    Question about general dealer shenanigans and how much I should care...
    I'm working on a deal for a Soul EX and supposed to go in tomorrow to sign.

    In the emails back and forth we had been using a MF of 0.00184. My numbers never quite matched theirs -- off by a couple dollars here and there. When I run the latest numbers through an online calculator, I get around $215 pre tax, and $237 with tax of 10.25%.

    The manager is telling me it's $217 and $240 saying "in 35 years of selling cars, I've never seen the numbers match exactly".

    Well, if I change the MF to 0.00190 I get their numbers. They're obviously trying to squeeze a couple more dollars out of the deal and profit off the percentages and make up for an "error" that came to light when we were going over the final number. They said "the MSRP listed for the car was off by $50, but we'll honor the cap cost you worked out". So, they're making up that $50 mistake by slightly raising the MF.

    My instinct is to stick to the original numbers and insist that the $50 MSRP mistake was theirs, not mine.

    Thoughts? Am I just being petty?

    ^ You can disregard my previous post. :-D I'm pretty sure they did futz with the MF, but when I asked for clarification they showed me a screenshot from the lease computer showing a MF of 0.00184 AND a lower monthly rate than they had quoted. They said "we rounded up".
    Once I complete the deal, I'll report back.

    Seems doubtful they would markup the money factor by that small of an amount. But, something probably changed, or they had a wrong number somewhere.

    I'd rather structure it with just $820 due at signing, and $260/mo.

    Seems very reasonable.

    Drive off = rebate + cash from you

    Purchase option LEV = extra fee you'll pay added to the residual, if you want to buy at lease end.

    Cash CAP reduction is the part of your upfront money that is left over, after paying first payment, Cap tax, license and doc fees. it's used to lower the CAP cost (along with the rebate)

    Reasoning:
    Paying non-taxable items (DMV fees, first payment, etc) upfront, keeps them from being re-taxed within the payment. Taxable items paid upfront (CAP cost reductions, acquisition fees, etc) get taxed, either way, so I like to roll them in.
    Most leases have pretty low money factors. Unfortunately, not the case with Kia, so there is some penalty to putting less upfront, compared to a lease with a low MF.
    The other reason: If you go out and total your car tomorrow, GAP insurance will make sure the lease balance is paid off, but it won't reimburse you for anything you paid upfront. If you put a large amount upfront, that amount is at risk, if the lease terminates early. (not that you have a lot upfront, in this case).

    Picked up this car this morning and got confirmation that the sales manager did indeed markup the money factor, but changed it back when I asked to see it. :)

    We ended up paying for the acquisition fee upfront in part because Kia leases come with GAP insurance included.

    The final numbers are:

    KIA Soul EX
    36 month / 10k/year lease

    MSRP: $24,385
    Money Factor: 0.00184
    Initial Cap Cost: $20,865
    Cap Cost Reduction: $1,866.25 (includes $1,260 lease rebate)
    Adjusted Cap Cost: $19,648.75
    Residual Value (58%): $14,085.30
    Base Monthly Payment: $216.61

    Just not a great lease program on the LX trim, it seems.

    And, the dealer discount does seem kind of puny.
