Gp, when buying a car overseas for US delivery it gets handled differently. A lot of service members like to have their cars waiting for them when they get back to the states. Some will do the negotiating with a dealer in the US via internet and phone. I sold quite a few vehicles that way when I was a ISM. Military troops stationed in Germany and other parts of Europe. It worked out better that way since most would go with USAA for their financing and we would pass on any incentives to them. Worked out great.

As a salesman, can you still get her the $1,500 in rebates, or is that beyond your control? It seems a shame that she can't save some money on this deal.

BTW, try to use "could HAVE saved her" instead of "could OF saved her". ;)

    "I always order a car."

We've traveled this road before. You do not "order" vehicles from Toyota. All dealers in the US get an allocation of vehicles built with most popular options and dealers get to "pick" what they want. Some add PIO port installed options which are profitable to the port and the dealer. Some of these "options" can be deleted before the car gets to the port and are never put on the car. What you think you "ordered" was actually a car already in the pipeline to your dealer or another Toyota dealer and allocations were swapped.

Too late now. All paperwork has been done and she's just picking up the car. I've done a few of these in my time. All I do is go over the features, owner's manuals, warranty, and pat them on the behind and send them home. ;)

Well, it's more than some of my colleagues do. Other folks just hand them the keys and say "Cya!".
We don't get paid anything for courtesy deliveries. Not the store nor the guy/gal doing the delivery.

I always got irritated when I worked in my previous store, and we were part of a group. There was a top sales guy working in the same auto group, but different brand store.

He would send his customers over to our store, to sell the mour brand, but he would never be here (45 min drive from his sotre to our), so he'd just tell customers to "look around" and pick something.

I got irritated cause he never split deals, and his customers would take up my time, and I'd get nothing in return.

I tried to hide as much as possible, as he should have been there with his customers instead of offloading them on us, and keeping the deals for himself.

Same thing when people would come in to my old Honda store, and want a test drive, and they'd tell you they're going to buy from a broker.

I'd always tell them to go back to their broker and ask him for a test drive. :P

Posted this on another forum, but:

Ok, what can I say. The Caddy XLR just has some kind of hold on me. For the fun of it, on the way home I stop at the Caddy dealer. Two XLRs with the tops down, one a new '08 the other a used '06. After a few minutes, salesman comes over with the keys, figured he was going to see if I was interested. He basically ignores me (like he's my wife!). How poor must I appear to be snubbed by a Caddy salesman!!! Actually, I'll believe that it was due to closing time in about 45 minutes. And that Caddy's sell themselves... :P

So, I say, "Takin' it for a ride?" He replies, "No, just putting the tops up, closing soon." He hops in the '08 and the dance begins: Trunk opens high, panels fold in, top comes up and lowers onto windshield and then...nothing. Trunk won't close. Sales dude sits there for a couple of minutes, kinda shaking his head. Reversed his field, top goes down, properly. Waits a minute, then top goes up properly. Hey, you hit .500 in the bigs and guaranteed Hall of Fame!

As he headed to the '06, he just looked at me and kinda shrugged. I got into my uber-shiny TL and opened/closed the sunroof without incident as I left...

Still, someone who looks presentable, driving a shiny new-looking entry level lux car, wearing a fine Swiss timepiece and looking at cars listing for ~80k might at least get an "Any questions before we close up?" Nah, must have been an order-taker.

What you think you "ordered" was actually a car already in the pipeline to your dealer or another Toyota dealer and allocations were swapped.

What armydave doesn't realize is that Toyota knows what he wants and that he truely doesn't know what he wants therefore Toyota never takes custom orders. Don't like it? Buy a GM. Serves ya right!!
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,120
Sue'em? Probably! But, to get what in return? By the time it wound its way through the court system, the company would be dust.

Thought about getting my old gig back. But, I recommended a very good friend, and a very good and knowledgeable worker to take my place. Even if they said "hey GG....we'd love to have you back (which they might do), I wouldn't treat my friend like that.

laurasdada.....my opinions about Caddys, and their dealers around here are not good. For that kind of jack, especially for an XLR, you better have someone who knows the product, and be willing to help someone who's about to lay $80K large on the table. I know the CTS has got rave reviews, but there are certain things the General just can't seem to get right. One of them is high end electronics. I don't care of it's a GPS system, or an electro-mechanical device. GM just can't seem to quite grasp it.

On the other hand, I feel they make some of the best auto trannys in the world. The small blocks they sell are hard to beat, too (regardless of whether you're a push rod fan, or not). I don't know that anyone can deny the overall goodness of the General's small blocks.

kyfdx....maybe it's because I've lusted after a Corvette since I was in my early teens. When I finally got to the point in life I could afford one, I can't overcome the stigma they now carry....that is, guys who have hair transplants or that wear a wig. Or guys who are more interested in the image they portray to the "under 30 set" than they are in enjoying what a Corvette can really do. Neither of those are an image I can see myself embracing. Besides, I'm fortunate enough to still be sporting my own hair. I just turn into a teen again every time I go through the Corvette musuem.

I guess I also know my days are numbered....that is my days of despising anything that says "hybrid" on it.

    Too late now

    Rich,

Mack is right it was too loate because she had wired the money like a month ago or something. She didn't really care about the money. She goes " we only live once"...

The store gets $75.00 to do a courtesy delivery. Plus they service department gets the PDI... Pre Delivery Inspection...

But the saleperson... Me in this instance, the one who demo drives her, and makes sure it gets registered and ready for delivery.... gets a nice thank you sandwhich from the customer......

Who knows maybe one day she will refer someone to me.... that is about all I can ask for. :shades:

As for the ordering cars thing....

Yes if you want to order a car you have to wait for the next allocation that Mack was talking about. Order it, than wait for it to be delivered to your store.

I hear people stating that Nissan doesn't do ordered cars... Well I do swaps if the car is available. If it isn't than you have to put your order in and wait 3 months. I don't believe GM or any other domestic is going to order a car and have it there in 2 days or a week.

Nothing like combat to make you see what is really important.

"...I don't believe GM or any other domestic is going to order a car and have it there in 2 days or a week..."

The Pontiac guy said 3 weeks. This may have been BS but that's what he said. The Nissan guy said 3 months, maybe. He sounded like he didn't like the idea even though the Nissan plant is just about as close to me as Detroit.

Perhaps what GG said is correct. There must be some logistical problems with getting just one car.

Well, I think I've paid my Corvette dues. This is my 4th one, with the first one at about 27 years of age.

Regarding the hair reminds me several years ago I was back visiting the 'homestead' and sitting next to an elderly aunt. She has (had, she is since deceased) two sons, the 'cannot do any wrong love of her life sons', that were chrome-domes very early in life. I saw her eyeing my head, which was greying up pretty well, and the old biddy actually reached over and PULLED ON MY HAIR. Then said, 'I just wanted to see it it was real.' And, today my hair is still hanging in there very well.

On the Corvette forums I read, this topic, the stigma associated with Corvette owners, is discussed some. Mention of open shirts with heavy gold chains also occurs. There is also a lot of discussion about payment plans, interest rates, getting qualified for loans, etc. I personally think if you can't pay cash for a Corvette, you should not be owning one. This is not a car for a daily driver, payment plan owner. And yes, many, many of the current owners are 'up in years'. As an buyer of a new one, I get the Corvette Quarterly magazine, and there is nothing but grey/missing haired owners pictured in there. It's just a fact that buying a $45,000 - $75,000 car is more easily done when you are older.

My first one, a 1972 coupe, was a daily driver but I wrote a check for $5,500, if memory serves me.

And, laurasdad (I think), you should strongly consider a Corvette rather than a Cadillac XLR. They both are made in Bowling Green, not sure if on the same line or not. But when you decide to turn loose of the car, the Corvette will hold much more value. Few people want a used XLR. One a couple of years old, with only about 10,000 miles, sat on the local dealers lot until they wholesaled it somewhere.

This is a true story - only the names have been changed to protect the guilty. A couple of years ago this gentleman who we shall call Louie comes up to my desk and says "I want to buy a supercharged Range Rover today." Well, he did and financed with his bank. Several months later he said he needed a Supercharged Sport for his girlfriend. So we sold him number 2 and financed it thru one of our sources. A couple of months later he said the girlfriend was gone and he traded the Sport in on another S/C RR. So now he has two of them. A year later he says he has a big deal coming in and wants to give RR #1 to a "kid who is brokering the deal" and buy another for himself. After all, nobody should be without 2 S/C RRs. Well that dragged on and on and he said that he had a little legality to clear up and we could put the deal together....

As we were saying when we were interrupted, Louie had become a friend by now, not to mention the first 3 S/C buyer for the store. Well, one day we were patiently sitting at our desk waiting for another customer when in swoops the Federal Government with a search warrant for the records for our dealings with Louie. Turns out Louie had been running shell games for years. I was a witness and thank God (for the lives he destroyed) he is now doing hard time. His story could make one heck of a movie though.

Greetings, Bolivar: Enjoy your Vette (and I know that you do!). I care not about "stigmas" or what folks who are not paying for my car think about it. I appreciate honest opinions, but if I'm paying for it, my opinion is the correct one!

You're probably correct, I could pick up a new Vette for the price of a two or three year old XLR. But that rapid depreciation might mean two year old, maybe cpo, for 50 cents on the original dollar XLR. As I've noted, the XLR is just an irrational desire. Much more than likely it won't happen.

My dome is chrome, I'm old and have an Evil Wife that makes a decent coin. I'm the perfect Vette demographic! :P No gold chains, however...

As a side note, anyone who is a 'vette fan (or even if you're mildly curious), you owe it to yourself to make a trip to the Corvette factory and museum in Bowling Green, KY.

I'll second that motion. Touring the Corvette assembly plant is one of the things I will never forget.

It may even be worth taking a side trip if you are anywhere in the area.

The company was in Northern Cincinnati if I understand correctly. Operated much like Girls Gone Wild from the news clips I found today. Refused to cancel subscriptions automatically sending refills, etc. If you saw Girls Gone Wild advertisements on late night cable you probably saw Enzyte commercials and infomercials.

I'm trying to think of a song title with a catch to it or a song phrase so this can fit in, but can't.

I spent some time at the Saab dealer recently. Sat in a very comfortable front seat in the showroom car. I understood why they are popular with the owners; very nice cars.

That happened to me my first year in the biz. We had a guy in our company that would do the same thing. I didn't even know who he was until one friday afternoon two couples showed up looking to test drive a 4runner. They never mentioned the other guy which I will call Shady. So we picked out a 4runner limited 4x4 loaded. Took it on a test drive and as we are riding around I began asking some trial close questions. "So how do you like the ride?" "Will you be trading your current vehicle in?" etc.etc.. and these dweebs just laugh and say they already have everything worked out with Shady and he will meet them at the dealership. At that time Shady was at our Hyundai, Izusu, VW. location. I still didn't know who the hell he was. So we get back to the store and they want to look at some numbers. So I practically do the whole deal, credit application, copies of driver's licenses. The works. I take the folder to the GSM and we start working the deal. Right around that time Shady shows up and he goes over to the table where his friends are sitting at then comes over to me. He thinks he's a bad [non-permissible content removed] and tries to intimidate me by giving me a dirty look and asking for the deal folder. "Where's my deal folder?" he asks in a menacing tone. "Your deal folder? Who the heck are you?" I respond. "Those are my customers. I sent them down here to pick out a 4runner." he replies. "Let me guess, and you also thought that someone here at the store would take them on a test drive, work figures, close the deal and all you would have to do is pick up your commission right?" I said to him. I was holding the folder in my hands and he tried to snatch it away from me. Wrong move. Just as he lunged forward to attack me the General Manager walked up to the sales desk and asked him what on earth did he think he was doing. He mumbled something about sending customers to test drive and that I had the deal folder. I said to the GM. "John, I don't even know who this guy is. The customers came in and asked if they could test drive a 4runner. We worked numbers, and then after I had all the paperwork together they tell me they are buying the vehicle from Shady. I asked who the heck is shady?" and they just laughed. The GM was not amused. "Which store do you work out of?" he asked Shady. "The Hyundai, Izusu, VW store." he replied. "I want you to go back to your store with your customers and go straight to your GM and tell him what you did. I'm going to call him now so he will be waiting for you. I don't ever want to see you in my store again threatening or assaulting my people. You got that?" and off he sent him. I seen shady a few times after that and since that incident he started showing me some respect. We actually became good buddies but I still think he's shady.\

Just about everyone wears a Swiss timepiece nowadays. Heck, they sell them right down the street in Manhattan. Fake Rolex, Omega, Cartier, you name it. You would have fared better if you were wearing baggy pants down to the crack of your butt with a ball cap worn sideways, threadlocks, and bling all over yourself, and a Dolce and Gabana watch. The salesman might have mistaken you for a rock star or hip hop artist. Looking presentable today is no guarantee of good service.

"get some Allen Edmonds or Aldens instead"

Ah, Aldens. Someone else with bad or non-ordinary sized feet.

    They sell shoes that FIT!

3 lasts (different angles of the wide portion of the shoe) and any size.

I was fitted with a last with an acute angle, size 9 AA toe, AAA heel, orthopedic heel. Four pairs of these, with multiple re-soles and re-heels, got me through many years of corporate dress-up.

Of course, they have only a few styles - black smooth toe, black cap toe, brown textured toe with seam, brown semi-wing tip, brown and black wing-tip, steel toe black oxford, might have had a black calf level steel toe boot with acid resistent sole, and, yes, golf shoes!!! Everything with strings. If your feet hurt, throw away those loafers and get something with strings.

Car related? Oh, heck, only 10% of the posts in the last 3 years have been car related!
