Why steve, I didn't know you were an old codger like the rest of us. If you remember 1973 you must remember the late 60s and the beginning of the environmental movement. Back then there really was something to complain about.
Maybe that's the problem. Those of us who remember when cars didn't even have PCV valves and rivers would catch on fire know that the world has improved tremendously in the last 40 years. When you know that cars are 98% cleaner now you wonder why all the fuss about the last 2%. Especially when the last 2% will cost more to eliminate than the first 98%.
And then some clown like Al Gore comes along and tells us that the breath we exhale is a pollutant and we have to starve, freeze and go broke because of it.
It just seems a perversion of what I use to think was a good idea.

WE have no central metro area where I live (3 closely located cities) so the best they have come up with is a "Park & Ride" system. They have parking lots at several exits of the freeway in the suburbs. You can drive the short distance to the lot and then board a bus which takes you into the city. Fewer car, less congestion. The buses are usually packed which I guess is good.
I would consider it but none of the routes runs near me and they all go in the wrong direction for my school bus job.
Still I like the idea and people who wish to drive have that choice. I know that the roads are not as full on my way to work,

A lot has changed. But a lot hasn't. You probably haven't heard squat about this one, that's been going on since mid-August and just got worse:
Australia oil well catches fire (BBC)
"Engineers have been struggling for more than 10 weeks to stop the leak which is spewing out natural gas and oil at an estimated 400 barrels a day." The spill is up to 9.7 million gallons now (the Exxon Valdez dumped about 10.8 million gallons).
Oh the best place to pick the vehicle of your choice to steal. One of our large trolley lots is now the number one choice of car thieves. They have a patrol that seems to always be at the other end when a car gets stolen. It used to be theater lots were the ideal choice until the trolley system made it so easy. The perp rides the trolley till he sees a car he has a buyer for. Gets off at that stop. Pops a punch through the door to open and hot wires past the security system. And away he goes. Less than a minute and he is headed down the road in your car. If you want to be green and car pool or ride the transit. Use an old beater to get to the parking lot.

Kind of makes you want to jump in a naturally heated thermal pool outside somewhere, don't it? Isn't it a ball to falsely edumacate ourselves in the name of socialized automotive-related education?

San Diego Solar Projects Get $154 Million Funding
A total number of 192 solar installation projects in the public sector of San Diego were awarded with $154 million in allocations through the Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREBs) program. Seven hundred thirty-nine projects were given $800 million in allocation by the IRS in all. The funding given to San Diego will increase the city's solar energy production by 40 percent as it looks to install 20 megawatts more worth of solar arrays. This new development, secured by a San Diego stakeholders' coalition led by CleanTECH San Diego, is expected to provide hundreds of new green jobs.
"The $154 million for renewable energy projects marks a major milestone for our region and will make a significant economic, environmental, and social impact. This clearly demonstrates the successful collaboration within the various business sectors of our region," said Lisa Bicker, CEO of CleanTECH San Diego.
The 192 projects covered by the allocation of funds came from different public sectors of San Diego like schools, municipalities and a water district. The larger part of the project count - 111 of them, particularly - is for the San Diego Unified School District that will get a share of $74 million. UC San Diego, on the other hand, will accept $15 million for 15 renewable energy projects led by four students of the university. As a whole, the state of California has won $640 million of allocations out of the $800 million awarded nationwide.
I think we'd get a much better return on our money, reducing consumption, and freeing jobs for U.S. citizens, by rounding up illegal immigrants and shipping them back home.
There is a Plan B in the works. One small snag is swapping sunny days for haze.
That welfare is for public works. Not commercial or residential. So how will it help us at all. It will likely make our rates higher as SDG&E loses customers. You keep forgetting that solar and wind is still more expensive to produce than gas or coal fired generators.
Mr. Gore and his partners decided to back the company, and in gratitude Silver Spring retained him and John Doerr, another Kleiner Perkins partner, as unpaid corporate advisers.
The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts. Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr. Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years.

We put wireless meter readers in the Arctic villages back in the late 1990s. The last I heard they were not being used as it put a local native out of a job reading the meters. Just what is needed companies taking away more jobs and giving $millions to the elitist like Al Gore.

Gore Denies He Is Profiting From Global Warming
Big Liar
Save the Planet: Buy a Porsche
We have a friend that her mini van died and she cannot afford another vehicle. She has been riding the bus to her little shop in Alpine. She absolutely hates it. The body odors of the homeless she can live with. The fellow throwing up in the aisle of the bus was horrible. Not to mention the people coughing, sneezing and spreading germs all over everyone. I am so thankful I have never been put into a situation like that. Public transit is just an extension of the Urban Cesspools we have created in this country. Driving across America, we saw millions of acres that are uninhabited and unused. We need to spread out more. Tear down the big cities and send people out in the country.
Careful there. That's what Pol Pot did in Cambodia. :surprise:

You are again reflecting an old stereotype of public transit that apparently will not die.
The VAST majority of riders do NOT experience what is happening to your friend.
I've described the racism and mental health issues my children experienced riding the bus so it's not all flowers and cupcakes as you would wish to believe.
A local car dealer has taken advantage of this perception in his car ads. He touts the benefit of getting away from the "germs and the creepy guy" on the bus as a reason to buy his cars.

But neither is it only homeless, stinky vomiting disease-ridden fleabags.
Both are irrational exaggerations.
Even in the 1st-class section of an airplane I bet there's people I don't want to share air with, or listen to.
Why we wouldn't suspect that there's any political influence here do we?
If there's any Robin Hoods out there, feel free to go after the Gore-type people of the world. If I'm on the jury, you'll get a "Not-guilty" from me.
Riders of public transit, depending on the location, are merely a reflection of a slice of society.
In some cities in the USA, that MIGHT mean that the majority are people without sufficient means to drive themselves.
In Europe, many middle-class people take public transportation and even members of the upper-echelon pay grades do so.
In the USA, in some cases, it's merely people who take the bus for convenience.
Or because they were caught drunk driving and lost their license for a while.
Or who want to ride their bikes to work and because of the distance, must take a bus part of the way.
Or who are college students whose parents decided a car in a city with sufficient public transportation is a waste of money.
Or a high school kid whose parents are unable to drive them to school but the bus/train/subway works fine.
Or a member of a two-job/one-car family whose week it is to NOT have the car.
Public transportation is not merely for the destitute and the down-trodden. People who try to make it seem that way are putting a black eye on something which does not deserve said black eye.
So says Al Gore and the IPCC..... so put down that cheeseburger and step away !!

Eating less lamb and drinking fewer pints of beer will help save the planet, according to a Government adviser.
Diners are being encouraged to eat more pork and chicken instead, as they produce fewer carbon emissions.
A Government-sponsored study into greenhouse gases has found that producing 2.2lbs of lamb was the equivalent of releasing 37lbs of carbon dioxide.
Lamb produces so much carbon dioxide because sheep belch so much methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas. Cows are also damaging, releasing the equivalent of 35lbs of CO2 per 2.2lbs. Previous studies have shown that a herd of 200 cows can produce annual emissions of methane - roughly equivalent to driving a family car more than 100,000 miles

Now the Aussies don't agree with the Brits on this bit of GW lunacy.
If you want to reduce global warming, get woolly - by eating lamb and installing ceiling batts, Australia's top scientists say.
A 220-page handbook released by the CSIRO on Thursday says choosing different red meats can reduce carbon emissions.
It is known that cattle produce more greenhouse gas than lamb or game such as kangaroo.
"Replacing some beef meals with other meat options such as lamb, pork or game will help," it says.

What would PETA think?
Calling the bill written by Boxer and Kerry "an excellent starting point," Rowe wrote, "We urge you as chairman, as well as your colleagues, to take the steps necessary to order the bill reported by the committee so that climate legislation can be considered by the full Senate."
Baucus' vote against the bill reflected the difficulties ahead in crafting a measure that would attract the 60 votes needed for passage by the Senate.
As an influential moderate Democrat, Baucus laid out changes he would seek, including a weaker carbon-reduction target. Other Midwestern and Southern senators from states heavily reliant on coal will seek their own changes, which could upset liberals now supporting the bill.
They know the coal generators will pay more and they will pay less using NG and Nuclear.
Aw, come on guys. We're not all looney. Our government is, (are ?), for sure but most of us just want to live in peace and get rid of our
ruling classelected representatives/public servants. The thing about beef and methane is just a pre-cursor to slapping an enviro-tax on cattle. Please God they don't ever realise that oxygen is dangerous. :surprise:

When you burn one gallon of gasoline (about 6 pounds) you generate about 20 pounds of CO2 !!
While you are not really generating the oxygen molecules, the carbon molecules that are released bond with oxygen already in the atmosphere. Oxygen weights a little over 3 times as much as carbon, so the total is around 20 pounds.
Doesn't seem right, but that is how they measure it !!

I hesitate to post this one; guess we'll be talking about the weather after all.
"Climate scientists normally are wary of associating daily weather events to longer term climate change, but new research does just that by showing that daily record high temperatures across the continental U.S. occurred twice as often as record lows over the last decade."
Warning sign: Record highs are double the lows (MSNBC)
My wife is back on a Prius kick so I may get real intolerable in here as I learn the CO2 poundage stats and start bragging about my green cred. (If I get bad vibes about doing the deal, I'll have to bring up unintended acceleration). :shades:
No siree..............knew it wasn't personal so no offence taken. I don't take responsibility for our loony champage-socialist government any more than they take responsibility for me. Come May 2010 they will, hopefully, be history and we can - perhaps - get on with repairing the huge financial damage they've inflicted upon us.
All this, of course, presupposes that the EU will allow us to, as our soul has been sold to Brussels.
Sorry, totally off topic but at least I didn't get into a rant. Maybe the tablets are working.
Just fuelled up the Volvo with diesel, (ULSD, the only flavour)................£1.079 per litre. Working that into $/USG would just depress you guys & gals so I won't. Suffice to say that the vast majority of the cost was Duty, (tax), and VAT, (more tax).
On-topic, it's a hand up from me, 'cos I don't understand the Fuel : CO2 ratio either. :confuse:
"Climate scientists normally are wary of associating daily weather events to longer term climate change, but new research does just that by showing that daily record high temperatures across the continental U.S. occurred twice as often as record lows over the last decade."
LOL ! They don't mind associating the 5% of weather events that support their theory of global warming....It's the 95% that don't support their theory that they object to.

Don't forget stalling at highway speeds. I think it should be a good time to get a Prius at invoice or a bit below. The newness of the 2010 model should be about worn off. All the gotta have it at any price crowd should be satisfied. The Monday after Thanksgiving should be a good day to shop.
Climate scientists normally are wary of associating daily weather events to longer term climate change
They are making an exception because they have lost much of their credibility with the man on the street. Especially in the hot bed of enviro nuts in the NE that are freezing their hind ends off. They also have to have some story to justify the coldest year on record to their friends in Copenhagen. Do they go to Copenhagen for the drugs? Most of them have to be on something to come up with the theories they push.
Look deep into NCAR and you will find their purpose is to push the whole Man Made Climate Change idea. They are one of many private companies almost totally subsidized by the Federal Government to make the case for Cap n Trade taxation. A total waste of our tax dollars.
Back to unintended consequences, electric cars could cause unintended acceleration of climate change.
European Law Means Electric Cars Could Speed Climate Change, Group Reports
Well, duh, there's no free lunch. The electricity still has to be generated somewhere. (Green Car Advisor)
Ratioing this to Carbon = 6; the CO2 = 21.9845 LB. However gasoline isn't just pure Carbon, having many little H and O atoms in it. So 20 Lb CO2 is probably right.
And you'd probably end up with about 20 LB of CO2 if you burn 6 LB of natural gas, coal, or diesel. And if you use those fuels to produce electricity for your EV, the EV is responsible for producing CO2.
Anytime you use energy that isn't wind, solar, geothermal, or nuclear you are converting fossil fuels into a lot of CO2. So that is why automobiles and all human transport are not even half of the formation of CO2.
But don't even worry about that, for mankind only produces about 5% of the GHG that nature emits naturally. We're small potatoes even just on Earth, in the scheme of things.
Seems like these things happen regularly with or without man's puny contributions.

The Dutch government said Friday it wants to introduce a "green" road tax by the kilometre from 2012 aimed at cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent and halving congestion.
"Each vehicle will be equipped with a GPS device that tracks how many kilometres are driven and when and where. This data will be then be sent to a collection agency that will send out the bill," the transport ministry said in a statement.
Dutch motorists driving a standard family saloon will be charged 3 euro cents per kilometre (seven US cents per mile) in 2012. That would increase to 6.7 cents (16 US cents per mile) in 2018, according to the proposed law.
Every vehicle type will have a base rate, which depends on its size, weight and carbon dioxide emissions.
PS
I think they got their figures wrong. 3 Euro cents per KM equals about 17 cents per US mile. That would be about $2550 per year for the average US driver. GW extortion is raising its ugly head in the Netherlands.
US President Barack Obama came to office promising hope and change. But on climate change, he has followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, George W. Bush. Now, should the climate summit in Copenhagen fail, the blame will lie squarely with Obama.
But few people expected that Barack Obama, of all people, would continue his predecessor's climate change plan. When he took office at the beginning of 2009, it was clear that the success of the UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen in December depended almost entirely on the US -- that America needed to take a clear leadership role on a problem that could shake civilization to its very core.
Obama Lied to the Europeans
Barack Obama cast himself as a "citizen of the world" when he delivered his well-received campaign speech in Berlin in the summer of 2008. But the US president has now betrayed this claim. In his Berlin speech, he was dishonest with Europe. Since then, Obama has neglected the single most important issue for an American president who likes to imagine himself as a world citizen, namely, his country's addiction to fossil fuels and the risks of unchecked climate change. Health-care reform and other domestic issues were more important to him than global environmental threats. He was either unwilling or unable to convince skeptics in his own ranks and potential defectors from the ranks of the Republicans to support him, for example, by promising alternative investments as a compensation for states with large coal reserves.
Obama's announcement at the APEC summit that it was no longer possible to secure a binding treaty in Copenhagen is the result of his own negligence.
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,661678,00.html
I say call off the waste of money with meetings in Copenhagen. Get rid of all the dead weight sucking US dry with all their laptop generated charts designed to promote a flawed agenda. I have no problem trying to reduce our energy dependence. I do have a problem subsidizing the rest of the World on the elitist GW scam.

He has made $100,000,000 selling his scam to the World. So that shows just how bright the average person is.
Where is your source of his GW earnings total? Is that a guess? Or someone's guess? From his tax return?
According to public disclosure information, Gore was worth somewhere between $1 million and $2 million in 2000. Not quite eight years later, Gore is estimated to be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million. While I ordinarily would applaud such financial gains from such a short period of time, I can’t help but to question just how it happened. When you look out at what Al Gore has done, it’s evident that he figured out on a way to capitalize on the creation of Big Green while becoming the official doomsday prophet that has helped to build Big Green into the monetary powerhouse that it has become.
In any other industry this would be considered a severe conflict of interest. In essence, Al Gore has helped to create a fictitious catastrophe, then told everybody what the solutions have to be, and then put himself in a position to capitalize on the hype. It’s not only seriously dishonest, but many people and industries are going to suffer in the wake of this hype while Gore and Big Green bring in millions (and in some cases, billions) of dollars in green money.
Google Al Gore net worth.
PS
There are 11 such tall tales in his movie that many children were forced to watch. Little minds should not be exposed to such rubbish.
On the economics of climate change:
"Public funds on research and development also need to increase dramatically. We cannot rely on private enterprise alone. As with medical research, early innovations will not reap significant financial rewards, so there is no strong incentive for private investment today. While many of us assume that green research and development must have increased dramatically over the past decade, the actual numbers from the International Energy Agency show that not only has this spending not risen, but it has actually declined significantly since the early 1980s."

I think in reality, his net worth is much higher than $100 Million, since he made a single $35 million investment in one company fairly recently.
You guys make it sound like he's a bad guy for putting his money where his beliefs are.
Don't we ALL do that - put our time and effort into investments that match our goals and beliefs?
Has he personally gained any money from YOU, or anyone you know, from nefarious means?
Since then (2000), his net worth has skyrocketed, helped by timely investments in Apple and Google, profits from books and his movie, and scores of speeches for which he can be paid more than $100,000, although he often speaks at no charge.
He is a founder of Generation Investment Management, based in London and run by David Blood, a former head of Goldman Sachs Asset Management (the firm was quickly dubbed Blood and Gore). Mr. Gore earns a partner’s salary at Kleiner Perkins. He has substantial personal finances invested at both firms, officials of the companies said.
From this article, which does not come from a conservative blogspot:
Gore puts his money where his beliefs are
He's no better than many of these bankers and Wall Street execs. who have benefitted from policies they have pushed the government towards. You have a nice group of politically powerful and wealthy people who are feeding each other in this country, and justifying their policies thru the media to the uneducated masses with unproven scientific and economic theories.
If you want another great example of the American public getting lied to and robbed, go over to "Chrysler allies with Fiat", and read the link on my Post 411. I consider this "legalized stealing", and is socially unjust; taking money from the citizens and ruining the economy over the years such that now many can't find jobs.
You should be against anything that further empowers government intrusion into peoples' lives, and takes their tax $ and redistributes to the wealthy and politically connected. Because our politicians make a law and make something legal, does not mean it is JUST, MORAL, or GOOD. History is full of governmental laws that hurt and killed millions.
Unethical? Sure. Legal? Yep.
There is a line between "crook" and "slimebag" and I don't think AlGore has YET to cross it.
