I have a question about trade in's and taxes in MD.

We have a 2018 highlander. The dealer will give us 32k for a trade. We only owe 25600 on it so we have a ton of equity. The dealer says that the taxes on the new lease will decrease by about 1920 dollars if we trade. As a result the monthly payment will reduce the monthly payment quote by roughly $60.
Could you explain how the taxes are reduced?

Also, regarding the roughly 6300 in equity we have in the highlander.
Carmax is offering 33400 to sell it to them. Would you sell it to them or trade it for the tax cut?
Since we're trading would we have to use it toward the new lease, or could we maybe put 3k down and have them cut a check for the remainder?

The equity in your trade is irrelevant. The tax credit for trade-in is based on the value of the trade. The government has no interest in your loan amount.

It's just a math calculation. If you save more by trading and taking the sales tax credit, then that's what you do. But, tell the dealer the offer you have, and see if they'll bump their offer.

I would definitely ask for them to cut a check, rather than put all the equity into the lease.

I'll make one note: The MSRP includes destination. If they are charging you this separately, on top of the selling price, then your discount isn't actually $3000.

Understood. I will make sure i ask about the freight/destination. Regarding the equity, i'm going to put 3k down and have them cut a check for the remaining 3400. Final payment with 3k down is 448/month.

I confirmed that i was only charged for freight once. So the monthly payment wound up at $445/month with the 3k down. They're cutting a check for $3882 for the difference which I should get in no more than 7-10 business days.
