I've been a diligent saver (IRA, 401k, HSA) the many past years, so I think theoretically I/we should be financially okey dokey (I still hear my Fido advisor telling me to stop saving, start spending! And rolling his eyes over RMDs, sorry I saved!). But I've always been a worrier about such things; I think I know why but that's between me and my legion of psychoanalysts!
So, my boss knows, and HR knows. Just figuring out when to tell co-workers... In person Town Hall meeting in Toronto later in the month, but not for this guy! Guess I should tell 'em before then.
And, for the every New Year's Day in a row, baby new year did not leave a new car with a big red bow in my driveway.

I didn't think I wanted to retire but MrsD100 wanted us too sell the business and retire. I reluctantly did it. Now I am glad I did, I've had over 12 years to do the things I want to do...and no more dog eat dog world of working. Two things to keep in mind; 1) Have a hobby or an interest to build your days around....a day with nothing much to do goes slowly and it is boring, 2) This one no one talks about. Prices can double about every 10 years, so if your nest egg is dwindling be aware a lot of things will double in price in 10 years.
Our 5 year old grandson wanted to celebrate the New Year, so we all put on party hats and got our noisemakers ready for 7PM and watched Big Ben hit midnight in London on tv. Cheers and Happy New Year everyone.
———————————————— You won’t be able to get away with that much longer and when that day comes, you’re gonna wish you never pulled that on him.

My parents pulled that on us when I was young. We would watch the ball drop in Times Square yell happy new years and then off to bed. Unfortunately being just south of Chicago it was 11 PM when they sent us to bed.
———————————————— And that was so traumatic, you still haven’t forgotten it. Some things are just not forgiveable. Glad I never had that done to me nor did I ever think of doing that to my sons.

I have a question, related to cars unfortunately. If you take your car to an indie garage for say an oil change, do they get all the service information that the car has had from other sources, like the dealer? As an example, if I had radiator fluid changed at the dealers at 50k miles, and I get an oil change at the indie garage at 60k miles, does he know I had the rad fluid checked? And visa versa, does the dealer know what the indie garage has done? Sometimes it's good to know if I think I need say a cabin filter, but I may have forgot I got it done last time at a different service center. Just asking for a friend....

My local watering hole is offering 2 oz. pours of this for $20. 🤔
I’m not a bourbon drinker, so no idea if that’s a good price in a bar.
That’s a very good price for a pour of pappy. Typically $40-$60 a pour by me.
Thanks.. I was wondering.

@michaell, Do you know how they get that texture on the walls? One of my kids has the same or similar but I don't know how to duplicate it.
———————————————— That texture on the wall is what is known as a “knock-down” coat. Which as @Michaell said was there when they moved in. You can’t get that finish with paint alone. It’s done with last coat of plaster but more than likely it was done with a final heavy coat of drywall compound, since almost no one does plaster anymore. The advantage to the drywall installers is that they don’t have to sand between the typical 3 coats of applying compound to all the drywall tape seams. So it’s a big labor savings. The hilarious part of this finish is that they usually charge more for it because it’s popular. So it’s a real money maker for both the builders and the drywallers. Nice work when you can get it.

lol Actually, they forgot to install a back-up camera in the C250. It was an entry model. I think I can get a backup camera that uses my cell phone now that I have a non-flip phone that has data. The 2014 C250 picture taken last year.....people still complement on how much they like the looks;
(some C&Cers may not have been here when it was printed last .....with my horizontal striped shirt)
To bring us back on topic to appliance-adjacent subjects... I "inherited" a pre-lit, 4.5 foot tall Christmas tree from my late grandfather, and as I was preparing to put it in the attic for storage this year, I plugged it in one last time to check for burnt out bulbs so that I could replace them. 1/4 of the incandescent lights immediately went out and all of the tiny bulbs were filled with smoke residue. I'm assuming something shorted out.
Tried to salvage the tree, but the clips they use to attach the light strands are very annoying, and there were 200 lights, and the light strands appeared to be knotted to the tree in some places. I put the tree in the bin. Looked at Target (no Christmas items left) and Big Lots (two of the ugliest artificial trees I've ever seen, and they were $200). Mentioned it to my retired neighbor. She found a 4.5' tree marked down to $7 at Hobby Lobby, and a strand of lights for $2. Score! Added bonus: the spare bulbs I had for the old tree are the same voltage as the new light strand.

You have to be quick on the Christmas stuff.. Either the 24th or the 26th.
Our pre-lit tree was about worn out, last year, and we bought a new one at Macy's on the 24th. A big, tall one.. on display. Original price was $1736 (no typo). I doubt they'd ever sold one for over $899, though. With all the discounts, etc, it went for $320. They even found the original box for it. Put it up for the first time, this year. Pretty!
Don't know if it wasn't bad enough for me to notice, but over the holidays, the TV in my den has some burn in along the bottom and top right. It's an early LG OLED (say 14-15 years old). It's one of those curved, 3D models.
Talked to a local repair shop who said they can't even get those panels anymore.
Really surprised about the burn in as I'm very careful not to display images with watermarks or labels more than a minute or two. And, it seemed to have happened fairly suddenly (or, it was subtle over a long period of time so not to notice until now).
Anyway.....not a dishwasher, but am shopping TVs. Probably go with the tried and true triumvirate.....Sony, LG, Samsung.
Whirlpool frig icemaker quit New Years eve day. Troubleshooting said water inlet valve(s) likely problem. Hard to get frig out far enough to get behind to test for continuity across coils for the icemaker valve. It's built in and I can barely squeeze between the surround and the frig when it's pulled out. So I was dreading trying to get at the water inlet coils.
I took the cover off the icemaker, which is in the door on this model. I saw a small chunk of ice in an odd place between the tangs that rotate to push out the cube from the tray and the surround of the unit.
. Next day I went back and chipped out the ice with tip of a sharp knife, being careful not to put any force on the delicate plastic parts of this ice maker. Voila. It's been working even since.
The icemakers are a typical complaint early on in life of these frigerators. I hope I dodged a bullet here.
I didn't have to call The Man, although I know a regional company that is good and honest. I included "Dodged" a bullet to keep this car-oriented. LOL
Anyway.....not a dishwasher, but am shopping TVs. Probably go with the tried and true triumvirate.....Sony, LG, Samsung.
A couple of weeks ago I was watching a video on TVs to buy/avoid from a tech in the UK (Allen Fleckney TV Repair) who both sells and repairs them. It may or may not be applicable to this market but is likely somewhat helpful. The takeaway from him is to avoid Samsung. He likes LG and Sony. Interestingly, he talks about OLED TVs and burn-in and says they remain problematic.

I am having trouble finding it...I have a Batman one but not with the car....it might be on my home computer. I have Batman ones but not with the C250. Sorry
We’ve had three Samsungs and they’ve all been great. One we sold when we moved cross country, the other we replaced when we decided to mount ours on the wall (it was curved and we needed a flat one). That was 3 years ago. I like getting them from Best Buy too. Their techs and the after-care packages are very good.
Have heard the same about Samsung.....OK for a while, and then things go sideways. Have read "pro reviewer" posts noting misaligned HDMI boards and other build issues. Maybe better recently, though.
Have loved Sony for a long time. But, they totally missed the move to OLED panels. I think they buy theirs from LG. Plus, for some unknown reason, they seem to be priced higher for the same tech.
That leaves LG, which I'm fine with. Maybe Panasonic, who just jumped back into the TV field. Those are hard to find, though.
I've set up more TVs that I care to remember (starting with my first "big screen"...an Hitachi RPTV). So, I don't need the services to set up a TV. Measuring my EV6 rear hatch area to see if I can fit a 65" panel with the back seats folded down.
Interestingly I bought a 55 inch Samsung 8500 Series from Best Buy a couple weeks ago to replace the 55 inch Samsung that was in the family room since 2012. Moved that one to the office. The new one is going back because the sound cuts out for a second or two every now and then, very annoying. It’s an OLED job but I don’t see where the picture is any better than the old one that is the plain LED type. This one cost a grand on sale supposedly discounted $400 just before Christmas.
An interesting thing about the new one is that the screen dims when I pause it using the DVR but comes back to full brilliance immediately as soon as I take it off of pause. That’s not a reason to take it back but I thought that was odd until I reasoned that it’s probably a safety feature to prevent burn-in. Another thing I don’t like is the remote is very small without many buttons (no number buttons at all), so you have to get into other screens to select some things you want. Also Samsung got cute with the remote and made it solar powered but you can recharge it via a charging unit like your cell phone but you have to have the newer C type cable so I can’t use the cable I use for my phone to charge the mini remote. So, when it goes back I’m definitely going to get a TV with a full size remote. That remote is ridiculous as far as I’m concerned.
Not sure if I’ll get another Samsung or switch to LG (I’m leaning that way). Maybe Samsung has gone down hill lately, because my 2012 job has been flawless.

The last samsung we bought had one of those small remotes that you mentioned. Hated the thing. Since we already had 3 other samsung tv's, I just started using one of their remotes for the new one. Worked like a charm. Give it a try and if it works just send me a couple of big ones.
I like my solar powered Samsung remote. But, it quit working after about a year.

Out of warranty.. As @houdini mentioned, any old Samsung remote will work.
We thought it was the remote, but it turned out to be something minor associated with a power outage. Anyway, the folks at Best Buy just gave us another one.
Ours is fine. Not my favorite remote but it does the job. What’s wrong with solar charging? I keep ours under a light on the mantel.
———————————————— Nothing wrong with solar but it’s too damn small. I can’t get comfortable with it. The on/off button is crazy small, I just don’t like it but if I didn’t have the sound problem, I’d live with it.
I also have other Samsung remotes and I’ve used the one for old 55 inch job but it doesn’t do everything.

I wanted to know if the garages could get into a central computer like they do with our medical records in Canada.
Thanks for the input...much appreciated.

That texture on the wall is what is known as a “knock-down” coat.

I figured it was a knock down coating and should have just looked that up.
You put me on the right track, they make a repair stencil.

lol Actually, they forgot to install a back-up camera in the C250. It was an entry model.
I think I can get a backup camera that uses my cell phone now that I have a non-flip phone that has data.

I have finally lost the picture I had of you wearing that shirt. It's a sad day.

Pretty!

LOL

My Samsung (bought 2 years ago when we moved the first time) has been great. And the sound bar sub woofer combo (also Samsung) integrated seamlessly.

Will probably be my last one. Picked this one over the LG, because the feet were pushed in enough from the edge to fit on my existing TV stand.

That doesn’t sound good to me. If I had a remote that quit in a year I wouldn’t be happy with it. So, I guess you got another one. Can I ask what that cost you or was it covered by the warranty? Either way I wouldn’t like that.

Nothing wrong with solar but it’s too damn small. I can’t get comfortable with it. The on/off button is crazy small, I just don’t like it but if I didn’t have the sound problem, I’d live with it.
I also have other Samsung remotes and I’ve used the one for old 55 inch job but it doesn’t do everything.

I just mentioned that I’ve used another Samsung remote. You aren’t the only smarty-pants who thought of doing that so I ain’t going to even send you a single small one. I can’t even say that was a nice try because it wasn’t.
