We had a 2000 XJR on our preowned lot when I started here (2001). It was carnival red (medium burgandy) and it stuck here for two years! whenever we had to go to training anywhere I would grab it. It was an awesome vehicle-I was attatched to it when it finally sold.

The "P" with the brakes around it is an ISO standard. The whole world uses it. There has been a lot of research into those icons and how they are created.

Sony did it again with the mini-disk. I loved that system, but it didn't take off.

apparently the adult movie industry did not read consumer reports. From what I have heard VHS became the defacto standard because the adult film industry started distributing their movies on VHS tapes, and not Beta-Max.

The problem with beta max was the length of hours it would play. It would only hold one movie. VHS came out with 4,6,8 and 8 hour tapes. Heard that on the history or discovery channel so it must be true :)

Yup I know it was an international standard but I couldn't remember the name of the organization.

RE: Our discussion of the old Ford Contour we have already discussed how Americans need or are at least perceived to need "special amercanized" products.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Ehh those MY AJ-V8 engines concern me because of the timing chain tensioner issues. I know most of them have been taken care of by now but it is still a concern.

For a XJR I either want a 1996 or 1997. If I want something newer then I am going for a Super V8.

    Sex sells.

Seems to me the pretty women would be doing better to sell the cars, if that were the case.

What about you mac? You ever try the old "oops I dropped my car keys and have to slowly bend over and pick them up" trick on your female customers?

Nah thats OK I would have to do the same thing as I would on a new Range Rover and wait a year or two for a nice CPO one.

I will let someone else take that 20,000-30,000 dollars of depreciation in the first 12 months.

very true- we did have a black super with 8k that sold for about $70.

This past Saturday, after purchasing a gas fireplace insert for the Evil Wife, and on our way to Home Depot to purchase (at her "request") a new front storm door, I surprised her by pulling into our local Jag/LR dealer. On the Automile! I told her I wanted to prove to her that the kids would fit in the back of an XK. And to put a scare into her, let her know that I may actually be XK shopping...

Anyway, we enter the showroom (to basic silence, not a customer or employee to be seen) and I head over to an XKR Coupe. Salesman comes in side door from outside, asks if he can help. I forthrightly thank him and tell him that today I'm just a lookie-lou. He smiles and moves on, with an honest comment regarding the "back seat" in the XK. Ok, Evil Wife won't even attempt to get into the back seat after eyeballing it. I'm sure the kids would fit, though...

On to an XK 'vert. Out of one of the offices comes a handsome saleswoman who asks if she can be of assistance. Before I can id myslef as Mr. Lookie-Lou, the evil wife states, "My husband loves this car and wants to buy it. Write it up!" The saleswoman's face lights up and my mood sinks as I quickly apologize and inform her that at this point I'm in the pre-early-preliminary phases of maybe shopping for an XK. Saleswoman's smile turns upside-down. Offers me a brochure w/her card. (side note, don't like the brouchure, too avant garde. One of the loveliest designs on the road, just show the car! No fancy lenses, digital enhancements, thank you.) My EW meant no harm, was kidding. I later chastised her, explaining the error of her ways...

So, B_R, Jescue, LR44 if that was any of y'all again, my apologies!

As we left, a couple who looked like they just stepped out of the J. Crew catalog pulled up in a Yukon Denali. Biff had a a clipboard with a piece of paper covered in penciled in figures. Looked like Muffy was about to get a new RR!?

We skulked away... On to Home Depot where, as always, Lola will get what she wants and my garage will have to continue to be happy housing my (Zaino!) shiny Abyss Blue TL!

All you people have never discussed how a salesperson's appearance equates sales success. I remember a large Chevy dealer employed a saleswoman named Nicole. Nicole looked like she could have posed in any popular men's magazines. She wore leather skirts and tight tops. She sold cars successfully because she could look at a customer, especially men with her seductive eyes and get them to sign on the dotted lines. Apologies to the head of this forum but this women was an expert at nonverbal communication. When she would smile she could melt ice. :)

I had a horrible July only delivered one car. The second car I was supposed to deliver today is being pushed off till tomorrow because she is stuck on the train coming out of NYC and won't get here in time.

But you know what that is fine with me because...

I have six cars going this week, three used and three new, plus one more going on Monday for next week. That puts me one car away on both new and used for the first bonus level.
  • jescuejescue Member Posts: 521
quite a roomy back seat, isnt it? ;) It wasnt me as I only wish we had Rover. You can wait for the new XF this spring,it will have somewhat more of a backseat and looks great. I agree about the brochure too. Looks like some 60s flashback.

ok, just had this guy come and ask if any of our cars had lumbar support for the passenger seat. Any of you ford, chevy, toyota, honda people out there have that on any of your cars? He says he's bought many crown vics and they all had it, as did many of his other cars. I don't remember seeing it on any used cars we've had here, again non-luxury cars, so i was kind of dumb founded when he said many other did.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Seven for august actually all approved with deposits in and ready to go.

Oh wait I forgot one of my car collector clients is getting another Range Rover, his fifth from me in less then two years, this month too so that puts me at eight.

Agree on the back seat of the XK that is my only real complaint about the car. It has the smallest back seat of any GT car even then 911 back seats are more useful. I kind of want Jag to put a manual in it but a car in that segment/size doesn't really need one. Now if Jag ever makes a smaller coupe/roadster with the 3.2 liter Volvo Inline 6 they better offer a manual.

july sucked at my dealership. I'm actually the leading salesman with 9 (hyundai). ugh, if it wasn't for all the used cars i've sold, my month would have been really bad.

Absolutely on the minidisc. I have a nice little minidisc recorder. Does a nice job but the things have disappeared. Fortunately a friend of mine is an engineer at a big NY radio station and gave me a ton of blank discs.

Those that mentioned JVC and the longer time available on VHS get prizes. You are correct. JVC bought the complete licensing rights from Sony and then proceeded to license to all comers.

VHS got the longer tapes and such because people had an interest in furthering the technology. Another comparable thing happened when 8 tracks and cassettes became popular. Choosing an 8 track at that time was a reasonable decision. Of course the technology for 8 tracks didn't move while cassettes got better and better.

Of course now cassettes are obsolete so you can put them with your VHS tapes - right next to your 8 tracks.

Seriously you think that is complicated? It is very easy to use.

Maybe if explain it that will be easier.

    image

The paddle at the bottom is the electronic park brake. You pull it to set it and push down with your foot on the foot brake to release it. Very easy to use and the message center in the instrument cluster will remind you if you forget to push the brake pedal down.

Starting from the top you have the Big knob there. That is terrain response which is a patented system from Land Rover. No one has anything like it on any other car in the world.

Remember Land Rover is a little company that sold a little over 200,000 vehicles to the whole world last year which was a record. They sell vehicles in 170 plus countries many of which do not even use western characters so you can't have English for everything.

Terrain response is like point and click four wheel drive. You look out the window see what terrain you are on and select the mode using the knob. The first setting is General mode for everyday driving. The second one going from left to right is Snow/Grass/Gravel. The Third is Mud and Ruts. The fourth is Sand Mode. The last setting is Rock Crawl.

You turn the knob and the various algorithms programed into the cars computers make you look like a pro.

The toggle on the left controls the air suspension. Press the down arrow to lower the car and the up arrow to raise it. Pretty darn easy.

The button in the middle with the car going down hill in Red is Hill Descent Control or HDC. Almost everyone has a version of that now but Land Rover invented it back in the mid 90s.

The last toggle on the right is the High and Low range Transfer case control. Just like low range in any other vehicle you must be in neutral going below a certain speed to engage low range. The message center in the instrument cluster will tell you to engage neutral or to slow down if you need to.

What could be simpler then that?

In a LR3 or a Range Rover I can take a complete novice to off-roading and make them look like a superstar in one day of instruction. Assuming of course they can listen to instructions and don't mind being yelled at if they make a mistake.

well, he agrred to a price,on a car, in person.Paid a deposit, signed a buyers order, left a credit ap. Then called later yesterday to say his business partner had been shopping and we had to match the price. The low price. The really, really, low price.

I'm suprised at that. I think it's a stunning car. Would be my first pick.
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
My customers find it easy and in practice, dynamic. I have actually had phone calls from people driving in the snow who are amazed at how great the car performs - and how simple to go to snow mode.

Working on #10 for July - already made more $ than I did on 14 last month

I guess the deal is never done, even on a Porsche until it's delivered. Would you guys call this grinding, or perhaps just a competitive market?

You own a rental property .......

Poor analogy as what you described is someone renting and what we are discussing is someone buying. In the so called "straw purchase" the car is actually bought by person 'A' and that person owns the car. Person 'A' can assign ownership rights to the car to someone else as person 'A' is the owner.

In your example you are not the owner but a renter, as such you do have ownership rights assigned to you but you do not have ownership of the property. Rental leases do have stipulations to what you have mentioned.

Now with the car loan most do not have limitations on what you can or cannot do. Basically a car loan is you renting money, the loan basically stipulates that you will pay back a certain amount at certain times and that the car is their secured interest. Most, maybe all, stipulate that the property be insured to protect them from a loss. Beyond that a auto loan does not limit how the property being bought is used (like a rental agreement would).

In short your loan agreement is that you will take the money and apply it to the purchase of the car and use that car as security for the loan. It does not restrict your use of that car.

I think it's more of a symbol issue, a simple "Terrain Control" lever labeled "normal", "snow", "sand", "mud", "rocks", would be infinitely superior and wouldn't require an explanation.

I doubt if most owners could explain away those icons a few months after they bought it, maybe they would guess 3 out of 5.

If Americans weren't dumb they could but Americans can only thing in English.

The rest of the world has no problem with the symbols.

There is a Snowflake duh that is snow.

The next symbol has a big tree and a car driving through obvious ruts.

The next one is sand there is a freaking cactus on it.

The last one is a car driving on a boulder for crying out loud.

Oh and again whenever you turn the terrain response knob the message center in the instrument cluster says what mode you are in. It will say Snow/Grass/Gravel or Sand or whatever depending on the mode you select.

The 4x4 display on the nav screen will do the same thing.

I have worked with some beautiful sales people but the best I ever worked for was in her sixties and we will just say... Not so attractive... This woman sold 30 Cadillacs a month with out blinking... simply amazing!!!! But the one that is still tops in my book... Will be mrs Doc on october 20th... Now do looks help yes but does not sell in itself... I had a very attractive female that i was incharge of training and I was going over the Occupant classifications system in a Camry.. I said Rita.. The OCS Determines the.. and she interupted me with.. I have kids I know what it does... So I continued I said... you are so pretty.. please let me just get through this I promise not to make it to long... She smiled and said "OK" And i continued" Now Rita The OCS in the Camry is one of the most sophisticated in the industry it determines through the sensors on the mirror exactly how attractive the Passeger is and based on that it will deploy the air bag with a amount of force appropriate for that person" She then said" Wel I guess we should be OK then" "now Rita are you flirting with me  " she listened as i continued to explain that with ugly people the force is a lot greater than it would be for her or myself..but her daughter would be in trouble" Rita said"yeah I agree :surprise: " after going throught the Safety systems We went in and she got an Up.... About an hour later she came in and said "He wants to talk to a manager" "Why Rita?" I responded "Well we were going to go for a test drive and when i looked at his wife I told him it would be better for her to ride in the back seat and I told her about the OCS" :surprise: I went out and apologized to the customer for a joke that went horribly wrong and bought them Lunch while we got thier car ready! 6 months later i walk in to my first Finance job and the first deal I have is good old Ritas... Still Dumb as can be

I do... in fact I can offer policies of 5 years 100000 additional miles for vehicles with up to 150000 miles. I will say that the number of peopl who call looking to get a warranty because that vehicle with 60000 miles on it has a problem and it is cheaper to buy a warranty then get it fixed amazes me... Just five minutes ago I had a guy with a $1300 tear down bill to get to a seal that cost $13 to replace... Then however much to put it back together... His warranty cost from me.. BB Wear and Tear and Seals and Gaskets included 5 years 100K $1756. Will every one need it ... no.... Do i get them Yes

Really, would you do so for a Hyundai thats approaching 150k miles? There is nothing wrong with it but if you can warranty it to nearly 250K miles it might be worth it as the older it gets the more likely it will need something.

But then again we are planning on replacing it in three years anyway.
