:confuse: Sorry to hear about your experience Mike. What I don't understand is why were you looking at an Altima or a Tundra? Two totally different vehicles. I could see an Altima , Accord, and Camry, or Tundra, Silverado, or F-150.
Reminds me of the couple I assisted on Saturday. They wanted to test drive a RAV4, a Prius, and a Hybrid Camry. I obliged with the Rav and we only looked at a Prius that was already sold, we were also out of hybrid Camrys. So they end up loving the RAV4. I went for the close and they tell me they have a 24 hour rule. Think over the purchase for 24 hours then make a decision.
I said "We're open tomorrow so if you decide you want the car give me a call since I'm off." Then I tried to get their address and phone number and guess what? They were winter birds from Florida traveling in their motor home staying at a local campground. Too bad I didn't see the plates on their Cherokee otherwise I would have run the other way  Just kidding, I still have hope that they will come back as they told me they were staying here for two weeks. (holding my breath)!

I don't have any patience for people like that. I will launch them in a minute. Most of the time they are bluffing so I call their bluff. "Oh yeah? have you signed the papers yet? No? well you better hurry before they change their mind." then they go "Well what can you do?" :confuse: "I already gave you my price."

Last night was a special evening. We don't get customers like these often so you learn to appreciate them.
It was right before sundown when a 2000 Toyota Solara pulls into the lot. I standing there with two other sales guys and I see the car had our dealership license plate holders. "Hmm, I think I sold this guy this car." I say to the guys. "Go ahead and take him, you were out here first." says one of my compadres.
A older gentleman (older than me) gets out of the car with a folder full of paper work. (Oh no! probably an engineer!) :P but NO!
I greet him and he tells me with a big smile: "I'm here to buy a car." to which I reply: "Well that's great you're in the right place as we sell cars here.!" He laughs and I introduce myself and give him a business car. I then go into investigation mode and he tells me he's wants to look at a 4runner and a Highlander. We walk the lot to where these two vehicles are and then I ask him what he's going to be using the vehicle for. "Just for daily commuting and taking the family out." he tells me. "Do you ever go off road? if not then a 2wd will be just fine." I tell him. As we stand there looking at both vehicles I tell him about the Highlander being on a car chassis and the 4runner on a truck chassis so the Highlander will have a nicer ride. He tells me to show him a Limited and we walk back behind the building where we have a lot of Hl's and 4rnrs. As we are walking by the Highlanders a light blue one catches his eye. This one is a base model so we keep looking at the other vehicles. "You like that blue color?" I ask him. "Yeah, it's quite pretty. My wife will like it." he replies. "Ok, let's look for a 2wd in that color." I tell him.
We keep walking the lot and come upon a Sport model in the color he likes and loaded to the gills with navi, leather, heated seats, bluetooth, moonroof etc. I have to go back to the store to get a key since it's just arrived and the keybox is not on it. I go looking for the key and its'

Since you were kind enough to call me "Young Richard", I'll confess to something. There was no elevator at the Washington Monument in 1957 when I was a teen. Promise that you won't tell jmonroe. I have him convinced that he is older than dirt. :P

To stay on topic: When I went to DC that summer, my father was driving a 1955 Buick Roadmaster. Are you ready for this? It was two tone pink and white with pink leather seats! He had ordered it for my mother whose favorite color was pink. Though it sounds gosh awful, it was actually a pretty car. The pink was a light shade. My parent's friends thought that it was beautiful. Their next car was red and white. My father loved red. In the late '60's, they remodeled their kitchen with red appliances and strawberry wallpaper. My parents were unique---never a dull moment. :D

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!! I know those people! I couldn't believe it when I read your post. I almost missed the post. I had gone back to check something and there it was. It has to be them---same car, snow birds with a motor home, etc.

He is a retired banker and ex-Army recruiter. She worked in HR with me for several years. She is a nice person, but he is a hard ball to deal with on any issue. When they first hit the road, they were pulling a Saturn wagon. They then traded for a Cherokee. They send us their travel schedule each Christmas. It is time for them to be in your area. They are heading for Indiana for the summer. They have a home there. Knowing the husband, I would be surprised if they come back to see you. Let me know if he does. BTW, if it is them, I have their telephone number. ;)

The elevator went public shortly after 1888. That makes your age
    about 131  :shades:

The elevator was the construction elevator which was converted for public use. The stairs were closed in the 70s due to vandalism of plaques on the walls of the stairs. There are 897 steps.

If you say so. We thought about counting them and we did for a while. Then we went macho and did 2 at a time for about 5 or 6 flights. That was the end of the counting unless you want to count the number of times I asked myself why I allowed myself to be talked into that torture test.

I've had a similar experience dealing with the owner of the dealership. My mother-in-law was looking for a 2-3 year old used car (Taurus or Sable). My brother-in-law knows the owner of the local Lincoln-Mercury dealership. It just so happens they got in a really nice low mileage (22,000 miles) Sable. We go over to test drive the car and the owner hands us off to the sales manager who in turn thought we would buy at any price. He insults my mother-in-laws trade and is asking a ridiculous price for the Sable. We ask to take it for a test drive but he won't let us because it hasn't been through their shop for inspection so, he drives us around the lot at 15mph. What a joke! I told him the price was too high but he refused to budge. At this point I felt it was a waste of time to even continue talking to this yahoo so we left. About a week later I found a year newer Sable with only 9,000 miles for less than the other one plus they gave us more on trade. They wanted to sell a car and they did. They treated us with respect and we appreciated that.

Hey, it was for my son and that's what he narrowed his choices down two. You're preaching to the choir Mack as I said the same thing to him, LOL.

Question for you Mack since you sell Toyotas. I myself also drive an 06 Tundra 8 cyl that does not have a key with the chip in it. I took the key for my son's Tundra, also an 06 but a 6 cyl, in to Home Depot to get a couple extras made up and the guy tells me it has a chip in it. The key doesn't look like an official Toyota key.

Is it possible that the key we have that does have a chip was simply keyed to fit the truck? I thought that all Tundras do not have the computer that requires a key with the chip in it but I could be wrong.

I can't take credit for the, "...love having written" line. I'm not sure to whom it should be attributed, but I know I picked it up from TV. As I have most of my useful knowledge! Maybe TV was my original Wikipedia...!

I've always been told that I'm a decent writer but never really did much about it. I've been working with computers for the last dozen years or so, people are surprised at my non-technical literacy. I've tried to not let my chosen field dull my Liberal Arts sensibilities!

And, now on topic-ish, I like to buy cars! To paraphrase the lovely, literate and artistic TheNEBean, "Yay for cars! And the fine folks here who fulfill the needs, wants and desires of those seeking to exchange a few magic beans for a shiny chariot of glass, steel and rubber by accepting those magic beans and handing them the keys to their dream chariot! And then slapping on a fake convertible top, pinstriping, rustproofing, Scotchgard, mud flaps festooned with Yosemite Sam, chrome spinners and gold "Special Edition Emblems" for only a few magic beans more!" You remember when theNEBean wrote this, don't y'all? ;)

As I start walking back towards the showroom my prospect follows me as he has to use the men's room.
I go look for the key in a box that has all the keys for the cars without key boxes (we ran out of keyboxes!) and wouldn't you know it, I searched and searched and the last key that I found was the one I was looking for.
We headed back to the Highlander and went on a test drive after I showed him all the features. When we got back it was almost closing time so he asked me "You want to talk price or should I come back tomorrow.?"
"Let's do it right now." I said. (You got to strike while the iron is hot!) "Are you sure? I don't want to hold you up." he responds.
As we start walking into the showroom I ask him what sites he used to do his "homework". He tells me Edmund's :) and Kbb. But since I now threw a curve ball at him he says he has to refigure the figures as he configured a Limited instead of a sport configuration. Go figure!
I told him; "No problem, that's why I wrote the options down so we can go to Edmund's and spec it out." He smiles. :)
I log on and go to the TMV section and select the vehicle we are looking at. I select the options and color with the exception of floor mats as they are not listed and the vehicle I'm selling did not come with them. "You want floor mats?" I ask. "Yes, definitely got to have those." he replies. I go to www.buyatoyota.com and look for the price of the mats. "I have to add the price of the mats to the TMV." I tell him."I understand. Can you also add a bug guard or hood protector? I do a lot of highway driving and those bugs get all over the hood." he continues. "Let's see if it's available." I reply.

I look through the accessories section and looks like a bug protector is not available yet as it is not shown.
He tells me the mats are fine and he'll look at getting the hood protector when it comes out. I add the price of the mats to the TMV and flip the sheet over so he can see it. "Can you do that price?" he asks. "You bet." I respond. "We can do the paperwork tonight or tomorrow if it's better for you." I tell him. "It is getting late, I'm sorry for keeping you here this long. What time do you want me to come by tomorrow?" he asks.
"Tomorrow is my day off but since it's the end of the month I want to put this puppy over the curb to close out the month. I do have a dentist appointment at 10 in the morning and another appointment at 4pm. How about we make it 6pm?" I ask. "That's good since I will be tied up all day. Let me give you my cell phone in case you need to get in touch with me." he pulls out a business card with his number on it and gives it to me.
I go to the sales desk and tell the manager on duty that we have a deal but he will come back the next day to pick up the vehicle and finish the paperwork.
    TO BE CONTINUED......

My issue is cars at that price should come with mats included in the price. If interested, here are extra all-weather rugged or superplush mats, but something nice but not necessarily outstanding, should be standard. Of course everybody does that to certain extent - Benz charges extra for fold-down seats, BMW doesn't have leather standard on their 3-series and (at least it was the case until recently) even 5-series and so on, cruise control is extra on many compacts, etc. Those kind of things are quite aggravating at times.

"...I am not sure what the total added value should be..."

Why should there be ANY added value for being "never titled"? 4K miles are still miles no matter who drove them. The paper is meaningless. In the end the car is worth what someone is willing to pay.

One other thing to consider. You have a choice of two identical cars. The first was driven by your neighbor, the second was shared by your whole neighborhood. Which would you rather own? That's the difference between a used car and a demo.

Absolutely! You are paying for them either way. I am sure that I paid for the mats that were in my Avalon, but it would be a whole lot different if I was looking at this 34K vehicle and I had to "tack on" an additional 200 or whatever. I could see me now... "well if you throw the mats in...." and then I become one of the customers the salespeople can't stand! ;)

" That's the difference between a used car and a demo"

Not necessarilly. The "demo" may have been a managers car that was never driven by anyone except him.

And, it really doesn't matter anyway. A 4000 mile car that has been used as a true demo and driven by many people really isn't a "lesser" car in any way.

Most people don't care and the ones who do care, shouldn't buy one of these cars.

    Nothing is ever free.

For many years, hondas didn't come with floor mats.

We automatically installed them in every car and charged the customers for them. Once in awhile we would get a really cheap customer who didn't want to pay for them and we would simply pull them out.

We would hear..." You would THINK Honda would include a lousy set of floor mats in the price of the car".

    People would whine...

So after years of telling Honda this, they simply raised the price of their cars, and installed floor mats. Good move and Toyota should do the same thing!

Floor mats are extra on all our Porsches. I delivered a 911 Turbo a week ago that was $150,000. The mats were an extra $150. :surprise:

Sorry oldfarmer, they weren't "free". You paid for them.

Well many times a carfax report will pick up when the car is brought into the country if it was an import and the VW is.

The report might also pick up when the dealer puts it out on the lot for sale and when the PDI is done. That is three right there but I have sometimes seen as many as five carfax records on a car before the record showing that it has been titled pops up.

If a car was traded from another dealer the MSO was reassigned and that could show up as well.

I agree with ‘isell’ that nothing is free but with a car that costs $150K, to then tell the customer that mats will cost him $150 (0.1% of the cost of the car) seems pretty petty on the part of Porsche to me. Just add the cost into the price of the car and be done with it. We’re talking about a Porsche here not a Hyundai. :confuse:

I’m sure if the customer said, “I want the mats free”, most salesman wouldn’t kill the deal because of this. Porsche is putting their salesman in a bad position over this penny pinching item. It would make me wonder, ‘where else are they pinching pennies’?

Floor mats aren't included with Land Rovers either but we are required to put them in all new deliveries as part of the Land Rover Way. Sales has to eat the cost of the floor mats.

Somehow something is telling me that going from $150,000 to $150,200 won't be a deal breaker. Pocket change either way. That is when you look at the whole picture. :shades:

  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Sort of but it is accounted for differently so it doesn't come out of the payable gross of the deal and doesn't effect my commission.

I hope so. I've been popping in and out of this forum now and would like to know how this one ends!

Btw, I realize someone has to absorb the cost of floor mats, nothing is free, but hasn't (and I mean no disrespect AT ALL when I say this) "...and I'll throw in the floor mats..." to sweeten or seal the deal become sort of a car cliche by now? Again, I'm not saying "free" but it would seem the cost would just be part of the car as opposed to an "option" by now?

Or are mats really that effective of a sales tool still?
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
    Not to worry....

If I could swing an 08 now I'd be tempted - especially since they are stopping production. I mentioned 04 because it was the first year they built them as convertibles at the factory. Of course I have one of those ASC special Celicas that got imported with roofs and then got them chopped off and it's fine. My wife would like one. In fact she'd like mine which is why the wandering eye.

This must be a new Toyota thing - stop making cars with any fun in them. First the kill the Supra, then the Celica and MR2.... Now there will be no Toyota with a top that comes down.

Just poking around at the moment. Don't take me too seriously....

On the other hand there's some guy an hour from here selling a 92 Celica convertible with only 78K on the odo. Stick shift to boot.....
