It is a donatation. Many people just handed my kid cash money instead of the popcorn. Then there are those who said they couldn't eat popcorn, were allergic to it, or it gave them hives, etc. I trained my kid to work in the concept that the high cost was a donation in essence--I am training him to be an effective and pleasant car salesperson. He was highest in his troop for $ sales. He made it to Eagle.

Could be. The service writer initally asked if I would like the $9.99 tire rotation that was included on the oil change coupon. He was all jittery... like he was close to making bonus money or something. I told him I bought my tires at Goodyear and they have lifetime rotation. I guess he gave up after that.
They probably guessed (correctly) that you had already bought your own parts at some discount store
Well, actually I bought the filter about a month before, at the dealership. I bought it with a $25 gift card the dealership mailed me for Xmas. Hmmm... seems to be a pattern here with the coupons. The service writer did ask for my phone number and looked up my vehicle history information. He gave up on the upsell after looking at the computer monitor. I guess he thinks I'm one of those cheap coupon guys... who never buys anything without a coupon. How dare he!
Will the stimulus checks do much for selling cars? A friend has started shopping and wonders if things will slow down enabling him to shop better with cash or will cars move better and he won't get as good a deal due to the stimulation checks.
To me, the checks should be called dollar devaluation checks, or inflation checks, or oil price increase checks.

You cheated. When I was in the Navy I was stationed at Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center about 60 miles south of D.C., in Maryland. One weekend 4 of us went to D.C. I remember running up the steps to the top. Two of us made it without stopping but we slowed to a snails pace. Got to the top, really appreciated the breeze and didn't even think of walking back down, we took the elevator. Had to wait a while but it was worth it. Talk about being young and dumb.
First was at the National Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport.
Went there last summer when we went to a nephews wedding in Reston Virginia. Saw it years ago but it was nothing like it is now. That Enola Gay sure does make you stop and think but it kept thousands of our guys alive. I highly recommend it.

How much would you take in to consideration for a "never titled" demo depreciation?
The Nissan dealer had a 2007 Quest SE demo on the lot w/ 4k miles on it.
I consider anything with 4K miles on it, a used car. In 89' my brother and I negotiated for a used car price for my Mother when she bought a demo Bonneville with almost 4500 miles. Yeah, we heard the salesman moan that it was a new/never titled car but when we got up to leave he went to his manager who said OK to our price.

You could buy a 2008 for the same price. I just checked the incentives for Quests and in my area New England The dealers have all been paid out.... Which means to you that $35k is way to much money... Tell them you would buy a new one for that!!! $30,000 sounds reasonable to me. For crying out loud the 09's will be here in 5 months. If they send it to auction they are not going to get that much. The quest is a great vehicle but I wouldn't pay more than $30,000... FOr the record I work for a Nissan dealer.
I would like to know how they are breaking down the deal. Call the sales person and ask what the break down is MSRP, Invoice, What there discount is under invoice... it should be like $800 and than find out what the pay out incentives were... DOn't say it like that or what ever say it like that... But find out what the rebate was.
If they don't want to move buy a new one. In NE area there is a $3500 rebate on 2008's. You could easily buy a 2008 for $34,000 ...
$35K is way too high for that van, IMO. Here in South Carolina, Nissanusa.com shows a $3500 rebate for an 08. You stated that a comparable 08 msrp's at 39,500. That reduces your price to 36K on the 2008 before you even begin negotiations. Your dealer wants 35k for an 07 with 4000 miles. :confuse: The 2009's can't be too far away at this point -- making this van almost 2 model years old.
The van has "never been titled".......OK, so what? This still amounts to a used vehicle. I can not think of any reason why the fact that it has never been titled adds 2 cents to its value. Does it really matter that dealership personnel have driven the van for 4k miles vs. a neighbor from down the street that might have traded it in? never been titled = red herring.
Several folks have given good advice. Move on to something else or dig in and negotiate a much lower price. I have read in these forums and in other places that demos are often the worst value on the lot. Not enough discount for what is truly a USED car.

All of you guys have been very helpful, and have confirmed my suspicions about the "never titled" issue. It's just one of those things that you just can't really "research" on Edmunds as to whether or not it really "adds value" or not--at least I couldn't find it until I asked here. Now I know and glad I asked.
And the dealers she's working with are in the Chicago area, so no one in the NE will be losing any sales!
I will pass the information along and make sure it's put to good use so everyone--dealer included gets a good deal I have a feeling she'll have an '08 in her possession very soon!
The lease cash and mktg support are two (2) different items and depending upon what region you are in can or cannot be combined. Usually they can though. The marketing support is also known as "trunk money". Lease cash can ONLY be used when leasing and usually it has to be with the captive (ie: MB Financial) As for the dealer contribution, that is NON negotiable, it is what the dealer NEEDS to contribute to participate and get the lease price at the stated/quoted price.
If you are looking at a national ad, that is THE price based on THOSE terms (ie: super preferred credit, about 4.5K down (includes all fees), 10K yr and a specific car with limited options)
Good luck getting a price lower than (ie: behind or in back of) invoice.
We usually only grind down to invoice .. after that we would prefer to walk/broom/fire the buyer.
Mercedes have VALUE and we build valve behind the star.
BTW ... did you know that the CLS is based off the "E" class platform - most of the parts on a CLS are the same as on an "E" class. In addition, next yr (late 09/10) the "E" class is undergoing a major renovation.
I really enjoyed reading about your trip. It was a well written piece, and brought back fond memories. The wife and I have been thinking about going again. You have motivated me. Speaking of emotional moments, have you been to Ground Zero? As I read the individual stories and looked at the children's drawings, I had to keep wiping my eyes. I remember running/walking/racing others in my high school class to the top. I don't think they had a elevator then. I don't recall any problem with slowing down. Of course we were barely 18!!! That was a while ago and lot of youthful fitness ago.

I don't think it will do anything for the car biz. A check for $600 that a single person get will not make the difference between an affordable payment and not affordable. Even a family of 3 getting a $1500 check won't do it.
I think it will help the CC companies with people paying off debt and the smaller ticket items like electronics and clothing.
I am getting a whopping $1 check. Yes, that wasn’t a typo, one dollar. I don’t know if I should frame this check and keep it to remind me of the wonderful Bush era, or indorse it, and send it back to Bush with a thank you note.

Back in the 90s my dad used to get checks like that from his royalties on old oil fields he prospected. Most of these fields were low production high cost areas so very little if any oil was pumped out. With oil prices so low he might get a check for 35 cents or something but he also got the records for his partners checks. The check would come with a booklet detailing everything and the booklet was so think it usually had two or three dollars of postage attached. :confuse:
Sounds like it was a great trip. I agree, everyone should visit our Capitol at least once, and take your kids if you have some. We visited family in Baltimore this past summer, and took a day trip into DC. My reflective moment occurred while watching my girls play around the fountain at the Capitol building. At 3 and 5 they already have a basic understanding of what happens there. By the time they can vote I want them to understand it thoroughly.
Oh, and they loved riding the Metro.
To keep this on topic - we bought some t-shirts while we were there. (you know, sales, yay sales)

On the monument - I'm pretty sure they haven't let you use the stairs in years.
When I was 15 we took the elevator up and the stairs down. My calves ached for a day after that. If I tried it today they'd probably run me to the hospital!

I know when we took a school trip to D.C. in the early 90s they would let you use the stairs and went all the way up and down on them. I remember there are some neat bits of stone work and paintings on some of the staircase landings. I don't think they let you use the stairs anymore for security reasons.

We have cars on the lot that 4000 - 5000 miles on them. They are managers demos. They have never been titled. Now what that means is what ever incentives from the manufactuurer are available you get them. Special financing or rebates.
Now if there was a trade in with the same amount of miles... all things being equal. You would not qualify for the special financing or rebates. You would have to use the standard rates available
That is the difference.
On this paticular vehicle( 07 quest) The dealer has already been paid for any rebates at that time and the dealer is stuck with the car. The benefit about it not being titled only means that your warranty starts from the date of purchase. Not the year.

On that beautiful, sunny morning, they were having coffee on the balcony of my great aunt's high in the sky condo in Forest Hills, Queens. My Dad was taping my Mom as she lounged, and in the distance were the smoking towers. At the beginning of the tape, they weren't sure what was causing all that smoke. Unfortunately, for all of humanity, the story unfolded all too quickly. I still have that video quite implanted in my head. As well as a fervent hope that there is a special place in Hell...

Just had a really bad experience and a very good one. I was in the market for a vehicle for my son, looking at either a Nissan Altima or Toyota Tundra in the 05-06 model years. We found Universal Nissan here in Orlando had several vehicles in their online inventory slightly higher than our price, so we decided to make that our first stop. My son also played lacrosse in HS with the owner's son so we thought we'd get a good deal.
We get to the dealer and was greeted nicely and the salesman asked if we've been working with anyone and my son mentions his friend, the owner's son, who was off that day. They call the guy on the phone and my son talks to him so they send out one of the Sales managers to work with us.
We try out several vehicles and go inside to run the numbers. Salesman comes back several thousand higher than their online prices. When we mention this, the salesman plays dumb and tries to get around it. They bring out another sales manager and he basically says they're not responsible for their advertiser's mistake. Ha, yeah right.
So we leave, pretty ticked off, looks like they just didn't want our business. I'm wondering if bringing the owner's son in to it, complicated things. Maybe there's some kind of animosity between them.
We go to the next dealer, a small time guy who gets everything at the local Manheim auction, we had already run the Carfax reports, and ended up buying a Tundra paying his asking price (I tried lower) in Autotrader.com, which was already lower than the other dealer. I paid $12900 plus $475 dealer fee plus TTL for an 06 Tundra SR5 access cab V6 with 30K miles and plenty of warranty left, so we're happy with the purchase. Even with the dealer fee, the price was lower than Edmunds trade in.

One dollar? The bright side, given the formula for calculating this governmental largesse, would be that you appear to have made a pretty penny in '07. So, you should be buying a new car from one of the salesfolks here!

A new car a friend wants to buy has 4 carfax reports on it he was told by the insurance agent when he called to get an estimate for the insurance cost for the VW.
Why would an alleged new car have 4 carfax reports... They don't have access to the reports, they just can tell there are carfax reports and how many entries.

It’s very coincidental that you brought this up because the post I recently made about my brother and I negotiating for a demo Bonneville for our Mother in 89’ was close to what you had.
A while back (probably a year ago) on one of these boards I told the whole story about going to this MEGA dealer that sells everything GM. We went to him because my nephew played ball with the son of one of the sales manager’s and my brother got to know him from going to the baseball games. The SM took us on the test drive and when my Mother agreed she liked it, he turned us over to a greenpea. :surprise: Which resulted in several back and forth sessions with the greenpea going to this SM several times. The only thing that brought this marathon to an end was when we got up to leave.
As they were prepping the car (the place was closing at the time) I asked this SM friend why all the game playing and he said, “most buyers don’t feel they’re getting a good deal until we give them our third offer”. :confuse:
So much for knowing someone in the biz.

This place is a mega dealership. They've also got a Hyundai dealership right next door. There were just so many vehicles. I still am totally miffed at them not honoring their internet price. They were just so blatant about it as well. Between this and another bad experience with a different Nissan dealer years ago, both over a used vehicle, I doubt I'll ever own a Nissan.
I just had a telephone prospect last week that I got managment to do a big looser of a deal. The customer told me he would be in Sunday. He called me Sunday and told me he found someone to beat it by $200 and asked if I would meet that price. I said no and good luck but I don't think they are going to do it. Well Last night... Tuesday he calls me up angry and says they lied to him. Which I figured was going to happen. We were loosing $1200 hard money from net,net... But we need to sell cars. So long story short he calls me back as I was saying and says he wants to buy it from us. I say no problem but the car you wanted sold. Now he wants me to locate one on the last day of the month. As we call around every one is asking "yeah is this car for that Joey guy"... Meaning he has been calling them and working them. As it turns out he would get a price and call every other dealer to see if they would beat it.
Anyway So I tell him I will get the car today for a extra $500. As I am faxing the incvoices back and forth he calls me to tell me someone just beat my deal agian and if I don't match it he is going there. Well he all I can you tell you is he isn't buying from us and to tell you the truth I am not sure if he will get his deal.
I am not sure if everyone understood what I just typed... all I can tell you is that it was a lot frustrating work
Seems like an awful lot of time wasted on his part going back and forth between dealerships, I wonder why he just didn't take the best deal and be done with it.

No I didn't sell him a car... I was in the middle of faxing invoices for swap on the car he wanted when he called and said he was going with someone else for the second time. I just OK once again and good luck. Cancelled the swap. But it is just a pain in the [non-permissible content removed] to go through doing swaps and than calling the dealer back to cancel. Ya know what I mean? You call leave a message for the swap guy. They call you back. He asks for a car that you can't give than says alright I'll call you back with another car... Blah,blah,blah
Anyway I am not selling him a car unless he comes in today and says he'll take the one I have in stock. I can understand getting I am told They are buying somewhere else once. But to have it done twice is a pain in the [non-permissible content removed]. When I am the one in the first place who explained how everything works... even if it was over the phone :mad:

I've told stories here before, from back when I sold cars years ago in another city, for 4 months. Now, enough time has passed that I can tell some of the story of working for another dealer for only 2 days!
When my wife and I relocated, she had a good job lined up, and I had none. So I went out looking several different places in different fields. My previous experience selling cars had been OK, I had only left because I was lured away by a former boss who wanted me to come back and work for him in a much greater role, in sales. As I was looking around at all options in the new city, I got hired on at the local Ford store, on the spot. It was part of a big chain, and they tried to act very high volume although they really were not that much bigger than my first store. Maybe 300 cars a month, but too many salespeople to count.
The experience at this dealer was completely different right from the start. In the interview, the hiring manager explained they have two types of salesmen, "Consultants" who get full share (25% and up) commissions, and "Representatives" who only got 10% and had to work with a Consultant to close deals. He said everyone starts as a Rep and has to work their way up. I knew I wouldn't be able to survive long on 10% of every deal, so I tried to negotiate with the manager right there. He even played the "I have to check with my boss" game, with me, the prospective employee. Eventually, I heard "Great news! My manager says that because you have previous experience, you can start as a Consultant! We don't usually do this." Weird.
It was all down hill from there. First day on the job started at 8AM and happened to be the day of a big sales meeting. Everyone had to project how may cars they'd sell in the new month, under great criticism from the general manager. Management was really giving one guy a hard time, he hadn't sold many cars the month before, and they were telling everyone that it was because of a nasty divorce. The poor guy didn't think they were funny at all, and kept honestly saying so, but they kept right on harassing him about it. "A whole month? Get over it already," "Channel your anger into closing some deals!", "Are you going to have another lousy excuse this month?" and so on.
When the meeting was finally over, they decided to call me out to see what I could do. I was volunteered to demonstrate an F-150 to the entire staff. It was my first day, and it had been 2 years since I was in sales, but I talked about the boxed frame rails, low end tourque, all the features and benefits. I think it went OK, didn't hear anything positive or negative from anyone, even the managers.
After that, no one would take the time to show or tell me anything I wanted to know. My team leader, the sales manager who had interviewed me, who now wanted to be called "Chief Slapahoe, cause every five minutes I slap a hoe," just told me to wing it. I went out on the floor not even knowing where the blank paperwork was should I need it. Had there been any buyers, I would not have known what do do with one, meaning how to go the whole process and give the customer the impression that I had the slightest idea what I was doing. At least I had observed where the sales tower and key machine were.
The day went slow. One of the managers introduced himself to me and learning that I had no children, told me to buy a picture frame from Wal-Mart, one of the ones that comes with a sample photo. "Use the picture to close deals, it really works." I tried to play it off as a joke, but he was dead serious. "We do what it takes." Wow.
At my previous job we had rotating shifts, each day one team stayed to close and one went home at 5. At this place it seemed like everyone was expected to work bell to bell, 9 to 9. One of my only "ups" wanted to see a "BRAND NEW" Ranger the store had advertised on a billboard for $9,979. Of course, we had nothing even close. You can imagine how that went.
Nearing the end of the second day, after about 23 hours on the job in 2 days, I walked up to my manager and quit. Back when I'd left my previous dealership, I had gone straight to the GM, who had seemed like I was wasting his time. So this time I just told my manager and left. He tried to talk me into staying, but everything I had seen and heard so far just gave me a really bad feeling. I'm an honest guy, and like to do business a certain way, and just didn't feel like I was fitting in on these front lines.
Here's where it got interesting. The next day, while back on the job hunt, I got a call from the General Manager, and this was the first time he had spoken to me. "So, I heard you had a problem here," he said. "No sir, I just decided that a sales position in your organization was not for me," I responded. "What? Why?" he demanded. Instead of telling him that his dealership was ten times sleazier than the other one I had worked for, I just said I wanted to be in more of a customer service oriented role. After a long speech about how much they value customer service, and while I was still wondering what this was all about, he stated that he wished I'd have seen him before I left, he'd have told me about another job in the dealership. He wanted me to come back in for an interview.
Curiosity was killing me, so I went back in. He explained that he had just lost his "Personalization Manager" and said that if I read the newspaper, I would see why, but that he couldn't go into it. Evidently the guy had some major personal issues? I never found out exactly, although I really wanted to know. The position came with a nice office, was "Quasi-Management" and would involve working with customers who have bought or were about to buy, and who were interested in any kind of dealer installed accessory. The position would also entail coordinating inventory with parts dept. and installation with service, plus generate some managerial type reports on vehicle sales for the GM. It was salary plus commission but we never got to exact figures. He wanted me to come back later in the week when thier corporate computer guy would be there to talk further about my MS Excel knowledge, and then we'd "Iron out all the details."
Well, during the interim, I heard back from a different company in another field, non-sales related, which I had interviewed for several weeks before. I had the other job, and it payed OK, so I took it. I called the GM back to explain and apologize, but as soon as he heard I wasn't coming back, he just hung up on me! Which pretty much confirmed (again) my gut feeling about the place anyway.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I still wonder how the job would have been. I think I'd have rather enjoyed the job itself, and possibly would have made quite a bit of money. I know many customers ask for things to be added to their cars. In a big dealership, what would you guess the salary of a "personalization manager" be? Would it have been a good job? Thoughts?

Because more than likely the buyer didn't know what a good deal was because he didn't do his research. He probably thought you just keep working one dealer against another and the well never runs dry.

It varies. The "Friends and Family" discount is approximately 1% below invoice. The Chrysler employee discount is around 5% below invoice.
If you give me a specific model I will post the MSRP and discount price for each of the plans.

The MSRP for the 08 Quest w/ the same options as the 07 demo is 39500. What do think a fair price would be to negotiate for the 07? Again, used 07s are selling for 30k, but this one has never been titled so I don't really know what that is worth? 2k? 4k? 0k?

It is a donatation. Many people just handed my kid cash money instead of the popcorn. Then there are those who said they couldn't eat popcorn, were allergic to it, or it gave them hives, etc. I trained my kid to work in the concept that the high cost was a donation in essence--I am training him to be an effective and pleasant car salesperson. He was highest in his troop for $ sales. He made it to Eagle.

Could be. The service writer initally asked if I would like the $9.99 tire rotation that was included on the oil change coupon. He was all jittery... like he was close to making bonus money or something. I told him I bought my tires at Goodyear and they have lifetime rotation. I guess he gave up after that.

Well, actually I bought the filter about a month before, at the dealership. I bought it with a $25 gift card the dealership mailed me for Xmas. Hmmm... seems to be a pattern here with the coupons. The service writer did ask for my phone number and looked up my vehicle history information. He gave up on the upsell after looking at the computer monitor. I guess he thinks I'm one of those cheap coupon guys... who never buys anything without a coupon. How dare he!
If that's all it's going to cost she can buy two of them. I've been set up for a lot more that the cost of an "Economy Stimulus Check".

You cheated. When I was in the Navy I was stationed at Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center about 60 miles south of D.C., in Maryland. One weekend 4 of us went to D.C. I remember running up the steps to the top. Two of us made it without stopping but we slowed to a snails pace. Got to the top, really appreciated the breeze and didn't even think of walking back down, we took the elevator. Had to wait a while but it was worth it. Talk about being young and dumb.
First was at the National Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport.
Went there last summer when we went to a nephews wedding in Reston Virginia. Saw it years ago but it was nothing like it is now. That Enola Gay sure does make you stop and think but it kept thousands of our guys alive. I highly recommend it.

The Nissan dealer had a 2007 Quest SE demo on the lot w/ 4k miles on it.
I consider anything with 4K miles on it, a used car. In 89' my brother and I negotiated for a used car price for my Mother when she bought a demo Bonneville with almost 4500 miles. Yeah, we heard the salesman moan that it was a new/never titled car but when we got up to leave he went to his manager who said OK to our price.
That's what I did, now it's your turn.

You could buy a 2008 for the same price. I just checked the incentives for Quests and in my area New England The dealers have all been paid out.... Which means to you that $35k is way to much money... Tell them you would buy a new one for that!!! $30,000 sounds reasonable to me. For crying out loud the 09's will be here in 5 months. If they send it to auction they are not going to get that much. The quest is a great vehicle but I wouldn't pay more than $30,000... FOr the record I work for a Nissan dealer.
I would like to know how they are breaking down the deal. Call the sales person and ask what the break down is MSRP, Invoice, What there discount is under invoice... it should be like $800 and than find out what the pay out incentives were... DOn't say it like that or what ever say it like that... But find out what the rebate was.
If they don't want to move buy a new one. In NE area there is a $3500 rebate on 2008's. You could easily buy a 2008 for $34,000 ...

The van has "never been titled".......OK, so what? This still amounts to a used vehicle. I can not think of any reason why the fact that it has never been titled adds 2 cents to its value. Does it really matter that dealership personnel have driven the van for 4k miles vs. a neighbor from down the street that might have traded it in? never been titled = red herring.
Several folks have given good advice. Move on to something else or dig in and negotiate a much lower price. I have read in these forums and in other places that demos are often the worst value on the lot. Not enough discount for what is truly a USED car.

Lease cash can ONLY be used when leasing and usually it has to be with the captive (ie: MB Financial)
As for the dealer contribution, that is NON negotiable, it is what the dealer NEEDS to contribute to participate and get the lease price at the stated/quoted price.
If you are looking at a national ad, that is THE price based on THOSE terms (ie: super preferred credit, about 4.5K down (includes all fees), 10K yr and a specific car with limited options)
Good luck getting a price lower than (ie: behind or in back of) invoice.
We usually only grind down to invoice .. after that we would prefer to walk/broom/fire the buyer.
Mercedes have VALUE and we build valve behind the star.
BTW ... did you know that the CLS is based off the "E" class platform - most of the parts on a CLS are the same as on an "E" class.
In addition, next yr (late 09/10) the "E" class is undergoing a major renovation.

I remember running/walking/racing others in my high school class to the top. I don't think they had a elevator then. I don't recall any problem with slowing down. Of course we were barely 18!!! That was a while ago and lot of youthful fitness ago.

I am getting a whopping $1 check. Yes, that wasn’t a typo, one dollar. I don’t know if I should frame this check and keep it to remind me of the wonderful Bush era, or indorse it, and send it back to Bush with a thank you note.

Back in the 90s my dad used to get checks like that from his royalties on old oil fields he prospected. Most of these fields were low production high cost areas so very little if any oil was pumped out. With oil prices so low he might get a check for 35 cents or something but he also got the records for his partners checks. The check would come with a booklet detailing everything and the booklet was so think it usually had two or three dollars of postage attached. :confuse:
Oh, and they loved riding the Metro.

When I was 15 we took the elevator up and the stairs down. My calves ached for a day after that. If I tried it today they'd probably run me to the hospital!

We have cars on the lot that 4000 - 5000 miles on them. They are managers demos. They have never been titled. Now what that means is what ever incentives from the manufactuurer are available you get them. Special financing or rebates.
Now if there was a trade in with the same amount of miles... all things being equal.
You would not qualify for the special financing or rebates. You would have to use the standard rates available
That is the difference.
On this paticular vehicle( 07 quest) The dealer has already been paid for any rebates at that time and the dealer is stuck with the car. The benefit about it not being titled only means that your warranty starts from the date of purchase. Not the year.

We get to the dealer and was greeted nicely and the salesman asked if we've been working with anyone and my son mentions his friend, the owner's son, who was off that day. They call the guy on the phone and my son talks to him so they send out one of the Sales managers to work with us.
We try out several vehicles and go inside to run the numbers. Salesman comes back several thousand higher than their online prices. When we mention this, the salesman plays dumb and tries to get around it. They bring out another sales manager and he basically says they're not responsible for their advertiser's mistake. Ha, yeah right.
So we leave, pretty ticked off, looks like they just didn't want our business. I'm wondering if bringing the owner's son in to it, complicated things. Maybe there's some kind of animosity between them.
We go to the next dealer, a small time guy who gets everything at the local Manheim auction, we had already run the Carfax reports, and ended up buying a Tundra paying his asking price (I tried lower) in Autotrader.com, which was already lower than the other dealer. I paid $12900 plus $475 dealer fee plus TTL for an 06 Tundra SR5 access cab V6 with 30K miles and plenty of warranty left, so we're happy with the purchase. Even with the dealer fee, the price was lower than Edmunds trade in.
Anyone think bringing the owner's son in to the picture made things go wrong for me at the other dealer? The Altima was our first choice.

Why would an alleged new car have 4 carfax reports... They don't have access to the reports, they just can tell there are carfax reports and how many entries.

It’s very coincidental that you brought this up because the post I recently made about my brother and I negotiating for a demo Bonneville for our Mother in 89’ was close to what you had.
A while back (probably a year ago) on one of these boards I told the whole story about going to this MEGA dealer that sells everything GM. We went to him because my nephew played ball with the son of one of the sales manager’s and my brother got to know him from going to the baseball games. The SM took us on the test drive and when my Mother agreed she liked it, he turned us over to a greenpea. :surprise: Which resulted in several back and forth sessions with the greenpea going to this SM several times. The only thing that brought this marathon to an end was when we got up to leave.
As they were prepping the car (the place was closing at the time) I asked this SM friend why all the game playing and he said, “most buyers don’t feel they’re getting a good deal until we give them our third offer”. :confuse:
So much for knowing someone in the biz.

This place is a mega dealership. They've also got a Hyundai dealership right next door. There were just so many vehicles. I still am totally miffed at them not honoring their internet price. They were just so blatant about it as well. Between this and another bad experience with a different Nissan dealer years ago, both over a used vehicle, I doubt I'll ever own a Nissan.

As I am faxing the incvoices back and forth he calls me to tell me someone just beat my deal agian and if I don't match it he is going there. Well he all I can you tell you is he isn't buying from us and to tell you the truth I am not sure if he will get his deal.
I am not sure if everyone understood what I just typed... all I can tell you is that it was a lot frustrating work

No I didn't sell him a car... I was in the middle of faxing invoices for swap on the car he wanted when he called and said he was going with someone else for the second time. I just OK once again and good luck. Cancelled the swap. But it is just a pain in the [non-permissible content removed] to go through doing swaps and than calling the dealer back to cancel. Ya know what I mean? You call leave a message for the swap guy. They call you back. He asks for a car that you can't give than says alright I'll call you back with another car... Blah,blah,blah
Anyway I am not selling him a car unless he comes in today and says he'll take the one I have in stock. I can understand getting I am told They are buying somewhere else once. But to have it done twice is a pain in the [non-permissible content removed]. When I am the one in the first place who explained how everything works... even if it was over the phone :mad:

When my wife and I relocated, she had a good job lined up, and I had none. So I went out looking several different places in different fields. My previous experience selling cars had been OK, I had only left because I was lured away by a former boss who wanted me to come back and work for him in a much greater role, in sales. As I was looking around at all options in the new city, I got hired on at the local Ford store, on the spot. It was part of a big chain, and they tried to act very high volume although they really were not that much bigger than my first store. Maybe 300 cars a month, but too many salespeople to count.
The experience at this dealer was completely different right from the start. In the interview, the hiring manager explained they have two types of salesmen, "Consultants" who get full share (25% and up) commissions, and "Representatives" who only got 10% and had to work with a Consultant to close deals. He said everyone starts as a Rep and has to work their way up. I knew I wouldn't be able to survive long on 10% of every deal, so I tried to negotiate with the manager right there. He even played the "I have to check with my boss" game, with me, the prospective employee. Eventually, I heard "Great news! My manager says that because you have previous experience, you can start as a Consultant! We don't usually do this." Weird.
It was all down hill from there. First day on the job started at 8AM and happened to be the day of a big sales meeting. Everyone had to project how may cars they'd sell in the new month, under great criticism from the general manager. Management was really giving one guy a hard time, he hadn't sold many cars the month before, and they were telling everyone that it was because of a nasty divorce. The poor guy didn't think they were funny at all, and kept honestly saying so, but they kept right on harassing him about it. "A whole month? Get over it already," "Channel your anger into closing some deals!", "Are you going to have another lousy excuse this month?" and so on.
When the meeting was finally over, they decided to call me out to see what I could do. I was volunteered to demonstrate an F-150 to the entire staff. It was my first day, and it had been 2 years since I was in sales, but I talked about the boxed frame rails, low end tourque, all the features and benefits. I think it went OK, didn't hear anything positive or negative from anyone, even the managers.
After that, no one would take the time to show or tell me anything I wanted to know. My team leader, the sales manager who had interviewed me, who now wanted to be called "Chief Slapahoe, cause every five minutes I slap a hoe," just told me to wing it. I went out on the floor not even knowing where the blank paperwork was should I need it. Had there been any buyers, I would not have known what do do with one, meaning how to go the whole process and give the customer the impression that I had the slightest idea what I was doing. At least I had observed where the sales tower and key machine were.
The day went slow. One of the managers introduced himself to me and learning that I had no children, told me to buy a picture frame from Wal-Mart, one of the ones that comes with a sample photo. "Use the picture to close deals, it really works." I tried to play it off as a joke, but he was dead serious. "We do what it takes." Wow.
At my previous job we had rotating shifts, each day one team stayed to close and one went home at 5. At this place it seemed like everyone was expected to work bell to bell, 9 to 9. One of my only "ups" wanted to see a "BRAND NEW" Ranger the store had advertised on a billboard for $9,979. Of course, we had nothing even close. You can imagine how that went.
Nearing the end of the second day, after about 23 hours on the job in 2 days, I walked up to my manager and quit. Back when I'd left my previous dealership, I had gone straight to the GM, who had seemed like I was wasting his time. So this time I just told my manager and left. He tried to talk me into staying, but everything I had seen and heard so far just gave me a really bad feeling. I'm an honest guy, and like to do business a certain way, and just didn't feel like I was fitting in on these front lines.
Here's where it got interesting. The next day, while back on the job hunt, I got a call from the General Manager, and this was the first time he had spoken to me. "So, I heard you had a problem here," he said. "No sir, I just decided that a sales position in your organization was not for me," I responded. "What? Why?" he demanded. Instead of telling him that his dealership was ten times sleazier than the other one I had worked for, I just said I wanted to be in more of a customer service oriented role. After a long speech about how much they value customer service, and while I was still wondering what this was all about, he stated that he wished I'd have seen him before I left, he'd have told me about another job in the dealership. He wanted me to come back in for an interview.
Curiosity was killing me, so I went back in. He explained that he had just lost his "Personalization Manager" and said that if I read the newspaper, I would see why, but that he couldn't go into it. Evidently the guy had some major personal issues? I never found out exactly, although I really wanted to know. The position came with a nice office, was "Quasi-Management" and would involve working with customers who have bought or were about to buy, and who were interested in any kind of dealer installed accessory. The position would also entail coordinating inventory with parts dept. and installation with service, plus generate some managerial type reports on vehicle sales for the GM. It was salary plus commission but we never got to exact figures. He wanted me to come back later in the week when thier corporate computer guy would be there to talk further about my MS Excel knowledge, and then we'd "Iron out all the details."
Well, during the interim, I heard back from a different company in another field, non-sales related, which I had interviewed for several weeks before. I had the other job, and it payed OK, so I took it. I called the GM back to explain and apologize, but as soon as he heard I wasn't coming back, he just hung up on me! Which pretty much confirmed (again) my gut feeling about the place anyway.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I still wonder how the job would have been. I think I'd have rather enjoyed the job itself, and possibly would have made quite a bit of money. I know many customers ask for things to be added to their cars. In a big dealership, what would you guess the salary of a "personalization manager" be? Would it have been a good job? Thoughts?
Because more than likely the buyer didn't know what a good deal was because he didn't do his research. He probably thought you just keep working one dealer against another and the well never runs dry.
Sooner or later you have to s--- or get off the pot.
