Hey duke, I think you meant $3 TRILLION deficit, not billion. That's huge!

I'm getting the song (Blinded by the Light), but cannot think of the band - were they a one hit wonder? I'll probably smack myself in the forehead once somebody gets it.

You had a rough two days. The pain must have been beyond description. Glad you are on the mend. A few years ago, I had a similar experience while on a business trip to Roanoke, VA. It was my first kidney stone attack. I thought that the end had come because the pain was so terrible. Three surgeries and $35,000 later, I felt much better. Take it easy for a bit, and don't overdo.

To stay on topic: I was driving a Tahoe at the time.

    continued...."OFF TOPIC".....

    Fast forward....

I'm in the hospital, fresh out of surgery. I ask my son to call the president of my company to tell him what happened and that I'll be hospitalized for approximately 4-5 days. My boss says to have me call him immediately after I'm discharged.

5 days later, my son comes to pick me up from the hospital to take me home. I get home, call my boss.

There was no "how 'ya feeling"? No, "you doing OK?" It was just "we couldn't afford to have you gone so long. Did you call our potential partner in Chicago?"

me...."well, I called and left a voice mail at his office and on his cell phone to let him know that because of illness, I'd have to reschedule while I was driving back home from our canceled meeting".

boss...."did you hear back from him"?

me..."yes, he left me a voice mail while I was in the hospital that I just picked up. He said he's got another opening on August 8. I called him back and told him the 8th would work for me as I should be back in the saddle by then."

boss..."well, that's unacceptable. You knew how important this meeting was".

    me...."excuse me?"

boss...."we needed to be in front of him immediately. Now, we're behind."

me...."what exactly do you think I should have done given the circumstances?"

boss...."I don't know, but we were expecting an investment from his company. Now, we're in a bind".

me...."well, if it was THAT important, why didn't YOU keep our set meeting time when you heard I was sick? You still had time to get there when I couldn't".

    boss....."I'm on vacation".

me....."I see. So, your vacation was more important than this meeting. And, my emergency surgery interfered with the meeting and your vacation".

    boss...."you being a smart [non-permissible content removed]? "

    me..."If you say so."

boss...."how soon can you pack up your office?"

me...."ummmm....well, unless you can't wait until cooler heads prevail, I guess as soon as I get my stitches out in a couple of days, I can pack things up, then. I'm still pretty sore and not walking too well, yet. You sure you don't want to wait and rethink some of this?"

boss...."I'm sure. I'm not going to forfeit any more of my family's vacation to talk about this."

    END OF STORY.

I know that there are people like Mack who have much more pressing medical issues, but to say I was shocked by this little diatribe would be an understatement.

Thanks for letting be blow off steam.

It’s kind of frightening to think there are people out there in places of power that are so self absorbed, self serving and selfish that they don’t care that you almost died.

Would the potential client want to do business with someone of that caliber? I know I wouldn’t.

Waiting to see what changes the 2009 Ford Taurus will bring. I got a copy of the 2009 ordering information, lots of new colors and old colors discontinued.

This refers to the average vehicle.
This excludes leftovers and the hot car that everyone wants.

Will dealers give you a better price for an ordered vehicle or one of the lot?

I am referring to the on on the lot that has not been there for months or is in some way undesirable.

That is shocking but you will be better off in the long run. This guy is a Pr--k with a capital P. Not someone you would want to work for, with, or even be around. He is probably the reason the company was struggling. Hope you pass him on your way up as he is coming down! :)

"...but to say I was shocked by this little diatribe..."

Perhaps you should give that important client a little call and let him know what kind of company he might be dealing with. Talk about throwaways. Your boss treated you like a Hyundai. (How's that for keeping to topic?)

I worked for a company like that once. After bringing in $40 million in business I was fired because I wasn't a team player (Translation: the boss's mistress doesn't like you). That's when I went into farming. Maybe you should start your own enterprise as well.

BTW, it was just a coincidence that shortly after I was canned, the FBI raided my old company and threw a bunch of them in jail.

Definitely better deal on an in stock vehicle. I have asked that question myself and have gotten answers that still leave me wondering. I think it may have to do with voodoo curses or UFO influences but most dealers would rather feed their children to hungry gators than order a car.

I've had dealers tell outright lies to avoid ordering.

In my experience your best to worst deal will go in this order: In-stock, dealer swap, custom order.

Try some of the buying tip boards for further discussion. Good luck. Be sure to report back on how it goes. :)

Your boss treated you like a Hyundai

I'm sure you meant his boss treated him like a Kia? Hyundai's are no longer considered throwaways according to my latest research (testimonials from snakie and jmonroe).

Speaking of Hyundai's, I almost test drove the Hyundai Azera while in the dealership showroom with my niece. The salesman noticed me looking at it and offered a test drive while we waited for paperwork to be completed. Very tempting as it was a nice looking car. But, there was a 10% chance I might end up buying it, and a 90% chance I would be wasting the salespersons time... and a 100% chance my wife would hit me in the head with a frying pan if I did either one. I'll try to hang in there another 2 years if I can.

He is talking about a CEO. The ones I know (not including Pablo Escobar) take their cell phones with them but leave strict instructions not to be disturbed which makes the vacation more important than office work.

Many times, at the wife's insistence, the cell phone is left at home.

Heck, that's nothing. You haven't experienced pain until you have an infection on your incision and the doctor comes over and says: "This is going to hurt. Bite down on this and hold on to my arm." then she looked around the room at the interns and said "Who's got a staple puller?" I thought to myself: "Oh no. Not without pain medication.!" Then she started pulling the staples out and that didn't hurt too bad until she opened my incision which ran from my breast bone to my pubic bone. Talk about a grown man cry. I screamed at the top of my lungs and tears were rolling down my cheeks from the pain.
Oh, and I got the pictures to prove it. Not a pretty sight. Makes me look twice at a rare piece of steak. I would post the pic but it's not safe for human consumption.

    "...You haven't experienced pain until..."

Since we're all showing our scars...

Last year I ripped the biceps tendon off the bone in my arm. Hurt kinda bad for awhile and made farm work difficult. I went to the doctor and he took me in for surgery that day.

Before surgery I got the gas passer all mad at me because I kept asking for him to knock me out with something that I would wake up from fast so I could go home afterwards and load the truck. I remember him muttering something about "This isn't a McDonald's Drive-Thru" as he put me under.

They gave me all sorts of great drugs for pain but I never really needed them. I took one and all I did all night was agree with anything my wife said. They should put that as a warning on the bottle.

"I got the gas passer " image

He must have been passing Mc'Donald's gas!

When I had my wound opened I was already off the morphine. It was 14 days after my operation and I was ready to go home. Didn't happen. After they flushed the wound with water they hooked me up to a vacuum pump to suck out the impurities. It was nasty. After a week I got to go home with a portable pump and a nurse would come by every other day to clean the wound. I made sure I took plenty of pain medicine before she got here. Not something I would wish on my worst enemies.

Now I know where the term "warm and fussy" originated. Morphine.
Anyway to stay on topic. The head surgeon did buy a tC from our store. That was before I knew her and the guy that did the actual cutting came and bought a Sienna for the wife about a year later. He was sent to Irag right after my second recurrence and I saw him when he got back and looked at me like he had just seen a ghost. Great guy. After a year and a half he still remembered the note I left on the back of my business card. He was in surgery and I stopped by to say hi. He is truly a great American hero. Saved lots of lives in Iraq and I'm sure he saw a few leave this world too. God bless them.

Oldfarmer, Glad this subject has come up. Since it looks like I might be getting a 2009 I thought I might order rather than take dealer stock to ensure I get what I want.

It seems dealer or the GM or whoever does the ordering of inventory never gets what I’m looking for.

A lot of cars come with too much bling.

    Who does do the ordering?

"...I might order rather than take dealer stock to ensure I get what I want..."

That was my thought too. The Pontiac dealer was the only one who didn't seem to have a problem with it. he said he could get any car in any configuration I wanted within 3 weeks. Nissan wouldn't even answer my question. Honda didn't even want me in the store. Mitsubishi told me they had stopped making 2008s in December of 2007. :confuse:

In the end, the only dealer who was willing to work with me was the one who's car was at the bottom of my list. I accepted the dealer trade from Mitsu because it was set up exactly the way I wanted.

As to why cars come with so much bling, all I can say is it's because that's where the money is. From the dealer's point of view he has sales people to convince you that all that stuff has value. Why not go for the highest profit.

If you insist on ordering, expect resistance.

This is what I have come to understand; Non domestic dealers will not special order, period. GM dealers will order for you anytime. Most Ford dealers will order any time you ask. Chrysler I don’t know.

If this is not correct, anyone, please let me know.

I just look at some of the last of the year leftovers and wonder “what were they thinking”. Some are nice and look great, but not for me.

    "This is going to hurt."

That is inhumane treatment. In this day and age, they could have easily given you something for the pain---especially after what you had been through. My doctor told me that the kidney stone attacks are equated with a woman having a baby. That pain will bring you to your knees and make you cry. In fact, the first attack was so bad that I had to have oxygen on the way to the hospital. I, too, had morphine, which did help. Actually, the percocet tablets worked better than any other pain killer. Still, you have to be careful because they are very addictive.

"It’s kind of frightening to think there are people out there in places of power that are so self absorbed, self serving and selfish. . ."

    You bet.

I remember when I used to think that the people who ran things actually deserved to. That was many years ago. What I've learned since is that type A politicians trump competent people almost every time. Plus which, they move fast -- it's hard to hit a moving target. Generally, they've moved on within ~18 months -- either their boss or themselves will have changed jobs before anyone has to discuss the POR form done a year earlier. I've spent most of my career taking years to fix things and put permanent (if there is such a thing) fixes in place. I'm beyond stupid, given the current corporate environment.

The real stars promise the moon and move on before it's apparent that no one could have delivered it. The person in question in this post thread (the a**hole boss) will probably get a promotion, partly because he's likely working for someone equally as, well, let's say, similar.

I guess she figured I was still on the morphine. Oh well, I just hope I don't go through that again. I've done the kidney stones also. Not a lot of fun either. It took them forever to find as every time I would go see the doctor nothing would show up in my urine. It was until I had a female doctor that she gave me a big bottle to take home and pee in it for 5 days and took it back. That's when they found them. I trust female doctors over male docs. Females tend to listen to what you say. :)

Thanks for commiserating and the well wishes. I'm more mad at myself for making a wrong decision and only looking at the dollars instead of the character of the people involved. I left a relatively high profile job, with a well-respected company, with high character people to take the last gig.

Funny/sad thing is, the company is running out of money (I was told finances were sound). My job was to find more funding and/or look for potential suitors. What I didn't know was the Pres didn't exactly have a good reputation in the marketplace. And that the company had a habit of missing all sorts of product, business metric deadlines before I joined. That made the company a very tough sell. Few people (very few) who could have helped, invested, or show interest in the company, were willing to partner up.

The Prez, taking a few months off to go on vacation during such a critical time for the company didn't exactly give the "warm and fuzzies" either. There were only two people who could have done the "big meeting"....me and the Prez. Bottom line, I couldn't. He wouldn't. Somebody had to take the fall. That somebody ended up being me. There were all sorts of other signs that things weren't sunny and bright in Mayberry. I just didn't recognize them.

In work, just like buying cars, deal with people you trust.

Since I've got some time on my hands now.......back to cars.

I've never run into any GM or Ford dealership who wasn't willing to special order any vehicle in exactly the configuration you wanted. I don't know what the cut-off date is for ordering '08s (I suspect that time has passed for '08s), but '09s should be in the pipeline by now.

There may be some exceptions to that (like a King Cobra). But, even cars like a
Z06 can be ordered directly from the dealer in any configuration you want. As a side note, anyone who is a 'vette fan (or even if you're mildly curious), you owe it to yourself to make a trip to the Corvette factory and museum in Bowling Green, KY. While I've never ordered, bought or owned one, I have gone on a tour of the 'vette factory and been to the Covette museum (where they can, for a price, deliver your new 'vette). I've never seen such pride, craftsmanship and care in building cars as I saw there.

For the likes of Toyota, Honda and Nissan, they don't seem to like to do special orders. Weird, because they make Accords, Camrys, and Altimas no further than 5 hours from where I live. Yet, the dealerships prefer to sell what's in stock.

Lots of reasons for that. Mainly, it costs more to order and ship ONE car, than it is to order a bunch of them in the most popular configurations.

While I've never waited more than about 4-5 weeks to special order a domestic (which I've done 3 times). Whenever I've inquired about doing the same from Toyota and Honda (never tried to order a Nissan), I was always quoted 12 weeks for delivery. And, their dealerships were never really happy about the prospect of doing so. They'd rather do a dealer trade or to find something that's already incoming.

    >been to the Covette museum (where they can, for a price, deliver your new 'vette).

I've seen at least one person leaving the museum in a new, new Corvette. I stop at the Shell station next to the drive to the museum for coffee or/and fuel. I've also seen two guys driving spanking new Vettes there fueling up. One was a Z06 (before I knew what it was). I suspect those were being fueled for delivery now--the guys didn't look like Vette owner potentials.

I've never been able to take time to go through the museum on our trips. My wife votes no and my 17 year old knows he'd never get one.

    I agree....but I was not confused ;)

I agree that most Americans get only 2 weeks.
I agree that most don't take all of their vacation.
I disagree that their works takes priority over their small extended weekend vacation. I have seen important business meetings being postponed for over a month (scheduling conflict) because the person is going to go on vacation those couple of days that everybody else is available.
I have also seen project managers go on vacation just when the project is scheduled to go live because he had planned his vacation much earlier and he cannot (will not) reschedule. Maybe he should have planned his project as good as his vacation plans??

As far as Europe is concerned, I don't have first hand information, but I will tell you that shutting off the plants (scheduled and nobody will be at work) is not the same as taking a personal vacation and not being available to make important decisions when everybody else is available and waiting just for your yes/no input.

    I always order a car.

I have never had any resistance from any dealer, even toyota.

I don't have to pay for a lot of options I do not want. Dealers are very good at packing in a lot of bling when they order the car.

A salesman on this forum said they wanted more on a lot car as they had more in it. Dealer incentives can make a difference if they have what you want.

My next car will be an ordered car as I never see what I want on the lot. Most people will take a lot car so they can get it home much faster. I want what I want and not what the dealer wanted.

I have gotten good prices by ordering a car, just not the incentives. With the extra options that cars on the lot have if negates any incentives.

It's no big secret that dealers have their inventory on a bank note and pay "floor plan"interest on the cars in stock. A dealer with 250 cars in stock will still have 250 cars in stock after writing up your factory order. Incentives both to consumer and /or dealer may not be the same when the vehicle is finally delivered. In the case of a foreign manufacturer such as Saab, lead time from order to delivery can be as long as 3 months.

For the last week I have been working with this lady who just came back from Iraq. She has been in the Army for 20 years and gets a new car every 3 years. Well she came in last week looking for her Murano. The "military broker" told her it was here last week and that we have the car. Well her vehicle wasn't here and she was cool about it. We told her we would call her when it arrived. We knew it would come eventually come since we had the CO and the paper work.

As we are looking over her paper work we see that we could of saved her $1200 plus they didn't giver her $1500 rebates that she qualified for. For a total of $2700...

We didn't tell her to ruin her day or anything but she was cool about that too and didn't seem to mind.

Now all of this work I am doing is free.... It is known as a "courtesy delivery".... Now I don't have a problem helping out one of our armed forces.... It is actually one of those "good feeling moments" you get for doing good for someone else. And heck she was probably doing alot more for me than I was for her.

Anyway I talked with a couple of other guys I know at other dealerships in the area asking if they had to ever participate in this program. Well in fact one of the guys I worked with in the past now works at Volkswagon dealership and he had did one reacently. He also could of saved the military personal about $2500.

Yes I understand that this program provides a service and everyone should be paid. I just think of you know someone who is thinking about doing it.... Maybe they should try a dealership first and maybe save some money. :shades:
