Lease or Buy?
Man do I need help! Got a line on a Fusion Energi Titanium with moonroof. Selling price of $30,000. Zip is 60462. Should I buy or lease? Purchase is $412 / month for 72 months (excluding tax) but includes a $4,007 tax credit that I can use to pay 2018 taxes in 2019, big plus! The lease is $349 for 36 (10,500) and the buy-out and the residual is about 27% (of purchase price?) or $8,000.
Total cost to buy would be $25,657. Total cost to lease then buy would be $20,564. But, it would be nice to get the tax credit up front so time value of some of the money would be in play here. However, the flexibility to get out of a lease would be nice. Who knows where ev's will be in 3 years.

Opinions?

How long do you plan to keep the car?

If over three years, buy. If not, lease.

Residual is applied against the MSRP, not the purchase price, so the total lease cost will be higher than your calculations.

Is the lease cash a taxed incentive? If so, that means I am not getting the whole lease cash amt in full back, correct?

I have been in touch with almost a dozen dealers on the 2019 Energi Titanium. I sent them the Edmunds TMV of $32,174 as my offer on a 36/13.5 lease but every one of them countered at some number slightly over invoice ($33,577) and not a one countered below invoice. Edmunds TMV is also almost always above invoice for most cars. So what gives this time? Why is Edmunds TMV almost $1500 below invoice and below the price I seem able to get from any dealer? Are they all hiding some sort of huge holdback? Isn't Edmunds TMV based on statistical research of actual transactions exclusive of manufacturer rebates?

TMV is a purchase number. It's possible that it includes dealer incentives that aren't available with the lease program.

If that's not it, I have other information
