like a BMW? What do you think?
Did it have Lexus-like NVH levels? Are you kidding?

    IT'S A WRANGLER FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!

Criticizing a Jeep for its inherent Jeep-ness is like blackballing a 911 because it has a cramped rear seat and limited luggage space.
    Morons.
