When I wached the announcement I could not believe it. Who the heck was this lady. And then they started listing her accomplishments. Wow, she is a Washington outsider, fought and won money for each of her constituents from "big oil" and fought and won against corruption and her and her husband are/were part of a union. Sounds like what every democrat wants out of Obama-change. Only issue I have is she is not experienced in the ways of the outside world. But neither is any other governor who becomes pres. Reagon comes to mind real quick. As long as McCain does not kick the bucket too soon she is a smart cookie and will pick up real fast what is going on overseas.
The 21 days in a row must of been a killer. I've done that a few times in my life and it isn't fun !!! I guess you have to look at all the money you made.
I worked that shift for 26 years and 3 wives. They forget your name while you are gone. They do not forget payday though. 21 days is not bad when you get 21 days off. The problem they were always short handed so you ended up working 4-5 weeks in the summer with only a week off. I have worked 9 weeks straight 12-16 hours per day. That is a killer. Most of it out burying new cable and splicing cable. With the average temperature in the summer of about 50 degrees and rainy. No days off for rain in Alaska.
You can have my spot. All you need is Digital switching, Cellular switching, Cisco certs, Wifi, Cable splicing, wire and fiber, pole climbing, heavy equipment operator, diesel mechanic, generator maintenance and tower building experience and you are in like Flynn. The pay is good, hours long, management sucks, with plenty of time off to spend the money. There is a 500 foot guyed tower I refused to climb. They say it is a [non-permissible content removed] at 30 below zero. When the oil companies call you got to jump. They do not like having their communications interrupted.

I just hope they don't get mixed up and start calling you some other guy's name after 21 days! :surprise:
About the most gruelling work situation I had was back in 1996-97 when I divorced, and had to pick up a second job delivering pizzas to keep from going into bankruptcy. My regular job was 7:30-4 Mon-Fri, and then I'd go in to deliver pizzas at 5. Was usually out by 11 on Mon/Tues/Thurs (off Wed). Usually after midnite on Friday. And then Saturday I'd go in at 5 in the evening, usually get out around 1:00 at nite.
I'd usually fall asleep soon after I got home on Wednesday. Usually slept Saturday until it was time to go into work. And then usually sleep late on Sunday, till 1 or 2 in the afternoon, sometimes later.
I did that for about a year, and then as my financial situation improved I cut my part-time job hours back a bit, and then further as my finances allowed.
I think something with 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off would be a killer though. I imagine after working all those hours for 3 weeks straight, it could easily take a week to recuperate. And then you have two weeks of freedom, but I bet it must be a real drag to have to go back to work after that!
I might have been able to swing something like that when I was younger and more ambitious, but doubt if I could these days. Then again, I guess it depends on the motivation. There's an old saying that even GM can move quickly when its [non-permissible content removed] is sticking up in the air! And financially speaking, in 1996, mine was! :surprise:
I dunno...I thought she looked a bit like that chick that played Elaine on Seinfeld. Here's a pic that makes me think she could have been bunking with Chrissy Snow and Jack Trepper:
And then you have two weeks of freedom, but I bet it must be a real drag to have to go back to work after that!
Getting on a plane and heading back to work got to be a real drag. Especially after 9/11 with all the security. I was ready to retire at 63. Three more guys retired after I left. The oldest was 74 years old. He had to work because he has a wife 30 years younger than he is that likes to spend money. Teamsters did not have any maximum age retirement. I could have retired 15 years earlier. I probably would have had to get a job to supplement my retirement. A Walmart greeter maybe. :shades:
cooter: I really do not know...I never heard of Japan paying us billions...if anyone should have paid, it is Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, who should have given us 5 years of free oil, as they would have been living under Saddam if we did not go in...
rocky: "Those slaps on the wrist for a couple executives ???? Why isn't Alan Dawes and J.T. Battenburg III not in a cell ???"...I am not familiar with those names...which companies did they run???...
rocky, you will just have to realize that your entire upbringing was shielded by a union mentality that protected you from the real world, just like Soviet education did not acknowledge that the USA was an economic giant, instead of the bare desert they taught their students...
if you want some reality outisde of the world of the UAW and Detroit, which is the reality of 95% of the rest of the USA, listen to gagrice...your visions of what the union was are so skewed that it is difficult to think that you really expect those days to return...the days of union domination are over, esp in the auto industry...wake up and smell the decaffeinated coffee...or green tea, if you prefer...
How's the job search going???...I have in my hand an app from Kia and VW...
.I am not familiar with those names...which companies did they run???...
They were executives at Delphi, and were found guilty of "cooking the books"
How's the job search going???...I have in my hand an app from Kia and VW...
I was hired by a food distributor last tuesday. Was told I'd start out at $14.65 an/hr. + commissions for upselling and I also would be doing warehouse work, and delivery's to food catering business, restaruants, and other commercial business with some residential. I was like okay sounds good. I interviewed at their old office and they were moving into this supposed huge warehouse. I woke up yesterday morning, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, positive attitude, excited, and showed up at 8:40 a.m. or 20 minutes before my orientation. I and my would be new hire 5 co-workers stood around until 9:20. I and my 5 would be new hire co-workers signed a mandatory letter stating we agreed we wouldn't hold the company liable for workmens comp if we were injured. One of our bosses said that was for just today. We kind of looked at each other. One of our would be trainers came and got us to bring all of us to the new warehouse. We entered into the new warehouse that was being repainted and stood around for an additional half-hour and I was asked by my would be co-workers what I knew about the job ???? I told them what I was told at my interview and they said that was pretty much what they were told as well but we all agreed something doesn't smell right !!!!! :surprise: Well each of us was assigned a trainer and we had a meeting outside. They were going over the sales from the previous couple of days and we all look at each other. I at this juncture had lots of questions but kept my mouth shut. I went with my would be trainer in the van and we headed out on the road. He asked me what did they tell you all about this job ???? I was told I'd be doing food delivery's and doing warehouse work for $14.65 an/hr + if I sold a larger order to a existing client I'd make some commissions on top of my hourly wage. I was told they had one group that goes out and builds relationships to get new business and another that does the labor to fill those orders and that was why I was hired. My would be trainer said well that isn't exactly true. There isn't no hourly wage, no benefits, and you are a independent contractor. I was like Ryan (my boss) said we got benefits after our probationary period. He said this Van, we are driving I had to rent for $30.00 + I'm responsible for the gasoline in it. I was like your kidding right ??? "Rocky, you would be a steak peddler that goes door 2 door working on 100% commission and I have no idea where they came up with $14.65 an/hr."......By this time we pull into a gas station to get gas for the Van, and I sit their stunned. Told my trainer that I appreciated his honesty because I was lied too regarding the true job description. He said well they are desperate for help and I guess they took to exaggerating the truth just to get people to apply. I said something wasn't jiving in the pumpkin patch and I and the other guys felt something wasn't adding up with this job. We returned back to the warehouse, and I noticed my co-workers personal cars were gone thus they must of said to the hell with this as well.
Marsha7, the job ad said $14.65 an/hr for Warehouse/Driver. This is just one of many reasons why I'm pro-union. I've been lied too by prior employers in the past but never to this extent !!!
I'll take the Kia, job if you hook me up with a bass boat and home on Lake Sidney Lanier, deal ????
"The Rock"
P.S. Do you work for Kia or are you going to apply for VW ??? :confuse:
That is an incredible story. Are there any honest legitimate companies in Michigan? You would probably already be up to store manager by now if you took a job at Walmart
You are a big strapping young fellow with security background. Apply with your favorite Rock band as security. Probably do roadie work as well. Learn about stage and sound setup. Those guys make decent money and get to travel all over the World. Supposedly Michigan has a movie industry starting up. Apply for stage work. My ex brother in law retired from the stage hand workers union with a better retirement than mine.
That is an amazing story...as an atty that does Work Comp, my red flag went up as soon as you described that letter they wanted you to sign...I don't work for either VW or Kia...
Funnt you should mention Lake Lanier...it has been drained down almost 20 feet, as water has been sent to Florida for the last 2 years...boating has virtually stopped, and the lake looks like some dried up desert in some places...$750K houses are probably worth half as much as the "waterfront" is now just a dry beachfront...
You also have to get off this union kick...a union would not protect you from an unscrupulous employer like this...crooked people are everywhere...besides, if things are so bad in Mich, how are you going to sell STEAKS from door to door???...that is like selling Encyclopedia Brittanica in an illiterate neighborhood of chronically unemployed...plus, they expect you to rent a van and pay for their gas???...we all wonder just how do you FIND these people anyway???...
gagrice has an idea...you are trained in security, why don't you do something in that field???...with all that training, and security seems to be a growing field, it makes sense...
Now that is something that may or may not work in GA, since we can use deadly force against any intruder, and many of us have guns, we may not need security folks as much as we can just kill 'em ourselves and have fun doing it...criminals should have no rights anyway...but banks and other buildings may require security personnel, both down here and up there...
Of course, with all the people leaving Michigan, banks may not need security since all the money is being removed by the departing citizens... :P
If you mean ensuring oil kickbacks from the mainland and ensuring good conditions for the annual iditarod, yea, she's experienced. I guess she's pro-environment too, huh? Heck, McCain reportedly called her last SUNDAY to ask her to be the VP candidate after having spoken with her twice, ever. Even his team are scratching their heads in disbelief. He's desperate. He might have drummed her name up on the internet-oh, I guess not because he wouldn't be concerned about something that unimportant...oh, and leave it to the Rep. to use the same old trump card, abortion, to fire the old ignorant masses into a frenzy. I guess abstinence has worked so well while I'm at it. Here in the grand north TX area, we have the highest rates of teen pregnancies AND std's around-no foolin! And I wonder which party has 75% of the local vote...and about the same sense of mind to have a 5th, 5TH child at the age of 44 knowing the odds of birth defects increase astronomically past 40 yrs. That's ignorance. So is having 7 homes and not knowing it. Guess his cheerleader lost count. Can't wait for her to cheer, I mean speak this week. I'm sure to be amazed in contrast to Ms. Obama. :surprise:
Ah, look at the facts. Plain and simple. Obama/Biden = lesser of two evils. The reality is people need to change by using common sense, and do more acting than talking rather than expecting others to do things for them, including the govt. Also by helping others when in need and allow others their own freedoms as long as they do not harm others, if not, eye for an eye. Again, plain and simple.
I appreciate both of ya'lls reccomendations. I have applied for several security jobs including a former employer protecting a Nuke plant. Bottom line is armed security isn't as important as it once was because 9/11 seems like a long time ago and after a few months school shooting and mall shootings become a faded memory until the next one strikes. My ex wife to be destroyed my credit rating with all the forgery she did to me which doesn't help me at all. "Rocky, was and still is very frugal with his money thus my wife did stuff behind my back to get the stuff I would otherwise tell her no on."
I have recently applied for a few more corrections officer jobs and just completed on friday a 30 page application for a county 60 miles south of me. I am taking under serious consideration a security job in the Gulf Coast, because I was called today by a recruiter for a locally founded security company that is national that is preparing for Hurricane Gustav, so we don't have a repeat of Katrina, and all the theft that happened !!!
I might be super pro-union Marsha7, and that will never change but you won't find a nicer, honest, more compassionate guy than myself. I like being around people and care a lot about people in general. Yeah, I even care about you Bob, and wish you well on your life's adventures despite our disagreements !!! My best friend Beth, tells me all the time she wouldn't know how she would of handled her personal issues without I entering into her life. I was and still am the guy many turn too when friends need somebody to talk too. I guess that is one of my strengths, because I'm not one to jump to conclusions and am a very good listener.
As far as Michigan, employers go guys......Let's just say the crooked ones are trying to take advantage of people because they know people are desperate and will take chances on changing careers to improve there situation. That was the case with the five other guys I met who were in the same boat as me more/less.
"The Rock"
P.S. Get board certified in Texas, so I can hire you for family law !!! :P My couple attorney's have sucked me dry of $8K and I'm worse off now than when I started. I for the first time in a long time feel I might be making some traction once again.
hey, man, hang in there. As you have described yourself as sort of a "people person", and I would not disagree with that at all. I agree with the others, pursue something in the Security field. I didn't know it was an "in-demand" field but you have some experience there. Go for a good Security job.
But, I would apply at Kia in Georgia if I was in need of work right now. It is promising that they are still hiring, I would've thought they would be long since full-up in their workforce there in the tulee-berries of Georgia. Big plant making cars people in America want, so, there ya go. I liked Kia when most Americans thumbed their noses at them. I would dig working for Kia, for sure, for sure.
I notice that Boeing mechanics are on the verge of striking. Gagrice, I have to agree with you on the benefits of strikes. Kia and Hyundai are struck pert-near yearly in South Korea. Kia Motors watches every penny, so, those hurt them dearly. That is part of what attracted me to Kia, their concern for watching pennies. But, as a former union worker from the Seattle-Everett area, I have watched in disbelief as our Union rallied the troops to vote down offers that were fine as they stood. Then, after 3 more weeks on the strike-line, the next offer was voted by the Union honchos as being a "Yes" vote. The Membership would toss their pom-poms around a bit and vote "Yes."
I would compare the offers and shake my head in disbelief. Why did these people act this way? The first offer was sound as a pound! Unions are dying fast and I understand why.
And rockford, Williams Kia of Manistee, MI, is selling Kia's like hotcakes still. I know, you don't want to sell Kia's.
I guess we just disagree. I would have still voted for McCain over Obama if he picked Romney. I would not bother to campaign for that ticket. Whether the Democrats are smart enough to realize it, Palin has and will energize the campaign. As Ferraro so aptly put it about Obama. If he was white he would just be another so so Senator with nothing to offer. Not many share your views on Palin for VP. It would not surprise me to see some very prominent Democrats jump off the sinking Obama ship with his pick for VP. Of the four candidates she is the only one that has actually been an executive of anything and been successful in the process. Keep watching. Plus she is very pro Union.
>new hire co-workers signed a mandatory letter stating we agreed we wouldn't hold the company liable for workmens comp if we were injured.
>new hire co-workers signed a mandatory letter stating we agreed we wouldn't hold the company liable for workmens comp if we were injured. (But it was only for today although that's never stated on the form... )
I guess this is another example of why unions weren't and shouldn't be needed to keep employers straight?
Bill Clinton's economy was based on fraudulent dot coms that crashed in March 2000 once revealed that they had no sales, no assets, no NOTHING...Clinton's economy was a mirage, as it lost 5 (or was it 8?) TRILLION dollars of welth when the Nasdaq crashed from 5000 down to 1200 (???)...Pets.com was symbolic of the mirage, when all they had for their billion dollar market cap was a puppet of a dog and some slick ads..
Sorry for showing up so late, but I just saw this.
Although I'm the token libertarian around here, I still have to stick up for Clinton in this case. It's worth remembering that he was most emphatically NOT from his party's liberal wing but was instead a founding member of the DLC - Democratic Leadership Council - which has a pro-business & pro-free trade policy perspective. Among lefty Dems, calling someone a "DLC Democrat" is almost the same thing as calling him a Republican. Lefties have even coined the phrase "Clintonomics" to describe his economic policies, which, in their eyes, put too much emphasis on balanced budgets & too little on massive taxpayer-funded handouts.
About the dot-com boom & bust: here's where some economic history helps. What took place in the late 1990s happens whenever a new technology comes along. Everyone thinks that the new technology will change the world. In the absence of accurate profit projections, investors simply assume that the sky is the limit & bid up share prices to impossible levels. The same thing happened way back in the 1820s with railroad stocks, in the early 1900s with automobile stocks, in the 1920s with radio & communication stocks & in the 1960s with computer stocks.
What investors overlook in these cases is that while the new technology may indeed change the world, only a few of these new companies will turn out to be profitable. The rest will fail. This phenomenon is part of the emergence of any important new technology.
rocky: just make sure your pro-union stance does not get in the way of successful employment...to refuse a job simply because it is not union would be foolhardy, simply because most of your UAW union buddies, if they hang around long enough, may also find themselves no longer in a viable union...security work in the Gulf may be just the ticket...considering the size of Homeland Defense, I find it hard to believe that the need for security is forgotten soon after...you just have not looked in the right places...
iron: You have a point, but the fact is that there is a portion of the Repub party, evangelicals, that are as vehemently pro-life as Obama is pro-abortion (partial birth abortion)...McCain chose a VP that, frankly, caters to, or reflects, numerous factions in the party...that she is an NRA life member and hunts with REAL guns certainly attracts gun bugs like me, plus she IS pro-life so the religious faction approves, which hopefully brings out the Repub base...and both she and McCain have offspring in the military, which is a factor outside of themselves, but still a factor...
imidaz: small employers would never have enough people that a union would even consider...large employers can't move fast enough to leave (like this steak seller could) and would be certainly subject to inspections and work comp laws...here in GA, work comp is only necessary if have have 3 employees or more, so the 1-2 person shop is exempt from comp to begin with...plus, if all your people are independent contractors, you do not need WC because they are not your employees...that is also why is someone comes to work on your house, say, a roofer, you ask for a copy of their work comp policy...it is not MANDATORY to have it, but you can refuse to hire someone who does not have it simply because if they fall off your roof, they will claim against your homeowners policy, but if they have a comp policy that is highly unlikely...plus if they break their arm, you want them to have recourse against themselves and their policy...
All private employers must have workers’ compensation coverage if:
They regularly employ three or more workers at one time; or
During the preceding 52 weeks, they have regularly employed at least one worker for 35 hours or more per week for 13 weeks or longer. All public employers must have coverage.
Any other employer can voluntarily choose to buy workers’ compensation coverage. By doing so, the employer is protected against being sued in the event a worker is injured on the job.
Michigan has special provisions that apply to contractors, subcontractors and sole proprietors. Details on these provisions are in the appendix at the end of this booklet, or you may contact Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth, Workers’ Compensation Agency, Compliance and Employers Records Division at (517) 322-1195.

What a perfect woman! Same age as my wife, but mine is better looking. The union part may even bring over a few union guys. She is quite a welcoming breeze to theRepublican party.
What I cannot believe is how many democrats think Obama has the election already locked up. He is not the 2nd coming. There is going to be a close election and I do not think anyone can really say who is going to win yet. He talks a great story though.
"What I cannot believe is how many democrats think Obama has the election already locked up. He is not the 2nd coming. There is going to be a close election and I do not think anyone can really say who is going to win yet."...yes, they act like they have already won the election and have won veto-proof majorities in both houses...Could it happen???...of course, anything CAN happen...but will it???
Obama has really gor more baggage than most Dems want to admit, but the mainstream media will hide it as long as possible...and there is something else to consider...
Hillary is out forever if Obama wins, as he runs for 2nd term in 2012, and leaves in 2017, making Hillary 68 years old and less likely to run simply due to age...so, strategically, Obama must lose for Hillary to run in 2012, and McCain will not run again at 76...
So, don't be surprised if an October surprise bomb is dropped about Obama, accidentally leaked, not by McCain campaign, but by Clinton campaign, someone like Lanny David or Terry MacAuliff, something so severe it would be along the lines of John Edwards love affair or maybe some Communist membership drive with Obama's signature on it...something that drives every independent away and gives McCain a 57 state blowout...
Just a thought, but NEVER put anything past the Clintons...if they were a wrestling team, even bribed referees could not put up with the shenanigans they would do in the ring, and that is what they will do in politics...they invented the politics of personal destruction and they will use it anytime...
The Department of Homeland Security like everything else has had its funding cut because of the cost of the war. I will not let my pro-union beliefs get in the way of future employment. I need to find out more information regarding the security job in Lousina. How long is the assignment. From my understanding it will be a temp position well that was what the recruiter offered me when the floods in Iowa, hit oh about a month and a half ago or so.
Lokki, I would of been a independent contractor slinging steaks, thus "workmans comp" I believe doesn't apply to the would be employer. It's a legal way to have employees working for you but they aren't really your employees. I see this going on more and more by employers over the last 17 months.
I spoke to dad about the elections, economy, etc, and he's afraid Delphi, won't be around much longer and that would mean thousands more UAW and white collar jobs will be in the unemployment line. I said GM, quit doing car leases which I think will hurt their sales volume. My best friend Beth, said most all the car companies are getting rid of leasing. I believe we are living in very strange times right now and the future is very uncertain for a lot of folks here in this country. I guess all we can do is keep our fingers crossed.
Marsha7/iluv - The Kia, plant is honestly looking for workers ???? That's really hard to believe !!!! :surprise: I would assume they would have workers lined up for miles applying for jobs. I guess a Chinese Manufactor, is looking to build a assembly plant here in Michigan. Go Sams, get a TV, Groceries, and a Geely !!!! :P
Be careful Rocky. I hear Blackwater is hiring down by NOLA, for openings just like what you described. As far as I can tell, you are a straight forward kind of guy . . . perhaps a little misguided on the union issue (in my opinion of course), but still a conscienscious guy, just needs an opportunity to get out of the Michigan union bastion and see how the real world and real market place based on willing exchange instead of one-sided coercion works. Blackwater however is a whole different ball of wax; they are not really private security services as the overwhelming majority of their funding comes from the various governments . . . which means they do the dirty work that government armed forces/police are forbidden by law (and for good reasons). Poverty and the lure of money combined have a funny way of turning impressionable youths into jack booted thugs, who are usually used and discarded ending up in a fate worse than their abuse victims. Best of luck with your job search.
WHOA! "Independent contractor?" "Building relationships?" "No hourly pay or benefits?" Sounds like MLM to me! Run and don't look back! I hate these MLM companies advertising legit jobs and then springing onto you what the real scam is. They're wasting the valuable time of honest people looking for an honest living. I've been fooled by crap like this when I was younger and unemployed! I recall answering an ad for an "alarm installer" and it turned out to be some direct selling bull! If they want sales people they should advertise SALES not "warehouse worker" or such! Liars!
Fact is that Blackwater is a soldier of fortune. They seek to fill the void of the govt not being able to attract enough enlisted men/women. They by no means do the dirty work, but rather behind the lines work at the market rate. If the enemy paid more, they would go over to their side. Their guarding diplomats is not front line work, however, they do get compensated at least ten times that of a regular soldier. Cheney first came up with the idea during the first Bush era and slipped immunity/accountability in.
Poverty and the lure of money combined have a funny way of turning impressionable youths into jack booted thugs, who are usually used and discarded ending up in a fate worse than their abuse victims.
You believe that working for Blackwater in New Orleans would turn Rockylee into a jack booted thug?
You believe that we need jack booted thugs abusing victims in New Orleans?
You really need to get of the basement more. Check the radiation meter, and then scan the skies for black helicopters. If you don't see any, then go down to the lake for a picnic and some softball.. You'll feel better about life, trust me.
Gee, I must live in a different America...... :surprise: :confuse:
are quite legal, ethical and moral...they may not be what YOU want, but that does not make them any less legitimate...now, what they did to rocky WAS improper, to say the least...but in the building industry, most sub-contractors ARE independent contractors...paid by the job or by the hour, no benefits, get a 1099 at the end of the year, and they often must supply their own work comp insurance, and it is a business expense of the sub...not everything can be, must be, or should be supplied by the one who pays you...some industries do, some don't, it is that simple...most self employed folks simply gamble on their own skills and do not have work comp...I don't, yet my ceiling could cave in on me and I could be out of work with injuries and lost pay (earnings)...it is the risk I take...others do the same...
Since GM is in trouble, I assume Delphi is in trouble, too...I would guess that the entire concept of leasing grew so rapidly was because of lower down payments and somethimes lower monthly payments, because they believed they could estimate the residual value of a vehicle in 3, 4, 5 years down the road...
Now, nobody knows...the $40K Expedition that would have been worth $20K after 3 years may now be worth $7K due to fuel costs...so, leasing simply goes away as an alternative that is no longer viable...so we go back to the old days...put up a down payment, finance the car over X years, and take the negative equity hit if you trade it in early...don't forget GAP insurance if you finance in case of a wreck...
If Delphi goes under, it will only serve to shrink the dyring membership of the UAW (and you thought this would be off topic)...it is like a person on life support and they won't pull the plug...it is time for the union to join the dustbin of history and move on in industrial life...
rocky: I don't ACTUALLY know if they are taking apps, but with Kia breaking ground southwest of Atlanta, and VW breaking ground northwest of Atlanta, I would think SOMEBODY is taking apps...maybe you should submit an app just so the HR director of hiring can take an app from an old "union guy" and burn it in his fireplace for heat in the winter...I would wager that former union folks, once they were only one minute into an interview, would spill their union attitude (you mean I have to show up sober, and I will not be restricted to only putting wheels on the left side of the car, and you expect me to cross train???...we never did that at the UAW...DING, you're outta here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)...you would be politely thanked for your time as they, snickering, escortpush you out the door...
rocky: surely there are security jobs that last longer than a month or two...it seems to be a growing field...
lemko: this does not sound like MLM, at least not yet, it just sounds like a commissioned sales job where the more you sell the more you make, and they offer the opportunity...the way they do it is shady, but getting paid by commission is not different then selling New York Life insurance policies, except that NYL is on the up and up, and selling steaks in Michigan may not be the place to sell steaks...hot dogs and burgers, maybe, but steaks???
I said GM, quit doing car leases which I think will hurt their sales volume. My best friend Beth, said most all the car companies are getting rid of leasing.
Not true, they are reducing the huge financial incentives that were part of the leasing. You know, get a BMW 3 or CTS for $350/month. This will mostly hurt those who were over buying and that will be a significant number. So they will buy anyway but something more in their price range. Leasing will be there but just not cheap.
selling steaks in Michigan may not be the place to sell steaks
We have had those guys come to our door. I would never buy food from a door to door salesman. How would you return it if it is bad? It may have been frozen and defrosted 5 times. Sold as dog food and repackaged. I will continue to buy my meat from Costco or my local grocer, thank you.
There are certain Federal laws about sub contractors. Remember some of the Congress people getting in trouble for house keepers that were supposedly subs. As a sub contractor you have to have all your own equipment, cleaners etc. I think in the job Rocky was tricked into you rented there reefer van for deliveries. Or maybe they just put the steaks in an ice chest.
With his intimate knowledge of the workings of the UAW, Rocky should get a job as an organizer. Head down to one of the import auto plants and hang out in the local bar with UAW cards for them to sign.
So the guy that would have leased a BMW 5 will be stuck in a Ford Focus? Those leases were part of our borrowing problem. Very similar to subprime home loans. Giving people money that may not be able to pay it back.
Whoever instigated that kind of lending should be shot at dawn. I think it was Congress wanting to help the poor get a home and car. Now we all get to pay for it.
So the guy that would have leased a BMW 5 will be stuck in a Ford Focus?
No, perhaps a CTS though. For someone who gets a 5 series he made enough to bypass the 3 series and probably had a need for a larger vehicle (family). Maybe a lexus ES. Or perhaps an Impala or Accord. Or sucks it up and keeps the vehicle for more than 2 years and getsw a lease for 5 years.
i bought plenty of u.s. made cars(new) and i don't know what the hype is all about.., if anybody really problems that bad i don't believe you.., i have done alright so far.., i don't want your bad luck if that is what u call it. :shades:
Independent contractors set their own hours along with about 20 other aspects of working compared to employees. Most employers trying to call them 1099 contractors set the hours of work. You can speak to the legal aspects of this much better than I.
A few years back there was lots of publicity about this.
And for Delphi, I can't believe what has gone downhill on all aspects of this.
Delhi just cannot get financing to get out of bankruptcy here. They may have to shut down all US operations and just import parts from outside of US to meet obligations.
I never thought of returning the bad food, simply because I never bought from one of those distributors...I will buy fresh produce froma roadside stand, like peaches, tomatoes, corn, etc, but meat, chicken, pork, etc I will buy from a real market with real refrigerators and a real storefront...
rocky: a serious question, here...have you ever really considered going someplace OTHER than Grand Rapids or Texas???...let's face it, Michigan is on the skids and will be, either for some time or forever...maybe there are other states where your skills are paid a premium???...just because the UAW used to own Michigan doesn't mean you can't leave for better pastures...and there are many places nationwide where everybody is treated fairly and they never heard the word "union"...are you so ignorantly tied to a "union job" that you cannot see opportunity elsewhere???...OK, you like Grand Rapids, but if insurance sales that don't sell insurance and steak sales from a vehicle YOU rent are the job opportunities they have, doesn't logic say it is time to leave???...you are beginning to sound like the people in New Orleans...despite Katrina and now Gustav, they insist on living in N.O....most of us around the nation won't call that loyalty, we call it insane...at least they get a gov't check (welfare) so they may not be smart enough to leave, but you???...aside from your cockamamie union thinking, you have serious training in a field that will always be needed, security...you may even be in more demand if you are trained with firearms, as I assume that the unarmed security guard at our local mall would get paid much less than the armed guard working for Brinks Armored Cars bringing money to banks...
I assume they still have banks up in Mich, altho the smart people with any money may have left the state...don't banks or their suppliers need armed security (yes, I am assuming that you ARE trained with firearms)...is there an opportunity there???
I have taken steaks back to Costco that were tough. You pay $8 a pound for a Ribeye it better be tender. The problem is getting Prime beef. Most is "Choice" which in reality used to be just "Good" rated. Quality beef is very hard to find in San Diego. Only one meat market carries actual "Prime" beef. Filet mignon runs $15 per lb.
I also buy from farm stands. Most are established. Though I have never taken any veggies or fruit back.
PS I buy at Our Costco because it is represented by the Teamsters Union. Not all are Union. Only the ones that were Price Club and bought out by Costco.
Too many folks out there are hurting due to the ill fated Republican policies. There is NO trickle down going on. Many in the middle class (both blue and white collar) are seeing their paychecks eroded by inflation. As prices of gas and food skyrocket, they and their families are looking for a new direction. The seniors too are putting off retirement, because they can't afford to retire. Doing without health care is one thing, but food is another thing. Small businesses are trying to weather the stormy times also. Those who had a second income from the stock market, have seen that dry up.
Do things have to get this bad before people take action? The winds of change are stirring. The rebirth of unionism/UAW are the answer to the failed compassionate conservative choke hold we find ourselves in. This is but a mild response to their abuses and far short of redistributing the wealth of this nation.
One morning about two years ago we awoke to see that the Democrats had won big in Dallas. Dallas the only major city in America to vote Republican was even written off by the Democrats. They didn't even spend a dime in the lost cause. However, the seed has been planted. The tree shall be tended to and we all will eat the fruits of this tree.
Tell GW/Cheney to clean out their desks. They are being given their pink slip. Poor results should not be rewarded. Kick them to the curb. It sure isn't going to happen again. Its the Democrats turn now. Get over it! Deal with it! The American public will elect a smart man this time.
I know you are smart enough to not believe that will happen. You obviously had the same narrow view of America that Rocky has. The Big 3 put all their eggs in the big vehicle basket and lost the gamble. Do you expect Large SUVs to make a comeback? They are the evil villains of the Democrats. Or don't you listen to Al Gore. He wants all electric cars in 10 years. Obama wants you to suck it up and just put more air in your tires. The tires on your Compact car. Who is making those compact cars? Not the Big 3 or the UAW. You can believe all the rhetoric. You will find yourself even more disappointed than you are now. There is no dot.com to bring billions for people to buy SUVs. There is not going to be cheaper gas with the Democrats wanting to raise taxes on already high priced gas. You forget that We were told in 2006 when gas was $2 that if you elected the Democrats to Congress they would get rid of high gas prices. Well I'm waiting. Just not holding my breath. When a Democrats lips are moving he is lying. He does not care about you or the UAW AT ALL.
I honestly do appreciate the compliments but Rocky, has lived out of state for 5 1/2 years in Texas, and worked at a D.O.E. facility called Pantex.
I'm not very fond of Blackwater, or it's CEO Erik Prince, who is from my neck of the woods here in Western, Michigan. I respect Mr. Prince's, military service to our country but that's about it. The guy inherited around a billion or so dollars from the sale of Prince Corporation, to Johnson Controls, a former employer of mine. The family is very well known and respected by the conservative right-wing in Western Michigan. They rub elbows with the Van Andels and DeVos's whom ya'll might know the company called Amway, which the DeVos & Van Andel families founded many moons ago. My point is Blackwater, rubbed elbows with the right-wing and received many no-bid contracts which made Prince, an even wealthier man. I'd have a hard time working for a company that has had as much corruption as Blackwater. If it smells like a fish, then it must be a fish !!!
That's exactly it pal !!! Remember, when I applied for the American Axel, job oh about 6 weeks ago ??? I found out just a few weeks ago that those workers were locked out and were on strike and they were trying to hire scabs. No mention of this anywhere. I assumed it was for new openings at the 2-tier wage scale to replace all the workers who took the buy-outs. I didn't take the job because it only paid $10 an/hr. and a 70 mile drive and I of course would of been even more furious to show up my first day of work and see UAW members holding up picket signs as there isn't a chinamens chance in hell I Rocky, would ever cross a picket line. I don't care if it was the last job on earth. I'd rather starve or die than go against my core belief's.
We had a job ad from a employer in like Wisconsin, trying to find replacements for striking workers. Hey I hated their guts but at least they were honest in their job description and tell you that you were going to be a scab. My grandmother, use to tell us grandkids, that scabs live in sewers and well they might not literally but character wise she wasn't far off !!!!

Hey, she was a union memer.
:surprise:
Getting on a plane and heading back to work got to be a real drag. Especially after 9/11 with all the security. I was ready to retire at 63. Three more guys retired after I left. The oldest was 74 years old. He had to work because he has a wife 30 years younger than he is that likes to spend money. Teamsters did not have any maximum age retirement. I could have retired 15 years earlier. I probably would have had to get a job to supplement my retirement. A Walmart greeter maybe. :shades:
rocky: "Those slaps on the wrist for a couple executives ????

:confuse:
You are a big strapping young fellow with security background. Apply with your favorite Rock band as security. Probably do roadie work as well. Learn about stage and sound setup. Those guys make decent money and get to travel all over the World. Supposedly Michigan has a movie industry starting up. Apply for stage work. My ex brother in law retired from the stage hand workers union with a better retirement than mine.

This thread is about the UAW.
>new hire co-workers signed a mandatory letter stating we agreed we wouldn't hold the company liable for workmens comp if we were injured. (But it was only for today although that's never stated on the form...
I guess this is another example of why unions weren't and shouldn't be needed to keep employers straight?

This phenomenon is part of the emergence of any important new technology.
iron: You have a point, but the fact is that there is a portion of the Repub party, evangelicals, that are as vehemently pro-life as Obama is pro-abortion (partial birth abortion)...McCain chose a VP that, frankly, caters to, or reflects, numerous factions in the party...that she is an NRA life member and hunts with REAL guns certainly attracts gun bugs like me, plus she IS pro-life so the religious faction approves, which hopefully brings out the Repub base...and both she and McCain have offspring in the military, which is a factor outside of themselves, but still a factor...
imidaz: small employers would never have enough people that a union would even consider...large employers can't move fast enough to leave (like this steak seller could) and would be certainly subject to inspections and work comp laws...here in GA, work comp is only necessary if have have 3 employees or more, so the 1-2 person shop is exempt from comp to begin with...plus, if all your people are independent contractors, you do not need WC because they are not your employees...that is also why is someone comes to work on your house, say, a roofer, you ask for a copy of their work comp policy...it is not MANDATORY to have it, but you can refuse to hire someone who does not have it simply because if they fall off your roof, they will claim against your homeowners policy, but if they have a comp policy that is highly unlikely...plus if they break their arm, you want them to have recourse against themselves and their policy...
Report them. They can't make you sign away your workers compensation rights.

The Basics > Which Employers Must Have Coverage?
Perfect typo considering where the VP nominee lives.
The rumor mill is getting really interesting tonight but you'll have to meet me in the The Race to the White House discussion to hear the details.
And no fair editing your post within the 30 minute window or we'll go on strike. :P

Have a wonderful Holiday. Don't eat too much BBQ.

If Delphi goes under, it will only serve to shrink the dyring membership of the UAW (and you thought this would be off topic)...it is like a person on life support and they won't pull the plug...it is time for the union to join the dustbin of history and move on in industrial life...
rocky: I don't ACTUALLY know if they are taking apps, but with Kia breaking ground southwest of Atlanta, and VW breaking ground northwest of Atlanta, I would think SOMEBODY is taking apps...maybe you should submit an app just so the HR director of hiring can take an app from an old "union guy" and burn it in his fireplace for heat in the winter...I would wager that former union folks, once they were only one minute into an interview, would spill their union attitude (you mean I have to show up sober, and I will not be restricted to only putting wheels on the left side of the car, and you expect me to cross train???...we never did that at the UAW...DING, you're outta here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)...you would be politely thanked for your time as they, snickering,
escortpush you out the door...rocky: surely there are security jobs that last longer than a month or two...it seems to be a growing field...
lemko: this does not sound like MLM, at least not yet, it just sounds like a commissioned sales job where the more you sell the more you make, and they offer the opportunity...the way they do it is shady, but getting paid by commission is not different then selling New York Life insurance policies, except that NYL is on the up and up, and selling steaks in Michigan may not be the place to sell steaks...hot dogs and burgers, maybe, but steaks???
Not true, they are reducing the huge financial incentives that were part of the leasing. You know, get a BMW 3 or CTS for $350/month. This will mostly hurt those who were over buying and that will be a significant number. So they will buy anyway but something more in their price range. Leasing will be there but just not cheap.
Whoever instigated that kind of lending should be shot at dawn. I think it was Congress wanting to help the poor get a home and car. Now we all get to pay for it.
A few years back there was lots of publicity about this.
And for Delphi, I can't believe what has gone downhill on all aspects of this.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
rocky: a serious question, here...have you ever really considered going someplace OTHER than Grand Rapids or Texas???...let's face it, Michigan is on the skids and will be, either for some time or forever...maybe there are other states where your skills are paid a premium???...just because the UAW used to own Michigan doesn't mean you can't leave for better pastures...and there are many places nationwide where everybody is treated fairly and they never heard the word "union"...are you so ignorantly tied to a "union job" that you cannot see opportunity elsewhere???...OK, you like Grand Rapids, but if insurance sales that don't sell insurance and steak sales from a vehicle YOU rent are the job opportunities they have, doesn't logic say it is time to leave???...you are beginning to sound like the people in New Orleans...despite Katrina and now Gustav, they insist on living in N.O....most of us around the nation won't call that loyalty, we call it insane...at least they get a gov't check (welfare) so they may not be smart enough to leave, but you???...aside from your cockamamie union thinking, you have serious training in a field that will always be needed, security...you may even be in more demand if you are trained with firearms, as I assume that the unarmed security guard at our local mall would get paid much less than the armed guard working for Brinks Armored Cars bringing money to banks...
I assume they still have banks up in Mich, altho the smart people with any money may have left the state...don't banks or their suppliers need armed security (yes, I am assuming that you ARE trained with firearms)...is there an opportunity there???
I also buy from farm stands. Most are established. Though I have never taken any veggies or fruit back.
PS
I buy at Our Costco because it is represented by the Teamsters Union.
I honestly do appreciate the compliments but Rocky, has lived out of state for 5 1/2 years in Texas, and worked at a D.O.E. facility called Pantex.
