Correct. In fact, the guy that developed the round wheel improved upon the original triangular one....

Exactly the point. I think originally they would do things like put logs down and roll the items along, and then move the logs to the front. The wheel was a step forward. Then came spokes, and then tires. Inventing is evolutionary.

BTW........I think regarding battery power........there will be stations that will be able to do a quick recharge....OR, take out the old battery and insert a new one. I always said this in business...and you can quote me if you like.....there are always problems, the guy who solves the problem will be the one who will be successful.

True, but not if someone else solves the problem better and with a totally different approach.

The steam car, for instance, reached a very high rate of refinement with the magnificent Doble automobile. Doble solved all the steam car's problems but by the 1920s, conventional car development (and cost) made that irrelevant.

for me, fast charging is a great idea, switching batteries is a dumb idea.

  • mako1amako1a Member Posts: 1,855

The last news I heard on quick charging car batteries came in the form of a capacitor which is installed in the car. Considering the small size and low weight it can hold a lot of charge and disburse it slowly back into the cars batteries. Sounds right to me.

Totally agree. Sometimes a new idea comes along and the old idea never gets developed further. A good example is pay per view. Kind of ruined Blockbuster and the video store business, but it changed the way we see movies at home

for me, fast charging is a great idea, switching batteries is a dumb idea.

Why is changing batteries dumb? They will be able to change batteries faster than filling up with gas.

Others with opinions or (perhaps) actual data will chime in, I'm sure. My put is that if you're not planning to drive for extended periods at or above 120-150 mph you'll never see the difference. I'm not sure you would if you did, but the point is that ultra tires have to be tested as if they were on the autobahn all day at max speed.

I too am a big fan of Howard's. He's still the best interviewer and brilliantly funny, but I stopped listening about 2 years ago. I used to love the show's continuity throughout the week. Then He went to 4 days a week and I dealt with it. It really bothered me when he went to 3 days per week in addition to taking lots and lots of time off (which he's entitled to). There was too much "Richard & Sal," too many callers I just couldn't tolerate (Eric the Midget & Eric from Hoboken). I used to love how he covered current events. It just wasn't the same when something big happened & he wasn't on the air until 2 weeks later or even if something went down on a Wednesday afternoon & then it'd be "old news" by the time he got back in the air Monday AM.

I do miss the inside jokes, Fred's perfectly timed drops, George Takei, Riley Martin, & how Howard let me into his life and made me laugh for so many years.

If you do buy some new tires, be sure to shop around.
My daughter just is getting some top rated Michelin's for her Escape.
Original price was 179 per tire at the dealer , but they price match.
Found them for $145 and the dealer is price matching them.
I looked up the place she got the low price from, and $145 is their price.

My wife and I were talking about the Swami skits that Carson would do while we were waiting for the salesperson to come back to her desk shopping for a car Monday. I liked Jay Leno better than Letterman, despite Letterman's having Hoosier roots at my alma mater Ball State.

Are any of those reruns on youtube or Amazon's videos?

I think battery switching is dumb because it's like cutting a stick of butter with a chain saw. It's over-tech for the problem at hand. AND you don't want someone else's batteries, do you? So you'll have to go back and get your own at some point. Tesla can't warranty batteries forever---someone is going to be without a chair when the music stops.

Battery swapping is IMO a cludge to make up for a lack of efficiency in the product.

  • [Deleted User][Deleted User] Posts: 0
    edited March 2014

Why do you have to own the battery? Buy a car, lease the battery. Leasing company owns the battery pool and guarantees a minimum efficiency. Users pay a fee. When the battery drops below the min efficiency the battery is then recycled. I don't see how this is worse than gas technology.

Think about the ridiculous levels of technology, human effort, and resources we're pouring into crude oil exploration and extraction, crude transit across the globe, refining of the crude to useable fuels, transit of fuel to gas stations, storage, and final dispensing. Not to mention the environmental impacts of the whole lifecycle and over $1.5 trillion spent in two wars in just the last decade. Plus the human health aspects.

The main difference is that most of the gas-based complication is hidden from the consumer.

Driving entirely on the street I'm hoping to get@26k or more- a bit less if I track it. The PSS have a higher treadwear rating than most tires in their class- and while you can't really compare the numbers between brands, it is a pretty good indication of longevity.

As for peformance categories, there is quite a lot of overlap with respect to actual performance; the PSS actually outperforms some of the tires in Tire Rack's "Extreme Performance" category.

I agree 100%. I only listen in the car for about an hour 3X a week so I don't miss the continuity. If I am listening on Sirius in the car I can change to Howard West Coast Feed if there is something I don't want to hear on the main Howard. I think of it more like a bar-b-q propane tank. You used to take your empty one and wait around until the guy fills it up. Now you just take in your old one and you pick up a refilled one. The units could be sealed so no one fools around with them.

But, a battery is really a battery. Just go in, slide out the old and put in the new already to go. Maybe my friend with the germ-free business could sanitize them :p

But just picking up a replacement turned into a ripoff technique. Instead of the local propane store charging per pound for what they put in, the exchange places were underfilling the tanks and calling it the next higher pound. More profit. I always have mine done at a local place with a huge propane tank and a scale.

It has been another example of the wonderful shrinking ray gun they have at the grocery stores. Products keep coming out with less and less in the box/container. Even my ChickFilA grilled sandwich seems to have shrunk as they converted to a "new" taste of backyard barbeque, which was wonderfully popular where test marketed--in Orlando.

The tank exchanges are convenient, but more expensive. I usually end up doing the exchange, but I have two tanks so at least I know they are getting a completely empty one (I always have a full one stored and ready). I think you save about 5 bucks finding a place that just fills what you have.

While a "full" tank was 20 pounds, the switch out tanks only had 17.5 pounds, which was buried deep in the information. A friends of our drove one of those thermos propane tank trucks delivering for many years. His company also filled the small home tanks.

Imid...as you mentioned, Letterman has his roots in Indiana. He was also inspired by a local Cincinnati live TV icon, Paul Dixon.

I know my parents enjoyed Carson because of the guests he had on his show (Buddy Hacket, Joan Rivers, Don Rickles, et.al.). But, those were "old school" types of entertianers that never did appeal to me.

Letterman seemed to appeal more to the next generation, as he was closer to our age and seemed to relate better to us.

As word came out regarding Carson, throwing his considerable weight around in the TV world (black balling Joan Rivers comes immediately to mind), he didn't seem like a very nice person.

A few years ago, there was a show spotlighting the way both Leno and Letterman fought for Carson's show. Interesting, if it was true. At one point, it depicted Leno hiding in a closset at the TV studios to hear what the execs were saying about Letterman. He actually admited he had done some of those outrageous things all in the interest of his goal to get The Tonight Show gig.

Wouldn't you knwo it, the TV studios ended up screwing him over, forcing him to retire, not once, but twice.....while his ratings were still at the top of the heap.

Gotta like Leno for no other reason than his car collection, which I'm immensely jealous of.

Carson didn't black ball her - she just wasn't invited back to the Tonight Show. She was the permanent guest host and took a competing job on FOX. She called to let him know but he was already aware of her decision. What bothered him was that he launched her career and gave her a permanent gig. He was offended that she didn't talk to him before becoming a competitor. It was an issue of respect.

For the longest time, in fact, just at the last need for a tank (late Summer 2013), I always had my tank refilled. But I finally caved to the convenience of getting a tank at Lowes which is a lot closer than running to the mom/pop home center that I used for more years that I can count. I’m not especially proud of doing that but that’s probably going to continue. I had my own tank refilled because I knew it hadn’t been abused not to save a buck or two. The difference for me was not 5 bucks like it is for you. In my case it was around a 2 buck savings maximum. So maybe I was getting ripped off all along. I have contemplated several times about getting another tank but I don’t like the idea of it being in the garage. If I had a shed, I’d probably do it.

Couldn't you say the same thing about hydrocarbon fuel? It's just sunlight stored in carbon millions of years ago and buried in the ground.

No you cannot, With oil or coal once its burned its gone. With hydrogen it's always there, all you have to do is put the energy back in and it's good to go again. Cant do that with gas.

Or look at it this way, you can burn that hydrocarbon fuel to create electricity and create (or better isolate) hydrogen. You cannot use the hydrogen to produce electricity and create a hydrocarbon fuel.

I think you forgot about most important thing about hydrogen cell - "how do you make it so it uses less energy to make it than it later produces".

Short answer is you cannot. There is always going to be some loss of energy in the conversion process, but even if you make it 100% efficient you cannot get more from less.

I see it as not being much different than say swapping a propane tank. You can either go to a place that refills a tank or to a place that will just change your empty one for a full one. Swapping it is a bit faster and the price is pretty much the same. And in my case swapping the tank is way faster because I would have to drive 10 times further to get it refilled.

keep in mind that battery swapping would not be a frequent occurrence. especially on an electric with decent range. Only on the rare case where you had to travel a longer distance, or really did not have time in between to recharge. I would be fine with an electric for around town, but never for trips. But, if there were swap out places within range of where I was going, and I was sure they would be there, I might consider it.

normally though would just plug in and charge.

still, a volt set-up (on board charger) seems to be the most practical idea. Or have a little trailer that you only bring with you when you travel!

I've got a rather large one in my back yard that powers my generator. I used it for a few days after Sandy & should get it refilled.

For my BBQ, I always keep one underneath & a full one around. The original purchase price was $50, but then it only costs $14 or so to be refilled.

My propane tank is expiring this year, but it still has plenty of gas in it. I'm just going to buy another new one from the local guy where I fill it.

Just have one huge barbeque for the whole neihborhood......use up all that propane and then buy a new one.
