Posted this in the CCBA thread, but thought it would have relevance here, too....

Cadillac is trying hard to get people into their showrooms. Hot on the heels of sending me a $50 Visa gift card from the autoshow this past winter, I just received an invitation to take another look, offering $1,500 Conquest allowance on a purchase/lease of any Cadillac, and $100 Visa gift card for another test drive.

I might start signing up for every manufacturer's "incentives". Could be a nice supplement to my income.

How come I never get any of those offers? I guess I need to get to an auto show, but that won't be until December when it's on Miami Beach. The Ft. Lauderdale show was last month, but didn't get a chance to get down there.

It's difficult to pull up to a Cadillac dealership in a new Mercedes CLS550 and tell the salesman I'm looking for my next car! I'd have to think of something a little more original to convince the salesman or the manager that I am not wasting their time, LOL.

    DINNER ON THE HOUSE!

I don't know if I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but Dad and I were at NYY Steak House at the casino having our dinner. We always make reservations for 5:00 PM - in that way, they are not crowded and we can be home by 7:00 PM.

That evening, we had our usual waiter. He brought us our bottle of champagne and took our orders. We didn't order any appetizers, just the main course. Dad ordered a Lobster Tail and I order two Lobster Tails, both broiled and each with a side of the skillet potatoes, which are out of this world. The waiter got he order at 5:05 PM.

We were sitting in a booth looking right through the ceiling to floor glass which allows you to see the chefs preparing steaks, lamb chops, veal chops, etc. A half hour goes by - but no dinner, however patrons who arrived after us were getting their dinner order brought to their tables. Another 15 minutes goes by and we're seeing loads of lobster tails coming out of the kitchen and lots of steaks, but alas, nothing for us.

I looked at my Dad and I said to him, "...when Mickey's little hand is on the 6 and his big hand is on the 12, we're out of here. Sure enough, it was 6:00 PM, but no dinner, no waiter, no nothing. We finished the champagne, got up and walked out of the dining room. I stopped at the concierge's desk and told them I'll pay for the champagne, but we are leaving. She told me she'll take care of the champagne and we left. About 20 steps away is the Italian Restaurant that we frequent on Sundays, so we went in there and they seated us immediately with our usual waiter as we are good customers and we had Italian food instead.

The Manager of the Italian restaurant cam over (his name is Mike) and asked us what happened over at NYY. The Casino owns 50% of NYY and 100% of all the other restaurants there. He was concerned because he could see I was fuming. I told him what happened happened - that we waited for 1 hour, and that was all we could take. 10 minutes later, the director of Food and Beverage for the entire Casino sat down at our table and was apologetic, etc. He said he investigated what had happened and found out that the order had been placed at 5:07 PM, but there was some problem with the chefs not putting the check in the right position in their rack, so the order got lost. He said it wasn't the waiter's fault, but the chef's fault.

I looked him squarely in the eye and said, "...NO, IT WAS THE WAITER'S FAULT! A good waiter, when he eyes a problem, communicates with his customers that there was a problem and offers them a cocktail on the house, or a complimentary dessert, or something - but you don't leave customers sitting for 1 hour without communicating with them!"

The Director of Food and Beverage agreed that we should have been communicated with, but that the real problem was in the kitchen. I vehemently disagreed - it's the communication that was lacking - not the fact that we had been waiting. In any case, they picked up the tab for our Italian dinner with our second bottle of champagne and that was the end of it - or so I thought.

Dad and I eat at the 1st Street Deli for lunch once a week and have either Reuben Sandwiches or Corned Beef Sandwiches. While we were eating there last Thursday afternoon, the Director of Beverage and Food Services happened to be walking through the restaurant and saw me. He came over and asked if anyone had contacted me from NYY. I said NO. I had been expecting a call, but never got one. He said he would take care of that.

I called my slot host last Friday and asked her to make reservations at NYY for us for Tuesday, but that I did not want our regular waiter, we wanted David. I also asked her to clear the way in terms of no one bothering us or bringing up the issue we had with them. She agreed.

So the other night, we arrived a few minutes after 5:00 PM. "Welcome back Mike and Herb, we missed you - we are happy you decided to give us another opportunity to make you happy!" So I guess my host laid down the law with them. We were seated in a booth away from everyone and David, our second favorite, no first favorite, waiting brought out a bottle of Dom Peringnon and indicated that this was on the house for what had happened the two weeks before. How could I say "no", so we ordered our usual. We had a great dinner - their food is really to die for, the champagne was great, Dad's huge piece of chocolate cake was great, and we left completely satisfied.

I received a call at home from the Director yesterday and he asked me how dinner was. I responded it was delicious as usual and the service was impeccable. He then said that when you have your dinner at the Italian restaurant Sunday afternoon, you will be provided with another surprise - let me know how you like it.

So, I am anxiously awaiting Sunday afternoon - probably they will pick up the tab again. I don't think they want to lose me as one of their players. But I must say the experience a couple of weeks ago was not much fun, that's for sure. Did they make up for it, YOU BET!

Mike, is this casino in Boca? I haven't been there in 10 years, no casino there back then. I do enjoy Mohegan Sun in CT, but I'm far, far from a whale. I don't play slots, only blackjack. I really just enjoy the casino atmosphere (smoke-free areas, that is!).

I think I missed that post or I would have done my best to take you up on the offer.

Actually, other years we travelled to other areas in Florida, including the Keys, this year, we had lots to do near Tampa, and just didn't venture very far.

Make that offer next November and we will try to meet up.......that would be fun.

Is this the NYY Steak 5550 NW 40th Street, Coconut Creek, FL .? I just checked triadvisor and they do get 4 out of 5 stars. Lots of good reviews, but a few terrible, including one guy who waited an hour and 25 minutes for his steak. I use tripadvisor a lot, but, no matter how good a restaurant is...there will be some disgruntled person who will give it a bad review.

In your case, it would be well deserved. But, at least they did try to fix the problem or make you satisfied, you can't do more than that. Sometimes, mistakes do happen, it's how the mistake is handled that makes the difference.

No, it's about 3 miles south of Boca Raton in Coconut Creek, along State Road 441 just at Sample Road. The Seminoles own the Casino, but the Seminoles have 5 Casinos in the State of Florida - Hollywood has two -the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and the Seminole Casino in Hollywood - 2 different venues. Then they have the Coconut Creek Casino, another one not too far from Naples I believe, and a big one in Tampa.

None of them are "smoke-free" unfortunately, but the Hard Rock has a section that is. I have problems with the smoke, but I usually don't stay long enough for me to start coughing - even though they exhaust what they can.

The State of Florida has a Compact with the Seminole Tribe - the only casinos in the State that offer table games like roulette, blackjack, and several other card games including poker are the Seminole Casinos. They pay the State of Florida hundreds of millions of dollars a year for that right. Palm Beach County (where Boca is) is not permitted by law to have gambling casinos. Miami/Dade and Broward Counties are allowed to have Casinos, but only where a paramutual venue exists or existed.

Hialeah Race Track (no longer racing horses, however) has a Casino with Slots. Gulfstream Race Track has a Casino with Slots. In Dania Beach where Dania Jai Alai used to be has a Casino with slots. Where Miami Jai Alai used to be there is now a Casino with slots there. There are several other Casinos, including one in Pompano Beach where the Pompano Race Track (Trotters) used to be is new - Slots of course. Other areas that may open a Casino include the Dog Tracks that used to flourish down here.

The Seminole Tribe is fighting the State to maintain their monopoly on Blackjack and several other card table games. The State Legislature tabled action on that - so the Seminoles are quite happy about that.

The Seminole Casinos have a tight slot payout on all their machines. It is much easier in Las Vegas to win money at the slots than it is here in Florida - I used to frequent Vegas when I lived in Palm Desert - just a 4.5 hour drive up Interstate 15.

But the Coconut Creek Casino (where I live) is huge as is the Hard Rock Hotel.

What I love most about the Casino are the Restaurants - they serve superior food and beverages. And their restaurants are smoke free, so I can sit and enjoy my meal.

MAIN ENTRANCE TO MY COMMUNITY STILL NOT OPEN

The main entrance to my community has been closed now for 1 full year - just to build a security building with two arches (one on each side which cars are supposed to go under). If you saw how small this building is (which is still not completed), you would laugh yourself into tears. Over one year, and still not open.

As a comparison, Hyatt put up a sign on Route 441 in North Coconut Creek about 7 months ago announcing that they were building the first full-service hotel in Coconut Creek. That Hotel is 10 stories high and is in it's final stages - expected to open May 1, 2014. That's a 10 story hotel - not a motel - started and completed in 8 months. It's no joke. Now compare that to our small entry building for security - 1 year - still not open.

Truly the entire Condo Board is the laughing stock of the entire community - $500,000 spent on a building I thought couldn't cost more than $200,000 to build. Boy, was I wrong.

I keep asking the Vice President of the board to give me an idea when the work will be finished so we don't have to all go through the auxiliary gate like we've been doing for a year. He smiles and responds, "...it will be ready when it's ready. Pretty soon now, isn't it beautiful?" I want to take my hands, place them around his wrinkled neck, and slowly tighten - but alas, I'd spend the rest of my life in prison - nothing is worth that, I guess.

When I explained to him that the Hyatt (I think that's who built it) was built and opened in 8 months, he said, "...their workers must be faster at what they do than ours!" NO KIDDING!

Yes, that's the address, you've got the right one. There are only 3 NYY Steak Houses in the U.S.A., one at Yankee Stadium, one in midtown Manhattan, N.Y.C., and the one here. Their food is outstanding.

As to your final comment, of course - it's always the way it is handled. No matter what happened in the kitchen, it's the waiter's responsibility to inform the customer why there is a delay and to somehow accommodate the customer. That never happened.

The manager of the restaurant said the chef and the waiter were "COUNSELED" about my experience and said that both had agreed it was not handled well. If that's not an understatement, nothing is.

But I still would recommend that restaurant. The food is so well prepared and the service so superior (except 2 weeks ago) that we eat there once a week. Same with the Italian Restaurant there (Sorrissi's) and the 1st Street Deli. The 1st Street Deli is just like what you would expect to find in Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan, NYC. Pickle barrels with different pickles in each barrel, pickled green tomatoes, corned beef and pastrami to die for, great soups, etc. Even the waiters all look like they were put on a plane at LaGuardia and flown directly here. That's the bests part of the Casino - great food.

I love wagons. If they made nothing but wagons and convertibles I'd be fine. Of course I have 5 (soon to become 4) cars. 3 are sedans. The ones I drive are the wagon and the convertible. The only thing I don't like about convertibles is they are always two doors. I much prefer 4. Have done the higher view minivan thing and tested SUVs. No thanks.

Now my question is what the heck makes a CUV a CUV vs a wagon. I mean an X1 sure looks like a wagon to me. Properly optioned I'd love that!

What happened: Motor mounts failed. They have to be tough enough to keep a weighty engine in place, yet soft and pliable enough to allow for flex and to prevent the transfer of vibration to the vehicle's occupants. But when more than just a random amount of GM mounts started crumbling in the early 1970s, both GM and NHSTA knew something was up. GM issued the recall before NHSTA made it official. Curiously, the official GM fix didn't include replacing the mounts, but simply anchored the engine to the firewall with a cable to prevent the engine from moving under mount failure, a situation that often resulted in unintended and uncontrollable acceleration.

A friend has a '68 Camaro SS - he's the original owner! His car was recalled and still has the factory remedy in place. In this case it involves a large cable wrapped around the drivers side motor mount and connected to the left side of the front stub frame.

HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER IS ENOUGH HORSEPOWER?

Snake, you mentioned the "V" Cadillac which has 550 hp, if memory serves me right. 550 hp is an amazing power plant on any vehicle - wagon, sedan or coupe. I know the CLS63 AMG has the same and the CLS63 AMG S has 570+ hp. What the heck do you do with that much power?

My CLS550 is rated at 402 hp with 447 lb ft of torque. Even that meager hp rating is enough to give me whiplash when I accelerate from 35 mph to 70 mph. Where does one use 550+ hp?

I read in an article that the 2016 E Class Mercedes will have their new inline 6 with twin turbos developing over 350 hp along with their new 9 speed transmission. 350 hp is not chicken feed. I know Infinit's V6 delivers close to that.

So, as I said, HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER IS ENOUGH HORSEPOWER?

Good point. Very scary to think of cars like these in the hands of Adolescence kids.

With today's young drivers not paying attention to the roads , on the phone, driving way to fast I say to myself...... God help that poor xxx that is out with his family and someone in a vehicle like this decides to take a turn at 130 mph or has a bunch of his friends in for a joy ride.. I see it often here in New york.

My R-spec Genesis sedan cranks out 430 hp. This vehicle is so fast its scary. To much motor for any street vehicle. 0 to 60 in 4.2 sec. It should be illegal to drive cars that go this fast..

My 300hp BMW X-5..... is a perfect balance of power and handling for that SUV..

Get to the next stoplight 10 seconds faster than the guy in a Fiesta.

I do have to say that cars like the V series and AMG's have way to much horse power. I would think that the V-6 in the CTS wagon is more than enough for the car. As long as I can keep up with traffic without winding up the RPM's to far and can easily get to highway speeds by the end of the ramp I am happy.

This absolutely describes how vehicles get sold in the U.S. It's nothing to do with what the vehicle will do but rather what others think of the vehicle.

    Stigma? Give me a break.

That said, minivans have it and station wagons have it even worse. Somehow the boxy in-between vehicles don't, so they sell in large numbers.

    P. T. Barnum and H. L. Mencken ("no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public") had it right many many years ago.

Mike, it wasn't Snake talking about the AMG with 550 HP and CLS with 402 HP, it was me.
I'm happy with the 420 HP in the Mustang and why not...I waited 40 years for them to put some real HP in there. This is my 6th or 7th Mustang and they finally got it right.
The nice thing about power is when you enter the interstate and some dude cuts left of you from behind keeping you in the right lane a few cars longer, you can blow him away at your leisure when traffic is just right for you and he can't do anything about it.

Mako, I was responding to Snake about horsepower in general after he mentioned the Cadillac "V". I do remember you posting about the CLS, but that was a week or so ago, if I'm not mistaken. Sorry for the confusion.

What I was trying to say was there is a point when a street stock car can possess too much hp. I think 550 hp is way too much. IMHO, I feel 325 - 350 hp is very sufficient for providing just about all the acceleration power 95% of drivers need or will ever use.

My CLS has so much torque and acceleration power, it almost gets away from me every so often. The Mustang you drive is even faster and more powerful when comparing hp/wt ratio.

I mentioned in my previous post that an inline 6 with 350 hp is really more than sufficient to provide the kick anyone would need for entering a highway. I can leave rubber if I kick mine at 30 mph to the floor. Who needs all that hp?

That was the point I was trying to make.

the silly thing about the whole wagon/CUV issue is the cases where it really is the same car. Sube legacy/outback, Volvo V70/XC70. Same body/chassis, just add some plastic cladding and jack it up a bit. So same utility value, with inferior handling, performance and MPG. But hey, they are "macho", and of course, can go off road (as in, the same gravel parking lots the AWD wagon version can handle).

We got the CUV because my wife liked it. She drove a minivan for 17 years, so was not worried about stigma. We did need the room/capacity of something wagonish, and there really were no wagons that fit the overall bill. She also likes sitting up a bit higher, being used to the van, and at this point does not care for driving a lower sedan.

Mike, I think our RDX with a whopping 270ish HP is a bit of a hot rod. If I punch that coming up an on ramp, it shoves you back in the seat and takes off nice and quick. I have never come close to a situation where I felt it needed more power.

    Nothing to do with grabbing.

It doesn't seem as interesting as your assumption either. Oh well...

I hosted chat rooms for many years when MSN still had them. Before being accepted I had to submit a nickname. Many of the existing hosts had unique or just downright clever names. I thought about it for a few days and one day I was walking past my wifes mini-van (which she drove when the kids were little) and right there on the back of the van was the word "VENTURE". I figured I wasn't clever so I just used that. B)

    @abacomike‌

Today was a special day. Dad & I had tickets to Yankees vs. Red Sox (Yankees won just in case anybody was wondering) @ The Stadium & today is 25 years to the day that my Grandpa (his Dad) died. So I went on the NYY STEAK website and made reservations for 6:30 pm. I surprised Dad when he said: what are we doin for dinner?

We each took down the 27 ounce Bone In Rib Eye. I'm usually a filet or ny strip steak guy, but I figured why not try something else. It was delicious. We both were literally eating off of the bone! Thanks for the recommendation!

Glad I could help. I don't usually get excited about food and restaurants, but over the last 4 or 5 months, we've been eating at NYY Steak House once a week. Even with that one night of unfortunate service, I still find their steaks, lobster tails and veal chops the best I've ever had.

Did they serve you those mini-sourdough pretzels with the bread course? My Dad just loves them.

I've heard they are considering opening a few more in the next few years. Our NYY Is filled with old time Yankee photos of Berra, Mantle, Maris, Martin, etc. even the dinner plates have baseballs with famous numbers of players in the plate's glaze.

I've eaten many times at Ruth's Chris, Morton's, New York Prime, etc., but they don't compare to NYY.

I did find NYY a bit pricey (our usual tab runs $145 without drinks) but since we get comped, no sweat. If we didn't get comped, no way could we eat there that frequently.

For all you BMW drivers, this was taken in Boston.

That car was parked in front of a hydrant needed for an 8 alarm fire in East Boston. The homes there are close together and with the memory of the tragic loss of two firefighters last week, the BFD doesn't waste time looking for owners or moving cars. It's wet stuff on the hot stuff NOW.

It had been registered 3 days earlier.

Don't park in front of a hydrant.

In reality though they could have just put the hose on the hood or roof. I see no reason to break windows and feed it through the inside of the car unless they just wanted to make a point (which I'm sure they did). It would probably been quicker to lay it on the hood too.

The firemen could have routed the hose over the hood at a lesser angle from the attachment at the fireplug.

However I do see some irony in the BMW's having become a firetruck.

I can leave rubber if I kick mine at 30 mph to the floor. Who needs all that hp?

I do. When you can get it to chirp like that at 60, it's just right.

    I'm with you. Mako.

Fastest street car I ever drove was a Lingenfelter Corvette. THAT WAS TOO MUCH FUN! I don't even remember how much HP it had, just that it would get rubber in the first 3 gears.

2nd fastest was my late S4. Way under rated when it came to the power dept.

My late Mustang GT and BMW 335i would slip in there somewhere.

My current TL is no slouch, but not nearly as ferocious as the above.

At one point when I was younger a friend and I owned/built a ratty track Mustang with a 351 Cleveland. It would run in the neighborhood of 13 sec 1/4s all day long. Getting it down the track was an adventure, though. We had to keep parts from falling off as we banged through the gears. Quarter panels would shake as it went down the track....literally.

Even new stock GTs would beat it today.

put that in the same category with the policemen who overstep their duties and bounds of authority and become military in how they treat citizens. The firemen could have routed the hose over the hood at a lesser angle from the attachment at the fireplug.

Firefighters could not route the hose over the hood or roof. The hose would have kinked and reduced water flow to the pumper truck. The goal is a straight shot off the street facing connection and large raddi in the hose.

In fact, they had to use a couple of firefighters and some onlookers to bounce the car a few inches into the street so the hose could straighten out. Notice the dent? That was made by the hose when it was pressurized, slammed into the car and kinked.

BTW - notice the wheels turned to the curb? IMHO, the owner did that intentionally to prevent being towed because a hydrant violation is usually followed by towing.

School bus drivers have to deal with such folks? We hear the driver but don't see her attempt to intervene.

No wonder schools are difficult places to work. I love how the bully's brother steps in to double team the poor victim.

Yes, Mako, that is one time when I really appreciate the extra power too! If I am behind someone merging onto the highway, I usually stay back a bit to give the guy a chance to get on or move over a lane, before I do it. But, there seems to be a new breed who use the flowing traffic to run interference, and use that opportunity to jump one car ahead. I am beginning to think along with a driving test there should be a phycological profile test taken at the same time.

Your comment about "they use less gas" seemed puzzling to me. How or why do wagons use less gas?

Wagon that is based on sedan usually uses 3-5% more gas than sedan (more weight and different aerodynamics), but significantly less gas than SUV, CUV or any other high-seat/high-roof vehicle. They handle exactly the same as their sedan counterparts, but they offer much better utility due to rear hatch. Europeans buy those (as well as smaller hatchbacks and sedan-looking hatchbacks, like Mazda6 used to be five years ago - they sometimes call them liftbacks). 5-door versions of so-called class A to D vehicles (from Honda Fit to E-class Mercedes) are there more popular than actual sedans. US-market tastes are more similar to those of Middle East, Turkey, Russia: either traditional 4-door sedan, or larger SUV.

European want to have full driveability of sedan (no compromise) with added utility of fifth door. I was always struck by how Americans cannot fathom that concept - sales figures don't lie, they simply don't. It's funny how trauma of 70s Pontiac or Ford wagons can still weigh today.

Guys, how do I leave a little footprint about my car, as others do? Still can't figure that one out.

Near the top on the right the little wheel with cogs...click on it and select "account settings".
Once on that, go to left side of page and select "signature settings"
Write them in....then have fun trying to get back to sales frontlines.

Agree about wagons in Europe, you see them all over the place...not too many SUVs.
