your absolutly right about cold oil changing. if one thinks about it, common sense tells you that indeed all contaminants will have dropped to the bottom in the overnight method. besides, whoever came up with the idea that oil needs to be changed when hot. also who mentioned that you should change by the number scale? that one still has me baffled. imagine going to your service department and suggesting to wait till the engine has cooled to #7 on the # scale. man, that outa make someone look reeeal thmart. besides oil flows almost as fast when cold as it does when hot right? i mean is'nt that the reason we use multi wieght oil anyway?
ALSO, CRYIN' RYAN will find the culprit to his new name in due time. LOL
Ryan - We got some rain in New Mexico! Whatever you did worked! Actually thought about washing the truck Wednesday after work but got out extremely late. Maybe it was the thought that counted. Great information and fantastic "banter" in this topic! Thanks much to all!
I can hear my 5.3 "tick" or "click" when she's along side a building or under my carport. I know that means the tick is constant. You just can't hear it otherwise. The tick increases with increased throttle... As you suggested I've read the other comments. Any suggestions??? I will change the oil over the long weekend. I'm using a double filter currently, but plan to use just the standard AC filter this time. Happy 4th of July to everyone. ksims1
For those of you with dent free Silverado/Sierra's, how did you remove the factory 'bullseye'? I saw another brand new Sierra this morning with a huge dent in the passenger side fender. I have noticed alot of rippled sheet metal on new Silverados & Sierras. Are they just so gorgeous that people get lost in the moment admiring them that they run straight into them or what?
I haven't bought mine yet, but I'm already gettin' paranoid... Wonder if I should get an appointment in the body shop before I even drive off the lot!
Had mine 2 wks to the day and some jerkoff left a nice dent and scrape with no paint left. I wouldnt worry about it. I was so pissed that night i didnt even dance at the wedding but now after its fixed no one can tell where it was dented or scratched. Im telling you though i wanted to rip off someones head that night. Just park far away from everyone else by no cars and you should be fine. Itll only help you itll serve as some extra exercise.
I had school last night. Well i went early to work on some HW. I parked close but no cars around me. I found some friends and we hung out outside. It was amazing how many people walked next to my truck and stared. Some even stopped and took a closer look. I just sat there laughing . As long as they dont touch its cool. Many people do admire these trucks i got first hand experience of this yesterday evening.
last time i waxed it, the next day i brought it to work. some folks walking by stopped to admire...but got too close. so...i set off the panic alarm. you shoulda seen 'em jump. hehe. they stepped back, i turned it off. and they continued to admire from about 5 feet away.
after i detail my truck, you better stay the hell away. i didn't wax it and clean the windows so you can slobber all over it. ok to look, just don't touch. hehe
when my german shepherd is full grown, maybe I'll just leave him in the bed. He'd probably lick them to death, but most people will probably keep a 2-3 feet distance...
Since the ticking sound is consistent and increases with throttle, my best guess would be an exhaust leak. Usually from the exhaust manifold. Appears to be somewhat of a common problem on the newer Silverados. Although some have it and some don't...hmm maybe has to do with what plant it came from or what day of the week it was made. I'd have the dealer check it out. More so since it's consistent and not intermittent.
My dogg loves the back of my truck i think the spray in liner is comfortable on his paws (golden retriver) he would also lick people to death and i think he would bring the onlookers even closer to my truck not furthur away.
Dont worry Kyle truckchic isnt getting the 245's anymore. I persuaded her otherwise
Maybe I should say Looking for a Clue? Anyway, I'm looking for ideas on how to dress up the Silverado. She's a '99 Indigo Z71. Except for the Nerf bars, tonneau cover and bed liner, she's pretty much as purchased. I'm trying to get ideas on how to dress her for work and play. I'd love to get some photos of other trucks. Maybe something will catch my eye. Anyone willing to send some along?
First repaint the truck...dump that Indigo color...was a mistake from GM...and do not put on those black flares...makes the truck look silly. (just joking)
Seriously, are you looking for performance or looks in your mods? One easy area is the grill. The stock Chevy grill looks like cubby holes for roaches. Get a billet grill, awesome looking... Might want to consider mud flaps to help keep the truck clean. Window tinting is a must to help preserve interior. Of course can't forget the bugdeflector to protect the hood. And the list keeps going...
With obyone forget that ugly indigo blue. What were u thinking man. I really hope you didnt put black fender flares on your truck either. If so the best way to make it look better would be to buy a new one and start over. Oh yea if your 35 yrs old and up you probably want to get the carmine red color.
I asked the question (last week?) about removing the emblems. This would be a simple way to give the truck a cleaner/more custom look. I'm going to remove them as I hate cleaning the wax/polish from around them, or the marks/crud they leave behind if they break or fall off.
I see a Silverado here in Seattle that was lowered, detrimmed and had all the handles painted the body color. Looks sharp, but more than I want to do.
Agree, go with some aftermarket rims. What is the best brand as far as aftermarket rims go? And where can I get them? From the web? I'm looking for ones that are cast aluminum with a clear coat finish.
Enough 'Days of our Lives', back to the Silverados!
Someone supplied a link to a clear plastic (3M?) product by a company called XPEL (?) a few weeks ago. It was described as an alternative to a bra. Anybody have it on their truck?
that does work? I sure hope you don't lose to a POS v6 CHRYSLER Sebring....ughhhh makes me want to ....when I think of that car....maybe a little brake fluid on the paint will help to polish it up a bit....hehehehe...
But thanks for the info. I did neglect to mention the Magnum Bug Deflector up front and the mug guards. I went for the Indigo Blue mainly because of the deal I got, it was available immediately and I didn't think it was that bad. Guess I'll have to re-evaluate, eh? I was thinking of window tinting, but I live in RI and I understand that unless it is in the window itself, it is illegal. I've heard some talk of the Magnaflow mufflers giving better performance and a bit better mileage. What's the word on that?
Come on man shes a girl. The way it looks right now i wont lose out dont worry. Might be buying her one of them one day but i have time to change (brainwash) her mind.
I dont know the link they have articles in all the turck magazines though. The ad is with a silver silverado lifted. Pretty sweet looking truck has ground effects and stuff on it. Ill post it tonight if they even have a website. The company is Xenon though
The blue thing i posted was a joke. I too have the blue and i have the fender flares i continuously get razzed about it. Its a very nice color that post was all sarcasm.
The other night I heard a big bang while working in the yard. Walked the half block to the busy street to see the aftermath of a 199x/2000 Dodge 1/2 or 3/4T which had run into three parked cars (1 an older Ford Econoline Van). Amazingly, the Dodge suffered the least amount of damage by far. If the Silverado is close to being as indestructible as that Dodge, I already feel safer not having even bought it yet.
Magnaflow is an excellent choice. If you are going to do your exhaust, go for the catback system not just the muffler. Borla is another good one, expensive though...Of course if your are doing the exhaust, you should modify the intake with an airaid or k&n intake, you may want to add a Granatelli MAF while you are doing the intake. and of course Hypertech III for reprogramming the truck's computer for performance. All in all about $1600 worth of mods. And the list continues...there is also the wood grain dash kits, upgrade at least the rear 4x6 stereo speakers, white gauge kit, catch all mats, headlight mod for keeping all four lights on while in hi light mode, changing headlights for PIAA super whites....and the list continues...
change the head unit to a Kenwood, the rear 4x6 to Polk Audio, was going to run custom boxes but at $279 for just one box (need two), I said forget it and bought a 10" powered bazooka which rattled everthing in the cab...so I downsized to an 8" which is perfect. The music aficionado would not care for the sound of the bazooka. For me with my tin ear...sounds great...
I've been talking to a guy here in Seattle who does alot of stereo installs/upgrades. Has a client list which includes some of the Mariners/Seahawks/Sonics. He has already done a few of the newer Silverados/Sierras. He suggested the following for those who wanted alot of bang for the buck: Add a 2/3/4 channel amp (under seat). Run head unit to front speakers; rear speakers and subwoofer from the added amp. He liked a prebuilt custom molded box made for the Silverado (about $299) but felt a bazooka would be a great add if you want to retain some space in the (rear) seat up position. (Someone posting here said the 10" bazooka was too much, the 8" was just right) Also add a CD changer (come on GM, the space is there why didn't you use it?) He also said that he thought the head unit in the Silverado wasn't that bad so he suggested keeping it. A few other little electronic do-dads (for connections sake) and he said I would be surprised how much better the sound system would be. He said GM has done a good job at making it easier for stereo/etc installers to put things in without it looking like they have.
ryanbab. Besides, I've got thick skin for it. I liked the looks of the Indigo and was looking for a different color this time anyway.
Obyone, I understand there are different series of the Magnaflow exhausts. I'd be interested in something with a rich sounding growl to it. Nothing to obsene. I don't want to wake the neiborhood at 4:30 am. What's the story with Zaino? Getting back to tinting the windows, is there a problem with peeling and air pockets over time?
This will be my first pickup. I'm not a fan of running boards or steps, so would rather not get a set. Are they really necessary? I have found it easy to get in and out of the Silverado. What do the women in your lives say about getting in/out of them?
window tint...you get what you pay for. couple years back i had my ext cab sonoma done (all four side windows and the back window) for about $120. that came with a lifetime warranty against cracking, peeling, fading, bubbling, or becoming that "purple" color that cheap tint sometimes fades to. only catch was: no ammonia or alcohol based cleansers. soon as i get around to it, i'll do my best to match the rear of the cab on the driver's and passenger's doors on my 'rado. and i'll get a lifetime warranty with it. your best bet is to contact your local law enforcement to find out how dark you're allowed to go, then get it matched to the rear half of the cab if it's legal. or go darker if you want and it's legal.
step in height. wife and i are 25/26 and about 5'9". after a month of "hopping" in every day, i was ready for nerf bars. i think they look good and it certainly makes it easier to get in and out. better half really likes it when she's in a skirt/dress. she's happy = i'm happy.
also, i think it's going to help save the edge of my (cloth) seats from fraying/wearing early. i was really abusing them as i drug my butt (wearing jeans or fatigues w/knife & multi-tool on belt) over them a dozen times a day.
i got the westin cps four step pad bars w/lifetime warranty against rust and discoloration. moderately difficult install especially if you're flying solo without an impact wrench. if you want more details, feel free to email me at kwerking@aol.com. i can send you pics, install tips, and where to find them. let me know.
