    Couldn't get you off-line.
Anyway, for tomorrow, in fact tonite, get a gallon bottle and fill it half way with drinking water and freeze it. Top off the rest in the morning. You'll need it.

The Forester debuted @ the NASA AutoX today driven by none other than our Ed (lark6) - mike will fill in the rest ;-)
Ed was knocking on my doors @ ~47 sec. and... he wasn't even pushing his Forester.

Glad you could come out to play :D

Ed is a natural. He and Hypov will hopefully be battling it out in the future on many an occassion!

    For results see http://www.nasanortheast.org/results/2002/gs081802-results.htm

I finished 8th of 8, or if you're scoring from home, dead last. I averaged about 2 seconds slower than Dave (hypov) and about 7 seconds slower than the leaders. My off on the first run was due to the fact that I didn't know which side of the "pointer cone" I was supposed to drive on! Somehow I missed that when I was reading the novice info @ autox4u.com. Looking at the results I can see that I did improve with each run and that's what counts. I managed to do that without really pushing the car or the tires ("performance all-seasons" but street tires nonetheless; everyone else was running on dedicated track tires). I really wasn't sure how the car would perform or, based on talking to the people at the registration tent, whether they'd even let me run (tallest, tippiest car out there). My solo runs were faster than my runs with an instructor (dead weight?).

One snafu that embarrassed me and made me a bit angry: after one of my runs with an instructor a prepared Triumph Spitfire came up very fast behind me. I was waved into the area between the track and the paddock and that's where the instructor decided he wanted to get out. He asked me to stop; I stopped; he got out; the Spitfire passed me on my right as he was getting out; I beeped at the Spitfire and everybody started yelling at me. NOW I know I wasn't supposed to stop but the instructor should have known that as well. I missed that instruction in my reading and it wasn't made explicit during the novices meeting, so I was a little mad at the assumption that novices should know all the rules.

I imagine I was good for a chuckle for at least some of the spectators, as at one time someone said it looked like I was "out for a walk in the park" and at least two people called my car "the flying shoebox." (The NASA people put an extra "r" in "Forester" as well.)

I'm sorry I couldn't stay for the cookout but glad the Subaru crowd enjoyed the beans. They weren't anything special - just a couple cans of Bush's Best. Apologies to the non-pork eaters but I figured there were enough options that they wouldn't go hungry.

Thanks to paisan for the encouragement. Special thanks to Dave (hypov) for the helmet loaner and major moral support, and for hanging out under our adjustable rear wings (a/k/a tailgates) between heats.

    Now the real question is...

Will he be back! Hopefully he'll catch the fever that Hypov did be back in full force with the Scooby Nuts! Next event hopefully it won't be so hot and the cookout will be better. Also the SVX will be running at the next event so I'm sure there will be several Fun Runs with it.

Don't worry about getting poked fun at. The NASA group is actually a bit better than any other Auto-x group I've ran with as far as that stuff. Once you get in the groove of it, you'll understand. Next year I'm going to actually be working on starting a mentoring program for NASA most likely. I want to try to give people a more well rounded instruction rather than just a driving instructor. The mentor program will work with the drivers to help set tire pressures, work the course, everything the novice auto-xer needs to know.

Congrats Ed! At least you were out there. You beat me to the punch! The NY/NJ crew razzes everyone a little. It means they like you. :-)

After hearing Dave talk about it so much at the Woodbridge meet, my wife is even thinking about taking her OB out.

Thanks. I'm surprised there aren't pictures of it plastered all over the web by now.

Toaster is Bob's car, Ed's is the flying shoebox, LOL.

IMO it was a victory for you to even get out there. It's about having fun and improving upon your own times, and that you did, I'm sure.

Besides, looks like your times were quicker than some Accords and V6 Maximas (in other classes).

Looks like mike hasn't gotten a chance to download them yet. :)
In fact, there may not be much. The usual film crew were all running in 'H' that day. Would be a bummer if there weren't any.

Excellent! I'm stoked to hear about a Forester in an auto-x. That's one for us Forester owners.

Did you get any flak about being an "SUV" or were you put in H-class without much argument?

BTW, what tires are you running?

  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
The Forester being allowed to run does speak alot highly of it. Someone over at NASA intended to run a Suzuki Tracker (I think) and got a flat "NO".

Tires? Ed had his daily drivers on. SP Sport 5000 is it? No, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. :D

    -Dave
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
So SUV = no go, tall wagon = green light? The "S" is for Sport, right? ;-)

To check it out with them ahead of time. :)

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
I ran in H and wasn't given much flak (did paisan have anything to do with that? ;-) ) but a couple of the NASA staff warned me that they'd "keep an eye on me" and pull me out if I looked like I was going to tip it over.

Tires were the street tires, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. They show very little wear but again, I didn't push them. An Impreza owner offered to swap on a set of Falken track tires on WRX wheels but I declined as I knew there would be clearance issues.

Next time I'd like to take the forester around during a fun run if you come back! I'll trade you fun runs with the SVX :)

September is a very full month for me - October is better and hopefully cooler for track work. (I neglected to mention that part - it was easy - I called in a number of offs and picked up one cone knocked over by a Miata.)

I think I can do much better next time. Again if I focus on the original goals - to gain better knowledge of the car and to improve my times with each run - then I was successful.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I would have taken the tires, because with a smaller diameter you'd have shorter gearing. Since you pretty much stay in 2nd most of the time, I bet your times would have been quicker.

Think about it - the Forester and the RS have the same final drive and ratios, so only the bigger tires on the Forester make the gearing more relaxed.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Don't forget Ed drives an AT, 1st and 2nd gears are much longer than on an MT, so he actually uses 1st on it. I do like the 5% smaller tires on the XT6 AT when racing though. Not sure if it's the smaller diameter or the R-compound I like though.

    >>I would have taken the tires, because with a smaller diameter you'd have shorter gearing.<<

Remember my P7 fiasco? It's the wheels, not the tires, that would have been the problem. Wrong offset, ya know.

I left it in "3" a couple of times, then went to shifting from "1" to "2" as in my old '79 Hondamatic. Times were better with the latter approach though I doubt that was the primary factor.

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, Ed, but it's the edges of the rubber that rub. So same wheels with smaller tires would not rub, most likely. You didn't have metal-to-metal contact, did you?

The wheel wells would look kind of empty, live Dave's Outback that one time, but I bet they would fit.

I guess it would've been worth a try, but I'm not planning on making this a regular happening. My life isn't going to let me drop everything and become a regular on the NASA/SCCA circuit.

Was hoping to see you out there more than a few x a year, but we'll take you anytime you can get to the track :)

You may get to drive it at the next event! Heck at the next event I may see about swapping cars with you so that I can run a car in G-Grouppe so that I can still get points :) SVX will run in groupe-F

Wow I get to run with the F-troops ;)

Sure, I'll do it again, just not sure when. The fall is shaping up to be very busy at work and may require long-distance travel over weekends. It's playing havoc with vacation time, which I have to use up this year.

Lunch in DC next Tuesday, anyone?

Frank is coming up from Atlanta and we're gonna get a bite on Tuesday 10/22. We're meeting up at the Farragut West Metro (time not set yet), and probably walking over to El Chalan, a Chilean/Salvadorean place on I street that has some good steaks and latin american foods.

Let us know if you can join. So far we got Frank, Mike, Bob, and myself.

either the Glenmont or Wheaton Metro, on Georgia Ave., park there, and take the Red Line in and then transfer at Metro Center. I still have a Metro Pass in my wallet with money left on it. It must be two years old. I wonder if it will still work?

Should work, Bob, if not see the Metro attendant.

I think some car dealers use the Glenmont lot for overflow, so you can check those out.

    LOL, Ed.

Dennis looks almost bald in that pic, but he wasn't last time I saw him. Is that stress, or the effect of that lighting?

    RIP Al Gator.

    Bat wore blue. :-)

Great pics! Man, I really need to get with the times and get a digicam.

juice - I AM almost bald. :-D I just wear a hat a lot. I also recently cut what I did have off.

Yeah, nice pic of me getting ready to run to the bathroom. :-)
The pic of Ed is also a good one.

    Poor Al Gator. :-(

Guess I didn't recognize you without the hat! LOL

My hair line is receeding so fast, you'd think the left side of my head is racing the right side! I just got a buzz cut, too.

juice has as much gray hair as I do. Actually, he has more, as the top of my head receded years ago. ;)

I took my daughter with me when I cut my hair, and when I asked her what color my hair was, she said "white". :-(
