Would you believe that I actually talked with Jack at the Titusville, FL dealership? He called me after I did the internet inquiry. Nice guy, but no negotiating with him.
As for compromising, maybe not. I saw a black "Police Interceptor" on the local lot . I began to think about driving around with that color GM.
richard....I like that nice round $15K number too. For all intents and purposes, that GM is practically new. Score it for $15K, and you've got a very nice car, at a great price, that will last a very long time.
That price puts it in stripped Corolla territory. :surprise:
A little off topic, I mentioned that I'm loaning the Tahoe to my neighbor. He uses it a few times/week.
I got into it to head to a SuperBowl party on Sunday. In the back, I noticed a box with some fruit, cheeses, crackers, and some sauces. I knew it wasn't mine. So, I go over to the neighbor's house and tell him he must have forgotten some of his groceries. He said the box was for me.
Yes, I saw those in Fayetteville. Still, if I drive 30 more minutes I can save $1,800 on the identical one in Wilson. To clarify my other post: I am shying away from the black after seeing that "Police Interceptor" on the local lot. The Smokestone is a softer color and looks nice with the cream leather interior. After all of my talk about the black, I guess it pays for an elderly soul to think things through. It just takes us a little longer to process.
It's great to have nice neighbors---for both of you. Reminds me of neighbors back in the '50's and '60's. We used to leave the keys in the car, and the house unlocked. Never gave it a second thought.

That sounds good, and is a safer color than black. I was thinking it will probably come out looking good and black might look to much like a police car (especially if the wheel discs fly off). I didn't intend to say it but when I used the word "safer" it made me think lighter colors are actually safer as well, and since I am the head of the safety committee here, smokestone gets the Safety Committee (me) Seal of Approval.
Just don't get that washed out blue color I see around here.
By the way, my rental Fusion is dull red. Red is a good color for a rental car. Since there aren't too many red cars it's easier to find as you start to lose your memory down here in FL.
In short, the Fusion is good value for the money. It is competent for the money. Comfortable, lots of room, fairly smooth, nice instrumentation. I don't like the bulge on the hood and lack of vision for the front fenders (not a big issue), the rear vision which has a window placed high up. The instrument panel under the steering wheel is very low and I have it my knee there a few times - very paneful. It is not fun to drive but pleasant enough . Overall though, it is a good value for the money. It would probably make an excellent second car (I would like to see the long term reliability reports though because I have a feeling it isn't as tight or as strong as say a Camry or Accord - door panels are minimal etc). For my full review see post #38379. One more thought...I don't think you could go wrong buying a Fusion, but I would certainly want to compare it to a few other similar cars.
Wow... what an endorsement. I bet that review makes joel's heart all warm and fuzzy. reallylol My rule of thumb when buying cars was that a car should be equal to half your income. When I was making $30,000 a year I would buy a car worth approx $15000 (I am very conservative). I would try to pay it off in 3 years. Now of course people just want to know what their monthly payment will be. Anyway, I digress, what I am trying to say is some people have a certain budget to spend on a car. If a Fusion costs $22,000 and that's what you could afford, then I think it would be a pretty good buy. If you can put more money into a car then I would want something better built, more solid, more enjoyment driving, more feel of the road - better steering. But for basic transportation it's pretty good value. As I explained in post 38379, I would try to come up with a few more dollars or go with a used 3 Series BMW or C Class - but that's just me
I drove a rental Fusion last year was impressed with the car for the most part. It didn't have the playskool looking interior I had seen on older Ford products. It accelerated nicely and handled well. The deal-breaker for me was the over-boosted steering at highway speeds. It was much, much too light for my taste.
RE: Fusion: It accelerated nicely and handled well. The deal-breaker for me was the over-boosted steering at highway speeds.
I agree about acceleration and handling is good (not great). The steering is better than most Fords from the past, but it is still a bit loose, not what I would call "like riding on rails".
I was driving around Florida in my Ford Fusion Rental listening to Shnitt or Schmitt. These guys amaze me that they can talk and talk, and they have all the answers. Well, I thought of a brilliant way to get the economy back on track (or should I say rails).
This is easy, simple, and billions won't get lost in schemes that will not work, or pork barreling.
The government allows all purchases of goods to become tax deductible for say 6 months. Would people go out and stock up on cars, TVs, clothes, hunting gear etc? I know I would. It would cost a lot but every dollar would be stimulating the economy and put people back to work. What's the downside? Giving people tax breaks doesn't work, in this atmosphere people just hold on to every dollar they get. If we want people to spend give them a reason. If necessary, we could put a maximum on this deduction, like up to 25%, but it seems to be the fastest most direct way to get the economy moving.
Ford has liked very light steering for a long time - at least as far back as my dad's 66 Fairlane and maybe as far back as the 50s. They've gotten less so but it's still there.
This might be good for you sales guys - the Senate just passed a bill that would make interest on car loans and sales tax on cars deductible on income taxes. If that gets all the way through maybe it helps out.

In any major metro area you can find 20 dealers of the same non-lux brand within one hour of drive and usually three-to-five of lux brands.
Doing the math, I live in a metro area with 8.5 million people. Say one half drive and they buy a car on the average of once every 7 years and 10% of them buy one particular brand that has 20 dealerships each dealership should average 250-300 sales a month. So I would say that depending on the metro area 20 dealerships in that area may be doable.

I can tell that your brother got all of the good taste on your side of the family---a Town Car and a Chrysler Sebring convertible? What a guy with style! To tell you the truth, I started out looking at the Town Cars because I used to have one. Then I discovered that I could have the same luxuries on a GM for half the price. You know that I am about as much a tightass as you are.
This time your math is failing you, Snake (actually, it's not the math, it's the assumptions of your model). In your model, ALL people in your area who drive buy new cars only and, and have an income to support a new car every seven years. Considering that median income in US is in proximity of 30K+, I don't see how. Not to mention all those used car places and divisions of franchised dealerships. And what about those who buy used cars individually. No, Snake - it is not doable, not even as a long shot.
That combo is fine but it ain’t what you had me scouting for. :confuse:
Now that you are back in the Burgh, talk is cheap.

Whereas, I set my sights on a given car and don’t change my mind. Although I do have to club the poor guy like a baby seal to get the deal I must have to drive it over the curb.

Actually I checked on wikepedia; Vinyl roof refers to a vinyl covering for an automobile's top. This covering was originally designed to give the appearance of a convertible to models with a fixed roof, but eventually it evolved into a styling statement in its own right. Vinyl roofs were most popular in the American market, and they are considered one of the period hallmarks of 1970s Detroit cars. vinyl roof
I think the cloth rooves (roofs?) are the ones that are trying to look more like a convertible. Why would someone spend money to make their hardtop try to look like a convertible - it seldom looks like a convertible anyway because they are usually on 4 door sedans that can't be convertibles?
I agree. It will sit there a bit. Well, here's the deal as of this morning. I took yours and oldfarmer's advice. I offered $15k on the $15,972. He came back at $15,500. I countered back with $15,250 and we split the doc fee. His final offer out the door is $16,200. I figure that between the price of the car and the taxes, fees, & tags that he has dropped another $703 from the original price. That's about as good as I can get from him. I'm thinking it over. Anyone's thoughts? Also remember that the car had been discoounted last week from $16,780.
Richard, I said offer $15k at post #38403. I think it is a bargooon! The best deal of the century. 10 years of driving for about $1000 a year after trade-in at the end of 10 years.
Keep in mind Ford might not be around then (parts will probably be available, they might come from China), and gas will probably go up again.......but I paid almost that much for my 1992 Cavalier.

I have been shopping for a CPO'd BMW lately and have come across a couple of things that got me thinking.
1) Many of the salespeople state 'I can make that offer to the manager and see if we can get it accepted." Does the salesperon really not know the bottom line on the vehicle and thus not able to determine if the deal is good. Just curious on this one.
2) I am in trading in my current vehicle. After receiving numbers from two different salespeople I stated, "its a few thousand more than I am willing to part with right now" on the overall deal. In both cases they offered me another $1000 on trade if I paid another $1000 on their vehicle. Please correct me if I am wrong, but this is identical to the original offer, why would I accept that?
Yeah, you having second thoughts about the car or the price? Price sounds really good... you've "jipped" the guy down like a pro. If you really like the car, and it is what you want, then I would say pull the trigger and buy the car. :shades:
1. Depending on place, but most have system that person who speaks with you has minimal power in setting the price. It is more common in upscale places that salesperson pencils their deal, but still it is the manager who approves everything. 2. Yes - of course it is. When you add thousand here and subtract there, it's zero, isn't it? It's their way of saying "good luck" or checking if your math skills exceed those of third grade (I'm being generous ) .
In both cases they offered me another $1000 on trade if I paid another $1000 on their vehicle.
They must be testing your I.Q. to see if they can take advantage of you. I would tend to think they are insulting you, and I would try another place.
Another thing is, when we bought our BMWs a year and a half ago, the salesman did all the numbers. He could decide without running to the manager. We also checked out Audi and in dealing with Mercedes salespeople, I have never seen the salesperson need to get a final ok from the manager. I can see where it might be good for the dealership to check out that they aren't going to lose money and check for mistakes, but this only gives the dealership the upper hand, because they can check the deal over and make changes, you have already signed it. I would much prefer to do everything with the salesperson....and it is more professional.
It all depends on what you want to pay. If you’re willing to cave for $250 then give the guy his price.. If your bottom line requires the guy to drop his price by $250 then you sit and wait for a phone call that will probably come within a few days. However, don’t let your guard down while you’re waiting for that call. Keep looking, you might change your mind again and want that nice Sea Foam Green since you’re prone to that sort of thing by your own admission.
Also remember that the car had been discoounted (Just look at how you spelled that word. Your dues otta go up for that) last week from $16,780.
C’mon, you’ve been around long enough to know that it’s not what someone is taking off of their original price but what you are paying for that item. Cars or a pair of jeans, it’s what you are spending not what you are saving. I thought we learned you this when you first showed up here at Edmunds. :surprise:

Keep looking, you might change your mind again and want that nice Sea Foam Green since you’re prone to that sort of thing by your own admission.
Also remember that the car had been discoounted (Just look at how you spelled that word. Your dues otta go up for that) last week from $16,780.
C’mon, you’ve been around long enough to know that it’s not what someone is taking off of their original price but what you are paying for that item. Cars or a pair of jeans, it’s what you are spending not what you are saving. I thought we learned you this when you first showed up here at Edmunds. :surprise:
Don’t make this transaction any harder than it has to be.

If this fake moonroof stuff catches on, will it be viewed the same as people putting canvas roofs and gold trim on the Cadillacs and Park Avenues and Chrysler 300s? Will people make fun of the owners? :P
