Quick update. Day 5 and since I am forgetting about my car I am getting more used to the Fusion. It is alright. Still don't like vague steering, minimal door panels etc., rear view vision, and that protrusion under the steering wheel, but a fair rental once you get used to it.
Reminds me of my teen years in the 60s. Cars with air conditioning were very rare. So, on hot days we would drive around with all the windows up and act like we were comfortable, to make it look like we had air conditioned cars!
That fake moonroof is classic. Do people complain taht it cuts down fake headroom?
For some reason in the past year I'm noticing a bunch of cars with fake portholes. Not just Buicks either! I saw a PT Cruiser with a particularly outlandish set.
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
Now, now. Don't get your drawers in a wad. Perhaps I didn't express myself clearly enough. I do know that it is not what you save, but it's what you spend that counts. The only reason that I said that the car had been discounted from $16,780 to $15,972 was because most dealerships want $18k-$19k for the same vehicle. The discounted figure just saves me from having to negotiate more. As for the $250 that separates us, I won't sit and wait for the telephone call. Unlike you, I don't grind to that extreme.
As far as I am concerned, the deal is far from over. Yes, we agree on the price of the car, but the other 50% of the deal is the trade. As some of you have advised in the past, you do the car deal first and the trade is a separate deal entirely. Though I have never tried that plan, I am using it this time. We'll see if it works. They will probably just give less on the trade. That's ok. I know my way home.
You've got a real nerve inserting an extra letter in one of my words to make it look as if I made an error. :P
As Mack would say, "TO BE CONTINUED". BTW, he sent me pictures today of his new car. It is really pretty. In one of the pictures, he is standing by the car. He looks real good. His hair has come back and he has gained a little weight.
... I was at my doctors office last week and saw the most bizarre sight.
A Mercury GM with a faux vinyl roof.
Except ...
.... this wasn't any old GM, this was the Marauder - the performance model with the big chrome wheels and the blackout trim. Meant to look like an undercover cop car.
Was just about the dorkiest thing I'd ever seen.
"Yeah, lemme take that cool black evil looking one over there, and, hey, while you're at it, could you install a fake vinyl roof so people think I've got a multiple personality disorder?"
It takes all kinds.
Richard, here's hoping you get what you want for the Explorer in trade.
Hi,I have a 2007 Honda odyssey LX -minivan with only 1300 miles, totally paid off[no loan/lien],titled in my name,,immaculate condition.I want to trade it in for a used 2007/2008 Toyota sienna minivan with about 15-20 k miles- as an equal trade in. The reason is I find the Odyssey seats really uncomfortable. So how do I approach this with the salespeople? Do I send an internet request stating this giving all details or do I call them or do I directly go to the dealership to finalize? I think the easiest way probably would be by internet through the internet salesperson/manager? So,What are your thoughts or strategies on this? Thanks.

I was never a fan of throwing in the trade after the price of the new car is reached. It just drags out the final deal. If you know your bottom line and I’m sure you do, cut to the chase and make an OTD offer. I am not necessarily a fan of that either because I know how to calculate the tax and then add on the title stuff. Here in PA the doc fee is only $55 but if it were hundreds like I’ve heard about, especially in Florida, then maybe an OTD price is the way to go.

Hi,I have a 2007 Honda odyssey LX -minivan with only 1300 miles
I’ve heard of low miles but that’s ridiculous for an 07’.
The reason is I find the Odyssey seats really uncomfortable.
Don’t let ‘isell’ hear you say that.
So,What are your thoughts or strategies on this?
From everything I’ve ever heard about dealers doing even-up trades is that it’s almost impossible. The only way you have a snowballs chance in hell of getting it is to take the van in so they can see it. Dealers ALWAYS hear that a person’s trade is in ‘immaculate condition”. The only way to prove it is for them to see it. You’ll never make the deal over the phone/internet.
If you feel the only way this deal can be made is even-up, stick to your guns and if that doesn’t work, you’re going to have to get a pillow.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi,I have a 2007 Honda odyssey LX -minivan with only 1300 miles
This is my opinion only. Dealers generally aren't in the business of trading even. So, I would look at ads and see what the Honda is worth, it should be in demand and get a good price considering the mileage and it's popularity.
Then sell it privately. Generally, this is not the best strategy but since you aren't in a hurry, and the car should sell fast and easy, I think you will get more for it this way.
Then, when you have the cash (and I do mean cash even if you have to go to the bank with the buyer) in hand, you can shop for the exact car you want.
Another thing to consider is to have the seats redone or perhaps there's after market seats. I say this because I talked my dad into getting a 1964 Galaxie XL because of the "bucket seats". The seats were extremely uncomfortable for him, so he had them reupholstered, which helped. He ended up getting a 65 Galaxie with bench seats the next year though.
Good luck, that's a shame to trade in a car that is pretty well brand new.
For some reason in the past year I'm noticing a bunch of cars with fake portholes. Not just Buicks either! I saw a PT Cruiser with a particularly outlandish set.
Here in Kentuckiana it seems that portholes are a mandatory option on new Chargers and Chrysler 300s. A lot of the fart-can "tuner" dweebs stick them on their Civics/Eclipses/Celicas as well. I guess the portholes add 10-15 hp...

You are fortunate that in PA the doc fees only run $55. Down here they run from around $250-$400. That's why I offered to split the doc fee with him on the counter offer. At OTD for $16,200 he has $703 tied up in taxes, fees, and tags. I don't have the break down of those figures yet. You mentioned that you knew how to calculate the taxes for a car. Can you tell me the formula? It would be good to know that bit of information.
Richard....the price on the GM is good. When I was trying to peg the '96 I sold for my Mother I was looking around at all prices of GMs. I think the best I'd seen for one like you're dealing on was somewhere in the high $17s, low $18s, used. Again, that was a few months ago, but still, I don't think they've dropped in value THAT MUCH.
But, you're also right about the trade. Looks like they're going "skinny" on the GM. But, may low ball you on the trade.
Personally, I'd get 3 dealer quotes on a straight sale to their used car dept on your trade. You should get a pretty good idea what it's worth as a trade based on those quotes. Take that "trade" figure to the dealership that has the GM you want. See how they react. No one's beating down the doors at dealerships right now. You may be surprised how "good of a deal" they're willing to make. On the other hand, you'll find out in short order if you don't like the trade number...because you'll head for the door.
As for the $250 that separates us, I won't sit and wait for the telephone call. Unlike you, I don't grind to that extreme.
Yeah, Richard. $250 over 10 years is like $25 a year...not worth torturing one's self over.
How much do you expect to get for the trade? Is that the Explorer? This might be a good time to sell privately too. Of course you would want a conditional offer on the GM for at least 20 days, so it would still be available at that price should you sell. If it doesn't sell in 20 days they guaranty you a definite price. I am with Mr Munroe on this one, I wouldn't do a deal seperately, I would take the trade in and get a final price. You get your hopes up on the new car, then thay come in low on the trade-in. Why is life so complicated.
Yeah, Richard. $250 over 10 years is like $25 a year...not worth torturing one's self over.
Why not break it down per day over those same 10 years? It would seem even more petty.
That $250 in hand right now buys me and you know who a very nice dinner or 2 or 3.

I'm not expecting more than $5k on the trade. You have a good point about selling it privately, but I had rather not do that. I did that once years ago on an MGB and it drove me crazy. All of the dead end calls, the knocks on the door, etc. just turned me off to that avenue. You're right. Life can get complicated, but anything worth having is worth working toward. The advantage to this experience for me is that I don't have to have a new car. That alone keeps me in the driver's seat.
How much do you expect to get for the trade? Is that the Explorer?
One thing to remember on an Explorer trade in, is that new car Explorer sales has taken a real nose dive the last 2-3 years. The demand for mid-size and large SUV's is down. One of those things where "real" book doesn't come into play.
richard, I'd go over to the "Real World Trade In Values" discussion and get an estimate on how much you could get for your Explorer, if you haven't already done so.
Also, try to get Carmax to give you a price for your car. They usually do better than dealerships from what I hear/read.
Yeah, Richard. $250 over 10 years is like $25 a year...not worth torturing one's self over. Why not break it down per day over those same 10 years? It would seem even more petty. I didn't bring my calculator with me to Florida but I think it is less than 10 cents a day. The dealer has come down to a price that is at best breaking even. I think they could give you a price over the phone on what they will give you for the Explorer...not the best method but my experience has been they'll look up the price and that's what it is, no matter the condition of the car. At least you'll have some idea whether it is a clean deal or if you will have to do some fishing around to get more $s for the Explorer. You're right Richard, anything worthwhile doesn't come easy. JM, you can't look at every dollar spent as money not available for a meal. There comes a point where the dealer is doing everything possible to make this happen - I think he is going to lose on it but probably wants some cash for cars.
That's funny. But, if folks like my Bro/Sis-in law didn't get big, fat refunds by lending the Gov't money at 0%, then the Gov't wouldn't have the billions necessary to ensure that the Wall Street folks get their well-earned bonuses!

I was just thinking of a fantastic business down here in the sunshine state: Get this, installing phony convertible roofs with a phony moonroof put on as well. ......I'll clean up.
All the guys on here will get free mop n glo with every purchase !
That darn fake moon roof is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I just can't imagine being able to look at yourself in the mirror if you actually put one of these on your car. On the other hand I guess it would make a good joke.
I wonder if there is a fake moon roof cover to go on the inside? About the only thing worse would be having some type of push button automatic trans and having a fake 5 speed shifter mounted on the console.
Just for fun, the $250 is 0.0684931 cents per day for 10 years. I guess that I could find some way to give up 7 cents a day. BTW, Mack showed me how to figure the taxes on the car.
Well, if you had one trillion dollars on the day Christ was born and you started spending at the rate of one million dollars a day...today you would still have over 700 years to go before you spent all of it !
I heard this on the radio. Does anyone know how to check the math? My calculator exploded !
In addition to leap years, the first would have been 8 ad under the Julian calendar. I believe you will also need to subtract 10 days when the switch was made from Julian to the Gregorian calendar in the 1500s by order of the Pope.
Well, I'm off in the morning for my two hour drive to the Grand Marquis dealer. I've done as much research as I can do---two months worth. I finished negotiating this afternoon by internet. The price is set on the GM and he told me what he thought that he could give me for the trade. If all goes well, hopefully I won't be a baby seal for once in my life. Wish me luck. I appreciate all of the great advice from you guys during the last few weeks.
