I have a pair of Windows PCs here, a newer one that isn’t so new any longer, bought in 2019, and an old one that is maybe 15 years old. That one originally came with Win7 and was upgraded to 10 some time after it came out. The new one was upgraded to Win 11 about a month ago. So far, I hate it but that isn’t the point of this post.
For a few years when they were both running Win10, I successfully got them, along with a third PC that was here (now retired), networked so files on each were visible and shareable. That was long enough ago that I don’t recall the details but my recollection is that it only required a few gymnastics to make it work. At some point, that all stopped. No idea why. I didn’t really notice at first because it’s not something I do much of but a week or so ago I saw things were different and tried fixing it. I have spent days with absolutely no progress. It astounds me that MS does not provide any sort of wizard or automated process to deal with this. I wanted to blame it on Win11 but can’t because it had failed before the upgrade and doing that did not help. It’s absolutely ridiculous how awful it is to try to do this.
The old machine really should be replaced but it is the one I do the bulk of my transactions on and there is stuff saved in it automatically like passwords to secure sites that I suspect would be nearly impossible to transfer. Plus I have several hard drives hung off it with archival files and the like going way back which I would worry may not be easy to move to a new box (which was part of the reason for trying to get the home network going again).
As for Win 11, it seems no different at its core but they changed everything about the user interface to make it much more annoying but not really an improvement. The old line “everything is different but nothing is better “ seems to describe it well.
We drove up to northern KY to have lunch with my wife's family. I was able to maintain an 80 mph cruise most all of the way up and back. I even went past a KSP cruiser at around 82 mph with no repercussions. On the way back it rained hard off and on, but the only annoyance was a couple of people who turned on their emergency flashers and drove 30 mph under the speed limit- with both hands holding the top of the steering wheel in a death grip.

During the heavier rain I was driving below the speed limit as well but the drivers I referred to were driving considerably below that. In my opinion if you have to drive 25-35 mph below the speed most everyone else on the road is driving because of rain or snow you don’t have any business being on the road. And with their sweaty and trembling fingers grabbing the top of the wheel their ability to take evasive action is essentially nil.
At least their flashers warn others about their driving ability (or more correctly their lack thereof).

On Friday afternoon heading to the shore I was in the left lane doing about 80 and a Nissan Rogue was right on my bumper. Right lane was moving slow and no real place to move over without slowing way down so I camped there for about a mile. Waze pops up a Police alert …. I slow to 73 and of course the Rogue flies by me at 85+ in the right lane. Nails the brakes in front of the trooper and I thought for sure he was getting it… nope. I moved over so he could pass me and then back to my 78-80 cruising speed.

It’s been forever but I used to do what you are explaining. IIRC you have to enable sharing first on the host machine which used to be as easy as right clicking and going to properties. Then from the client machine you search for network locations.
There are possibly settings in your wifi connection that could be stopping this. Check there too and make sure you are setup for a “home” connection and not public (my terminology may be off). I’d actually check this first as it could be the root cause of why it stopped working. If it’s hardwired same thing applies.

Maybe I should just buy a Mac…
Apple products have their own quirks. I have an IPad that I mainly use to watch videos and do very limited online financial activities. Recently I wanted to move some money into a CD but when I clicked on “open new account” I got nothing. Tried it on my son’s computer which runs MS operating systems and no problem. So now I have to visit the bank to do that transaction.
Then a few weeks ago when I was moving money between accounts I noticed that not all our accounts were listed. I could transfer between some but not all. I went to the bank and after they consulted with their IT people they stated that recently they had adjusted their banking program and Apple was blocking full use until they could verify the new code. I had to download the bank’s “app” in order to restore full access. Why that was necessary they couldn’t explain.
Being technologically impaired and paranoid it was a very upsetting experience.

I don't disagree with you about staying home if the weather is too bad (especially with snow here in CO), but it's possible these folks were coming home from somewhere when the weather started and didn't have the option of staying put.
Like any skill, there is a bell curve, with most folks being perfectly acceptable drivers but there is that 10% whose skills are suspect and 10% who consider themselves "expert".
I've had kids whose fathers were race car drivers - not sure that those skills always translate well to the street (think threshold braking). I've had 80 year olds come to us for "refresher" training, even though they've had a license for 60+ years.
Adults can be more of a challenge than the kids, for sure.

Back in 1994 several of my friends and I were driving to Boston for the BMW CCA Oktoberfest. There were four cars in our caravan- an M3, an M6, a 325is and a 735i. All were equipped with a V1 and a CB. We were blasting along when a lady in a Volvo 740 started following us. A few minutes later we hear that two state troopers are parked in the median a couple of miles ahead. We slow down but the Volvo blasts on past. It turns out the troopers were just talking and not running radar so the Volvo lady wasn’t tagged. The lady falls in behind us again and about 30 minutes later we get a report that a trooper is hiding on an on ramp up ahead and using instant-on radar to nab drivers. Our caravan slows down but once again the lady passes us. This time Volvo lady was pulled over.
Nearly 30 years later that lady still holds the title of “World’s Most Clueless Driver.”

At HPDEs women are usually easier to instruct than men as they don’t have any illusions about their driving ability. Particularly with novice students I focus on looking far ahead and looking where you want to go rather than looking at what you are trying to avoid. And I stress that’s even on the street you can get in real trouble if you turn into a corner too early.
Another sobering fact is that a significant number of my students have needed multiple tries to learn to apply the brakes hard enough to engage ABS. A couple of people actually said that they were reluctant to really hammer the brakes because they thought it might make the airbags go off.

When we have some residual snow and/or ice on the roads, I always have my students slam on the brakes in a residential neighborhood (generally not faster than 15-20 MPH) to engage the ABS - so they get the feel of what it's like when it engages.

That reminds me of a story my son told me when he was taking Driver’s Ed in high school. One student ran a stop sign and when the instructor chastised him he responded that since he couldn’t see anyone coming it was ok to ignore it. My son, who had been driving with me for weeks, was told after two secessions that he should go for his license immediately as there was nothing left to teach him.

I even warned Mrs. j before I was about to it so she wouldn’t get spastic. As usual she wasn’t listening and got really scared. The even harder lesson for her to learn was not to tap the brakes especially in snow like every one was taught to do, back in the day.
Since I’m never in the passenger seat when she drives, I’m not sure how she did on her own with that technique but she did well with it, after a few tries, when I took her out in the snow the first time to show her how to do it.

finally had the stars align and had a day where I was home with nothing else to do, and the weather was nice enough to drag stuff out onto the driveway. So I was able to get the garage organized and some stuff moved into the shed. Even started up the snow blower and let it run for a while since it has not run in over a year.
the garage was driving me nuts with junk all over and boxes stacked up. Stuff was in the way, and had no idea where anything was. Now, it is all nice and organized, I know what we have, and where to find it. Almost feels like we are finally moved in (if I ignore a few parts of the basement).

When I was teaching for the Auto Club I made friends with a guy who was also teaching driving, that would be about 1972. He used his Firebird. He started a Driving School and he expanded it into a National Chain. We got along well, I could have been a CEO of a national driving school.

one downside to rearranging the garage. I no longer have the lineup points I was using, so have to figure out new ones. Not an issue with single width doors (just line up in the middle and don't clip your mirrors) but with a single door it is way too east to end up shifted over into the middle
David Hough (the author of the excellent book Proficient Motorcycling) stresses the 12 second rule; look down the road as far as you can and pick a sign or similar- it should take you 12 second or more to reach that point. If you can't see 12 seconds down the road you need to adjust your speed accordingly. Another thing I learned from riding the Speed Triple is to look at the wheels of the cars that are wanting to pull out on the road you are riding; you will always spot the wheels turning earlier than you will spot the whole vehicle moving.

Not real worried about it, since I am the one that usually puts both cars in! Having an extra wide garage with an oversized (18') door gives a lot more flexibility. The last house, with a skinny and short garage, 16' door, and stairs that protruded past the edge of the door required the same precision as building the space shuttle to get both cars in without hitting anything, while leaving space to get the doors open.

I taught driving too and one thing I taught and think about in bad weather, especially heavy rain, fog or snow, don't drive faster than what you can see and stop in. I see cars pass in foggy type conditions, and they are driving faster than the distance they can see and stop in.
When I was teaching for the Auto Club I made friends with a guy who was also teaching driving, that would be about 1972. He used his Firebird. He started a Driving School and he expanded it into a National Chain. We got along well, I could have been a CEO of a national driving school.
———————————————— And now look at you. Sporting around in a horizontally striped shirt.

Hey I don't have that shirt any more....it would be 8 years old!
I'll tell you one thing, you have to be pretty thin to wear horizontal stripes!
I like that shirt but I also still have shirts that were purchased in the last century. 😩

@jmonroe1@oldfarmer50 I have shirts that are a decade old too. One of my tennis shirts is a great BMW shirt. When I bought my 2012 BMW they gave me a $50 gift certificate to use in their shop. The only thing that I could find that came close was a T-shirt that was $60, so I had to pay the $10 difference. It is a great shirt but similar shirts cost about $20 these days!
They also gave me a $25 certificate for Tommy Bahamas, a store I had never been in. I went, jeans were $150, shirts $90, so I ended up with some sports type socks that were $20.....in the stores I go to they are 3 pairs for $10.

Maybe I should just buy a Mac…

Maybe because they know they won’t apply the brakes soon enough.

When I got my first car with ABS (1995 Bonneville), I did the same thing to see what happened.

Another thing I learned from riding the Speed Triple is to look at the wheels of the cars that are wanting to pull out on the road you are riding; you will always spot the wheels turning earlier than you will spot the whole vehicle moving.
