What's the deal with the M5? Still sitting on the lot? Are you waiting to make your move?
It's still on the lot(and wearing the handwritten "AS IS DUE TO YEAR AND PERFORMANCE CAR" sticker); they've now had it for 30 days. The dealer has listed the thing on AutoTrader, Cars.com, and the local daily newspaper. It also showed up on a 5 day eBay auction, where bidding stopped at $13,000- which didn't meet the reserve. I don't think it's going anywhere for some time. They've dropped the price from $17,950 to $15,950. I might drive over there sometime this weekend and offer them $15,000 OTD.

GP....first and foremost, good to see you back here. And, congrats on your new position.
Regarding my colleague's deal on the G, he's a difficult guy to work with in my field. I get along with him just fine. Not many people feel the same way about him as I do. But, I understand what I'm getting into when we have to do any sort of work together. Like he does with his car deals, in work he focuses only on one thing in a project, when the scope of it has many more parameters than just what it is he's focused on. If you steer him towards working on that one thing he latches onto in any project, he'll attack it with a vengeance. Broaden his scope on a project, and he'll frustrate himself, and everyone around him.
I don't know if he gave up when it came to the F&I portion. But, in his mind, he already had accomplished what he set out to accomplish at the negotiation table. Before he even entered the F&I office, he felt he was done. So, it wasn't a big surprise to me when he told me how the back end of the deal played out.
When I wrote that post last week we had four new SAABs left and now we have one.
The newbie sold the first one last week. Another guy sold one Monday and I sold one Tuesday on my day off over the phone. We have one automatic 9-3 2.0T left and there are four different people looking at it today. I don't expect it to make it through the end of the day.
We are about the oldest SAAB dealer in the country and the owners have had SAABs since they first started driving 40 plus years ago so they are pretty upset by the whole situation. Hopefully something will come together but GM seems hell bent on letting SAAB die. They would rather it cost them hundreds of millions of dollars in shut down costs then give the Chinese or Russians the technology that SAAB developed for GM over the past couple decades.
I like it like that and I figured there had to be insulation on the bottom of the car and I’m sure there is but when I looked under the car while it was in my driveway I saw panels on a large portion of the under carriage.
2010 Avalon Limited has that insulation/sound dampener also. Sales guy pointed it out and had me feel it under the fender lip. It was kind of like felt. I asked if it was affected by the elements (rain snow) and he said it effectively dampened noise in all weather conditions. Sorry, jmonroe, I didn't take it to the next step and slide under. So, where it starts/stops won't be known until the first oil change. My indie guy lets me be anywhere I want while he does maintenance. Even answers questions while he works. He's that good! :shades:
A few years ago, we had one of our sales guys switch over to service. He bacame a Service Advisor.
He just loved it when a customer would try to negioate the price of a repair.
He was always nice about it, but he would make sure they knew that it didn't matter if they happened to work for Microsoft or Amazon and that the price was the price...period!
After spending nearly 20 years in the tool business, I've seen it all and trust me, customers are better off not knowing what happens sometimes.
Yes, he should have used the right tool but using those slip joint pliers gently wouldn't have hurt a thing.
I was once in a Mercedes Dealer shop and a customer had brought in a brand new Mercedes because the driver's door wasn't shutting properly.
The burly technician asked the Service Advisor..." Is the customer eyeballing me?"
When he heard the answer was no, he grabbed the door top and bottom and wrenched it into the proper alignment. He did it once, checked his work, and gave it one more tug and it was perfect!
Now, I'm sure, proper technique would have involved removing the door and shimming it or something but the fix worked and it was I'm sure, permanent.
After spending nearly 20 years in the tool business, I've seen it all and trust me, customers are better off not knowing what happens sometimes.
Which is why I only patronize shops that employ techs who are professional and take pride in their work. I have two dealers, two indie shops, and one tire store that perform quality work, and they are the only places that I take my vehicles.
Yes, he should have used the right tool but using those slip joint pliers gently wouldn't have hurt a thing.
I disagree; that so-called tech is obviously a hack who takes shortcuts by grabbing the nearest tool he can reach. I'll bet he'd use vise-grips to remove/install a drain plug if he didn't have the correct socket down in the lube pit- or use an allen wrench on a Torx fastener.

I want to thank all of you guys for your quick response regarding the FJ. My research indicates that the blind spot is a major issue. At my age and with my vision problems, I don't need that vehicle. My convertible, as all convertibles do, has that problem to some degree. I don't need more of that in another car. In fact, I nearly backed into a truck on Christmas Eve when I was coming out of a parking space at the grocery store. Fortunately, the cart boy shouted to me just in time. Those rear convertible top panels can really block your vision.
To irguy and graphicguy: I'll look at the 4Runner as a possible. As you say, it would be a more "civilized" option. I have a friend in Savannah who loves his 4Runner.
To Isell: The Honda CRV and the Pilot are still at the top of our list. You never did share your preference with me between the two. As a Honda salesman, I guess that question puts you on the spot a bit. I can understand.
To Driver: Thanks for the FJ link. I had gone there as well.
Interesting that you had a similiar experience with Oxmoor. I've been in the retail auto industry for 20+ years. After dealing with these clowns I felt slimy. I didn't have a choice though as I was stuck in Louisville on a Sunday night when I blew out the two passenger side tires on my Mazda 6s. I had to spend the night and then deal with the service department at Oxmoor on Monday AM. No other tire stores were open and I wanted to replace my Michelins with exact replacements. BTW, the Michelins on a 2006 Mazda 6s are not a common size that can be found anywhere so I had limited choices. The good part was that my Mazda warranty paid for the tow, but I had to make a decision sunday night with no knowledge of tire retailers in the area so I went to Oxmoor. I got a competitive price on the tires compared to other tire retailers (within a couple of bucks of each other I checked on Monday AM using the hotel internet) but they tried to add a bunch of addl services that I knew I didn't need. they tried to charge me a balance fee for all 4 tires ($60) when the price I was quoted for the new tires included mounting, balancing and installation.
Isell, If you went to a doc for wound repair and suture--- and instead of suturing with a scissors/forceps he just ties the suturing thread with his hand like tying one`s shoe laces- and then tells his nurse/receptionist "The technique is improper but the fix worked and I am sure ,it will be permanent". :P
What would your reaction be if you found about it later ? And the doc charges you full fee for the procedure which takes about 45 min but he ties it up in just 5 min? Dont you feel that he took unfair advantage of you when infact you trusted him totally? :shades:
Oxmoor washed my MPV one time when I had my oil changed, hadn't asked them to though. I suppose they were trying to show how customer oriented they were. It looked to be all of a 2 minute hand wash with the rinse being a bucket of puddle water. Had to rewash the car when I got home.
I let them do my $19 oil changes and discounted coolant flushes... which are generally hard to screw up.
Interesting that you had a similar experience with Oxmoor.
When I first looked at the MS3 Oxmoor wanted several thousand over MSRP, wouldn't allow a test drive without a signed buyers order, and wouldn't discuss a dealer trade. Needless to say, I bought my MS3 from Kings. Several months later I stopped by Oxmoor's parts desk to buy a set of front pads; they wanted $57 over MSRP and $100 over the internet price offered by a couple of online Mazda dealers. Good luck finding anyone on the Mazda boards who has anything good to say about Oxmoor...

I'm glad that you have one of those so that I can ask you a question. I bought a new Grand Cherokee in 1996---emerald green with a red stripe. It was a beautiful vehicle. We kept it for one year and traded it for a Tahoe. It rode like a buck board and the handling was terrible. Have they improved in those two areas? Also, how is the stability control? We had a freak incident with that car. On the way to town one day, the rear window literally blew (imploded) into the car. I nearly had a wreck from the shock. We never knew what caused it to happen. Naturally, the dealer replaced it at no cost. I'm not opposed to putting it on our list if there have been positive improvements. In fact, my trusty Chrysler dealer would probably give me a decent deal on one of those.
If you drive tonight, be careful. It's the other guy that worries me. Have a great New Year! May the salesmen make plenty of money in 2010, and may the customers get the cars of their dreams---at very good deals.
we are staying home tonight. egghead is having a half a dozen friends here for a sleepover. since she didn't go for the 'I'll get you a new car if you go to UCONN' spiel, i guess i won't be buying a new one for a while.

Ours is solid and very stable. We bought it to go skiing and (light) off roading. Never had any problems in the snow (with snow tires). A lot of hard core Jeep enthusiasts have complained that they've dumbed down the GC.
In reality, they made it better for every day driving. People forget this is not a hard core, rock climbing vehicle. That's the Wrangler. Starting with the 2008 year model, they used better materials for the interior. The 2011 is supposed to be even better.
Everybody agreed about the FJ's poor visibility. No such problem with the GC. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
But I have read where the new V6 in the 4Runner will outperform the old V8 and get better mileage.
One of the big complains I read (in the 4Runner forum here at Edmudns) was that towing capability won't be as good. I don't tow, so I don't mind that part. However, when going skiing, we climb 8000 feet in 70 miles. I'm not sure a V6 would handle those inclines as well as a V8. But if it does, that's great.
I live in Denver and my wife's 08 Highlander V6 will do the climb without a problem. Her towing capacity is less than my V8 4Runner but more than enough for most applications.
We were just setting up the car rental car for Florida later this month. I just don't know how they come up with their classifications. A Fusion is listed as an intermediate car and is $800 for one month, a Dodge Charger is listed as a standard car" and is $870 for the month.
I had the Fusion last year so I am curious about the Charger, so I'll take that one. Usually you get something completely different anyway.
I assumed the two cars cost about the same, and I thought the Charger would actually cost less, since it isn't nearly as popular as the Fusion. It seems strange that it would cost more to rent?????
driver.....around $30/day for either car seems like a good rental deal. Given a choice between the two? I've never been a big Dodge fan. Plus, I think the Charger hasn't been updated in any significant way in quite some time.
The Fusion, on the other hand, is a relatively new update. I might be very tempted to rent that instead.
While I haven't done so too much recently, I used to rent cars for work on a weekly basis. It really gave me a good "feel" for the cars that were out in the market. Granted, most of the rentals were base models, every once in a while Hertz would slip me an upgrade, being I was a good customer. They used to call cars like the Crown Vic a "premium car", and the Volvos, Jags, Caddys, etc their uber luxury rentals. They called Malibus full size cars, too, with Mustang V6s as their "performance upgrade". Really never could figure out how they'd designate any of their cars that way.
It's been a few years ago, but I remember asking one of the rental clerks, after upgrading me to a Focus, "well, if that's an upgrade, what's your standard rental?"
That was reserved for the likes of a Chevy Aveo. Go figure?
Happy New Year everyone. The past year....I'll even go as far as to say the last decade is one that doesn't bear repeating.
"...since it isn't nearly as popular as the Fusion."
The Dodge Charger is very popular here in the South. The closer that you get to Florida, the more popular it is. Race fans love the Charger, especially that orange colored one.
I think that you should rent a Grand Marquis and enjoy finding out what I have known for years. BTW, $800 for a month's rental is under $27 per day. That's not bad at all.
..around $30/day for either car seems like a good rental deal.
Oh, I agree, Florida is the best place to rent a car. The competition is fierce, and there afre so many people renting, you really get good rates. In fact, it doesn't make too much sense to drive, when you can fly and rent.
I had a Fusion last year so I know what it is all about. Good value and well worth the money....although a little boring. That's why I would like to try the Charger this time. your standard rental?"
That was reserved for the likes of a Chevy Aveo.
I don't want to be driving an Aveo with some of those drivers in Florida. I'd like to have some metal around me...the more the better. The difference in cost between a Charger and a Hyundai Accent is about $200. Well worth $7 a day to get the bigger car...I think!
BTW, $800 for a month's rental is under $27 per day. That's not bad at all.
I agree, but I just looked it up again to see what the Calibre Special was....and it was $451 for 4 weeks...which is really good.
But, then an interesting thing happened...because I was doing it quickly I put in we would pick up the car at 2:30 pm and return it 4 weeks later at 2:30 PM...exactly 4 weeks (before I said returning at 5:30 PM)....now the new rate is the Charger comes out to $660 for the month or about $20 a day....and the Fusion is a special of the month at $487 for the month.
Here is the lesson....really check out the rates and make sure you are doing one month or one week....and really check out the specials.
With all taxes and surcharges the Charger would have been almost $1100, and the Fusion comes to $650...almost half.
The only problem is I wanted to try the Charger, but for a $400 savings, I'll go with a Fusion again!

I don't want to be driving an Aveo with some of those drivers in Florida. I'd like to have some metal around me...the more the better.
The difference in cost between a Charger and a Hyundai Accent is about $200. Well worth $7 a day to get the bigger car...I think!

Rent a GM in Tampa for One Month
I think I'll stick with the Fusion for $650.
You almost could have bought a GM for that amount!
