Here's the link from the NW i-club. It will be held at Alpental in Snolquamie Pass, WA on 7/20/02. It is sponsored by the Pacific NW Subaru Enthusiast's Club (PNWSEC). Jamie Thomas (aka: Subiegal) is the organizer and Prez of PNWSEC. Would love to see any folks in the NW area show up. All are welcome no matter what or if you drive a Soobie.

Volunteering for that event has 3 great benefits:

    1. Meet great people who have a passion for rallying

    2. Get Fed

    3. Better spectator views (such as being a Course Marshal)

Will be in NC tomorrow through Sunday. So many cool things going on up here that I'll miss.

Dennis: have a good trip. Hope you're able to hook up an OB in MB.

Thanks Ed. The OB would be for my co-worker that's going down. We'll have our own. Have fun in NC.

the 4th Annual West Coast Subaru Meet held 7/20/02 at Alpental Ski Area in Snolquamie Pass, WA. I took 2nd place in WRX engine mods and 3rd place in WRX dress-up. I also won a 1:18 scale model of Mark Lovell/Steve Turvey 2001 WRX Rally Championship car. Apparently this a limited edition of 2800 of which mine is #2171. This should go well w/the 1:18 WRX wagon model I'm waiting on. :-)

This is a pic of some of the "silver" group I caravaned with. I'm the car on the far right.

Just 2nd and 3rd? The refs were biased! ;-)

I don't feel too bad as I was competing against a lot of WRX sedans as well as more wagons than ever before. I've been petitioning for a separate category for WRX wagons vs sedans for next year, especially considering that there are more cosmetic mods out there for the WRX sedans than wagons.

Also, more isn't necessarily better, IMO.

    Stephen-
Congrats on the awards! Coming in 2nd and 3rd, respectively, still means you beat out a bunch of others. Your wagon looks great!

Juice: Really good point...I agree! :-)

Mark: Thanks! I felt good about my win(s). For me it's more the recognition factor of my work/$$ on/in my car that put a smile on my face than the awards themselves. :-)

For some reason the lack of fender flares on that last pic of steve's car looks really good- clean line from the headlight all the way back.

If only the track were the same, eh? ;-)

    Exactly...sometimes I do have "track-width" envy. :-)

Nice ride yesterday. Saw Lark lockup the left side wheels almost takingout a Jaguar! Also saw him at another point remove the left side wheels from the ground! :)

Sept 21st we'll be running a trailride to the Pine Barrens!

Let's try to get as many people out here to strut their stuff!

Maybe Patti can bring a baja that should be out by then!!!!

    Hmmm, paisan, incriminating me? ;-p

Very careless Jag driver, not looking both ways before pulling out, forced me into emergency action. Did not expect that I could lock up ABS.

Went "airborne" as consequence of a series of off-camber curves. Not uncontrollable, nor was it the first time I've had wheels off the ground, though usually it's more than two.

I will say this: the Forester is definitely no WRX, nor is it even a 2.5 RS, when it comes to handling. Although its rollover ratings are good and its center of gravity low, its cornering speeds cannot approach an Impreza's due to the height of its supension and overall height.

Mike- Assuming I'm back from a drive out to Kentucky, you can count me in. I have to make sure when we come back.

BTW- looks, and sounds like you guys had a nice time yesterday.

I think the Forester did great. I know I had a hard time keeping up with the XT6 at times. Other times the nose was under ed's bumper! Of course I was using the Bridgerock Blowtenza RE92s with about 10K miles and 4 or 5 auto-xes on em.

"Other times the nose was under ed's bumper!"

Graphically: >[ or a doorstop under a box.

Foresters are pretty versatile little cars (again, NOT SUVs), and you can see why so many are clamoring for the turbo.

Ed was power the issue? For instance I didn't really have a power problem with my car, but better tires and/or suspension would have helped me out a lot.

    -mike
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
Power, yes, or maybe I'd have been better off with a manual instead of the auto I have. There were a couple of times where I felt it a bit of a struggle to make it up hills, which would've been helped by more hp/torque in the 2500-4500 range or by me shifting instead of leaving it in "D" and letting it do its thing. I remember thinking as we hit some of those sharp rising left-handers how the WRXes would climb them then shoot off like fighter jets off a steam catapult, while I thought "okay, not too hot through here, use throttle not brake, don't let it get too far outside on curve due to body lean" while chanting the "slow in, fast out" mantra.

Better tires helped me a bunch. The Pilot Sport A/S gripped nicely, which I noticed especially when we hit areas where the road surface changed quickly over short distances (rougher to smoother pavement, or wet-to-dry-to-damp-to-wet etc. pavement). They let you know when they're going to break loose as they start to chirp. Too bad they cost so much!

A lowered suspension may have helped, but I would never lower or raise the Forester from its stock height - it's just right for the variety of things it's asked to do. Stiffen it a little but that's about all.

I can always improve the driver but I'm beginning to think I'm not as bad as I thought. Don't want to be overconfident like all the young WRXers who drive up insurance rates as fast as they drive the cars.

    Ed-
I did noticed before that the wheels do lockup even with ABS @ around 30-40mph (If I had been paying attention) when you stump the brakes. I did that at a light on the way to AutoX. Wasn't awake yet - eyes sees red light but brains weren't registering up till the line. SCREEECH!!!
Well, not as bad as the lockup mike and me experienced (ABS fuse removed). :D

I didn't even think to tell you to run it in "3" the whole day. With my ATs I always runin 3 when doing spirited runs, like we were doing all day.

That would have made a difference I bet.

    -mike
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
The only time I went to "3" was on very steep hills.

Dave: did you guys do that with the OB at the auto-x?

    Ed
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    Ed-
The OB locked up when we did one run without the ABS. :D Otherwise, it hasn't lock up.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Compared to a '98 Impreza, the Forester has about 200-300 lbs of ballast, depending on the models you compare.

RS springs will fit on a Forester - and lower it about 2" IIRC. They look funky, though.

So it should handle like an RS on stilts with 4 bags of cement in the trunk.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Also we ran it in "3" not "D" nor "1" nor "2"

"2" starts you in 2nd gear which doesn't give you enough acceleration, and "1"->"2" manually is slower than just modulating the accerator in "3"

That I got from our breakfast discussion, Mike.

Okay, now to find a helmet and a hibachi and join you guys on 8/18. I sort of feel like I'm on a mission to show the Forester's versatility: Pine Barrens off-road/rough-roading (okay, once), backroads tarmac twisties (numerous times), now auto-x. Maybe a TSD in the future?

    Respect the Forester...

He can even borrow my helmet if he wants.

Forgot about that discussion over breakfast... Sunday was a long day.

I've got two spare helmets (fullface) one medium and the other, large. I'm sure one of them will fit.

    -Dave
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
I wear a 7 1/4 - 7 3/8 depending on maker. It's been hard to find places in the Philly area that sell Snell SA-rated helmets - ironic given the motorsports participation in the area. I'd been tempted to go try on, say, an Snell M-rated Bell and then order its SA-rated counterpart online.

Helmets are, like baseball gloves, an intensely personal item; they should conform to the user's body. Since helmets are more likely to be used to save your life than baseball gloves, you'd want one to fit as well as possible.

    Thanks for the offer.

    Ed-
A Snell with M rating will do just fine, and a lot more cheaper than the SA. I do believe that the only difference between the M and SA is that the SA has fire retardant material. I'm currently using a Snell M '00 rated HJC open face ~$100 tax incl'd.

    -Dave
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    I'm using a Snell 2000 full face @ ~$100.

    Mine is XXL

So I think we have every size that is offered available. At least for the first one. If you get hooked by all means buy a helmet, but for the first time, I'd use a loaner, especially a loaner from one of us.

    my bad :D
By what date? ASAP cuz once they have 80 registrant, it'll be closed and you go on standby on that day (August 18, 2002).

    -DAve
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
I registered for the 8/18 auto-x at the link paisan provided. I didn't get any kind of message to the effect that I would be on standby. If that's the case, will I still have to pay registration if I cannot run?

    Ed
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    You've registered, you're good to run. :D
You'll receive an e-mail confirming your registration.
No, you do not have to pay if for any reason you cannot run. I don't know about if you've already checked in and paid though that day.

    -Dave
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
and your Forester should complete the spectrum of Subaru that ran the AutoX. :D

    -Dave
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
It's still incomplete. Got to run the Outback Sport; first got to sneak it pass Mom. ;-)
    And... the Baja
Patti, If you still have it then, could I borrow it? :D

    -Dave

p/s Sorry 'bout the multiple post. Could remember within the 30 min. grace.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Have to run the SVX too and a brat and a 1st gen leggy, and an RX. But the lest popular should be covered soon enough.
