Gary you do understand what supply chain means?
If your going to read it, read it right and entirely. Japan does use temp workers and suppliers. These aren't the natives. I saw the way they treat non-Japanese workers as oppose to their own kind/family. Your failing to see their culture and or seeing their culture from an American prospective.
The golden goose is constipated, having trouble pooping out gold, and its vital signs are rapidly deteriorating!
i saw a recent paystub from a union(uaw) worker and it was less than $30 an hour.
as for benefits - the government has been pushing for benefits on companies for years and that will never stop
the fact of the matter is that not everybody can get a job there - if all you negative people(if you really are people) are smart enough then you would try to work out a bailout plan of your own to create jobs of your own.., and stop your actions of spite
you all seem to have no problems trying to destroy someone elses home and i don't have to think twice about these words
There are alot of rich people in Moscow(russia), maybe they can help.
Think I will take a visit to St. Louis to see the show, I need to get out for a spell.
for message #4799
The war had ended and govt spending on the war ended. Inflation is not adding value to a home. If one is to buy/exchange housing, its a no win situation.
I think that the bad times that started hitting in 2000, and were exacerbated by the 9/11 tragedy, and then pretty much bottomed out around late 2002, would have been much worse, but lowering interest rates and relaxing credit standards sort of delayed it. Didn't make it go away, but just put off the inevitable. And now, we're finally starting to pay for it.
This is for the most part a true statement, except 9/11 caused a war. If not for the war things would have been worse. The war if anything fuels the economy. However, your 2000 DOT COM burst and intervention by the FED to create another bubble are right on the money. Add on that there is little room for the FED to lower interest rates this time and govt spending being the only other way to save us from the so called "rough landing". One could conclude that if and when the war ends, the economy will feel another ripple.

Yes I do. The mom & pop shops supplying parts to the automakers. That was clear in my copy and paste. My response to rocky was his assertion that ALL Japanese autoworkers are treated great. Evidently they are not. By contrast I do not hear a lot of rumblings from the foreign auto workers in the USA. My very high quality Sequoia was built very near to my POC 2005 GMC PU truck, in Indiana. Why would that be? Partly because GM puts more into labor and less into quality parts.
if union workers make $73 an hour then how long will it be before nonunion workers make the same, are you going to try and say nonunion workers do not want to make $73 an hour, - i would say not.
Maybe never. Toyota is threatening to cut back wages. For myself I always wanted more pay. I would say that is human nature. One contract we were dealing with a board appointed general manager that was not the sharpest pencil in the box. He offered us more in our 3 year Union extension than we asked for. The Union boss turned it down and we got what we originally proposed. The reason being is he was going to have to negotiate with AT&T after our contract was signed. The AT&T technicians would want as much as we got and there was no way the Union could get that from AT&T. For the 25 years that I worked for that company we always were at the leading edge of wages and benefits. Mainly because the company had difficulty getting people to work in the Arctic away from family. That was why we made more than the average US telephone Technician. Why does the UAW person make more than the Toyota worker right in the same state? GM cannot compete with Toyota on that playing field.
the fact of the matter is that not everybody can get a job there
I sure agree with you there. The UAW hiring practices have never been FAIR. Either controlled by family, affirmative action or good old boy network. The Hoodlum mentality at the UAW and many other Unions has helped alienate MOST of the US population against Unions. As a Teamster I had a lot of people look down their nose at me. I just laughed it off all the way to the bank.
The Bailout is a loan.., It all gets paid back
Says who? GM already owes $70+ billion to the lenders. They cannot sell their cars at a profit with their high costs. They lose money every quarter. So just how are they going to pay back an additional $25 billion? It is money down the toilet pure and simple. If it is approved which does not look likely it will be a gift from all of US to the few of YOU. It will be more Spreading the Wealth Around. Just more Corporate welfare.
I thought it was Twisted Sister?
I thought it was Twisted Sister?
Actually, it was both of them.
The last time I heard of anyone paying a 16% home mortgage was the the 1970s and early 1980s. Either you owe more than the house is worth or you have the worst credit on the planet.
I do think IF the government is going to bail out ANYONE it should be the homeowners. I was against bailing out the banks and voted against all the Congress people that voted for it. I can see renegotiating the homeowners interest rate to a fixed fair rate. Not cutting the size of the loan. A person needs to accept responsibility for their actions. Adjustable rate mortgages are bad for all but the wealthy to deal with. If you cannot qualify for a fixed long term mortgage you should not be given the loan. Selling homes to people with huge CC debt was just asking for the bubble to burst. It ran up the price of homes for legitimate buyers and caused the mess we are in today. No I do not believe the UAW had anything to do with the current financial crisis. They are partially responsible for the mess the Big 3 are in. A small part of the BIG picture.
You're focusing on the wrong end of the goose; you're looking at the worker bees end. You need to look at the head end where upper management and middle management pay and benefits are established. That end has been over-producing golden eggs (and parachutes) for years. That's why the other end can't put out gold. None makes it that far through the ovum-producing tract.
Upper management is alive and doing better than even the (highly-paid and highly-benefited) UAW. As much as I feel UAW is over-benefited and somewhat overpaid even with the reduced-pay workers taking all the cuts rather than the older ones who drained the pie of cherries..., they haven't gotten what management got.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
So here we are. The Sequoia is a bland-looking, gargantuan, comfortable SUV with a five-star engine, a two-star interior and lousy handling dynamics. In Toyota's quest to become like Ford and GM, they've become just like Ford and GM. Yes, but consider Toyota's Demming-sourced rep for reliability. The ToMoCo juggernaut rolls on.
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2008-toyota-sequoia-platinumreview/
everybody in the hiring business is profiling
And I think it is WRONG. The job should go to the best qualified regardless of race, religion or family ties. I have seen more than I like being a part of 3 different Unions over my 46 year career. I was on the Teamster executive board for a couple years and sat in on numerous negotiations. I know how the thug mentality in the Unions works. I know how management works. It is still the corporations that create the jobs. NOT THE UNIONS. You don't try to squeeze every penny out till it makes no sense to stay in business.
For you to argue that we would be better off with toyota is a joke too
I did not say for one minute that I want Toyota instead of GM. I was commenting on the demise of GM and the continued quality of the one product I own by Toyota. I have had bad Toyota vehicles as well. None are perfect. This will probably be my last Toyota unless they build something in the future I like. They are not headed in the right direction in my opinion. Neither is GM or Ford. I look for VW to surprise US all.
I also agree that GM has wasted a lot of money on upper management, worthless ads and poor investments. So tell me why they deserve to survive? Why we should throw more good money after bad?
And that is the way it should be !
Certain jobs and certain skill levels are worth a certain amount of pay. Employers have every right to expect the employees to meet full requirements of that job. Just as the employees expect their full pay checks.
An above article, about Toyota's Sweat shops in Japan, certainly pointed out abuse of management to the workers, IF the article is true. Keeping in mind there are individuals that work extra hours to satisfy their on own agendas. I have a good friend that was like that. And it cost him his health.
That article also pointed out that Toyota hires "Part Time" employees during peek periods and pay them less than the full timers and more than other manufacturing jobs in the area. With little to no bennefits. What is wrong with that?
Many people don't want to work full time. I'm one of them. I work 3-8 days a month for pocket money. Plus it gives me somewhere to go a few days a month. I don't want and don't need to work any more than that. The PT money allows me to be able to do things that we would not ordinarily be able to do on the Pension and Social Security checks. The full timers can be payed more and it is a win-win for all concerned. I work most Saturdays, which is fine because every day is Saturday for this retiree. The full timers can be off for the weekend and if one needs to be off during the week I get called in. Their wage is about 50% more than mine, and there are people waiting in line for my job.
Not at all unusual for companies to use PT people during peek periods. Why should they go to the expense of hiring full time people, when they are not needed full time. A plus for the companies is that they have the opportunity to observe working habits of those PT people, so that when they actually need to hire a full time person, they can offer jobs to the best workers.
One of our 3 sons has been at Yamaha for many years. When he first started, it was through an employment agency and just for a few weeks. When the time frame was over the employment agency would send him else where. Yamaha liked him and offered him a full time job. They were able to observe his work before hiring him.
If a union shop hires a slug, they are "Stuck" with them. Then they are forced to hire another person that may or may not work out, while keeping the original dead wood on the payroll.
Then we wonder why jobs are out sourced.
To keep the Big 3 in business, some serious changes need to be made. OR, those Billions they are seeking would do no more than prolong the inevitable.
Kip
I think Toyota went the wrong direction with the 2008 Sequoia. I did like the 2006 Escalade as well as the 07 Sequoia. Wife did not like the looks of the Escalade. I will probably sell the Sequoia next year and get either the Mercedes or BMW diesel SUV. GM and Ford have nothing to offer that compares. The Sequoia handles a heck of a lot better with better acceleration and braking than my 05 GMC hybrid PU truck. Not really apples to apples comparison. Just the quality of the product and the workmanship. The UAW let mine get out with doors that did not shut properly. Dealer unable to correct problem. Sold to a guy in LA that just had to have a Hybrid PU. So I did not lose my shorts on the deal.
I was a GM fan up until that truck. The UAW is partially responsible for losing me as a customer.
That pretty much sums it up, you and GM blame me for destryoing their home. I haven't lifted a finger to destroy anything. They have screwed themselves, now they want to blame me if I don't do anything about it.
Unfreakinbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- - !!!
PLEASE NOTE THAT
as far as family goes.., the other day the she behind the desk asked me twice if i was related to somebody else i had to tell her no twice, kinda strange.
I think part time workers have their place and are needed. Where I have a problem is stringing a part time employee along for years a not giving them a full time job if they request it. If they are good enough to keep for a year on part time they should be given a full time slot. I do think companies like Toyota have abused the part timers.
When the time frame was over the employment agency would send him else where. Yamaha liked him and offered him a full time job.
Temp agencies are big abusers of workers. They will send them out then undermine them to get them back. Then send them off to another temp job. My daughter was shuffled like that until an employer told her what the temp agency was doing. She was hired full time by that title company.
I would imagine the UAW contracts protect the workers from extended PT work. Ninety days should be enough for a competent supervisor to tell if a person is going to be a good employee.
Japan has no natural resources and thereby must get some advantage on its competition. Its doing it well, and does so to preserve its economy. That is an economy that depends the American consumer to keep it employed. China on the other hand is concerned with jobs to keep its ruling class, ruling. They are those high level communist and their families. They can not afford any economic turmoil which would lead to a uprising and might bring down this ruling classes power. In order for them to maintain the status quo, they need to keep employment high. They will do anything to help this metric. Up to and including, blackmailing the multi-national companies into moving production/jobs to China, going after high labor industries (like the auto industry), and anything that brings employment to their people. We need to remember that China has one-fifth of the worlds population and by 2025 will surpass America as the largest consumer nation. Certainly, every large corporation/multi-national has their eyes on this consumer market in the near future.
china has a government that would bulldoze your home without asking and without notifying you first(witout you in it) and you would get no compensation for it. you would be a homeless person and no government bailout there.., looks to me like that is the government you all want ! <---- note this please goodbye
A flaw in the SYSTEM??? I would say our government is in TOTAL CHAOS under the current Congress and administration. They don't know which leak in the dike to plug up.
Your 16% loan does have me baffled. Unless it is an older mobile home which are difficult to get financed. I did not think they were doing fixed rates for more than 8%. I would tell the lender if they do not lower your rate you will give them the house back. If you have lots of equity, there should be lots of banks looking for good properties to loan on. I would not count on the government to do anything for the working man. It is not the American way...The working man pays the bills and enables the elite to sail around in their yachts and Gulfstreams. The poor, we will always have the poor. Just the way things are.
Next, I guess you'll be telling us to visit the Chevy dealer to get an unbiased review of the Camry....
Absolutely. He probably drives one...
Not sure what Eminent Domain has to do with UAW workers and whether they are overpaid? If you think our Liberal government will not steal your property. Google Riviera Beach Florida.
This thread is dealing with what the UAW has gone through over the last couple years. The workers feel they have given all they can. The companies are still bleeding red ink. Are the Big 3 at an impasse and better off shutting their doors? Something has to give and it should not be the tax payers. You bail out the Big 3 then you should bail out the 1000s of small contractors that have gone out of business since the building boom screeched to a halt. I know several small contractors here in San Diego that are doing odd jobs at less than half what they were getting a year ago. They are taking a 50% cut to keep food on the table. Why should the autoworkers be exempt?
you know it is always good to hire the best qualified for the job.., there are also times when you may hire someone that may NEED a job..,(issue after issue) and there are issues.., but i like fairness too now.., i don't exactly see eye to eye with you..,
i would not know how to counsel GM about paying their ceo too much or something like that and i don't mind a different level of communcation behavior but like a...... it's totally out my control...., and i disagree with the banks and the $700 billion bailout.., if you are going after somebody why don't you go after them, they won't help me with my home loan of 3 years(for a 3 year old home) at 16%.., and this is 2 weeks ago.., and i am done here..!! now if they cannot help me with that.., then why does the big 3 not get a bailout.., if the government's aim is to help the consumer then why not directly help the consumer by maybe getting the interest rate lowered or something to free up some cash so there will be cash flow, i believe there is a solution but i dont know what, but that does not mean that the bank should get that, i have seen nothing but negative things since that bailout.
Well, I'm opposed to all bailouts as a matter of principle, but I'm the token free market/free trade/pro-capitalism small government classical liberal here. In my view, it's not government's job to ride to the rescue of failing businesses, & taxpayers should not be forced to pay for this nonsense.
Don't assume you're the only one....token.
IF THE ECONOMY IS GOING DOWN the government more than likely will step in to guide somewhere and sometimes its alot of $$$$, of course i would not be in favor of just giving cash away in some out of order fashion, let there be some kind of order, i gotta go now, but i really think there could be some kind of easy way to break down this problem.., as the banks are getting their ways there could be a formula for the consumers here...,
:shades:
I would not consider myself a Libertarian. I did vote for the Libertarian Congressman in my district. And I do agree with all your points above. The sooner the market hits bottom the sooner it can recover. Hopefully in a more conservative fashion. We need to study what happened in the past to try and avoid the same pitfalls. The biggest item on my agenda would be getting back to responsible lending practices and getting rid of the ultra low interest rates. Loaning anyone money at near zero will increase risks. The borrower has nothing to lose but the other people's money.
Most states have the 90 day probationary period. During this period the employee may be dismissed and no reason be given. That also works the other way, the employee may quit and give no reason. I suspect that temps are also judged on other factors. Age may well be one of these reasons. Many companies are self insured and predispositions to illness, older or less than healthy employees can be a liability to insurance claims. Smokers, obese/over weight, sexual orientation, or other afflictions may in fact be taken into consideration and laws to protect against this type of discrimination be gotten around.
Sounds just like the same rational in the recent political change. The conservative extremes and abuses have given way to extreme radicalism in Washington. So it would be safe to assert that anti-unionism/UAW will be back after the failure of the free market system to provide content to a non-union workforce. Just as the all out deregulated laissez faire business environment failed to trickle down anything but a golden shower.
It may not be American who will suffer, we already did. Other than specialty steel, other nations have the lions share of this once American industry. However, China wants the industry/jobs. Once they are forced out of business by a less efficient steel producer, the consumer also pays. In perfect competition the efficient keep their jobs and the consumer wins with lower prices.
TYTE RIDE
Jerry Jones new stadium, biggest and best, home of the Dallas Cowboys in 2009 used Eminent Domain to attain the property. So is this just a LIBERAL thing?
I read yesterday that they were helping those who were 3 months behind on their mortgage.
I think most states are employment at will. Delaware for example - you can quit or get fired at any time, with some exceptions.
Union members typically have more rights under their collective bargaining agreement than what state laws or court decisions give an ordinary employee.
Temp workers are frequently an issue with the UAW. GM-UAW Talks: Temporary Workers Are a Sticking Point
Look at the judges that upheld the case that is responsible. Looks pretty darn liberal to me. Then I think you already knew the answer. My recollection is Fox's Hannity went to bat for the poor people that had their homes stolen in Riviera Beach. Not sure that case has ever gotten settled. It is a greater good, spread the wealth mentality. I am sure the UAW would approve as it creates jobs.
70???What country do you live in????
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/11/national/main4173583.shtml
Well, they SHOULD demand that the products are better, no doubt. But their job isn't to bring wage and bennies in line with the TRANSPLANTS, it's to bring the TRANSPLANTS in line with THEM.
Whose job might that be? I would say the car buyer is still king. GM is not selling enough cars at a high enough price to maintain those higher wages and benefits. Arguably the biggest UAW fan was bragging how his brother got a new GM car for 35% under MSRP. Who is going to take that loss? Will they go back to the UAW workers that built it and extract 35% of their pay? Same for the engineers and management. No one is buying GM vehicles for what it costs to build them. End of story. Cut costs or go broke.
PS
Thanks for the additional 8 years.
Oh, I don't know. If those older employees had a better work ethic and were more experienced than the cheaper inexperienced labor, customer service wouldn't have sagged and sales would be up, relative to the rest of the market. Then they may not have needed to file for bankruptcy.
I as some of ya know did this line of work and have knowledge in the cable and satellite field. I would be working 70-80 hours a week in stores my would be company has contacts with i.e. Circuit City, Walley World, Sams, etc.....One had to sell 10 contacts consistently for X number of weeks to prove you were good enough to be a manager. In my interview I was told I'd be training for 4-6 months and my trainer/would be boss said I'd get a few days training and would be cut lose. This outfit is legit but the problem is that my would be boss whom is a good salesman and use to install DirecTv, back in the day well didn't sign up one person in 8 hours. Sure traffic at the circuit city we were working at was slow but he spoke with enough people to sell something. The problem is DirecTv, isn't competitive enough for people who aren't worried about HD service. For the same price one can get internet and phone for a few bucks more from AT&T or Comcast. yeah, they've improved the satelitte technolgy quite a bit thus the weather doesn't effect it like it once did but peoples perception like GM, is distorted !!!! I was bored out of my mind and couldn't picture myself working every weekend 6+ days a week 70-80 hours a week with no mileage, no benefits, straight commission with a pyramid scheme. I tell you guys one thing the Amway, pyramid scheme is quite common in this state !!! I'm wondering if their is a honest employer left here in Michigan ???
On a positive note despite I taking opening day off of deer hunting (gun) have a interview at a Saturn dealership for automobile sales. I know if I'm offered this job I'm getting in at the wrong economic time but this dealership has a good reputation for treating their employees decent thus what do I have to lose ??? Atleast I would be doing something I like despite the long hours. I will defintely keep looking for something better if I get this job, but I don't think I will be miserable if it takes a while !!!!
I have some news pertaining to the bailout:

In 1980 Chrysler was saved by a loan. It saved the company and Chrysler paid it all back two years early. At the time Chrysler stock was selling for $4. It was $16 a few years later. Wished I bought it at $4.
Of course Chrysler was run by Lee Iacocca. I'm not sure the current management in Detroit has his vision.
In the long run if your workers are costing you $75 per hour and you competition is paying $48 all the loans in the world won't save you.
