That front end looks nothing like my current car. The whole front end is brand new. I saw a photo of the sedan at the dealership, and it has completely different side view - rear quarter panels are different as are the rear lighting array.
The interior look is also completely different. Nice looking front end, that's for sure!

Yes, I go there for free hand car washes once a week or so. I had no idea that they were introducing the new design so early - May/June.
But you can see why I was interested by looking at that new front end - great looking vehicle!

Once a week! You're in Florida - how dirty could the car get?
I'd show you a picture of my car but it's nothing but a bid salt stain right now. I might wash it this weekend.
That's the whole idea. It isn't free when they make you buy a new car every year!

Good luck with that one....sounds good in theory but it never seems to work in real life.
I have labelled cords A and the place it goes into A, B, B and so on. That doesn't work either.

Mike, go on google, look up 2014 Mercedes e class and you will see lots of pictures of front ends, rear ends, haunches etc. I don't think they have a 4 door version ready yet but it will come.
I am thinking they will offer two grills like they do in the C Class, the traditional for the classic model and the more open one for the sport model. With the C Class, the sports grill model doesn't have the emblem on the hood, just the classic one does.
I think you see more difference in the models than I do, because you want it to be different. They will make it different to get those customers who need an excuse to buy. Nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with buying it if you want to. I am thinking changes in technology are happening so fast, it is probably better to wait at least 2 years before buying, otherwise you will be buying every year just to have all the latest technology.
Something about changing a few lines and equipment makes us feel what we got isn't the latest and greatest. There is an art to enjoying what you do have and not wanting something just because it is new, different, a little better etc.
Those are strictly my views on a model spruce up. You are an intelligent guy and old enough to decide what you would like so I am not trying to influence you...just stating the way I would see it. Geez, I have had my car for almost 14 months, I wouldn't buy a 2013, not different enough....I could probably get a 2014 but it would have to be radically superior to the 2012, I find I like the 535 about as much as I could like a car.

You are correct about the sport vs. the luxury models - sport has totally different front end and no "star" hood ornament while the luxury has the ornament and a face lifted front end. I have a copy of the ordering specs with pricing in my possession. I do know they have gone to the ECO stop/start engine for improved fuel economy in the city. The interior will be somewhat similar to the CLS550 with new gauges, ambient lighting, higher quality leather, and an analog clock in the center like the CL550.
The packages have changed substantially. The interior wood selections are more generous and higher quality. It is more than a facelift - it is a substantial refresh of the current styling and technology.
I have not bought the car - I am interested to see what it will look like when it gets here in 3 or 4 months. I love the car I have and it will take some doing to get me to buy a 2014.

1. About 11,000 deaths from firearms in 2011.
2. About 35,000 deaths from auto accidents in 2011.
3. About 40,000 medical mistakes happened each day in 2011.
4. Close to 200,000 deaths due to medical mistakes in 2011.

Okay! If I win my medical malpractice lawsuit, I'll probably buy an Audi R8 with the proceeds.
Some here might think being given the flu by a flu shot is only worth a new S4, which if fine also, and others might think the case is un-winnable. :P
Getting back to cars, I'm very very happy with my last two car purchases, particularly the latest, a 2006 Audi A3 2.0T DSG. I got a super bargain value back in 2006, and the same car today would cost me about 15% more, and I think would still be a great value.
The 2003 Honda Accord LX V6 Coupe wasn't perfect like a Honda should be, but it was good enough; I was happy enough with it, especially its resale value, which made getting the Audi easy.
While you won't see me cutting a check to Rite Aid anytime soon, I wouldn't hesitate to write one towards Honda or Audi again. Honda does need to make something with some MOJO though. They are comatose lately.
As to german cars costing a lot to keep running after the 50K warranty; not in my experience. (95.5K miles and counting...).
Sorry, couldn't resist.

*jmonroe, I couldn't sell you a V8 cocktail, let alone a bridge in Brooklyn. You're much too savvy to be duped by me. As for a new 2014 Mercedes Benz E Class sedan, it might be a great looking car, but I am more than satisfied with what I have.
But I do appreciate that you trust me not to buy a new car - it's soooooooo refreshing!
Better we expend energy on our ability to see what the future will bring as regards Andres's malpractice suit against Keiser HMO. What are your thoughts on this magnificent event? My take on it (and I will not comment directly to him) is that he will lose the suit because in order to collect any money, one has to prove that the patient suffered damages as a result of the malpractice. Proving that will be difficult. Secondly, finding a lawyer who would take the case with almost no chance of winning is slim to none. Also, even if he somehow is able to prove he was injured as as result of malpractice, what damages would he be awarded? No enough to entice an ambulance chaser to take the case on a contingency basis.
Any thoughts?

So I am still getting over the flu but it is a different strain from the one I got vaccinated from. Underneath it all I'm thrilled my immune system is up to the task of fighting it off.
Now I almost got caught with a medical mistake when I was in the hospital the second time. The nurse checked my blood sugar and then forgot the number or more specifically remembered a higher number. She would have hit me with too much short acting insulin. Could have been a nice lawsuit but I wouldn't be around to collect it. High blood system will kill you slowly. Low will do you in right quick.
Meanwhile, a Mercedes with no hood ornament? Heresy! Heck when I had my $200 54 Mercedes 300B it even had a wooden dash. Not inserts - carved out of a big block of wood.
I have just contracted the flu myself - fever, congestion, aches, pain, stuffed nose, coughing, etc. Doctor said I probably got the strain that was not in the flu shot I got in October. Wonderful - I just hope I don't contract pneumonia like last year. I'm very susceptible to viral pneumonia for some reason
It is good to know your immune system is strong enough to fight this flu. Mine is not, unfortunately.
As for no star hood ornament, I agree - only the luxury will have the star - not the sport model. The differences between the 2014 luxury and sport model is distinct and significant. The first time they've done that. Totally different front ends and rear ends. Very surprising.
Feel better, my friend, you've been through enough!

I've always heard cold weather can hurt mpg... didn't realize to that extent.
Mandatory flu shots is a crock of you know what. Despite all the press about how great getting the flu shot is, I've never seen any local studies showing it to be beneficial. There are millions of strains of viruses in the world, major strains still being a small percentage. Anytime you inject a forwien body into your blood stream, there are going to be risks.
People pressured into going into work when they are sick, not washing hands, not covering your piehole when sneezing or coughing... this is where the vast majority of contagious disease is passed.

The winter blended gas will drop performance as well as mileage but not to that extent.
As far as flu shots go, I've never had the flu and the one time I was talked into a shot I felt like crap the next day.
However, I volunteer two days a week at our local Food Bank and I'm face to face with a lot of homeless people who are often sick. I hear this year is susposted to be really bad for the flu so I'm reconsidering.
Anyone have any strong opinions....oh no, that never happens here!
Earlier this year my doctor talked me into taking a pneumonia vaccine shot. If I don't get better soon, I will join andres on his malpractice suit.

I have had a couple bouts with flu before shots were regularly available. Week out of work and shaky first few days back at work ( I usually reasonably tough guy and work through illness). The mild symptoms the shot may cause are much better then the results of not having shot and getting the flu. ( 18 deaths reported in Massachusetts already this season and its just beginning) I have also heard there is a pretty nasty strain going around this year ( about 10% of cases) that is not covered with current shots (but shot would lessen its affect from my understanding)
that much drop on the highway sounds like a lot. Check the tire pressure (that does drop in the cold). fuel blend hurts. Warming up more of course.
maybe you are running the defroster now so AC is on?

Mass. Dept. of Health said flu vaccine was 91percent effective
BOSTON —The day after announcing four Boston residents have died of the flu and more than 700 other people have the virus, the city has declared a state of emergency.
With the declaration, health care centers across the city will be offering free vaccines to anyone who hasn’t yet been immunized.

The dealer told me they are ordering them now for expected delivery in May. That's about 4 months earlier than usual for Mercedes model year inventory build-up.
As for not waiting until 2015, I will wait that long or longer if this model change is going to be followed by more changes in 2015. Personally, I have never seen Mercedes make such major refresh changes to an E Class model 4 or 5 years into its lifespan. Major interior design changes, equipment and options upgrades and sheet metal changes in the front, sides and rear are rare unless it's a major revamp.
We'll have to see when the car arrives in may.

I’ve never heard of a drop like that. Like I’ve said before, I never bought a car and gave consideration to mileage but what little I do see with the Genny is that it could be down a mile or 2 at most. That doesn’t bother me because that’s not why I bought the V8. However, for every minus there is a plus, at least with the performance of the Genny there is.
I think I’ve mentioned this before.
My ’09 Genny V8 is rated at 368 HP with regular gas and 375 HP with premium. OK, just for the fun of it right after I got the car (March ’09) I must have alternated 10 times at least between regular and premium. What did I see with performance? Not a thing. Not surprising since it would take a dynamometer to detect that difference which is how Hyundai had to come up with those specs.
Fast forward to the first cold November morning in ‘09 (around freezing if I had to guess). As I’m starting to accelerate to get up to speed to get on the PA Turnpike, like I always do, the car really takes off. Far better pickup than what I felt before under the same conditions other than temperature. I scratch my head; figure that I know why this happened so I do another experiment. When traffic permitted I slowed down to about 40 MPH (same speed just before I accelerated getting onto the pike) and I stepped on it again. Again there was a big difference from how the car behaved in warmer months. I did this many times over the course of the next few days and it responded with equally better performance EVERY time without exception.
I’m pretty sure I proved that cold-air-inlet temperature trumps a little boost in octane. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a bonnafied track car but I almost hate to see the winter season end.

Unless you drive at least 20 miles at a time, or twice that, as a minimum, in really cold climates, winter weather will kick the dickens out of mileage.
It's not by accident that many cars "require" 20W oil, but even that takes time to get up to temperature.
The engines are designed for thinner oils to squeeze out a little extra economy. I remember running 20W/50 in my 79 Continental. That thick junk would probably destroy a modern engine.

Well... not 100%. But checked a round trip going into work a week or so ago and got about 38mpg highway. The other day, with warmer temps, got 47mpg (roundtrip).
Maybe I started cold weather mpg check from my house... which is about a mile from expressway. The other day mpg checked after merging onto expressway, still shouldn't be that big a gap though. I'll recheck again.
Luckily I've not been prone to getting the flu.. knock on wood. :P
The only time I recall getting flu like symptoms was on a couple of occasions I got a flu shot. This year, at the hospital I work at, it is mandatory to get the flu shot. I got the shot in Oct... no problems with that one.
That is exactly one of the laws of physics that I proved. Like I said in my post, I figured that was it but I had to prove it to myself, AGAIN.
Do you think if a trooper pulled me over he would have gone for that “experiment” thing? There were times when I was well over 80 (pike limit is 65) before I backed off.

hmmm, maybe 3 or 4 minutes when scraping the frost off the windshield. Otherwise everything about the same.
I know there are probably flu studies out there on how effective flu shots are. My question who is doing the study and who is paying for the study to be done? I'm guessing pharmacudical companies and hospitals.
I had a friend in my department who retired in 2003. She and her husband sold their home, stored the furniture, and bought a huge motor home the size of a regular tour bus (Blue Bird?). It was absolutely beautiful inside---living room, dining area, kitchen, big bedroom, etc. The dash board of the vehicle itself looked like the cockpit of a 747. They traveled the country for seven years---hooked up with snow bird clubs, etc. He drove; she didn't. They really enjoyed themselves, but gave it up in 2010. They purchased another home and built a nice building for the bus. When they have over night guests, the guests stay in the motor home---complete privacy for the guests and the home owners. The husband told me that it was a nice seven year investment and that he didn't regret their decision. Even though gas prices rose over the years, they weren't worried. They saved their money for years with this adventure in mind. In seven years of travel, they had one minor accident in a snow storm and a couple of break downs. All in all, it was a happy experience. They were both ex-military, so the travel plan was well suited to them. It isn't for all folks, but it is great for some.
Richard
hmmm, you may be onto something there stickguy. I believe I was running the defroster there quite a bit during that cold weather.
I recall now that someone wrote AC compressor comes on with defroster on? Which is to remove excess humidity in cabin?
Thanks all.
But isn't there a minimum temperature at which the AC compressor will be triggered ON by the computer? On my leSabres, it appears to be about 45 Deg. F. The freon in the system loses pressure as the temperatures of the tubes are colder and the system would be kept OFF by the low pressure protection which keeps it from running when there is too little freon gas in the system.
How cold was it that day in Louisville?--probaby a lot warmer than here in Dayton area.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Never thought I'd be one of those guys to pay more than a speck of attention to mpg. But, it is pretty exciting now that I have an instant mpg on my odometer screen, and can see in a glance my mpg... and how much money the ole jipster is saving.
The wife's Veracruz is getting about 19mpg on average. But, she has a lead foot, waits until the last second to apply the brakes, and generally makes me a nervous wreck on the few occasions I ride shotgun with her. When I drive the Veracruz I average about 21mpg.
Richard
I wonder if that's possible or not with modern systems. The oxygen sensor(s) measure the unburned oxygen in the tail gases and the computer adjusts the input of gasoline to keep that stoichiometrically at the right air to gasoline rate for maximum cleanliness of pollutants out the exhaust pipe to the converter. So there should be little variation in the richness of the mixture to the engine.
Unless with a cold engine measure in the coolant the computer block learns to give a little richer mixture for improved driveability. But that should end as the coolant temp (and cylinder walls) get up to 185-190, the normal run range for temperatures.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
You may be onto something too pinhead. It's about a 15 mile drive to where I work. Don't think I've had any trips over 15 miles since I've bought the car. Well, the 15 mile trip is a 30 mile trip when I pick up my son from school.
That is absolutely correct and that is why I have harped many times here that a car should be at least at operating temp, according to the temp gauge, before you demand too much from it.
With computers in cars today adjusting fuel, air, timing, etc. constantly, a car that is cold feels like it is running fine but until the oil is warm that is a critical concern. How many times have we heard, right here, that “oils are better today” and I’m not going to argue with that but there is another law of physics that says warm oil lubricates better than cold oil but I haven’t been able to convince a certain someone in here of that so I stopped trying. Now it’s your turn.
Years ago when cars had chokes you knew when it was cold but that has gone out the window today.
