It's really kind of semi-retirement in that I've agreed to work an additional 600 days over the next five years. That said, I didn't hate my job, but it was starting to get old. I also remember Dad, who planned a lot of vacations but never went. He had the time and money but he never retired and died of cancer while still employed full time. That's not going to happen to me.

which begets the question: "Younger" than who? I did not see any other entity mentioned in the story.
Secondly, who lets a young blonde fill up the gas in her car using a red gas can? I would have hoped you, and plenty others, would have jumped to her assistance. What is happening to this world?

No, I believe that Teletubbies are either an alien mind-control plot or propaganda from the gay lobby. :confuse: Depends on who you listen to.

No, nothing so exciting. These girls danced in miniskirts and boots. Remember, this was before Disco.
To keep on topic, I took her out in my dad's Dodge station wagon. Maybe that's why it didn't last.

ahhh man... I was about to flip a coin because I couldn't remember if it was capitalized or not.
Even had "English" being used at the beginning of the sentence so I would be covered either way.
If I wrote, "I speak english."... then english would not be capitalized?
fcm....I'm with jipster on your issue with $2,000. Any F&I person, in any dealership, is going to count out $2,000 when it's handed to him/her. That's something that HAS to be remembered. Could be a case of someone covering their behind because they lost $2K.
I think 'ye ole jippy is right that they probably do believe you....otherwise, they wouldn't have issued the temp tag again.
Personally, I'd offer them the opportunity to take back their ride, if they return the $2K you deposited. It's on the contract. Somebody, somewhere at the dealership has made a mistake. While it would have been good to have a receipt for the $2K, you've got the contract. Not as iron clad, but that should be enough.
Throw the ball back into their court. They're going to have to be the ones who find the money. I would imagine they don't want an unhappy customer on their hands. And, dealerships aren't really fond of going to small claims court (at least not the ones I've ever dealt with).
GG, you're a stronger man than I. I not only would have purchased the Z from Elaine, I probably then would have bought one for Elaine too!

I work at a dealership and I never give the car untill all money is in house!!!
If they misplaced the reciept shame on them. They gave you the car. It shows on the purchase and sale SIGNED by a manager that oh well for them.
I would go make a police complaint on this issue though. How many temp plates are you going to recieve? I would make the complaint because now you have to get the vehicle registered to be leagal I would think.
To add to this, many years ago at my previous dealership..... I may have shared this story in the past.
It was a Sunday night after closing. There was me, a sales manager, and a another salesman.... he was always shady. We will call him Jimmy....
We both ended up closing our deals at the same time. The customers left and we both said we will see each other in the morning at the breakfast meeting at 6:45am.
We met at the meeting.... We had meeting once a month to get bonus checks if we met CSI and to hear how great our dealerships were. It was alot of brainwashing...
Anyway I sat next to Jimmy at the breakfast meeting. We both got over $2,000 in bonuses and at the end of the meeting he turns to me and says hey tell the GM I will be running late because I have something to do. He goes I told him already but remind him when you see him.
Well fast forward to 7pm that night. Jimmy never made it in. His customer shows up looking to take delivery. The managers were unaware that she was taking delivery that night because it is the salespersons resposibilty to make sure deliveries go out on time. They say no problem we will see what we can do. They double check the paperwork and the down payment of $1500 was missing. They ask for it and the customer states they gave Jimmy $1500 last night in cash....
Well now everything is starting to come together. The customer right away calls the police. She too never recieved a reciept  The cops tell her there is nothing you can do with out the reciept. In the ned the dealership ended loosing the $1500 and delivering the car because the lady started getting the media involved. A police warrant was issued for Jimmy.... Who by the way it came out later tha he went on a cocaine bender with all of the ladies money and his bonus check. After a few months Jimmy was arrested... served 60 days... and 2 months later was working at a competing store.
My suggetion to you is especialy since they gave you the car is to make the biggest stink you can about this until you receive your plates and are fully legal to drive. I am sure it is not the only dealership around.
Good luck!
GP
LOL....
I have to agree with you there old farmer
gp
If this person had just gotten the paperwork (MSO, sales contract, whatever the state requires) when he picked up the car, the missing $2,000 would be totally the dealership's problem.
Now, they have the threat of not giving the plates to him as incentive to collect the lost $2,000.
I'm not a lawyer either, but I would get the police involved. Not just a patrolman, I would want a detective to come out. Watching Judge Judy, a person (or company) cannot withhold one service to collect on another debt. It's like stealing something from someone to pay off a debt - that is aganist the law. That is essentially what the dealer is trying to do. He paid the dealer to buy the plates, the dealer has the plates, he is due to receive the plates.
Call the police.
I wonder if the OP's salesman was named Jimmy.
As to the issue of cash vs. checks I've seen it go both ways. I bought a car at a Chrysler dealer and they insisted on a certified bank check. A few years later I bought from another different Chrysler dealer and was told "your check is good enough for us". Both times the deposit was $100 on the credit card. $2000 for a deposit seems high.

If you take the rebate and apply it to the purchase, you will always have a lower outstanding balance. IOW, you have more equity.
If you trade or total that baby early in the loan, it will make a big difference, since the $2,500 is yours to keep, but the APR stops being of benefit once the loan ceases to exist.
Also, I have written a personal check for the entire amount of the car a few times. Dealer didn't seem to have any problem with it.
Even better, a Nissan dealer once just "gave" me a truck. Actually, they printer (or computer) was acting up, so they coouldn't get the paperwork to print (I was financing through them). They did have my DP check, and just said take the truck and come in the next day to sign. Of course I did, otherwise they would have had a heck of a time getting that contract past the bank!
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Now to keep it close to the actual topic, as a salesperson, how do you handle a customer that wants the car that you just don't have? I've had a guy tell me that a manual tranny in a Passat was a "special order from the factory only" (This was a few years back.) because he didn't have one on the lot. (a few months earlier, I test drove both a V6 and a turbo 4 with a stick before I was ready to buy... both were obviously not a "very special order" then..)
As soon as the guy told me that, he lost any chance of a sale...

I hope you can help me here. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn't driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help.
When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor girl. I am 32, my husband is 34, and the neighbor girl is 22. We have been married for ten years.
When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that they had been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. He won't go to counseling and I'm afraid I can't get through to him anymore.
Can you please help?
Sincerely, Sheila
******************************
Dear Sheila:
A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber.
I hope this helps.
Walter

Hey, how you doin'...
laurasdada....I'm not bad. Thanks for asking.
WARNING....OFF TOPIC (and a bit self-serving). I flit in and out of here on occasion. Was real busy for awhile and wasn't here all that much. Got some time on my hands now. So, I'm back. I had quit my long standing job to take a high risk position with a startup company several months ago.
That was a mistake. Hindsight is always 20-20, though. Was busting my tail to get the new company on solid footing. We had VC money, but were in the red. No sooner had I made the change to the new company and the mortgage crisis hit. Followed shortly by this crazy oil situation. It was a tough slog but we were making solid progress. VCs are notoriously impatient, though (as I would be too if I had millions invested).
Then, a few weeks ago, I was driving to Chicago (from OH) to meet with a potential business partner. I hadn't been feeling well since the night before. I thought I had food poisoning as my gut hurt like nothing I'd ever felt before. And, I was having violent dry heeves. I got as far as Merillville (about an hour outside of Chicago) and couldn't go any further. Found a hotel and spent the night in Merillville thinking whatever I had would pass, and I could continue onto Chicago early the next morning. It didn't.
Deciding I was in no shape to meet with a potential business partner (ummm....excuse me sir while I heeve again). I got into my car and drove home. Probably not the safest thing I've ever done, but I couldn't bear the thought of spending another night in the condition I was in while far away from home, in a strange hotel. Somehow, I made it home (miraculously uninjured, and without injuring anyone else on the road).
Went to the hospital emergency room before I even got to my house. I must have looked pretty bad because they didn't make me wait for more than 5 minutes. Long and short of it, my appendix had burst. They immediately took me into surgery. Said I was really lucky as if I'd waited another hour or so, the infection would have spread to the point where it would have been life threatening.
(will continue this later)
I thought so too, but I think the OP meant downpayment.
LOL. Bet he's wanting to join "Team Jipster" after reading that post. We'll put him on our waiting list.
BTW, I had wondered about that trip to Myrtle Beach. It was jmonroe who was going on that trip, right?
Yes. I looked back a few posts and it was jmonroe going on that trip with his son.
I guess the two of us are easily confused...YIKES! :P

You only regret the things you don't do. Had you not tried the startup, you'd be thinking/wondering about if for the rest of your life. Now, you know and have experience. Is the new company still viable?
My brother and I are kinda polar opposites in the risk taking dept. I generally don't, he does. Professionally, it has paid off quite handsomely for him. My conservative bent has given me a comfy middle class existence. But, what if? I'll never know, because I didn't try...

Walter, like many men just doesn't know how to give advice.
He should have advised the wife to get involved with her husband's "hobbies". Not only will her husband be happy but she will have someone to trade recipes with.
They could all go out for a drive together too.

Is that the best Saab can do, try to make decades old technology sound like some new modern marvel.
The last time I heard such a lame tale it was back in the 70s when one car maker (Ford I think) tried to claim that their big cars could go farther than a compact. it was only true because the Ford had a gas tank that was bigger.
So now it's the "green" BS story.
Do any of the salespeople work at dealers where hoakey claims of "green" technology are being touted?
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Saab is owned by GM. GM is the only company still using decades old technology which is best described by the term "pushrod".
Linking the two companies together I would think it obvious why Saab would advertise old technology.
Now can we get back to Walter.
What Walter should've done is joined the CCBA and learn to trade every year or so then he wouldn't have this problem. :P
That reminds me of this comic strip I have cut out in my office:
The caption reads: "And it does 1200 miles on a tankful of gas."

Two artists, both great, Either one.
Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takes
She said I'll turn you on sonny, to something strong if you play that song with the funky break,
And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outside
And little Early-Pearly came in by her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride,
Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer playin' backyard bombardier
Yes and Scotland Yard was trying hard, they sent a dude with a calling card,
he said, do what you like, but don't do it here
Well I jumped up, turnedaround, spit in the air, fell on the ground
Asked him which was the way back home
He said take a right at the light, keep goin' straight until night, and then boy, you're on your own
My 'pushrod' Corvette does pretty well on old technology!
