You drove your 4 cyl Ion solo to your reunion. Does that thing weigh 2600 lbs?
I drove a 4000 something pound 4WD Honda Pilot through mountains, loaded with my family of 5, our luggage for a 10 day trip, and a Thule roof bag strapped to the roof.

Something like that .. maybe 2700. I had two sets of golf clubs and my luggage.
I wasn't comparing my MPG to yours - of course you're gonna get a lower number with more passengers and luggage, plus the roof bag. My ION is rated for 32 highway, so my mileage wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. My best tank was just over 33 MPG, and my worst was 26.8, but that included the running around town that I did once I got to CA.
I will, however, contend with your comments about "mountains" - I had to cross the Continental Divide as well as the Vail Pass - both of them over 10,000 feet above sea level. Plus a number of smaller passes along the route as well.
Isn't the highest point east of the Mississippi Mt. Washington in NH? At something like 6,000 ft? Geez, the town I live in here in CO is officially marked at 6202.
:P
PS - when I traveled for business, I frequently hit the east coast and would take trips in the evening to visit friends and family. Went from Baltimore to Southern NJ one night, and did a road trip from Boston to ME and back as well.
Mt Mitchell in NC... 6684 ft. Yankees have poisoned you with Mt Washington.
It was probably to accomplish the same thing as eating a chicken sandwich at a local restaurant just because the owner of a food chain stated a belief. Six weeks (maybe six days) from now, none of it will make much sense or even be remembered.
"...our children should have contact/experiences in their world with wholesome role models rather than the fringes of our society..."
With nearly 25% of our population proported to be gay, I wouldn't say that they are exactly "the fringes of our society". Thank goodness not all gay people are into public exhibitionism. As a teacher and administrator for over 40 years, i have known many gay people who were excellent role models for children. I think that most gay people act professionally on the job, and live quiet, productive lives like the rest of us. What is it that they say? One rotten apple can spoil....

Boy you must be old:
secretary = administrative assistant

Compare the paultry number of people trying to push their beliefs onto others, unlike what Mr. Cathy did, by their public display of affection to the thousands who stood in line on Wednesday. It's all political and the media and others love talking about these things rather than talking about how horrible the economy has been for 3 years and how bad the recession still is. The number of people working is lower, despite trying to interpret numbers to mean that jobs are being created in a positive sense. The number of people on SSI increases with people who aren't really disabled getting it by using attorneys who know the ropes to pull and that's draining more of the public funding for Social Security along with the 2% reduction in withholding for this calendar year. And the media loves talking about Chick Fil A instead?
Interest rates have been artificially held down by the government actions reducing incomes for many older folks invested in CDs and other fixed investments. And the media makes a big play about Chick Fil A and Mr. Cathy. Gimmeabreak.
I was gonna stop on my way back from a large area car show Friday evening,b ut decided not to stop in case one of the 4 people shown on the noon TV news was still hanging about the Chick Fil A closest. I didn't want to give them audience. I don't spend time in Chick Fil A kissing my wife while we're there to push my choices onto them, all 4 of them.
I'll stop today, Saturday to buy food. Maybe on my way to one of 15 cruise-ins in the large region I would travel for a good one--why do they all have to be on the same day? That means people won't attend any of them in great numbers to show their cars because they will have to choose among the many choices.

6289 feet but it's a tough 6289 feet - solid granite straight up.
Hiking in the Whites is difficult. I just tried to summit Washington at the end of June. The Appalachian Mountain Club has huts along the Appalachian Trail. We planned on hiking from Mizpah to Lakes of the Clouds on our way to Washington. Our plan was to bag a couple of 4K footers. It's about 5 miles and an elevation gain of 1700'. We bagged Mt. Pierce but turned back before reaching Eisenhower as the 70 mile per hour gusts and rain from the clouds we were in just wasn't safe. Most of the trip was above tree line so those weather conditions create bad news.
BTW the only hikers that made it through that day were two guys through hiking the AT. The night before they gave a little dog and pony to us paying guests of the hut. The agreed the Whites are the toughest part of the hike other than PA. There the trail is jagged rocks and they spent their entire time walking with their heads down to avoid a broken ankle.
Certainly understandable, given that you provide 10 - 20% of the volume.
If you can take a leisurely drive on a paved highway to the top of the summit, it's a wimpy mountain!!
:P
So are you saying it's OK if my wife and I make out in public because that's wholesome??
Only in America would a "protest" of support involve spending money on fast food.

Otherwise, l like the car. My mother-in-law purchased 2010 Focus SE loaded and likes it except for the road noise. Dealer told us it is the tires. Car is likable otherwise, good gas mileage, and comfort. Just road noisey. Thought it was bearings, but - no- says the Hankook tires is an issue. Consumer reports does not report on the tire. But then, where do you find a 12,000 mile tire? Years ago re-treads promised more than that.
That reminds me of when I was promoted to personnel director for the school system. I was assigned a secretary from the pool. Her first words to me were, "I don't bring coffee; I don't take dictation; and I don't lie to your wife about where you are." My response: "I never drink coffee; I prefer to write my own memos and letters; and my wife trusts me better than to ever ask you where I am." From that point on, we got along famously. For 12 years we worked shoulder to shoulder during many 12 to 14 hours days. She was always professional and very hard working. Unlike many secretaries, she also knew how to keep her mouth shut. That alone is a major plus in personnel.

I think you missed a decimal point there. I don't think that even in San Francisco a quarter of the people are gay.
I don't like talking politics in here but I have much less of a problem with the CEO or gays speaking their minds than I do with gutless politicians threatening to impose illegal economic sanctions on ANY business because of the beliefs of the owner. The fact that the gay community didn't distance themselves from those hateful actions is a shame on them.
Imagine if a Republican mayor threatened to put gay rights supporter Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream out of business for their beliefs. The sky would fall and rightfully so.

Great comment, *oldfarmer. And remember, the President's right hand man now occupies the mayor's office at Chicago's City Hall (Emanuel). And he doesn't believe in the freedoms set forth in the Bill of Rights unless they work to his advantage. CFA isn't welcome in Chicago, but who would move to Chicago with all the gangs and homicides there. His city is a war zone!
I lived in Chicago and suburbs for 23 years when it was a nice place to visit and live in. Now, you take your life in your hands of you go downtown! CFA would be smart to stay out of Chicago with that mayor and those homicides. I sure will!

OK - I thought you meant some sort of mileage number like 12,000.
...the numbers may not be fully comparable between the brands, but give a decent enough indication of tread life.
Not comparable at all across brands. Each brand submits a base tire to compare all their others against it. I never quite understood that.
The problem is freedom of speech. The media, the worst enemies of freedom of speech, happily quelch speech they don't like under the ruse of political correctness. It's okay for the LGBT groups to say anything and everything about hate on the part of the Baptist Cathy, but they insist on not having their behaviors analyzed. The press sets the tone for what's allowable.
I see the same slant in most of the press in their treatment of GM vehicles and ascribing historical characterists to them compared to how they treat recalls, etc., of their chosen popular brands. Or another example is the treatment of the presidential candidate's trip to Europe compared to the previous 2008 candidate's European trip. The media is no longer journalists but rather activists, political and social.

That's about 5 hours from me.
Guess it's closest to me by quite a bit....usually 2 and a half hours except it took an extra hour to cross the border. We didn't make it to Olean this time, but this is a gorgeous area....lots of green, lots of fields, trees, valleys.
I even avoided a speeding ticket with my new don't speed policy. I was headed North and a black pick up truck passed me and then a Chrysler Dodge Caravan. I could see the Caravan guy was impatient and he passed the black pickup truck. Then a police car went by going South in the opposite direction. He put on his lights, went onto the shoulder, did a U[turn and went by me and the pickup and stopped the van. I think the van was going at a fair clip because he had just passed the pickup.
My new policy is really paying off.....before my ticket that could have been me.

As for the gutless politicians, I couldn't agree more. They have no business imposing any kind of sanctions on a person or group because they state a belief. While I can certainly see the necessity for a certain amount of government regulation, I do feel that Washington has now stepped into so many areas that are truly none of their business.
Richard
It changed while I was still in the buisness. I refused to use taxpayer's money to have a painter change my title on the office door, or change my business cards. Regardless of the title, the job and all that it entailed never changed.
These people who sit around and change titles need a real job. They are the same people who wrtie mission statements, annual goals, and devise papers from think tanks.

So true. I can remember when newsmen like Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, and Edward R. Murrow reported what happened---not what they wanted to happen or didn't want to happen. Analysis was left to the editors, and they made it quite clear that it was an editorial opinion.
Richard
Mr. Cathy spends approximately $5 million out of CFA's annual revenue to support causes that do push his beliefs on others.
Did seatzb get his problem solved. If he only get 16000 miles out of his tires on a Ford Focus it makes me think maybe he is really Ken Block in disguise.

I just had to chuckle at the use of words like secretary, personnel, et al. They are phrases from another time - that's all. No disrespect was meant.
My son gives me all kinds of grief for things I say about the 80's - the time I started my career in. And trust me, I have to be very careful about the "old" words I use lest I be labelled ancient and not able to adapt to today's working environment. And I'm not even 50.
I don’t think ’rob2’ meant it as a disrespectful comment.
In any case us

Well, I guess I over-reacted to your comments. My apologies. When you live in a world where age discrimination is rampant, one tends to get "ouchy" when comments, even in jest, are made. I am 67, which in lifespan years, is still not that old. Now my dad, on the other hand, IS OLD! He'll be 90 in October.
I've made comments about age in jest too! Like, "...the average age in my community is deceased!"
I guess it was the context of your posts that got to me like you were taking us to task for using archaic English.
Thanks for clearing that up for me!
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger
I worry about that as well. I'm not yet 50. We middle aged folks (that's what they call us) have to fight it in the workplace. Experience and accomplishments often don't matter anymore. We can be viewed as archaic.
That's why I keep up with the happenings in my industry, social media, current nomenclature, et al. You have to be viewed as young to be given the chance.
I am glad everyone cleared up your comment....I know exactly what you meant, I guess because I sometimes make comments that get misinterpreted from time to time....as some may remember, or hopefully forgot, especially the older ones!!!! (just joking)
Humor can be a double edge sword, it is always risky, if it works it is great, if it doesn't it can backfire....I give credit to people who can pull it off and especially to people who will give it a try.
I sure wouldn't want to be in the workplace today, and being middle age makes it even harder. Things are changing so rapidly, the learning curve must be enormous, and keeping ahead of the getting canned curve must be really difficult too. Also, you are competing with young people who know the latest most up to date technology. And business has changed to, maximum profit to satisfy the shareholders and so the current management team can keep their jobs for another quarter.
I thought I would want to work forever, but, not any more...retirement has its advantages.

You’re right 67 ain’t nothin. When I was 67 I was still at my fighting weight. Hate to say it but at the end of July I had one of those mile marker birthdays. (had to keep this a little car related)
Mrs. j threw a surprise cookout party for me at my brothers and had the family members and grand kids do skits about me. A real roast format.
Pay back will be in a couple weeks when she hits the same mile marker.

I can give you the other side of age discrimination. We had in our engineering office a 70+ year old gentleman (draftsman), who was first office employee hired nearly 20 years ago. Very capable man, his early work was just unparalleled, he taught me a few things when I was hired 12 years ago.
However, at some point with the age caught up with him and his health started deteriorating quite rapidly. Overstrained, overmedicated, unwiling to change his old habits, he became a major ballast. Nobody wanted to give him any work, afraid it would have to be redone, but he acted like world and office owed him lifetime appointment. He was pushing himself because he had poor grasp of expense control in his life (to put it mildly) and at the end the job "killed" him. He died year ago or so. Unfortunately, because last couple of years of his employment were so bad (the man was a shadow of himself, but refused to leave on his own and bosses were too weak to tell him not to come - they probably would eventually, but it was coming way too long for the rest of us), instead of sadness of a loss of a great man, first thing I felt was a relief - and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. What was worse, in last three months, I was really afraid he might have dropped at the office - I'm not kidding.
I was kind of joking (but not really) that those couple of years made me understand medieval princes who would kill their fathers refusing to relinquish the crown. The old man still thinks he is fine, but the kingdom is on fire...
When can you say an old man that his contribution no longer justifies his employment if he thinks he is OK and he wants to work? At what point it is not "age discrimination", but rational business practice? Is there a point for that? Is it ever a chance one is not a [non-permissible content removed] just for saying "you sir, enjoy your retirement, we trully appreciate your contribution, but the business has to go on without you".
2018 430i Gran Coupe
There is no question that there is a point when a decision must be made regarding an older employee whose faculties are failing as to either "forcing" retirement or "arm-twisting" the employee to retire. Not only for the sake of the business and productivity, but also for the morale of the other employees who always seem to be mopping up after that individual.
In the teaching business, when I was a principal and then headmaster of a private school, we had teachers who were in their early 60's or late 50's who were showing signs of early dimentia. If I had tried many times to get that employee(s) to retire early or resign or take a central office job without success, I had to actually spend untold hours in that classroom documenting the affects that teacher had on the children. And don't think the Teacher's Union was there to protect her from day one!
Yes, it happens to all of us, sooner or later, and at least I knew that physically I could no longer work 60 or 70 hours a week on my feet. That's why I do some consulting now rather than the leg work in a dealership.
Is it ever a chance one is not a [non-permissible content removed] just for saying "you sir, enjoy your retirement, we trully appreciate your contribution, but the business has to go on without you".
Of course there is a point at which you are not a "[non-permissible content removed]" - and that point is when it is negatively affecting workers and/or the business as a whole - or children as I delineated above - when you must document what affects that individual has on his colleagues and the business.

As the regulars know I’m doing consulting work for my old employer and so far I’m having a good time. I was asked to come back again; this has happened several times since I did the retirement thing but this will be the last time. I refused a couple of times because of the politics that I knew existed. Finally, I was told I wouldn’t have to be involved with that, so I relented and came back. I got lucky; to my management’s credit things have been great. I can pretty much do what they wanted me to do and they will do the politics thing.
Three weeks ago a manager I knew from when I was a regular decided to throw his weight around about an issue that would involve the department that I am in. This guy is the manager of a different department and I knew him when I was a regular. He was an a-hole then and still is. Because I would be the one where the work would fall I voiced my opinion that it wasn’t the responsibility of the group I was in but rather it was his departments work to do. He didn’t like that and he convenes a meeting with the higher ups and I was there too. I explained the situation and I have the full support of my boss (up the chain a good bit himself). The manager of both departments is kind of surprised by the thought that the work belonged to someone other than this manager. To save the face of the nut that started all of this, this overall manager says, “let me think about this and I’ll get back to everyone about it”.
The meeting breaks up and as we are leaving, the guy that started this whole show asks me to step aside and says, “I don’t know how you did it when you agreed to come back here but it looks like you can get away with murder”. I said, “you know that isn’t true but if I could, you’d be the first one I’d whack”. He walked off in a huff.
In case anyone is interested, upper management found in favor of the department I work in.

LOL at that one. That guy sounds like he thinks he needs a serious putting in his place. You are in the enviable position of working because you want to, not because you have to.
In the case of dino, with the old guy who isn't pulling his weight, I would say most companies have ways to get rid of non-productive staff if they really want to. It might take a few interviews and it might take some documentation. For the guy to last that long with that kind of work ability, he might be related to the boss....in which case don't make waves....or you will pay the price.
