Guess over the 25 years they made improvements in the stock filters. My '02 Denali with the stock filter had no buildup like my '00 Silverado with the K&N FIPK.

Not to mention the added in cab resonance from the FIPK tube.

The only differance I've seen with stock filters is that they went from round ones to panel filters.I don't think they are made any better then before. My question is if you hate K&N so much why are you still using it on your '00
Silverado? At least I took mine out when I saw it didn't help.

I don't run the K&N anymore. It is collecting dust on a shelf in my garage. Was thinking of selling it on ebay. I also tried the performance filter with an oiled foam sleeve from Amsoil. That worked a little better though the oiled sleeve collects all kinds of things you wouldn't expect due to its stickiness.

I guess we are learning our lesson the hard way with K&N filters.I don't know how long you had yours, but I sent mine back to K&N and waiting for my refund.I had mine since
December and sent it back a couple of weeks ago.I called them and told them that it did not perform like their ad stated and wanted a refund.I'm sticking with the stock one
and just replace it when needed.I saw a program that says all the products out there that claim more power and mpg
are a waste of money, and if they worked the manufactors would use them.

Well you can get a *little* horsepower gain on some cars, but any gain in HP favors a) cars built with very restrictive air boxes and b) larger displacement engines.

As a trade-off, automakers might build a slight restriction into the air boxes to a) cut down on annoying intake noise, so that your new car doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner, and b) to protect the engine from sucking up water from the road, causing a hydro-lock.

But whether 2-3 HP at only an extremely high rpm is worth the price of a filter and the noise it makes is debatable.

On my last tank of gas with the K&N I got 18 mpg all city driving, plus driving normal.I put on the stock filter on my last tank of gas and got 20 mpg, same driving conditions.
    Plus I lost performance with the K&N.So I would say K&N doesn't work for 06 Charger 3.5 V6.Its a waste of money.It
did help on my wifes Tribute,so it depends on application.

Hey everyone, new to the forum here. I searched this site with not much luck in finding some answers so hopefully, everyone can help me out here.

I drive a 1998 Ford Ranger with a 2.5L 4cylinder engine. I am looking into putting a performance exhaust on it. Right now the exhaust is bone stock. I'm a college student so funds are tight so i can't be spending on muchas bucks on a polished cat back or something. I was thinking just simply replacing the stock muffler and work from there.

Now I have been doing some extensive research and learned that 4cylinders need baffling and louvers to prevent them from sounding like a fartcan weedwacker. I'm looking for a deep powerful clean cut sound. Not thrashy, raspy or junk. I want a stainless muffler because here in town in Ohio, the city has alittle too much fun with the salt trucks so i stainless is for sure. Magnaflow is at the top of my list right now but i'm not convinced. I admire Flowmaster but there not stainless and that's a big drawback for me.

I've looked into hedman glasspacks. I like there glasspacks the best of all glasspacks i've seen because they have louvered baffles and 2stage packing, which leads me to thinking they will give me a good deep powerful sound. I understand glasspacks are not exactly "tuned" like Flowmaster or Magnaflow but that's ok, I accept that.

Sorry for the long post, i just wanted to be detailed as possible. IF anyone has a muffler suggestion, advice or anything I'm all ears. Thank you and great forum! -Mike-

I'm looking for a deep powerful clean cut sound.

Not sure but it may not be entirely feasible to make a 4cyl sound like a V8 no matter what's done to the exhaust...

Has anyone explored Amsoil or AEM filters? Both use a synthetic media which claims the same low restriction or even better than the oil wetted gauze or foam types.
Amsoil already has some available for several makes.
The AEM are aimed at the sport compact market, so are largely cone filters, not panel or ring.
I used K&N on a lot cars and admittedly did not do much logging of mileage or any performance tests per se.
I will say they always seemed to produce slightly more response at initial throttle tip-in..and of course, were generally louder. Very subjective, I know.
I use a TrueFlow in my present cars, and actually like it better. It promises the same low flow restrictions but has a much greater capacity for holding contamination (being foam based). But still has to be oiled to work.
I've read a couple of online tests that show K&N passing a lot of dirt that others contain.
On the other hand, paper clogs up much faster, reducing efficiency and affecting mileage as well as power.
It's easy to come to the conclusion the K&N and it's cousins pass more dirt. And it's easy to say, any dirt is too much. But on a real scale, I've never seen anything that says how much (or kind of..) dirt is TOO much.
And let's face. K&N has been around for over 30 years, I tend to doubt a lot of cars out there sporting their filters have badly scored cylinders and high oil consumption. But maybe it's something you will never know depending on where you live, how you drive, and how many miles on your car...
Sorry if I treaded over old discussions..
  • dboedboe Member Posts: 69
That is something that has concerned me recently when I've read about it from time to time.
I've used K&N over some 15 years with about 4 different vehicles, and have not had one vehicle with a defective sensor.
I wonder if proper filter maintenance is not a key here.. just a thought.
The nanofibres are also being produced by Amsoil (same thing?). and AEM who specializes in sport compacts, mostly hondas.
I like the idea of no oil, and also cleanability with low restriction.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
K&N followed Amsoil in coming out with a foam prefilter to catch additional foreign objects that were currently passing through their gauze filter. I've tried the Amsoil oiled prefilter. While I believe it stops additional particles from entering the engine, the mess it makes installing wasn't worth it to me.

Bought a '05 Titan last year. After all the mods done to my previous truck, the only ones I've done to this one was to add nerf bars and mudguards. I'll pass on the bolt ons for any performance or mileage increases.

Anyone interested in a K&N FIPK kit for a 99-02 Silverado/GMC is welcome to have it for free only paying for shipping as I would rather dump it than having it cost me any more money. Note that I had modded it a little to fit my '02 Denali(took it out after a few days). My email address is in my profile.

I hope I'm not violating the Edmund's terms of agreement as I'm not trying to sell rather to give it away.

I bought this car the 30th of June and it runs great so far. My problem is that the light that shows what gear you are in and the ciggerett lighters don't work. My hubby has checked the fuses and he said that they are good. Do you have any ideas for me to use to find out what is wrong? :confuse:

In my muffler shop, a lot of young, asian, hispanic drivers come in thinking they have to remove their aftermarket mufflers because of receiving a modified exhaust citation. I try to let them know that they don't have to if the car is not excessively loud. In Cal. the vehicle code spells out what a violation is. I am finding a lot of tickets being given for something that is not in violation of the CVC. The cops are just using it as probable cause to pull over whoever they want. I think they are profiling and I have begun to collect names of cited drivers to organize them and file a complaint with the respective city councils under threat of lawsuit for profiling. Why am I doing this? Because I hate seeing people being taken advantage of by law enforcement. I have great respect for the job most officers are doing. But there are some that are causing a fair amount of inconvenience and cost to people who really shouldn't be treated that way. I would like to know if others are hearing about the same problem.
The short term solution is to fight the citation in court. Chances are the cops won't even show up because they know they can't win. Long term solution is to contact others who have been victims through car clubs or whatnot and go to the city councils to complain.
I think it would be interesting to know how widespread this problem is.

I have a 2001 3.0 V6. I'm adding a performance chip, under drive pulleys, higher amp alternator, mass air sensor, throttle body spacer and K&N intake. A friend suggest a decent set of headers and new exhaust. I don't need anything pretty, just functional. My gas mileage has already increased a lot. I don't have technical data but I get about 60 more miles to a tank driving my normal routine.

Anyway, any help with header/muffler selectionwould be great. Like if there is a kit out there with all the gasgets and stuff and if I need a Y pipe or not.

    Thanks

i installed the fipk on my 02 ranger last friday and i have noticed a performance difference but i am having a little problem.

i'm hearing a screeching noise as i'm driving when the gas pedal is in a certain position. (i know, weird) everything sounds normal when the pedal is before that certain spot or after it and i cant get it to make the noise when not driving and sitting in the driveway when i could actually look for the source.

anyone else have this issue or an idea of what i could look for? its really driving me nuts.

I used to have an K&N On my ITR Just replaced it with an Viper much better throttle response, rore, And hearing the it sucking the air is aswom i would recomed Viper over K&N If your gonna buy an induction kit

Induction kits, body kits, car accessories, performance Parts
  • rydayryday Member Posts: 6
I called the support number for k&n and was told that this horribly wrong noise was "normal". he said it was a normal intake noise that had been muffled by the stock intake.

i think he's full of it so I think i'm going to try putting the stock intake tube in and see if maybe its just the k&n intake tube since its made of cheap plastic. though the plastic wouldn't really account for a metalic shrieking noise.

i have a 1997 ranger 2.3, i have headers back exhaust and a k&n filter, its sounds wonderful better then any 4cl. iv ever heard... If i were you i would start off with a muffler and cat, sounds much better then stock+better gas mileage.
  • ridge_runnerridge_runner Member Posts: 4
rangerracer08.....did you change your exhaust? I am wanting to change mine too, but don't know which muffler to use.

Is it ok t0 put headers on my 92 silverado without messing up the computer on it
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
As long as the headers can accomodate the 02 sensor and have a fitting for it (in other words, the headers aren't made for off-road use) .
  • lil_elil_e Member Posts: 6
cool what about putting a b&m shifter kit in it how hard would that be to do
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    You'd probably want this kit:

Doesn't look too hard but you should call 'em up!

We have a 94 Supreme with the electronic climate control. When you try to change where the air is coming out of (defrost/floor/etc) nothing happens. the air is blowing but nothing changes. The air is currently coming out of the defrost and the floor outlets. Any ideas?
    ps: fan works ok

I live in california. The Ca. Vehicle Code (cvc) specifies what a modified exh. syst. is and it cannot exceed a certain decibel level or have certain smog equipment removed. I would imagine Ok. is the same. The cops use this as a means to pull someone over. You have to fight it in court but who knows about those small towns. Just so you know, you are innocent until proven guilty and they cannot pull you over for having a performance muffler on you car otherwise they are violating your civil rights; i.e. unreasonable search and seizure. Good luck.

The intake tubing is usually made out of molded plastic tubing that has smooth bends. It can also be made out of steel tubing. :shades:

the first cold air intakes were made of plastic but today there are a lot of materials to choose from, for example metal like steel or fiberglass etc.

Some people are selling "power enhancing and fuel saving module" on the internet specially on "fleebay".
Actually it is a resister insalled in Air Intake Sensor. It is installed in parallal to the thermister (connecting both terminals of thermister with this resistor) so decrease the resistance of thermister of sensor. Lowering this resistance engine assumes it as hot start. Car computer compares temp or Engine coolant and air intake temp and if difference is greater it pushes more fuel to heatup the engine (I guess). As the resistance decreases with the with air intake temperature.
I am not auto expert but somoe knowledge of electrical circuits.
My question is it good to use this "module " and is really helpful in increasing torque and fuel economy.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
It will reduce fuel economy because it is dumping more fuel into your cylinders. It may help power but nothing noticeable and probably foul your plugs.

They do work (but not for long), and can be noticable. They should not damage anything with in your engine.

They work, but they dont work for long. They are connected to your IAT (inlet air temperature) sensor that connects to your ECU. Tricking the ECU into believe the engine is full of cold air, more dense and packed with oxygen. The ECU responds by telling the injectors to inject slightly more fuel into your cylinders, resulting in a slighty bigger detonation in power. However, this will only work for....ummm....3 minutes at most before it goes into closed loop.

I suppose you could always look cool by telling people you have a performance resistor in your car, sounds good :P

    Hope this helps

Not an experiences induction kit buyer, pipercross and K&N seam to be the way forwards. Not entirely sure what to buy.

If I were fitting an induction kit to a 1.4 16v twin cam fuel injected engine. Which induction kit would give me the best bhp increase, while keeping the filteration at a high level?

    Many Thanks, Chris.

I've installed the K&N 5700 on my 04 Tahoe Z71. Even with a modified exhaust system already installed prior to the K&N Air Intake I have noticed an increase in HP and MPG after I put on the K&N.

I am currently looking for a complete exhaust system for my car. I dont know which type is best (catback, etc.). Also most of the exhaust systems are built for 2000+ Celicas and mine is a 97. How could I find the proper exhaust system or who can help me find one.

    Thank you,
