"If I buy a car, I am the one who has an obligation to the state. The Dealer is under no obligation to complete and file my reg applications and such. If the dealer offers to take care of this for me on my behalf, that is a reasonable convenience for me, and since the dealer does this much more often than me, they are hopefully more likely to not screw up the process. Not that the process is difficult, but I'm pretty sure we have all witnessed someone turned away at the DMV office because they didn't have their paperwork in order. If the dealer wants to charge a reasonable fee for this convenience, I don't have a big problem with that. "

When I moved to North Carolina last year, my family went with me to transfer the tags from MD to NC. After waiting in line for about an hour, we got to the window to discover that one of the papers we had was wrong. I would guess that about half of the people were being turned away for one reason or other.

The only thing I had to buy was a 19 inch black and white tv, used of course. $50.

Man…that was a lot less than what I did when I was a newly wed in 67’.

NBC had just announced in the Spring of 67’ (I think) that their entire Fall line up was going to be televised in color. Since we were married in the summer, I said to ‘you know who’, “there is no sense in buying a black and white set, lets go whole hog and get a color TV (I’m thinking football games here, whoopee :D ) Even with the set on sale and my mothers 10% discount (from a large department store here in the Burgh) that set cost about $670 with tax. This was a 25 inch “console” beauty, which was a BIG part of my monthly pay back then. I’m not sorry I did it; I just spoiled myself early.

Topic thing: That TV was delivered (free) by a truck that had to get horrible gas mileage. :(

My moniker comes not from any nc school but from the late great Gene Chandler

I know exactly what you’re referring to. I’m sorry to hear he is no longer with us. I remember seeing him do a Doo Wop 50’s show on PBS about 10 years ago. I believe it was the first of the PBS Doo Wop Specials which originated here in the Burgh. He came down the aisle twirling his cape as he approached the stage. I taped that show and still have it.

I've been lurking for awhile…

Glad you’re out of the closet now. Stick around, some of us are dedicated to a campaign to get some of you guys involved but it’s been slow going. :( It really ain’t so bad in here. C’mon, can you honestly cite one occasion, where someone who didn’t deserve it, was beaten up so badly that they never returned. :confuse:

Remember, we know where you live now. ;)

I hope he likes the MyGIG entertainment system as much as I like mine.

We lover ours on our 08 Jeep Grand Cherokee. They sure really advertise it more. It's a great feature.

Gosh, you were lucky. We didn't buy our first color TV until 1973. Gone With The Wind was going to be shown on television. I told my wife that I refused to watch it in black and white. We purchased a 17 inch Zenith on sale for $395. It was so exciting. In addition to other TV's over the years, we kept it until last year. I finally gave it to the housekeeper. It still worked like a charm---never had been in a repair shop!

To Stay On Topic: We brought the TV home in the back of our new 1973 Buick LeSabre sedan---navy blue with a light blue top and navy blue interior. I don't know which I loved more---the new car or the new color TV. Life was good.

Hey fez, I’m not the one that had him buried. Lurker turned poster, ‘duke 23’ in post 30868 said:

I only read the obituaries, I don’t create them. If this is what we can expect from lurkers they should go back to lurking. We have enough bum dope to sift through here without being held responsible for policing this too.

I’m happy to hear Gene Chandler is still with us. :):D

Didn't intend to single you out. Yours just happened to be the last post to mention it so that's what got the reply. Duke will be pleased. Gene will be even more pleased.

Richard - Of COURSE it still works. It was a good old American Zenith. You could hardly kill those things. My dad won a 25" Zenith console color TV in a sales contest in maybe 1973 or 4. He still had it until just a couple of years ago when it needed a repair and the part was too hard to find. The first color TV we had was a 1966 Monkey Wards Airline. This was one of the last ones with the round picture tube. That's how he got it. He worked for Montgomery Ward at the time and some guy had just bought this set and when he saw they immediately changed to rectangular tubes he kept finding things wrong with it. He kept complaining and my dad finally talked the regional office into giving the guy a new TV and bringing the old one to the store. As soon as it was there dad says, "Well, as long as we're stuck with this TV I'd give you.."... much less than normal price. DAd never saw a deal he didn't like.

Lol. I did not buy my color tv and stereo until the next year and after we moved to the big city and started making a little money. For our first anniversary I bought my wife (heh, heh) a magnavox color tv and separate stereo. Each one was over $600. Quite a lick back then.

That same year I also bought a bright red 1968 Chevy Impala with a black vinyl roof. I messed up and got the small v8, 307 cid, I think. It was good looking but that was about it. It was a demo with about 6,000 miles on it and cost a grand total of $3300.

If you think the 307 was bad, our first second car was a slightly faded bright red 1967 Chevy Impala coupe with a black vinyl top and a 283 cid that my parents practically gave to us in the early 70’s.

What was the big engine for that thing…a 327?

There is a little tale that I can tell about this car that is pretty interesting.

……… TO BE CONTINUED :D

I still have my mother's 1986 25 inch Zenith console color TV. When we cleaned out her house in '95, I moved it to our house for the guest bedroom. Last year, the contractor for our new home saw it one day and exclaimed, "Look, an antique TV." Being a little irritated, I remarked, "It has better color than your plasma." That shut him up. Actually, it does have great color. My two great nephews love to watch it when they visit.

To stay on topic: When my mother died in '95, I sold her 1976 Buick Regal---red and white with red leather seats. Dad bought it for her new and she never wanted to give it up. It had a grand total of 39,000 miles on it. Every Monday morning, she would clean the inside of it herself. She had it washed every two weeks whether it needed it or not. It stayed in the garage at all times. The day that I sold it, it looked show room new. She even had a leather case with all maintenance work documented in it---even the tickets for the car washes! :surprise:

Wow, your mom was a good car guy! My Evil Wife has never washed her car or cleaned the interior in her life! Other than filling it was gas, she is blissfully unaware of any other maintenance type items required ("Oil? That's just another name for gas, right?"). I have been thoroughly disgusted when I clean her car: lollipops stuck to the leather seats, dried American Cheese, peanut butter crackers all over the place, candy wrappers... I "mention" that this is no way to treat a $40k car, but deaf ears...

It's 6.5 years old, and looks pretty good thanks to my maintenance of washing/waxing, detoxing the interior and routine maintenance. But I'm not bitter...

I looked it up and they don't have it. There's another place in AZ that carries Sonor drums and also add on drums. My kit is the 3001 series and they are up to 3007 now. Every other year they will update the Force series. My finish (Honey Maple) was only available up to the 3003, and 3005, then they replaced it with a natural finish..
Your post reminds me of when I was a kid playing in jr. high and high school. Before I had a car the sax player would pick me up in his Chevy truck and we would load my drums. Later when I became of driving age my Mom bought me a 1964 Ford Thunderbird for $800.00 dollars. I was to pay her back from the money I made on gigs. I would do the same as you. I would put the bass drum behind the passenger seat and the rest of the kit in the trunk. It had a pretty big trunk.

With my last band I didn't worry too much about transporting the kit as we would practice at the sax and one of the trumpet player's dad's club. So the kit stayed put most of the time as we became sort of like the house band when we weren't doing weddings and other occasions .

Ah, the good old days! To remember is to live!

I hate it when that happens. Here in Virginny our DMV's have a person where they give you your number and ask what you are there for. In this case he/she would have told you one of the forms was wrong and you wouldn't have had to wait so long. That happened to me today but in a different situation. I went to my local clinic which is about 5-6 miles from my house. I went to pick up a prescription that my oncologist put in last wednesday. I have picked up this prescription before at this same clinic. Well today must be a full moon day as I waited for over an hour until my number was called. They only had three windows instead of the customary six. So the "pharmacist" looks it up in his computer terminal and asks me what the medicine is for. DUH! and he calls himself a pharmacist?? So I tell him what it's for and he tells me they can't give it to me since there is not a note in there from my doc saying what the meds are for. "So you're telling me the prescription is in the system. A prescription which I picked up right here two weeks ago and it's time for another one and you can't give it to me?" I was starting to lose my patience. "It's a controlled substance." the guy says to me. "So what? the order is in there from my doctor and I have picked it up here before! I don't see what the big deal is." I was ready to blow! "We have to order it as we don't keep it here." he tells me. "Then why didn't you say so in the first place instead of giving me a bs story." and I walked away. I'm calling my doc and letting her know what's going on. Luckily I still have a few days left on the last script.

Since Mom and Dad were victims of the Great Depression, I think that their generation believed in taking care of things. In addition to the car mentioned above, their furniture had no scratches, and you could eat off of Mom's floors. Dad was the same. His truck was never dirty, and his garage was as clean as any room in the house.

It must have rubbed off. My nephew says that I have the cleanest and most organized garage in America. It actually has room for two cars. ;) :shades:

Back on topic: I purchased a new trimmer yesterday and man am I having fun with it.! It's got a 1HP engine two stroke, 1 piston, and runs like a bat out of heck. I almost finished the perimeter of my house and the front of the house this morning and this evening. It was way too hot for me. I started at 10 am and stopped at 1pm after I drank about six bottles of water. I decided to go in and rest. I thought I was going to faint! I got back to it around 7pm and it was still hot so I did the areas that are in the shade. I'll finish later tomorrow. I have to go night night now as I have a PET scan in the morning at 9. Good night.

I take car of my car-(my husband does wax it and I get to wipe the wax off). I know how to check the oil, tire pressure and the fluids. I also know how to change a flat tire. I handwash the car at least once a week, vacuum it and get it serviced. I do not allow eating in the car. I also love to cook and bake cakes, pies and cookies (from scratch). Oh yes one more thing-I mow the grass (not with a tracker, either)

Over 3 hours just to trim and you are still not done? May I suggest actually starting the motor on that thing instead of just using it to pound the grass back into the ground. Either that or you have a huge estate.

My wife doesn't even watch me cut the lawn (nor do I use a tractor...). I tell her to at least look or listen once in a while. If the mower engine stops and I don't come into the house after a bit, please look outside and ensure that I am not face down on the front lawn, not breathing... She said she might, as long as I maintain my life insurance policy!

I do wish my wife shared a bit of your car and lawn traits... But she enjoys cooking and baking, too. And is a completely wonderful human being. Although, she does have terrible taste in men...

Oh, and to stay on topic: One Evil Wife car buying story, she told me this one. Long before we met, she was dating a guy that sold Chevys. Well, for whatever reason, she dumped him. She said that he was none too pleased with this turn of events. A couple of weeks later, she bought a new Monte Carlo from him and told me that he gave her a great deal! Uh, huh. The kid you dumped, a car salesman who makes a commissioned living, gave you a great deal... I'm sure the deal included a discount on the mop/glo, rust/dust when they NEVER discount those mandatory options. Probably threw in a free steering wheel and fuzzy dice...

I still plan one of these days to visit the local mega dealer to scope out all of the stuff (almost all) that I am considering, just in case my new job with the lousy commute goes through.

The dealer just redid the whole complex. All new stores, and they even built a test track. makes it very easy to see different brands quickly, and to compare side to side. I believe one sales guy can take you around. They don't have VOlvo, but I already saw that.

Not sure if the test track replaces on the road driving, or if you have to ask special for that. Guess I will find out.

IIRC< they have Honda (bought my van there), Acura, BMW, CHevy, Toyota, BMW, Hyundai, Hummer, something expensive in with hummer (masserati?) and Nissan. Might be missing omething too.

Ford, Dodge, Saturn, Mazda, subaru and VW are seperate delaers, but all within a mile or 2 on the same road.

Bring a picnic, makes for a solid day of fun!

Oh, and I saw an ad yesterday that Ford is offering a $4,500 rebate on the Edge (FWD model I think). From what Joel says, I thought they were doing OK on those?

I did a “search inventory” on the Ford dealers in my local area (Tacoma, WA) for the Edge and found the lots had quite a few AWD and very few FWD. They are offering $2000 Retail cutomer cash and $1000 Bonus customer cash.

Nice cars, but too much money and a little more car than what we need.

People wonder why the salespeople on this board have an adversarial attitude towards our customers. This happened yesterday and probably happens three times a week.
I am in the showroom and a gentleman comes in from down in our bullpen lot ( cars and trucks priced 10k and under).
" How much do you want for that PT Cruiser?"
I reply, " Well it has X miles on it and we're asking X for it."
His eyes grow wide and he gets a disgusted scowl on his face, " You guys are a bunch of *&%*% thieves I cant believe you want X for that car!"

After 10 years and three or four times a week that song gets pretty old.

Everyone gets that, all the time.

It's always the same story, too much for the price, too little for the trade etc etc....

The last couple fo years we had an influx of US imports come into Canada as the prices were so much cheaper on the mid and high end vehicles.

The comment of the day was "I can get it for $X in the States, why is it so much more here (in Canada)."

I always had to explain that it's the manufacturers that set the pricing and not the dealers. Then we'd get asked to "match" the US price" and they'll do a deal. That's like asking for the impossible.

I'd say: If you want to go and buy it in the US then go ahead, and find your own financing, get the money ready, fly down there or drive, make a deal, get the paperwork handled, deal with customs, and so on and so on....... and deal with warranty issues should any arise.

I'd always explain that you will lose on the resale value, as buyers typically prefer local vehicles with local history, with a metric odometer and speedo etc....

So a friend of a friend came to see me when I was at Infiniti, and I priced out an FX35 for him. He told me he could get it in the US for $8k cheaper, Not much I could have done, so he went and did just that. About a year later he finds out he gets transfered overseas for a new job, so he's trying to get rid of his FX35, but his asking price is more than what he paid (but less than what it cost here new), and more than what most used ones go for here.

He's trying to justify it with the options on it and this and that but I told him many times " If you had two identical FX35s side by side, both same prices, mileage options, and one was local but the other one from the US, which one would you buy?

Anyways the point is: people always think it's priced too much unless it's their own car they're selling. Human nature I guess.

There is nothing that makes me crazier than a situation like that. One time I had a broken ankle and had to have surgery. I was in there for a refill that my docvtor had called in. The pharmacist said they didn't have the order. I call my doctor right away freaking out while I am in CVS. Had to wait another hour and a half.

It reminded me of the car business in a way. They originally said "This should take 15 minutes".... 1.5 hours later I was able to walk out. I probably didn't help looking at the pharmacist angry the whole time. What can I say I was in pain.

As entertaining as the banter is, we really do need to stray back onto topic a lttle more frequently. That's what people come here for and we don't want to scare them off.

No Soup for You!!! :P

I guess I just can't relate to all you old timers (geezers) stories of the olden days and musical instruments.

I bet the Amish can since they have both ridden in a horse and buggy :P
