the tundra is just a midsize junk truck
  • redfox1redfox1 Member Posts: 42
Interesting comment: the Tundra is a midsize junk truck. At least you have the honor to be alone in your stupid opinion. The J.D. Power Initial Study of 2000 year autos rates the Tundra as the top full size truck. Consumer Reports also gave the Tundra that rating. In the Consumer Reports "Bad To The Bone" listing they gave Chrysler 19 Models tested at or below average and 3 models above average. Toyota had 1 model rated at or below average and 10 models rated above average. You should do a little reading before you sound off. Wall Street Journal dated 4 & 5 May, 2000. Nice articles.

Dodge20 is Ford30. Please don't respond to this kid-it only encourage more fradulent crap.

    markcord,

I'm responding to you about the calibration test. Yes, it did work. I heard about this defense from a Philly lawyer(hence their reputation) and gave it a shot in Delaware. I requested it and the cop couldn't provide the necessary info to prove that his machine was "accurate".
Despite my good fortune, I understand now that the police have developed a good response to this argument. I believe these machines are tested and certified every year and thus validates the speed results and upholds it in court.

Hey man, good for you. Figures that they'd smarten up. Guess the best angle still is to have a friend that can "fix" such problems!
  • swobigswobig Member Posts: 634
off of this site and other like it is to be careful as to what the magazines recommend. I believe they all make decent vehicles and you can have one that will only go 50,000 miles and one that goes 500,000 miles (Toyota included!). These magazines tend to spew out garbage many times though. There seems to be a pattern, that they choose whatever is newest and call it the best. Do your homework, research it yourself, and then select what's best from there...

    Just bought a Tundra...
and I love it!! (All except those crappy back seats).

I've been looking at Silverado's, Tundra's and F150's. All very nice vehicles. I was pleased that the competition is producing nice trucks.

Same old story, loved the Silverado's cabin room and little niceties, like integrated seats, compass on rear view mirror etc. Nice ride and acceleration.

Didn't like that the fact that the battery went dead, the electric seat was broken. We had to test drive in a different truck. I didn't care for the dash tolerances. One truck, the dash was put together, snug as a bug, the next looked like it was going to come apart.

The F150 was all round nice too. Wide cabin. Nice acceleration except it sounded like it was having a hernia. I liked the variety of colors and platforms alot.

The tundra had the quietest cab and engine. Nice acceleration. Very nice ride.
Didn't (HATED) the back seats. The cab size is smaller, but fine for me. I'm 5'4''. Don't like the blower where it is on the passenger side. Love everything else. But the price. Even though I got mine 200 over invoice. Still hate the price of new cars PERIOD.
I perfer it also for the SMALLER size. I'm not married and have no kids. I go camping and hiking here in AZ. Got dogs. This is my first truck and it has 4 wheel drive, TRD, CQ, tow, blah, blah. Everything but leather (just about) which is the way I like it.
Is the truck more reliable? We'll wait and see. But if I had to bet, I bet thumbs up. All my friends (truck and nontruck fans) are quite impressed with it. So are my girlfriend and I.
500 miles, and breaking her in.

Get out and spend time with loved ones, too,

    1.) Accord
    2.) F-Series
    3.) Silverado/Sierra

    32.) Tundra

Tundra ranked with the other small trucks, behind Dakota and Tacoma, just ahead of Frontier, S10, Sonoma, Ranger.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
jd power also rated the Dakota best compact truck for 2000 but yet cr rates them junk, thats how much you can read into those articles and ratings. The tundra is a midsize truck and always will be, even on there own web site they state there acceleration test is against the smallest V8's of the big 3 and there's a 1000 lbs in the beds of the big 3.Check it out for yourself.
  • sampson7sampson7 Member Posts: 25
Dakota didnt win y2k jd powers, the winners are

    Compact Pickup Truck Segment
    1. Mazda B-Series
    2. GMC Sonoma
    3. Chevrolet S10 Pickup

    Full-Size Pickup Truck Segment
    1. Toyota Tundra
    2. Ford F-150 Light Duty
    3. Ford F-250 Super Duty

J D powers simply sends a questionnaire to new owners and asks them how they like the initial quality, how many repairs they have had, etc. If there is any bias, it is from the owners, not JD powers. It's probably a pretty good indicator of initial quality. Not too suprising that Toyo won. What's more suprising is that in the compacts GM did well.

    Quadrunner:
Some of the other "hot vehicles" lower than the tundra on the bottom of KBBs list are BMW's 5 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes E-Class. What's your point?
  • trucksrmetrucksrme Member Posts: 381
So a bunch of yuppie magazine folk be prasin that tundra, that aint workin em! Them that work em prefer a real truck, not some pint-sized yuppie truck as them limited ones. If ya goin work it, get ya the big3 one, if ya be a yuppie reachin for the fad, then that tundra be the one for ya. Good luck on this one now!
  • swobigswobig Member Posts: 634
the point is the magazine is stupid!!!
  • bamatundrabamatundra Member Posts: 1,583
    The truth hurts:
    : barlitz (bamatundra) Mon 08 May '00 (07:16 PM)

J.D. Powers and Associates 2000 Initial Quality
    Study (SM) Awards Announced:

    Full-Size Pickup Truck Segment
    1. Toyota Tundra
    2. Ford F-150 Light Duty
    3. Ford F-250 Super Duty

Not bad for a first year vehicle.

On the other hand - Chevy Silverado scored -90% in
Consumer Reports predicted reliability for 2000
full size pickups. It was so bad, it was off their
chart. The only other vehicle to rate this bad
    was the GMC Sierra.

Its a good thing that Chevy parts are so cheap
because the poor owners will need them - lots of
them. Is Chevy labor cheaper too?
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
    Bamatundra,
Nobody gives a flip about JD Powers or Consumer Reports. If they did, we'd all be prostrate before the emperor, as you are. What I care about, Toyota does not make. A full size truck.
Let's leave it at that, shall we?

in my Silverado that these Tundra owners have. It's like there truck are indistructable...

From a continuation of Tundra vs. Big 3, I do not even own a Tundra!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...and with enough looking through the "comic books"....we can find one that says it is number one...

    Chevy
    Ford
    Dodge

That's all there is to know about trucks..

    (mostly just the first 2)

Toiletta still has a long way to go to have a real full size truck....for now it's just the midsize tundra...

Wake up....be an American..BUY American....if not?...then get the frick outa my country.

  • arkie6arkie6 Member Posts: 198
So Tim, do you consider buying a Chevy or Dodge made in Mexico or a Ford made in Canada to be buying American? Just curious?

    Alan
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...Mine is from Pontiac,Michigan. So it falls under my rules..

As for Mexico and Canada....Ford and GM are american Companys...and the majority of the profit goes back to America...

Now Toiletta,Mazda,Honda,etc....they can have plants here and employ Americans and some people think it's OK....truth is the real profit goes Bye bye!

Wake up and smell America....or leave.

You must lead a very complicated life trying to avoid non-american products. Have you replaced all the foreign-made parts of your truck with american? Do you avoid foreign gasoline? You must really have a hard time buying clothes, paper products, food, fabrics, and electronics.

Maybe you should check your household over and make sure that nothing foreign is present. I'd hate to see you kick yourself out of your own country.

My goodness this is a feisty group!

Since I had occasion to do some service training for Toyota on the Tundra last fall, I thought I'd just stop in here to see what goes on... And I must say that I'm a bit shocked!

First, I'll suggest that Toyota has a very nice vehicle in the Tundra. For some buyers, it's just what the doctor ordered!

For others, a full-size GM, Ford or Dodge truck may be required for their work/towing capacity.

As for myself, I just took delivery of a Dakota Quad Cab with 5.9L engine... Simply because I wanted to step DOWN from a full-size (Ram) to a compact, but needed guts enough to haul a heavy load through the mountains. Like it or not, the QC was the only game in town for my purposes.

The point is, WHO CARES what is manfuctured by whom and where!? ALL the manufacturers produce good products. And ALL have their strengths and weaknesses.

The point is that we're all buying and owning trucks that serve our individual needs.

Nuff said... Good luck to all!
  • sampson7sampson7 Member Posts: 25
I never said I didn't like your opinions, I just question the philosophy of "buy american or leave the country". The U.S. would be pretty empty.

America, love it or leave it.

Finally someone who thinks like me and not just because I'm a proud IBEW union worker.I agree totally in purchasing american made products it keeps our fellow americans working and keeps this country strong.Every month our trade defecit goes up with Japan because they will not reach a fair trade agreement and we as americans suffer although it doesn't show with our economy booming right now but some day it may haunt us.Also just because toyota builds cars in the US that means crap because all profits go back to Japan and the auto workers over here in the US make about 1/3 less than the average uaw worker. If Japan would agree on importing the same amount in dollar figures that they import to us on a yearly or monthly basis then I would consider a foreign purchase.Until then sayanara Toyota.

are you a [non-permissible content removed]? sounds like you're the one who's
bored. i mean really, who spends time looking
around their house to see what's made in america
    and what's not.

Trucksrme, your last statment tells me that we
have something in common. at least you finally
    made sense about something.

Maybe, but Front Porch Philosopher is pretty tolerant. Go to the Yahoo message boards, express an opinion like "Fly Old Glory proudly," gets yanked off in seconds. Meanwhile, you can curse, swear, insult, and they let that go.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
so what WAS the problem Meredith??

    - Tim
  • sampson7sampson7 Member Posts: 25
No, I'm not a [non-permissible content removed]. What the heck does that have to do with anything?

    I'm not bored.

And I don't look around my house to see what's american made. That is my point. Who really pays that much attention to where their toaster was made? They just buy one that suits their needs, has a good reputation for quality, and seems like a good deal.

That's why I don't understand the argument of buy american or leave the country.

For those of you who are so patriotic, don't ever complain about politics, gun laws, environmental regulation, etc. It's the U.S. love it or leave it. Right?

Let's face facts, it has nothing to do with patriotism. It's all about protecting your union job.
  • sampson7sampson7 Member Posts: 25
If the Tundra is over-priced, inadequate, and isn't full-size competition, why are all you ford/chevy/dodge loyalists so huffy? Why even post?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    Someone is cranky today...
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I only said "America, love it or leave it" because you said "The US would be empty."

Now while I really don't have a problem with imports or Toyotas, (guess I'm only 95% with Tim on this afterall) if ANYONE would give up this great country (even with its flaws) because you couldn't buy imports here, I will personally buy the WHINERS a one way plane ticket to the marxist country of their choice.

(I could care less about the unions. I do care for the US citizens, and feel they should love this great country, or leave it.)
  • rdve80rdve80 Member Posts: 139
The local Sunday paper had an article about 2001 cars and trucks and interviews with manufacturers reps. I don't remember the Toyota rep., but there was no mention of pickups at all, let alone expanding the Tundra line to cover the total full-size market. Toyota's focus is SUV's with "models ranging from $16k to $60k". Must be more profit and fewer models/options to manage. Guess there won't be a BIG4 in full-size trucks for awhile.

Wasn't going to comment in this section because it is so heated and controversial. Just been reading and enjoying. But I have to say that I agree with Quadrunner500 on his last post.

I am not anti-import, but I do think that often times people of the US take their freedoms for granted and to an extent, contribute to the problems that they complain about.

I believe the same thing about foreign language. Why is it now that in my native country I have to learn a foreign language in order to converse with people? I would expect that if I traveled outside my country, not in my own land. However, foreigners come to our country, the US, and they are not expected to learn our native language, English.

Makes no sense to me. Again, I am not a bigot or racist. I just think if you come to our country, speak our language and don't complain about how things are, else go back to where you came from.
  • markcordmarkcord Member Posts: 113
What you just posted is not bigotry - it's common sense (something we need a heck of a lot more of).

Word be gettin out quicker on them limited ones now. Folks be seein thru that factory smoke. Them ones aint the "full size" ones, and they aint American. They be forein trucks assembled in US by non-UAW folk, who just be wishin they had a contract. Fact is the fact, and no yuppie logic be changin these facts. Good luck on this one now!

Quad 500 is right this is a great Country and we should all be proud to be here I know I am,I know its impossible to completely buy all american and no one excepts you to.But if we all did our best to purchase as close to all american it only helps all of us.I'm not saying this because I'm union but because I believe in supporting my friends and neighbors.A truck or a car is a major purchase and thats why a lot of people harp on Toyota or whatever foreign make.To be honest how much more reliable can any of them be over american made the US has made great strides in bouncing back from years ago and they are only getting better,no one builds a vehicle that lasts forever and who would want that anyway most people 3 to 5 years and they get a new one with the technology and constant changes.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
as I said before the delete.....a Vehicle is the most Important American Made purchase you can make...period.

So if you buy an import....it shows your lack of love for this great place...

    - Tim
  • RoclesRocles Member Posts: 982
Hold up....the most important US-made good one can buy is a beer. What is wrong with you guys? ;)
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
...A vehicle is way more expensive than all the beer you could drink while you had the vehicle...uh..hold on..lemme get the calculator out here....

.....based on my price of my truck..and my price of my beer...and keeping the truck for 2 years..I'd have to buy 10.89 cases a week!
    ...that's OK..right?

    LOL

    - Tim
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
is what happens to our beer cans right? is'nt
that the material they use for foriegn vehicles?
if so then the more beer we drink the more
toyota's that get built. sort of a catch 22,
unless we buy beer in the bottle. that would be
    cool, a glass tundra.
  • swobigswobig Member Posts: 634
guess you need a 3/4 ton to carry all that beer! LOL
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    ....I mean come on...10 cases a week...and I'd have a huge beer gut!

    DOHH!
