I've bought several of the classic Samsung remotes for 10 or less on Amazon. Look at the buttons' labels. Some have been bastardized with specific labels, e.g., Netflix, rather than the original function for that button on more recent ones. Paid advertising...

Have had good results with Samsung.

good thing about TVs now is they have gotten so cheap you can almost buy them and dispose of like a roll of paper towels! Especially if you get off name brands at Walmart. 65" ULHD units for $299? Crazy. And some of them have perfectly fine pictures and features (even if they might not be built to last the ages). For a bedroom or kids play room, makes a lot of sense.

The following comment does not just apply to Samsung products but everything under discussion here, including both cars and dishwashers along with TVs.

When citing data from either formal surveys of frequency of repair or anecdotal experiences posted by those who are in the business of repairing them, statements along the lines of "well, I had one and didn't have a problem" are quite meaningless. If, say, 30% of owners did indeed have a problem, that is a pretty useful stat, even if the respondent did not.

Yeah, TVs are cheap. In 2020, my wife wanted a Smart TV for the lower level, as she couldn't go to the gym to workout. 60" LG 1080p at Target for $399. Never an issue with it. Great picture. (discontinued size) They're even cheaper now.

Sounds like I missed the Christmas sales according to the Costco person who wanders the TV aisle. He did say the "good TVs" usually go on sale every few weeks. So, will hold on for a couple of weeks before searching again.

I really wanted this TV, as it has been highly rated (except for the previously noted QC issues). And, it's a really good price for what you get.

TVs are items I might consider extended warranties, particularly for this particular one. Once you buy those, the "deal" isn't nearly as good, however.

Strange that both the 55 inch and 65 inch are the same price ($1400). I never saw that before.

FWIW, I think that model/series is one up from the Samsung I just got. 400 bucks more too. I don’t feel like reading through the specs to see what is different/better than the one I got but I’m sure it has the same solar powered mini remote.

So yesterday was my last day at work; it was also a nice final week. Monday the Judge took my two assistant prosecutors and myself to lunch; Thursday and Friday a few attorneys and police officers stopped by. The judge also had some nice things to say at the start of my last motion docket, as did the AG at yesterday's swearing in of my successor. I checked the stats and my office closed 2,534 cases over the past six years, which I'm very proud of. Most of the credit goes to my staff (five in total); I picked intelligent women and Ididn't micromanage them. Also, I had their back if someone gave them any cr*p. It was a great six years.

A very hearty congratulations to you.

So, wise guy, now that you’re not working, what are your plans. Are we going to have put up with more of your posts praising MB and trashing your first love BMW? Just sit back and enjoy the ride. I speak from experience; 10 years for me next month. Couldn’t be happier.

Getting us back onto cars, this pic popped up today on my FB feed from a local who was passing by our Autoport this week. Aside from a bunch of Land Rovers nearby, these are Lambos fresh off the boat.

Say, has anyone had any experience with using Valvoline Restore and Protect oil? It’s all the rage on YT and seems to contain high levels of detergent which cleans the sludge and carbon out of your engine.

I was thinking of trying it out on my old convertible which has 88k miles and maybe on the Kia. I was wondering if it would clean the intake valves on that GDI engine.

The only criticism I’ve seen is that it cleans sludge so well it might clog up the oil filter.

IIRC, the only way to easily clean intake valves on GDI engines is to use a product that is sprayed into the air intake. The difficult ways require disassembly and include walnut blasting or soaking the valves with solvent, brushing/scraping, and sucking the gunk out.

Driving to Indy and guy pulling a trailer in front of me had the trailer license plate come flying off. Luckily I was quite a ways back and it flipped and landed flat on the roadway. I’ve never seen that before. It could have gotten interesting if it stayed in the air.

Actually I do get a bird dog for signing up new drivers but only in my own division in the northeast. That’s not why I push it though. For a car lover it’s a great retirement job. Test driving hundreds of cars with no restrictions, making new friends and finding a ton of new places to have lunch is a low stress dream job.

We were getting groceries today and one of these went by. Can anyone explain the reason for buying something that looks like this? It has so many elements of bad design I don't know where to begin....but small windows might be a start. Is it because someone wants a car that looks macho, or is it to be obnoxious, does it say, "I don't care what you think", or is it a car for techies, or people who hate cars......

Sorry if it offends someone, but tastes vary, just want to know what goes through someone's mind who would buy one.
We had one guy at tennis and when someone showed up in a new car, he'd say, "How come you bought such an ugly car?".

You won't lose it in a parking lot filled with anodyne-looking cars and SUVs.

I've gotten to the point where I don't render an opinion about what someone buys, or why.

Could be your tennis buddy is just jealous of someone else getting a new car.

I have absolutely no desire to do anything after being retired like I’ve been for 10 years next month. I don’t want any type of commitment even if it is for just a few hours a week. Just having be somewhere where I’m expected to be at a given time isn’t for me anymore.

Being retired, I do what I want, when I want and I only do that when I feel like it. o:)

Interestingly I bought a 55 inch Samsung 8500 Series from Best Buy a couple weeks ago to replace the 55 inch Samsung that was in the family room since 2012. Moved that one to the office. The new one is going back because the sound cuts out for a second or two every now and then, very annoying. It’s an OLED job but I don’t see where the picture is any better than the old one that is the plain LED type. This one cost a grand on sale supposedly discounted $400 just before Christmas.

An interesting thing about the new one is that the screen dims when I pause it using the DVR but comes back to full brilliance immediately as soon as I take it off of pause. That’s not a reason to take it back but I thought that was odd until I reasoned that it’s probably a safety feature to prevent burn-in. Another thing I don’t like is the remote is very small without many buttons (no number buttons at all), so you have to get into other screens to select some things you want. Also Samsung got cute with the remote and made it solar powered but you can recharge it via a charging unit like your cell phone but you have to have the newer C type cable so I can’t use the cable I use for my phone to charge the mini remote. So, when it goes back I’m definitely going to get a TV with a full size remote. That remote is ridiculous as far as I’m concerned.

Not sure if I’ll get another Samsung or switch to LG (I’m leaning that way). Maybe Samsung has gone down hill lately, because my 2012 job has been flawless.

The last samsung we bought had one of those small remotes that you mentioned. Hated the thing. Since we already had 3 other samsung tv's, I just started using one of their remotes for the new one. Worked like a charm. Give it a try and if it works just send me a couple of big ones.

Supposedly we are in the middle of a blizzard but only have about 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground. It is cold, 19 degrees and windy, but not a lot of snow. Supposed to get 10 or 12 inches but I doubt it.

I had a bit of a battle with remotes. My Roku TV has a small a chintzy-feeling remote which I somehow misplaced and could not find anywhere. I have a second smaller set downstairs with an identical remote so I used that one while I waited for a $10 replacement to arrive from Amazon. Naturally the original magically appeared just before the new one arrived, so I now have a spare.

More recently my cable box remote began acting up and seemed to be eating batteries at a prodigious rate. I finally concluded the remote was bad so I brought it to the cableco storefront. My setup is a TiVo cable box and the remote appears to have been designed by a chimpanzee, with lots of buttons that I never use but whatever. Turns it they must fail at a great rate as the minute I mentioned the issue they went out back and gave me a brand new remote even without any paperwork being needed. That was quite different when my USB C cable for my iPad stopped working after a few months and I went to the Apple Store. I was there an eternity as they took it out back for investigation and after a lengthy analysis concluded that perhaps some moisture had gotten into the connector and deemed it unrepairable. I thought that was extremely unlikely but whatever. The bizarre part was they had no replacement cables on hand and I would need to come back when they got some. I stopped at a store on the way home and bought one for a pittance. About 10 days later they got the cable and I had to go pick it up. Grrr. I’m still using the cheap generic cable and have no idea where the original genuine Apple replacement cable they gave me is.

my wife got sucked into working half of yesterday (off and on) because something that was supposed to run Friday didn't go according to plan. She was supposed to just kick off the next job in the morning but discovered the prior one had failed and got involved figuring out why, then tracking down people to fix it, then rerunning, checking, documenting, etc. She was not a happy camper. Never having to deal with nonsense like that must me the best part of retirement. Being able to go places when you feel like it, a nice bonus.

Hey it's better looking than the Aztec.

Does the company pay for lunch?

Is that the first question you would ask at the interview? :)

Well since my current employer pays me for my lunch time. I would ask that if they want to hire me away.

Roku has an app that will allow you to use your phone as a remote. I use it every time my wife loses the remote.

I have a vague memory of installing that when I got my first Roku TV but if it is actually on my current phone it is buried somewhere. I forgot I even had it, assuming I still do. Like all things Apple, it is a mystery to me.

LOL, that would be nice wouldn’t? I’ve heard that they used to pay for dinner if you worked late but as usual somebody ruined that by ordering steak and lobster at some high end restaurant. Same with overnight hotel stays for long distance trips. One guy (ex long haul trucker) made it to Tampa and back in 42 hours and some bean counter figured if he could do it we all could do it.

The snow came a lot earlier in the day than I expected. I still have power, so I cooked all three HelloFresh meals I got last week and put them in the fridge.

But, they won't be fresh, if they are cooked first and put in the fridge ......... :)

The other cool thing the app will do is let you use the earbuds on your phone for the audio stream, which worked pretty well the one or two times I tried it.

I'm not so sure about that, especially if the Aztek is a single color.

Supposedly we are in the middle of a blizzard but only have about 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground. It is cold, 19 degrees and windy, but not a lot of snow. Supposed to get 10 or 12 inches but I doubt it.

Right after I posted the above it really started to snow. Looks like we will end up with about 14 in. Temp won't get above freezing all next week with lows -4s and -5s, etc. Wife says she will just kill me outright if she ever sees me pick up a snow shovel again, so I'll have to call the man. I don't even get to play in the snow any more. She is probably right as I am diabetic, have mild heart failure, and just turned 82.

We're supposed to get 8" to 12" by the time it's done tomorrow. Single digit temperatures most of this week, as well..
