We're leery of you and you're sick of us. Ain't life grand?!
Well, yes, yes it is. I've definitely taken what's been posted here over the past few years into account when I gird my loins to acquire a new ride. I posted the shortcomings of the particular store I had to deal with last March. Those folks couldn't find any orifice on their bodies with both hands and a magnifying glass.
In a perfect world, one or more of you folks would have been running an Acura store in the Phoenix area.
edit: i found this comment doing a google search: "The back doors are child-lock standard, which means by pulling on the door handle, the doors will not open. The back doors will then only unlock after someone in the front has opened one of their doors (or pushed the unlock button). Now to make sure no one is trapped back there, you can physically pull the knob up on the back doors to unlock them, I guess you just have to hope the kids give-up after trying to open the doors with the handles. Leave it to my wonderful friends at Edmunds to provide the ammunition that I need to purchase a car.
On the other hand Richard, there's just as many reasons not to purchase a car at this time. A few might be that the 2010s will be out soon and the GM will probably get dropped, and 09s will be even cheaper, if there's any undertakers who haven't grabbed all the black ones. another is there could be some new models available next year that are more up to date, and maybe you should try a Fusion - they are supposed to be pretty competitive (I am supposed to get a rental one in Florida for February - although I never get what I am supposed to get??? :confuse: )
Since you keep your cars a long time you might want to be sure Ford will make it through the recession/depression which could last from 6 months (not likely) to 1 or 2 years, and some say 3! I am not trying to disuade (please check the spelling for me Richard) you from the GM, I kind of like those old boats, but there's a lot to mull over (mull, mull, mull, there's an interesting word).
(I am supposed to get a rental one in Florida for February - although I never get what I am supposed to get??? )
The fine print usually says something like this:
Midsize car - Ford Fusion (or similar)
That (or similar) means you can get anything in the same "size class". Rental size classes almost always run smaller than reality, too. The Fusion might actually be considered "Full Size" by rental standards.
Long story short - rental companies have no idea what will be on their lot tomorrow, much less in February. However, you can ask them to note your request for a Fusion on the reservation. That way, if one comes in that day, they'll try to hold it for you.
Let us know how it drives if you get one - joel, what are your thoughts on the Fusion?
You are correct. There are many reasons not to buy a car now. I was saddened to read yesterday that the '09 Grand Marquis will be the last one. I had not known this. It was in one of the 68 reviews that I read on the Grand Marquis. I did find it interesting that out of 68 owners, only three were not pleased with the GM. It would be difficult to top that ratio of reviews on any car I would think. I also found it interesting that the owners boasted about the safe handling of the car---since we had discussed the SC here at length. Naturally, all 68 owners noted the comfort of the car and the floating ride. The two negatives were the gas consumption compared to other cars, and the resale value. With the resale values so low, many owners suggested buying a one or two year old GM to get more bang for your buck, but still end up with a luxury car. Several owners stated that they got the luxury of the Town Car without the price tag. That had been my thought as well. Most owners were also pleased with the low cost of maintenance and the easy access to simple parts for repairs. That's a nice plus.
The fact that this is the last of the GM's made a definite impact on my thinking. I don't care for owning a car out of production. That's what happened to me last year when I was considering the Solara convertible. I don't know why I pick the ones that are going out of production. Still, I love the Grand Marquis. It isn't totally out of the picture at this point. As you say, there is much to mull over.
Yes, you do need another "s" in "dissuade".
BTW, I'm not the only one who wants a black car. Mack wrote to me yesterday that they are getting a new Infinity. His wife wanted black but I think that they are going to get a white one in stock. Mack is off the chemo and feeling better. The bad part is that his tumors have begun to grow again. He came down to Duke Hospital to have discussions on some new trial treatments. Some are pretty risky and he has made no decisions. I'm concerned about him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He wanted to be remembered to all of you here.
Hey, Richard! After all of the end of the Solara talk Toyota kept it at least another year for just the convertible. I don't think Mercury is in any danger of extending the GM beyond 09 however.
Say hi to Mack for me. He's indeed in thoughts and prayers.

Richard, thanks for the update on Mack. The news could have been better but he is a fighter and I think he will be OK. Sure wish he would post here again.
In watching the local ads in the KC area it appears that the deals are not as good as they were just before the end of the year (and before GM got their bail out money). By GM I mean General Motors, not Grand Marquis.
New car buying right now is something you have to be very, very careful with. Some are good deals and some are not. The automotive world is certainly going thru a shake-up right now. Go drive a Hyundai Genesis if you want a nice surprise.
Forget finding a babysitter. Bring your two year old twins with you! m Make sure one of them has the ability to scream at the top of his lungs. Encourage them to play in the cars that are in the showroom. Show them how to SLAM car doors and make sure they are able to find the horn.
It's best if they are hungry and need a diaper change.
Show them how their salesperson's calculator can do double duty as a hammer!
Bring their filthy scummy car seats so you can fasten them into the four different used cars you want to drive. We just love this!
Before leaving (without a car) make sure the chocolate milk one of them brought get's dumped on the salesperson's desk.
These tips are just great. If I was in the market for a car I would definitely print up these suggestions and take them with me. I would get all the car folks in a good mood and then have my way with them. I especially like the one about throwing your own keys up on the roof.

Will do - have been. Say hello for me, too! I miss those stories...Jim Gridell was possibly my favorite. You remember, he was the one who bought that Sienna and then...
Fact of the matter is life would be boring if every customer came in, went for a 15 minute test drive, signed the papers and drove home. We wouldn't have any fantastic "sales stories".
That's what happened to me last year when I was considering the Solara convertible.
That's quite a difference from the GM. Do you have any regrets you didn't get the Solara? If both were still in production which would you prefer? If you like the idea of a convertible, and you like the feel of a sixties type car, then you have to try a BMW 3 Series Cabriolet (hardtop convertible). Not necessarily to buy it, but to just give it a test run. It can't hurt, you are in the market so there should be no guilt about sampling it, even if it isn't suitable it might give you a better idea of what you are really looking for. When I got my first BMW I really didn't expect to buy it...I was very negative about actually buying one, but one test drive and there was no going back.
It also sounds like the advice given to many patrons of District Court. Bring ALL of your brats; they need to get familiar with the place. After all, they will be in Juvenile Court before you know it!

>Nick, I'm surprised at you. I'm going to spend all of that time negotiating for a car, finally tell him the color,
You check the color on the lot / online inventory. But do not tell the salesman. Sorry if my remark was not so clear.
You talk to the salesman about all the features you want in the car. Then ask which colors they have. He might say they have 1 White, 2 Blue and a 1 Black. Just say "ok", and continue to negotiate. You know the color you want is there, but the salesman is not sure which one you will pick up. Along the way also ask if any color has a premium associated with it or not. Again, the salesman does not know your choice and will be shooting in the dark if he says "Yes". Then you ask him which color is it? Now he is trapped. Should I say White? Or Blue or Black? Chances are to get the deal going on, he will say none have a premium.
Today I stopped by my local BMW dealer, and it just so happen that they just took a 2003 540i in trade. Six speed manual tranny, Sport Package, Cold Weather Package, Topaz Blue/Gray leather. only 75K miles. It's a bit bigger than I like, but it's a very sweet car. Many people think that the E39 5ers are still a better car than its successor the current E60.The '03 Sports also have the M5 body kit. If I can get it for the Mazdaspeed + no more than $2K out the door it will likely be mine.

First, please tell MACK he's in everyone's thoughts and prayers.
I've been following the saga of you Grand Marquis purchase. What are your reservations about owning a car in its last year of production? I'm sure parts are readily & cheaply available.
My 2001 Honda Prelude Type SH (October 2001 Build Date) is one of the last Preludes ever made. I've had no part availability problems at all. My only problem is that GENUINE HONDA PARTS are expensive (the 4 "H" logo centercaps were stolen from my wheels & cost almost $50 each).

Richard....yes, if you do contact Mack again, I just want to extend more thoughts and prayers to add to the others here. As soon as I think times are tough for me, personally, I realize it could be a whole lot worse. Hopefully, he comes out of this stronger....better!
So, the GM is going away. I know you kind of had your heart set on one. But, if you like the thought of that sort of ride, there are some options.
An Avalon would probably fit the bill on the Toyota side. The afore mentioned Buick Lucerne/Lacrosse. Acura TL isn't selling all that well. Nice cars. Many don't like the redesign (I do, though). Someone else mentioned the Ford Taurus....probably the closest "feel" to the GM, but updated with all the most modern safety "stuff". Heck, I bet you could make a whale of a deal on a Lincoln MKZ right now.
An Avalon would probably fit the bill on the Toyota side. The afore mentioned Buick Lucerne/Lacrosse. Acura TL
GG has some good cars to compare Richard. Might also try a Lexus and a Lexus SAV RX350. Even though your heart is kind of set on a GM trying some of these cars might alter your thoughts or confirm your original thoughts.
Oops. I think that I confused you. I didn't mean to compare the Grand Marquis to the Solara convertible. When I found out that they weren't going to produce the Solara convertible any longer, I purchased a Chrysler Sebring Touring convertible. It's our other car, the Explorer, that I would trade for the GM.
Yes, the BMW 3 Series is a great automobile. That would have been my ultimate choice for a convertible. It would also have been a bit more change.
My reservations included what you mentioned---parts. Still, I'm sure that Ford would have plenty of them for years to come. I haven't completely ruled the car out.
Thanks for mentioning the alternative options. You listed one that I have thought about---the Lincoln MKZ. It's not one of the old tanks, but it might give that floating feeling. I haven't driven one of them, but have considered doing so. You're right. There could be a pretty good deal there.
To all of you guys: Thanks for the comments about Mack. I'll be sure and tell him.

As for your Grand Marquis, I say just go out there and buy it. However be prepared to keep it for ever as the reasale value will be low, and realistically, those cars are tech dinosaurs compared to everything else out on the market.
Not to say they're bad cars, but they appeal to a very tiny fraction of car buying public. I'd love to have one, but not for $20k. I actually almost got a civillian Crown Vic that came in on a trade for about $5k a few years ago. It was I think 3-4 years old.
There's something charming to me about driving a boat with overboosted steering and lazy boy recliner for your front seat.
He can go to Ebay Motors, click on "Collector Cars"
The have a lot of old cop cars for sale that he can buy for a fraction of what he would pay for that Mercury. Heavy Duty suspension and other mods that actually make a pretty tight ride.
Besides, he can scare the hell out of people on the freeway.
I went shopping with my wife this afternoon in the village. She was scouting out the sales items. We walked by the costume shop. One of the costumes in the window was a policeman's outfit. If I bought the cop car off of ebay, I could also buy the outfit and really scare some people on the road. :P
Now many of your suggestions work better with boys which, despite four kids, I have not managed to come up with one of those.
However, those with boys have told me it works something like this....
And you find out interesting things when you have sons, like...
1.) A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep.
2! .) If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite.
3.) A 3-year old Boy's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.
4.) If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42 pound Boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four walls of a 20x20 ft. room.
5.) You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way.
6.) The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.
7.) When you hear the toilet flush and the words 'uh oh', it's already too late.
8.) Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke, and lots of it.
9.) A six-year old Boy can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36- year old Man says they can only do it in the movies.
10.) Certain Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old Boy.
11.) Play dough and microwave should not be used in the same sentence.
12.) Super glue is forever.
13.) No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool you still can't walk on water.
14.) Pool filters do not like Jell-O.
15.) VCR's do not eject 'PB & J' sandwiches even though TV commercials show they do.
16.) Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.
17.) Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.
18.) You probably DO NOT want to know what that odor is.
19.) Always look in the oven before you turn it on; plastic toys do not like ovens.
20.) The fire department in Austin , TX has a 5-minute response time.
21.) The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.
22.) It will, however, make cats dizzy.
23.) Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.
24.) 80% of Women will pass this on to almost all of their friends, with or without kids.
25.) 80% of Men who read this will try mixing the Clorox and brake fluid.

A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep.
Lets see 4 inches is .333333 feet. 2000x.33333 = 666.666 so 2000 sq. ft 4 inches deep is 666.666 cubic feet of water. There are 7.48 gallons in a cubic foot so 666.666 cubic feet equals 4,986.66 gallons.
King sized water beds hold about 195 gallons or 26 cubic feet of water. That would cover a 2000 Sq Ft home in .15 inches of water.

Actually, you've pointed out what happens when numbers enter any discussion -- most people take them at face value with neither the ability nor the desire to see if they really make sense.
Not that the purpose of the list was to make sense. That's the fun part.
97.312593% of all the numbers read/seen in the various media are made up and/or appear much more accurate/precise than they really are.
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a piece of chalk, cut it with an axe, then report it as gospel.
Just saw an ad for Hyundai and they said you can bring the car back within one year if you lose your job during that time
Now that is marketing!!!!
Did anyone see 60 minutes. Oil at $140 a barrel was just a big scam. The investment houses were bidding it up. Wasn't there committees to investigate the oil companies? We all knew it was a rip off, but how come the government can't find this out and it takes 60 Minutes to expose it?
President Reagan used to answer many reporters' questions ,to their satisfaction ,with numbers. In later years, he said that it didn't matter if the numbers weren't really correct, because most people are too lazy to do the research to find out.
$140+ oil, a big scam. that was old news here on carspace months ago, including the reason for it. i did not watch the 60 minutes episode. let me guess, it was speculators. the reason the bottom fell out of prices: you actually had to be able to take delivery of the oil. am i close?

Not to say they're bad cars, but they appeal to a very tiny fraction of car buying public. I'd love to have one, but not for $20k. I actually almost got a civillian Crown Vic that came in on a trade for about $5k a few years ago. It was I think 3-4 years old.
There's something charming to me about driving a boat with overboosted steering and lazy boy recliner for your front seat.

Use your imagination. 7 year olders bring their own unique talents to the table.
They can fight over the window seats.
Open the doors on all 4 door cars and activate the child safety latches
Bring daddy some wires they found in the engine compartment of that open car
Play the "You Poked me" game, followed by a rousing round of "Daddy, I'm bored."
Clean their chocolate-smeared hands on the nice cloth upholstery
See, Steve. If you use your imagination, even your 7 year olders can brighten the day of even the grumpiest salesperson.
He can go to Ebay Motors, click on "Collector Cars"
The have a lot of old cop cars for sale that he can buy for a fraction of what he would pay for that Mercury. Heavy Duty suspension and other mods that actually make a pretty tight ride.
Besides, he can scare the hell out of people on the freeway.

your wife can be the perp of you choice. well, maybe her choice.

Now that is marketing!!!!
Did anyone see 60 minutes. Oil at $140 a barrel was just a big scam. The investment houses were bidding it up. Wasn't there committees to investigate the oil companies? We all knew it was a rip off, but how come the government can't find this out and it takes 60 Minutes to expose it?

let me guess, it was speculators.
the reason the bottom fell out of prices: you actually had to be able to take delivery of the oil.
