How cold was it that day in Louisville?--

From what I recall, upper 20's. The compressor in the civic must be pretty smooth because I neither hear or feel it coming on.

Anyone have any strong opinions....oh no, that never happens here!

If you believe what most real doctors would say, after going to medical school for several years, they would say, it's a no brainer, why would you risk getting the flu, when you can get a simple vaccination.

The flu can be very unpleasant, weeks of sore aching muscles, headaches, no energy, coughing and sneezing etc. AND YOU CAN PASS IT ON TO OTHERS.

If you believe the naturalpaths (who have to have a contrarian point of view) or the conspiracy theorists, and think the flu shot is a way for the drug companies to make more money, than don't go with it.

Meanwhile, people are getting sick from flu and are dying, and that's for real.

Since you asked for strong opinions...........

I wonder if that's possible or not with modern systems. The oxygen sensor(s) measure the unburned oxygen in the tail gases and the computer adjusts the input of gasoline to keep that stoichiometrically at the right air to gasoline rate for maximum cleanliness of pollutants out the exhaust pipe to the converter.

I guess I’ll have to ask my Genny if it has an ignore mode feature for all those gizmos when it gets cold. :confuse:

Earlier this year my doctor talked me into taking a pneumonia vaccine shot.

You do have MILD symptoms of a flu-like illness. It is possible that that pneumonia vaccine lessened the symptoms. Don't be so quick to sue.

I'm back and so proud of myself. They called this morning to say that the tower was fixed---had some stupid virus. When I unplugged the 8 cords yesterday, I nearly made the same mistake that I did two years ago when I yanked on the monitor cord. The first 7 cords unplugged easily. Then I began pulling on the monitor cord and it wouldn't come loose. Suddenly, I stopped and thought about it. This is the one that you have to unscrew.

When I got home today, I pulled out my trusty chart to replug the cords. Driver, you're wrong. My chart worked perfectly and here's why. I did more than just draw the chart. Next to the chart, I described each plug in detail such as this: "Yellow cord with square plug and three little humps on the end attached to the thin yellow cord as opposed to a medium or thick cord. Plug yellow cord between the green and pink holes on the right side of the back panal." At any rate, all 8 cords went right into place. I was really excited. I shouted to my wife, "The cords are plugged in and it works!" Her reply, "Who did them for you?" :P

never seen Mercedes make such major refresh changes to an E Class model 4 or 5 years into its lifespan.

I get the impression 2014 is not a year for major changes to the 535 or A6, so I think they are all trying to refresh their images. From the pix I have seen, Mercedes has the most changes, but not a big year for anything much new.

    This is supposed to be a 2014 535, but I can't see much that is different (and the lights and the wheels I don't like as much as the 2012 - but, then, I am a grump);

work a week or so ago and got about 38mpg highway. The other day, with warmer temps, got 47mpg

I don't think that is out of line. My mileage can go down 10 to 20% in the winter. Seems to be more waiting at lights, wheels spinning, ploughing through snow (I found even wet roads ooffered more resistance on the trip to FL and mileage really fell off), air is denser so more wind reistance, plus all the technical data given by our experts around here.

When I was at Buttonwillow doing a track weekend at 100 degree temperatures, the original '06 A3 Intercooler was overwhelmed and I had no OOMPH. I felt like I was driving a 4-banger, which I was.

Fast forward to last year, same if not higher temps (topping out at 105) at Chuckwalla Raceway in the desert of CA, but now I have the much better and more efficient S3 Intercooler plopped in my A3.

It was worth every penny; made a huge difference, far more, than 100 octane even with a turbo motor.

You forgot the fever that gives you chills no amount of blankets can fix.

Also when the fever breaks one might break out in a sweat so bad the wife forces you to get up and change cloths and bedding (can occur multiple times while getting over it)

I know there are probably flu studies out there on how effective flu shots are. My question who is doing the study and who is paying for the study to be done?

There are studies done and the flu shot is extremely effective, especially this year because they nailed it pretty good.

Who pays for studies etc., well, if you are skeptical about everything or a conspiracy theorist then nothing will convince you the flu shot is a good thing.

I used to get the flu every year and with a really bad sore throat (I was flying and travelling alot) and I started to get the flu shots about 25 years ago. If I have had the flu since, I don't think I have, then I got a very mild type. And no sore throats. That's the other side of the story.

    >Colder air will generally produce a bit more power.

So there should be little variation in the richness of the mixture to the engine.

Unless with a cold engine measure in the coolant the computer block learns to give a little richer mixture for improved driveability. But that should end as the coolant temp (and cylinder walls) get up to 185-190, the normal run range for temperatures.

Congrats. Well deserved reward for you for getting the cables back right.

Sorry to hear about the virus on the computer. Did it have a flu shot this year to protect it against a virus? Question: what antivirus/antimaleware is running on it? Is that program being updated correctly? Is that program being run completely to its end regularly?

I had carefully installed a free antivirus that works on a friend's laptop. But 6 months later while visiting it was loaded with problems when it was mentioned a few hours before we were leaving Michigan. Turns out the computer was never left on long enough to hit the automatic update times and it was never left on to run the antivirus to its end to remove the bad things that it had in the update versions in the antivirus.

    Thanks Richard:

I used to be in construction/project management/general contracting, but the economy crashing took that away commercially.

Now I'm lucky to be working for a non-bailed out financial institution doing facilities (maintenance) project management.

My Honda is long gone, but the wife still has the almost flawless '07 Civic EX sedan.

but there is another law of physics that says warm oil lubricates better than cold oil but I haven’t been able to convince a certain someone in here of that so I stopped tryin

Who could that someone be? If it is me, then I wouldn't disagree one bit with what you just said in that statement.

btw, I also would not run the car at maximum capacity on an engine that hasn't warmed up.

The only thing I said was......all manufacturers, for several decades now, have said, it is better to put your car in drive and start driving right away, don't idle for 5 minutes like we used to do in the 60s.

If it helps, I do let the car warm up just so I know the engine is running smoothly, and I adjust the radio, put my seatbelt on, for 15 to 20 seconds before driving away, maybe it is a good practice, maybe doesn't do a thing, but old habits die hard, and I like to have some empathy for my car. How would you like to get kick started first thing in the morning?

However, I have probably wasted my time because it is probably somebody else you are referring to.

btw...I saw in todays paper, Pittsburgh is the #1 city in the US for people over 60.....23.6% of the population.
Tampa Bay area is 2nd, at 23.5%. Tampa area and Florida are growing in population and in those over 60 as baby boomers retire. The northern cities with larger senior populations are a result of young people leaving the industrial cities to find work, thus scuing the numbers to be older.

    Population Over 60
    1. Pittsburgh 23.6%
    2. Tampa Bay 23.5%
    3. Buffalo 21.6%
    4. Miami 21.3%
    5. Cleveland 21.2%

On some Honda models it comes on and on others you have to push the A/C button. If you are defrosting your windows you WANT your A/C on!

Modern A/C really doesn't affect gas mileage very much at all.

I went in for a rash on my leg last week and my doctor asked if I wanted a flu shot. When I told her I didn't she didn't press me at all or try to convince me to get one. Had she pushed in the slightest fashion I would have rolled up my sleeve. Still...I think I'm reconsidering.

Over the top? LOL.. Okay, maybe I did get a bit carried away.

All I know is that for me, a sample size of one, the flu shot was a terrible recommendation from my doctor last year.

Just like my first car, a '95 Dodge Neon sport sedan, earned Chrysler a well deserved lifetime ban and blacklist. In fact, the car was so freaking bad, I should forbid my unborn children from ever buying a Chrysler, making it a 2 lifetime ban (or 2 generations).

Then I began pulling on the monitor cord and it wouldn't come loose. Suddenly, I stopped and thought about it. This is the one that you have to unscrew.

You really don't have to screw it in. Just make sure it's in all the way. Since you won't be moving the tower or monitor often, you should be fine.

You can always screw it in if you noticed that the picture goes in and out.

to the forum. No not really, just on the way home from the gas station.
My wife bought a 2013 Escape and one of the kids is now driving her '09.
    They both have 'SYNC'.
Being a nice dad, I took the '09 to the gas station to fill it up.
On the way home, I ended up behind my wife at a red light in her new Escape.
A voice announced that 'SYNC has connected to your phone'.
That would be my wife's phone, so it seems like it's connected to 2 vehicles at the same time.

She probably didn't press you because she was having a busy day and it might not be worth her while financially to try to talk you into it-especially if she has other people waiting.

You are pretty well protected from the flu if you get the shot, if you don't, and under the right circumstances, like coming into contact with the virus, you will have a big chance of catching the flu and then you will be very sorry you didn't have it.

So far we know of about 8 people in our complex of 72 units who have the flu....that's a large percentage.

I know people think they won't get the flu, or they will wash their hands more often, or it is a conspiracy by the drug companies, but all the evidence points to the flu shot really helping to prevent the flu.

I wanted to goof on my wife, I was not upset.
Back when I was in high school, I worked at a department store.
We had an intercom in a back room that went to a speaker phone in the front.
I worked with a guy named Larry.
One time, he was helping out a customer with something at the counter next to the phone.
I got on the intercom and said 'Larry. this is you conscience speaking. You shouldn't lie to the customer like that'.
I don't think he ever got me back for that one. :shades:

I was expecting Lowes to send a hose for our new dishwasher via a courier.

I got an official looking email from Fed Ex and it said I wasn't home when they tried to deliver a package. If I press the button it will tell me where I can pick up my package, and give me a printable receipt.
Avast wouldn't let me open it, it said the email was from an unidentifiable source.

So, I phoned Fed Ex customer service. The rep asked me to give her the tracking number.

I gave her the tracking number and explained I couldn't open the printable receipt.

She laughed and said I got a fraudulent email. She said I could send it to abuse@fedex.com, which is what I did.

Similar thing happened to me a few months back. I received an email from, what I thought was, my bank. It asked for some specific info, etc., which I provided and luckily, when I tried to send the response, Norton refused to allow the response to go out because of an unknown site. I reported it to the bank and changed passwords and usernames. When the bank got the forwarded email from me, they verified it was fraudulent and reported it to their fraud department.

I have learned, through this experience, to never respond to emails asking for specific account info without first checking with my bank or credit card company.

This was about the same time as Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citi had their sites compromised by hackers - about 6 months ago.

Speaking of stastistics... there was a big discussion (about 8 years ago) about how electronic stability control was cutting accident rates by 60%. Bull, I thought. Too many variables, at that time, to make such a bold statement. And who reports an accident that didnt happen because of E.S.C?

With most cars these days having E.S.C as standard equipment, that rate should be down to about 0%.... right? lol

Haven't heard of any studies indicating fewer accidents than from 8 years ago. It's a nice safety feature to have for sure, espcially if you drive like a wild animal. For most people though it's something they'll never need.

  • That was my experience, Driver. I last contracted the flu, the real one and not just a bad cold virus that most people blame on the flu, as a freshman in college. Wiped me out for two weeks. I still vividly remember having to finish a paper while shivering with cold sweats, proping myself up against a wall in my chair because I didn't enough strength to sit normally. Grades suffered during that time and I literally wanted to die. That was the last year I went without a vaccine.

Congrats on taking your computer apart & putting it back together! I'm proud of you!

On a similar note, my Mom bought and iPhone5 last night. They obviously didn't hook up the phone to her Cayenne in the Apple Store. I figured she'd do without it for a day and I'd hook it up tomorrow (She comes to CT to watch my kids every Thursday). My Mom is a COMPLETE technophobe. She makes Richard look like Steve Jobs. ANyway, she calls me at work today and starts asking how she can set up the bluetooth. I start to walk her through the process over the phone & she says: "I gotta call you back."

2 minutes later she calls me all proud of herself that she hooked up the iPhone5 to her Porsche. I am proud of her and proud of you too Richard!

For the elder, or those in poor health, it can be a major illness. For most everyone else though it varies.

Working in healthcare, I've probably been exposed to more airborne pathagens you could throw a canadian snowball at. Yet, I've never come down with the "major illness" of flu. If you have the DNA to neutralize and defeat any virus that your body encounters, then it makes very little sense to get a flu shot. And lets not forget about the side effects.

    conspiracy or no conspiracy.

Sounds to me like you are heavily invested in drug companies. How much you get from those drug companies, that you're in with, for each time you write "conspiracy" on a web site? :P

People should question whether or not they feel a flu shot is beneficial to them. They should also question whatever studies or data they are presented are legitimate. Seems like the smart thing to do.

I senjt the email to our computer expert at work. He can go on the return address and he found it was an address registered in Brazil. He could go into it further and got the guys real email address, which is nothing like a fed ex address.

He said fed ex could try to chase him down, but, these guys keep changing their address often, just so they can't get caught.

    Here's one:
According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one-third of fatal accidents could have been prevented by the technology

    Electronic Stability Control

Please note...ESC can keep a car being driven fairly carefully on the road, or prevent a rollover - what it can't do is save someone from an accident if they are driving too fast, if there is hydroplaning, if they take corners at excessive speed.

If you think of the science behind ESC, you would have to come to the conclusion that for the average driver, it adds a degree of safety.

I love that one! To answer your questions, Norton is running on it. I update the program annually and receive monthly reports. The program does periodic scans. I leave the computer on all day but shut it down when I go to bed. Based on my sleep patterns, it is only shut down for 6 or 7 hours each night.

As for the protection package, the technician explained to me that no antivirus programs give 100% protection. This particular virus got by Norton. He said that these virus strands are becoming more and more sophisticated and more difficult to block. I also found his next comment interesting. He said that he would clean everything up for me but, if it happened again, he would suggest a new computer. He indicated that after the first clean up from a virus, the computer is never quite the same again. He said that it would be even less so after a second repair. Perhaps he was shooting me BS; I have no way of knowing. I do know this. My computer is now faster and more visual (sharper contrast and clearer picture) than it was when I bought it over a year ago. I received a complete printed report from Office Depot on all that was done. The cost was $150. That may be too high a price; I don't know. At least it is fixed and I am a happy camper. As usual, thanks for trying to assist me.

For most everyone else though it varies.

There are a few "younger" people on this site who had a miserable experience with the flu.

Some people may have stronger immunity, they may be more careful about what they do, etc., but, for most people the flu shot will reduce your chances of coming down with a bad case of the flu.

It's like insurance. Maybe, you won't need it and you pay your premiums and think if I had that money in my pocket I would have been better off over the last 20 years. On the other hand, if you were in an accident you would be glad you got insurance.

Same with the flu. It's just an extra layer of protection, not even close to 100% guaranty....but, why not get it.

I thought of another reason "men" don't get the flu shot besides conspiracy theories. It could be it is like asking someone for directions. It could be like actually having to reading "instructions". Or, they are afraid of the little needle.

btw...I believe you work in a hospital. There was a great book written in 1979 and it is ranked as #48 on amazon today called The Medical Heretic, written by Dr Mendelsohn. He says hospitals are the most dangerous place you can be. Lots of viruses, standing water, and sick people. There was a strike by hospital workers in Israel, and the death rate actually dropped during that time.

If I have investments in drug companies I don't know about them. I let so-called experts look after my savings. I don't operate on myself, work on my own teeth, or try to do legal things myself, and I don't handle my own money.

btw...the lead story on CNN was about the flu sweeping America, how many have died, and how it seems to be 10X more reported cases this year.
They talked about how it takes a few weeks to build up immunity after receiving your vaccine too, and some people catch the flu in that time, which may explain what happened to andre.

I am just a computer challenged person too, but in my humble opinion $150 is about the cut off point for a repair....especially if the computer is approaching the 5 year mark.

Any more than that, and you may as well put that money towards getting a $400 to $500 computer which will have a lot more power and will last another 5 years. Using the driver method of depreciation...a computer is going to cost around $100 a year for the basic unit...it is pretty cheap entertainment and source of information....plus keeps the brain working.

The other thing you could have tried would be a free malaware program...I used that once, with help from our IT guy (talked me through it) and it worked fine for me.

Hope that worked out and you get many more miles from your PC.

Thanks for providing that personal information. I'll have to be honest with you. I was trying to build a simple personality profile based on your occupation, where you live, your marital status, what you drive, your reasoning and thinking behind some of your posts, etc. Though you're not overly optimistic about some things, you do seem to reason things out and you have the fortitude to do something about certain issues. Those are good qualities. You may be a little too suspect about some of life's events, but I imagine that you're pretty good to people on the job and at home. I think that you're intelligent and inquisitive with just a few rough edges which should smooth out with age. I try to think of myself at age 34---have to reach way back. :D I was pretty much of a fire ball myself, ready to challenge all evil doers---even a Rite-Aid store if necessary. ;) As time went by, I mellowed. I tried to remain optimistic, especially for my students. They needed to believe that the world was a worthy and happy place to be. I think that you believe that as well.
