speaking of Marks, on my way to pick up a pizza tonight. a pale yellow Continental Mark (2 door). Not sure if a IV or V. But one of the "downsized" square shaped ones. Only saw it in my side mirror, turning behind me.

If it’s the downsized it would be a VI

There is no universe in which a Mark IV could be considered “downsized”. :D

Downsized meaning not the bulbous Cannon version. It did have the front fender louvers but from the googles seems the V and VI both had that. Could have been either model I think

2884 per a quick google. Can't imagine that today where anything under 2 tons is considered light.

Lincoln talk makes me think about the change from Mark VI to VIII was as dramatic as 54 to 55 Chevy.

not classic, but obscure now. A Dodge Caliber, that actually looked to be in very clean condition.

I think this is Woodward Cruise weekend. Always hoped to go one time.

Click on link in my link that says "Woodward Dream Cruise Week" for hundreds of photos

During my drive to work yesterday a JDM silver Nissan Laurel. It looked straight and a need of a good detailing. Lowered suspension and ugly wheels. Not my thing, yet interesting.

I saw this in a group and thought it was interesting - window sticker from a 79 450SEL:

Locally, that money would have bought a modest but decently livable house at the time. A decade later, the equivalent car would cost roughly double, due to inflation and depreciating dollar issues.

The car survives today, in a very pretty color and the car looks pristine, park bench bumper might need re-alignment, not an uncommon quirk:

I remember when the Mk II Jetta came out, it was around the time my parents were car shopping for my mom, and that was one I wanted - the modern pan-German styling really appealed to me. My dad wouldn't even entertain the idea, likely too expensive and he knew it might be a maintenance chore - the Tempo she eventually ended up in was likely a lot easier to live with. Come to think of it, surprising that the town we lived in that maybe had 10K people had a VW dealer, but it did as I remember visiting. Those cars are pretty scarce now, latest one is 1992. I recall around 1987 I knew a teacher who had one, and it was an oddball - a 2 door diesel.

Rectangular foglights under the bumper make me think of 70s era MB and BMW.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,528
Today that local modest house would easily be 300K in decent condition while an equivalent new S-class can easily be had for well under 150K, inflation works in fun ways.

I was browsing and found another image of the car, apparently a 53K mile preservation piece and the bumper issue may be an illusion based on angle - looks like the owner has decent taste:

For a few years I owned a regular 1987 Jetta GL. I'd admired that car since it came out in 1985. Kind of like a VW version of the BMW 2002 from 1972 or so. That Jetta really carved corners. Trunk was huge for its size--16.5 feet iirc. Wonderful car when it worked. But that was the catch. It was ten years old when we bought it, but a meticulously maintained one-owner car. That one owner garaged it and had complete maintenance records, and he had so many receipts with significant numbers that I thought I'd never need to fix much. But then I got to be real good friends with my VW dealer. Lots of waiting for parts to come over from Germany, etc.. The second time the front hood latch broke bc of a cheap plastic part that was badly designed, I decided I was done and sold it cheap. I like driving VWs, but decided I didn't like owning them. But I'm sure they're much better today...

I had a 1990 GTI 8-valve, which meant the 1.8L engine found in Golfs and Jettas with an extra 5HP, giving it a rousing 105 total. It must have weighed about as much as a bag of chips though, since it zipped around nicely and at least had the GTI wheels/tires/suspension. Loved that car. Found these pics from the brochure that are identical to mine:

Bottom is a MB R107 SL, looks like it might have a radio alarm sticker on the rear quarter window making it more likely a later run car, maybe a 560SL. Car on top with those side pipes makes me think mid 60s Stingray.

Huh. Thanks to the magic of the internet I was able to listen to that. I have zero memory of ever hearing that. I bought the car new, so it wasn’t removed by a P.O. I wonder if it was even there or if it was, whether it was connected?

BMW had the same, unique and the same for ages. I also recall a distinctive older Honda chime, and I think early Hyundais had one similar.

Could be a joke about VW electrics (but these seem to be the things that work flawlessly for the life of the car), I wonder if there was also a way to permanently override it that someone may have done inadvertently, a weird sequence of door lock-radio button-brake pedal or something silly like that.

I'm not sure what his plan is.. I didn't get to talk to him, today.

He's the original owner. I agree that it's a great time to sell a truck like that. It's a 4X4, too, which is fairly rare.

Looks to be in excellent condition. Toyota's Buick, a tank that will pass 300K if cared for, I see plenty early Avalons around here looking like they survived Mad Max and are still moving along fine.

Missed an opportunity to go with a friend to a regional all-Olds show in Lake Milton, maybe 45 mins. away. Wife has been away a day so figured I oughta be here when she gets home.

I went to this show a few years ago and it was a nice change-of-pace for me. That's where owners pointed out the change in Cutlass hoods from '70 to '71. I think my favorite car was a bone-stock '62 Dynamic 88 Fiesta wagon in maroon with white painted top. It actually said "Fiesta" on an emblem on the tailgate. I knew they made wagons then but don't believe I've seen one before then. Seems like I'd seen Chevy and Pontiac full-size wagons from those early '60's years, but Buick and Olds, much, much less.

No interior pics yet.. but, I know he had upholstery work done.
    131K miles
    Automatic transmission
    He’s asking $17,900

It was his daily driver for about 20 years. But, he was a semi-driver, so not a lot of miles. I don’t think he’s driven it much since the late 90’s. Just occasionally to keep the battery charged and fluids moving.
