Stephen :-)
Volunteering for that event has 3 great benefits:
1. Meet great people who have a passion for rallying
2. Get Fed
3. Better spectator views (such as being a Course Marshal)

Dennis: have a good trip. Hope you're able to hook up an OB in MB.

This is a pic of some of the "silver" group I caravaned with. I'm the car on the far right.
Pic of my WRX:
Here's the link to the rest of the pics taken by Jamie (aka Subiegal):

Congrats on the awards! Coming in 2nd and 3rd, respectively, still means you beat out a bunch of others. Your wagon looks great!
Mark
Mark: Thanks! I felt good about my win(s). For me it's more the recognition factor of my work/$$ on/in my car that put a smile on my face than the awards themselves. :-)
Stephen
If only the track were the same, eh? ;-)

C'mon out. Some LI folks are caravanning out to my house and then we are heading to NJ. E-mail me directly if you want to come outback164.

Let's try to get as many people out here to strut their stuff!
Maybe Patti can bring a baja that should be out by then!!!!

Very careless Jag driver, not looking both ways before pulling out, forced me into emergency action. Did not expect that I could lock up ABS.
Went "airborne" as consequence of a series of off-camber curves. Not uncontrollable, nor was it the first time I've had wheels off the ground, though usually it's more than two.
I will say this: the Forester is definitely no WRX, nor is it even a 2.5 RS, when it comes to handling. Although its rollover ratings are good and its center of gravity low, its cornering speeds cannot approach an Impreza's due to the height of its supension and overall height.
Ed
BTW- looks, and sounds like you guys had a nice time yesterday.

Graphically: >[ or a doorstop under a box.
Foresters are pretty versatile little cars (again, NOT SUVs), and you can see why so many are clamoring for the turbo.

Better tires helped me a bunch. The Pilot Sport A/S gripped nicely, which I noticed especially when we hit areas where the road surface changed quickly over short distances (rougher to smoother pavement, or wet-to-dry-to-damp-to-wet etc. pavement). They let you know when they're going to break loose as they start to chirp. Too bad they cost so much!
A lowered suspension may have helped, but I would never lower or raise the Forester from its stock height - it's just right for the variety of things it's asked to do. Stiffen it a little but that's about all.
I can always improve the driver but I'm beginning to think I'm not as bad as I thought. Don't want to be overconfident like all the young WRXers who drive up insurance rates as fast as they drive the cars.
Ed
I did noticed before that the wheels do lockup even with ABS @ around 30-40mph (If I had been paying attention) when you stump the brakes. I did that at a light on the way to AutoX. Wasn't awake yet - eyes sees red light but brains weren't registering up till the line. SCREEECH!!!
Well, not as bad as the lockup mike and me experienced (ABS fuse removed).
-Dave
That would have made a difference I bet.
-mike
Dave: did you guys do that with the OB at the auto-x?
Ed
The OB locked up when we did one run without the ABS.
-Dave
RS springs will fit on a Forester - and lower it about 2" IIRC. They look funky, though.
So it should handle like an RS on stilts with 4 bags of cement in the trunk.
-juice
"2" starts you in 2nd gear which doesn't give you enough acceleration, and "1"->"2" manually is slower than just modulating the accerator in "3"
-mike
Okay, now to find a helmet and a hibachi and join you guys on 8/18. I sort of feel like I'm on a mission to show the Forester's versatility: Pine Barrens off-road/rough-roading (okay, once), backroads tarmac twisties (numerous times), now auto-x. Maybe a TSD in the future?
Respect the Forester...

He can even borrow my helmet if he wants.
Forgot about that discussion over breakfast... Sunday was a long day.
-mike
I've got two spare helmets (fullface) one medium and the other, large. I'm sure one of them will fit.
-Dave
Helmets are, like baseball gloves, an intensely personal item; they should conform to the user's body. Since helmets are more likely to be used to save your life than baseball gloves, you'd want one to fit as well as possible.
Thanks for the offer.
Ed
A Snell with M rating will do just fine, and a lot more cheaper than the SA. I do believe that the only difference between the M and SA is that the SA has fire retardant material. I'm currently using a Snell M '00 rated HJC open face ~$100 tax incl'd.
-Dave
Mine is XXL
So I think we have every size that is offered available. At least for the first one. If you get hooked by all means buy a helmet, but for the first time, I'd use a loaner, especially a loaner from one of us.
-mike
Did you register yet?
Better do so if you haven't. Otherwise, all your prep could be in vain.
-Dave
my bad
By what date? ASAP cuz once they have 80 registrant, it'll be closed and you go on standby on that day (August 18, 2002).
-DAve
Ed
You'll receive an e-mail confirming your registration.
No, you do not have to pay if for any reason you cannot run. I don't know about if you've already checked in and paid though that day.

And... the Baja
Patti, If you still have it then, could I borrow it?
-Dave
