basically, how many do a 'pilot check' before driving a car for the first time?
    i'm waiting

I do a sort of "pilot check" before driving. I try to visually check the tires (and use a tire gauge once or twice a month), I try to check lights as often as possible, Check oil and fluids every other fill up. If its a car I haven't driven before I take a few extra minutes and familiarize myself with all the controls and displays.

I do exceed the speed limit on the limited access highways by 7 mph - not enough to be pulled over

I know a lot of places where 7 over will get you nabbed. Heck I know a few off hand where 1 will do it (there is one town not to far outside the Chicago metro area where I am doing under the SL well before crossing the city limits and I stay there until I cross over it again).

Read again - 7 mph over on my speedometers is actually 5 mph over. :)

Read again I know places where 1 over will get you a ticket.

The speedo on my 4runner matches my GPS speed. When I had a Tacoma, it was 3mph slower than the GPS.

Pretty amazing since 1 MPH over in a 30MPH zone is within the margin of error for a speedometer. Speedometers are not 100% accurate; they can be from 1-5% off: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/car-driving-safety/safety-regulatory-devices/speed- ometer4.htm

Example: A car's speedo is under-reporting by 2% so while the driver thinks they're doing 30 they are actually doing 30.6. If the radar gun rounds to whole MPH that would show as 31.

    BTW, which 'burb is it?

For those interested in such things......polution free car of the future, pretty incredible.
    GM

My general rule of thumb is I will go up to 10% over the speed limit, hoping the law enforcement people are after bigger fish, errr faster fish than me.

If, I did get a ticket, I don't get too upset, there are hundreds of times I don't get a ticket, so that is fair enough.

If you are driving a different car, it is a good idea to adjust the mirrors, find out where major controls are, like windshield wipers, lights, etc.

    Those were interesting numbers. The most interesting was the cars where sales were up in this market;
Not surprisingly, Hyundai continues its winning ways with the largest increase in sales by volume at 45.91 percent. Newcomers to the I Know How To Sell Cars In A Down Market list include Nissan, up 19.94 percent, and Mercedes-Benz, up 19.11 percent. Subaru and Kia again perform flawlessly, posting gains of 23.95 and 18.27 percent, respectively.

Seems to be a combination of good pricing and/or new models that are attracting buyers.

I have sold and delivered, literally thousands of new and used cars and I have yet to have anyone check their tires.

Hey, if that makes you feel better, go for it!

I have to admit, I NEVER check my tire pressures. I do look at them once in awhile but that's it. On our Hondas, I rarely check the oil levels and when I do, they are always full.

I no longer speed or at least, I try not to. In my younger days (much younger) I once got nine tickets in one year. Three of those were in the same week. Two of the three were on the same day my the same motorcycle cop.

I'm not proud of any of this and I'm lucky I never put a dent on a cr.

Insurance co. never found out and I did get my license put on probation for a year.

    Lessons learned.

I check tire pressures on all my cars monthly. On the Speed Triple I check before every ride. I check the oil monthly as well. I usually don't speed except on the Interstate, and then no more than 10-15 over. That said, I usually double the advisory speeds on curves and ramps... :D :P

I go over the car before a long road trip, but usually just check tire pressures when I feel some pulling or when the idiot light comes on.

Otherwise I get my service dept to check it all out during an oil change.

Well first of all the law says you can't go over the SL, it says nothing about allowing for speedometer error.

Now for my example, its not a burb but a town in rural Northern Illinois. I can't remember the name but its on Route 20 between I-90 and I-90 (nope thats not a typo),

But since you mentioned burb you reminded me of Stone Park a very small burn in the near western burbs that is a well known speed trap. They are known for giving out tickets for being just a few over the limit.

Has anyone here put out newsletters? I would like to do something quarterly, but don't know where to start. I want it to be simple, bbut not corny. Something to keep my name in front of them. Cadillac has a company, but it seems to specialize in the whole dealer. I just want it to be from me personally. I do X-mas cards and Anniversary cards, but want to expand.

    I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
I did a newsletter once that was supposed ot be quarterly. However time has prevented me from following up on the first issue. Most of my customers loved it because it was more about me and less about the products.

Mine was a 6 page newsletter that I did on Microsoft Publisher. The program is fairly easy to use, and during my time I had Honda I printed about 400 copies and sent them out (at the dealer's postage expense but my printing costs - about $200 or less).

A coworker also had a newsletter going, but all it had was 2 pages of current rates and promotion, sort of like spam you get in the mailbox. Nothing personalized.

If you're going to do one I suggest you have some or all of the following in it:

-An interesting story about yourself (how you got into sales, most funniest sale story etc.)
-One review of a product you're selling
-A quick look at upcoming products
-A half a page about your dealership, including important contact numbers etc..
-Maybe a fun article or puzzle or something

Print and mail it instead of emailing it. It's too easy to click the delete button on an email, or worse, assign your email address to the junk folder.

    Good luck!

Just curious mcdawgg - limits have varied quite a bit from the time most limited access highways were designed. Started at ~70, then 55, now some 60, some 65. A delta of 15 MPH. So if the went back to 70 would you stay 5 under that?

OR if they were reduced to 50 would you go 10 over?

    Just curious.
  • mcdawggmcdawgg Member Posts: 1,722
Some states are currently 70, most 65 that I am in and around. If I am on a limited access highway, I will go 5 over when the speed limit is 55 or above. Why??

When I picked up my new car, I went 5 over on the highway, but I varied my speed frequently so to properly break-in the car, which is what the owner's manual says to do. Just trying to steer back on topic. ;)

i don't think anyone is 'praying for a manufacturer to screw up'.
what exactly happened is still to be determined.
the step by step back pedal from one issue to another does not inspire confidence that the real issue is being addressed.
i had someone at work stop by to tell me about the pedal issue with regards to the Prius. They have one and know my sister has one and wanted to make sure she knew about it. They were alerted to it by another Prius owner, so i guess that network is getting up to speed about this.
after some discussion of alternatives, we decided the 'jaws of life' would be the quickest way to snip off the bottom of the pedal. ;)

From what I read and hear, some people most certainly are.

Back to sales from the frontlines - I also request that the dealers do not put any advertising on - decals, stickers, whatever. What I will do is if the dealer is good to me, then I will tell people about them - good word-of-mouth advertising is better than plastering a sticker on, in my opinion.

Absolutely, but therein lies the rub. The driver in my example was not speeding according to the data available (speedometer). They wanted to obey the law and thought they were. It's only due to speedometer inaccuracy that they were speeding. Inaccuracy that is entirely legal, BTW.

The cops should really be working in the spirit of the law - maintaining safety on the road - and not the absolute letter of the law. Zero tolerance with no situational awareness is just plain bad.

BTW, Oakbrook police are on the zealous side as well.

I put out newsletters every 4-6 months for my entire career. I enjoyed doing it, but after a while it got very time consuming - especially when I was sending out close to 1000 every time. I used a single sheet of paper printed on both sides, then tri-folded & sealed with a small perforated sticker. The names and addresses were printed directly on them. The only bad thing about doing it this way was that they had a tendency to disappear in the mail due to the post office machines eating them.

I generally included random things & very little about the actual cars. I'd put in recipes, editorials, winter driving advice... stuff like that. On the back of the page I'd have a small area listing some of the better used car deals or lease specials at the time. You could also include a coupon for an additional $$ off the final price - just make sure that you check w/ management first & be sure that it specifies they must ask for YOU. I had so many customers come in and work with other salespeople & then throw that in at the last minute.... I did the work to get them back in the door & someone else got the commission. To avoid this, put your picture on it with your name, hours, phone and email contact information.

Do you have any idea how well the newsletter works?

Do you think a card and a calendar at Christmas time might help?

Pens are good because people keep them around. Another good one is a calendar, even a wallet calendar. People also like those little flashlights, and small box cutters.

Joe Girard, worlds greatest salesman, sent a birthday card at the right time. I am not sure if that is good or not. Some people might not want to be reminded about birthdays.

We get a newletter from our real estate guy. I usually find something of value in it, and it is a good way to keep the contact going.

If you pay for it there must be a tax expense advantage, so the real cost is less than it seems. I think if there was something useful attached people would appreciate it.

Time for a non sales story. Yesterday I got an e-mail from an out of state prospect with a offer to buy a Certified Range Rover for about $9000 less than my asking price. Although it was a ridiculous offer, I countered with a discount - leaving me a slim but acceptable profit. He came back moving up $5000 (still $3000 apart and a big loser) and then wanted me to included shipping ($650), and about $650 worth of accessories. I wrote back thanking him but were too far apart to counter again. I wished him luck and told him that if I was able to acquire a car below market value that I would let him know. He then blasted me saying he could buy the car for $10,000 below my asking price in a couple of months after the dealer's artificially propped up prices plummeted.
This is the mentality we deal with often.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Haha, funny. Some people have no clue about the market but pretend like thye do. Did he forget we do this for a living, and we heard every crappy excuse like that before?

my view is that some are working hard as appologists and are trying do deflect the responsibility from the manufacturer/designer.
regarding dealer decals or plate surrounds, i am ok with them because i want the tech working on the car to know i bought it at their dealership.

You deserve a medal if that is a fairly typical prospect.

It will be $20,000 below asking price if he waits 5 more years.

I like being serious and extra polite with those idiots. For example, say enthusiastically "That's a good idea Mr Smith, I am going to write your request down on my calendar for about March, and if the price drops $10,000 I'll be sure to give you a call". Then hang up and LYAO.

I'll get an inquiry on a used car that we have advertised on the internet.

" What is your best price?"

The thing is, even if we had made a 5000.00 pricing mistake, I would get the same question.

I'll email them back..." We have it advertised for 24,000. It's a great buy at that price but if, after you see it in person you feel it's worth less than that, I'll be happy to present any offer on your behalf"..

" Well, I've seen similar cars advertised for 19,000>"

" If they are only 19,000, there must be a reason. If the car is as nice as ours, you should buy it." Etc.....
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
It actually is a not so rare out of state internet RFQ. They all think we are marking our cars up $10,000. Then they want the car well below your cost because they assume we are desperate to do a deal.
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
Speaking of internet quotes, do you folks in the biz give a better quote to a guy that is from out of state for example, than from a RFQ from someone local. My experience doing an internet quote from the local dealers is all I get is "Come on down and we'll talk about it". Obviously if I was from out of state, I couldn't just "come ond down" and would prefer to agree on a price first, then it would just be a matter of a final test drive and final look over. If the vehicle was exactly as described in the ad, it would be a done deal.
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
I really do not care if the RFQ is local or out of state. If the customer wants an "best" price it will be the same except the out of state customer will pay for shipping if required. I will say that you will usually get a better price if you are in the dealership as they know you will do the deal. Also, both sides can better present their needs and positions. There is not a substitute for real conversation.

The lease on my Dad's '07 X5 3.0si is coming to an end on February 21, 2010 (30 months/50K miles). While he likes his '07 X5, he doesn't LOVE it the way he loved his first '04 X5. The 2010 X5 is basically the same truck he leased almost 2 & a half years ago. The BMW advanced diesel model costs a lot more & doesn't seem to be big enough for my Dad's 2 year old great danes (Mollie & Maddie).

So he's decided to take a plunge. His next truck will be his first American car since the 1998 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer whose lease ended in 2001. It will join his 1966 Corvette Stingray Convertible (427/390 4spd). His next truck will be a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ. Red Jewel Tintcoat/Ebony Leather.

    Details to follow.

I used to do a monthly newsletter when I was president of a 2,000 member union group. Each month I featured a happy "customer" along with his/her picture. Naturally, you would get their permission to publish the article and picture. Some people love to see themselves in print. ;)

If you want to give away an item, do emery boards (nail files). My wife loves it when she can find those. I use them myself. Also, they tend to stay around the house for some time.

I have a question. I have been tempted to buy from another dealer because the bmw dealer here is the only one in a 30 mile radius. The dealership itself is pretty good, I wasn't that happy about the salesman. I wouldn't give him a bad report, because he doesn't do anything really bad or wrong.....he's just slow on the computer and I feel we aren't working together that well.

How will the warranty stuff work? Will they give me the same treatment as the people who actually bought a car from the local dealer. When I buy from the local dealer they have all the information on hand. Maybe buying outside the area would be better, the local guys would have to try harder to win you back.

This could be very interesting...I have heard of people changing to buy foreign cars, but I have never heard of anyone returning to American cars.

Sounds like a nice vehicle, but it will be interesting to see if it all works out. I have been surprised at people who were die hard buyers of American cars, but when they bought their first foreign model car, they said they wouldn't go back. I know the quality is about even, and they have made great improvements.....but if you buy a foreign car and you like it better, how do you go back?

Well, cars change. ANd all it should really take is an open mind, and actually checking them out. If anything, not even looking is probably what keeps a lot of people from switching (that, and the related preconceived notions).

10-15 years ago, you had the Accord and Camry (just to use mid size family sedans example) at the peak of their "goodnees". Over engineered and over built, very high quality. The domestic counter was what, a tempo/contour, Malibu, Stratus? Not exactly a fair fight there.

Today, you have the Fusion (a very well regarded car), new malibu, and (oops, better stay away from Chrysler here...). Vastly better cars, and in most ways, as good as or better than the CamCord, which seem to have lost their way (still nice, but not the same quality, engineering overkill, etc. Not to mention styling).

Maybe the imports having declined that much, but the domestics sure the heck have caught up!

How will the warranty stuff work?

Buying at one dealer and servicing at another will not effect the warranty at all. The only thing it might change would be the service loaner policy.
  • hackattack5hackattack5 Member Posts: 315
Why do people try to beat the salesman down on price? Why are we not trusting of the car salesman and not believe they are giving the best possible price? Below is a question posted on this site. (yep thats $18,400 for an 03 Accord with 96,000 miles ;) )

I'm so messed up. Just bought an 03 Honda Accord from Honda dealer with 30% interest. How to get my interest lower?
I'm been in many dealers in the last couple of months to get loan and none of them approved me until last Tuesday. I went to Honda dealership and they approved me with 30% interest.
The salesman said that I'm a first time buyer so it's kind of of hard to get a loan. He said that I have to build my credit first and after 6 months I can trade-in and I'm gonna be able to buy any kind a car and I think he got me.
So finally I take it with $2200 down and short term only 36 month I end up paying $450 a month. When I go to financial manager he didn't offer me that much, just basics like gap insurance and road assistance something like that.

So I just take the gap insurance but he say that he's trying to get me better interest that might lower my payment.

When I get home I just realized that buying $10,000 with $450 a month is way too much so I'm thinking that since it's a good car I might gonna keep it.

Do you know how to get my interest lower? Is that refinance or trade-in the car after 6 months?

30%?? I've never heard of such a rate.

Yes there are but I'm not sure what the limits are.

Even so, who would agree to such a rate unless their credit was horrible and they were up against the wall?
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
Limits vary from state to state. In Colorado, 21% is max. Haven't heard from Joel lately, but if you are lurking what is the max Tennessee rate?
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
Unless the dealer is doing his own financing no sub-prime bank is going to loan more than 90% or less of LTV with damaged or no credit - and that was before the crash.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
In Canada 29.9% is the highest that can be done on a car loan.

  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
The situation above has nothing to do about salesperson being trusting or not. It has everything to do with the buyer, their credit, and how badly they think they want or need a car loan.

First of all if the person went from lot to lot and nobody would finance them, that is a sign that their credit may not be the best. Lots don't just turn people away for fun. If there's even a small chance that an "up" wants to buy, we'll do everything we can do get a deal done. So if someone got turned away everywhere, then it's a sign that probably they're not financeable. We get customers like that too that would get turned down everywhere but they are desperate for a car. And when their only option is a loan at 29.9% they jump on it. We don't pull such a rate randomly out of the air. The bank sets that rate and goes through strict approval process and takes a risk on a person that defaulted on everything before. Whenever I have a customer that asks why the rate is what it is I always say: "Your rate is a reflection fo your credit" It's pure and simple.

Second of all if it took that customer a few hours to figure out that 30% interest and $450 a month payments are too high, they shouldn't be out by themselves shopping for anything at all. Either you agree because the payment, price, and rate suits you or you say no because it doesn't suit you. You move on shopping elsewhere or planning your life for now without a car.

On a side note I had a similiar customer who after purchasing a car (she had very poor credit) emailed us a few days later saying she can't afford the payments and that we pressured her. Huh? I presented the payments to you. You wanted the car asap. You said yes. You signed 20 freaking documents over the course of an hour stating what the payment and rate was going to be, and suddenly at home 3 days later you realize it's too much?

I'm sorry but I don't get folks who don't look after their financial matters. Yes things happen, and some people have bad credit due to unforseen circumstances, but the majority of folks I've seen are just poor with financial planning and spending priorities. Nor do I have sympathy for someone NOT in the business who'll read a post like that and then jump on the sales folks not understanding how the business works, how financing and credit scores work, or whether all the facts were presented in the post.

And yes, I had lousy credit at one point in my life and had a high interest car loan. I Iearned from it, and carried on with life. When things got tough I didn't whine that someone pressured me into buying something or that I can't afford this or that. I went to a dealer myself, I picked a car, I agreed to the payments, and I dealt with it. Yes I overpaid, but that's the price I paid for being irresponsible. But ultimately I figured out a way to make it work.

I started typing a similar post but I decided to pull my punch.

It's hard to feel sorry for people who have brought this on themselves and they don't learn. They STILL have to have the top of the line model. They "need leather and a sunroof" etc.

Of course, it's the salesperson's fault for their dismal credit and high rate of interest.
