Yeah, they're rebuilding that narrow bridge there on Dorsey Mill Rd., I believe. That road has been closed since early this summer. :(

From your area, and when that road reopens, it's a quick way to I-70 East, and then onto I-95 North.

Bob: My father-in-law doesn't think it's worth the effort to drive so far west to avoid traffic (he's made the trip hundreds of times). Still, I'd love to figure out a way to avoid 95 in Connecticut/NYC on a weekday -- it's just no fun.

Serge: I'll email when the details are finalized.

juice: Yes, we left Thu. I was surprised at the amount of auto traffic at 4 in the morn. We had light-to-moderate traffic most of the way, which definitely helped my time. I maintained 7-8 above the limit most of the way.

Glad to see you posting again my regards and best wishs to your wife, I will pray that she beats this thing and that she has an easier time with the Chemo.

    Cheers Pat.

Once again, thanks to all for the warm words. Yes, we've become "family."

Juice, think of Florida for the warmth, clean beaches and warm waters. It's a place where you can bicycle all year 'round. As for snow--what's that? I've heard Siberia might be a place where you can find that white stuff all year long!

Don't tell me you've forgotten our beautifull Midwestern winters. Before long you'll be saying, "I really miss the change of seasons".

    Ron,

When I tell people here that any winter day in the Midwest with a temperature of at least 20 degrees above zero is a GOOD day, they look at me kind of strange. Yes, I'm sure we'll miss the seasonal changes. But, there is something grand about watching the new plantings blossom in late November! The fresh crop of begonias and impatiens do much to put a smile on our faces! Come on down and see for yourself.

    Serge,

Work off those frustrations by riding a bicycle for an hour or two! It's like magic.

Catching up a bit, but I went to the San Francisco Auto Show the day after Thanksgiving. Nothing new here, as usual -- the SF Auto Show trails all the other major ones (ie. NY, Detroit and LA) so everything on display has already been announced.

This year, Subaru took a premium spot in the South Hall -- front and center as soon as you walk in. In years past, they've usually been off to the side, but I'm guessing that they wanted to show off the WRX this time. Smack in the middle of the showfloor was a blue WRX sedan on a rotating illuminated display. The most popular Subaru model was a black WRX wagon -- there was a constant line of people wanting to sit in it.

One car to note was the Audi A4. I was impressed with the build quality and the overall improvements from the last model. I wasn't crazy about the the looks, but at MSRP below $30K, the 1.8T Quattro 5M was looking very tempting. Where's that Legacy GT Turbo to keep me in line!?

I also took a quick look at the new CR-V. Suprisingly, there weren't many people checking out this latest model. While I paricularly liked the rear seats, I really didn't care for the new front headlights and grille.

I'll remind you in Jan and Feb on how smart a move you made! At least you don't have to shovel begonias and impatiens.

    1. yes.
    2. yes. (and have used it too)

2 previous vehicles I had also had this 'feature': my 96 Stratus w/ autostick (even allowed starting in '3') and my 97 Chevy Z71. My moms' Malibu also has it, although I doubt she ever uses it.

    1. Yes, read it in the manual.

    2. Yes, but haven't felt the need when starting off. Personally like it for control while slow moving in snow/ice/generally crappy conditions, when you would prefer no upshifts or downshifts.

When I was a kid the Fords all did this, so I always look for its presence with automatics. Even though I hated Ford I thought it was a great idea. Like Brian, my wife's 97 Stratus ES also did this. The Forester with the AT is hers, mine is the 5MT.

hmm, so far it looks like SC owners actually read the effin' manual! ;-) wonder what the percentage is for 'normal' Subaru consumers?

    -Colin
    read his manual too
  • bigfrank3bigfrank3 Member Posts: 426
I was wondering the same thing. As long as he doesn't consider our results a "normal" distribution, the results could still be useful.

Since I order my new cars, and I go check them out as soon as they come in, before they are prepped, I go home with the manual before I go home with the vehicle. The dealers look at me like I am strange because I want to read the manual. :)

I didn't know it but now I'm gonna go try my dad's '97 out. My '88 XT6 doesn't have this as I auto-x it in 2nd and it definitely starts in 1st and uses 1st and 2nd. On my Trooper however I have a winter button (a power one too) which starts me in 3rd gear and I have used that before. I'd like to see the power/winter buttons on subarus, it makes it more obvious to the non-auto enthusiasts out there.

Remember we discussed this a while back about the 4EAT having this ability. I think we figured it started at least in the '97 or so models.

The '2' selection on our '00 OB AT definately starts in '2' and stays there until you shift it. I've even gotten it to start in a rolling '3' - coasting to about 5 mph and then accelerate. Although, when it does this, I usually push the accelerator pedal a little more to make it downshift or manually put it into '2'.

Since this my first AT after 35+ years of driving, I made the (erroneous) assumption that all automatics operated in this fashion. Having learned to drive in a high snowfall area (I took my exam in a major snow storm) it seemed as though all manufacturers would allow the driver to lock into a higher gear for superiour traction. Shows how much I know.

Yes and yes. The sales person told us this when he sold us the car. I've never had a problem getting going with a Subaru, but on ice with the stock all season tires it can be a bit tricky to stop. I do prefer the control our manual Subaru gave us but need the auto for city traffic.
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
Ryan: 1 - yes; 2 - yes, but not often.

Colin: I read the manual, but not well enough and not recently; see my shift interlock problem of a couple of weeks ago. If I'd read it thoroughly I wouldn't have gotten so wound up about it.

paisan: How would you recommend I shift if I ever try to auto-x? Back and forth between 1 and 2 manually? Shades of my old '79 Accord.

    Ed
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Ed, you'd have to do 1-2 you could probably get away with just leaving it in 1, it will probably automatically upshift @ redline even if you leave it in "1" You'll have to try it out.

tomorrow night? From what I have heard, it should be better than the last one we had since Edmunds is hosting it. I don't think we'll have the delay's that we experienced.

So, who all is going to join in?

Mark Lovell is the Open class champ in the US Rally. You bet I'll be there.

I got a season preview video at Da Big Meet, so I got to see him driving and talking about his car. It's phenomenal how quickly his car gets up to speed, seemingly instantly.

Ryan: I called my dad, who is more of your every day consumer, and does not RTFM. His answers are:

    1. Not a clue
    2. No, but only because he's never been wanting for traction in 1st given our light snows.

I suggest Drive write up a little tid bit about it, they seem to educate folks on lots of stuff.

Remember that the chat is going be packed--

Subaru of America is advertising it, Edmunds is advertising it, and there is a sticky thread on the iClub about it too.

Think I'll just read the transcript myself. I trust all of you in the teeming masses to ask some good questions. Now if Richard Burns gets a chat here... ;-)

Hosts - any news about the format? Will there be two rooms like last time, with a host reading and getting sample question from the public chat room and then pasting them into the read-only chat room?

Though I know Edmunds uses different software now.

dang, it'll be really late here in the morning for that chat.

Juice: me a player? You're mistaken. Okay, so I do hang out at the Maple Leaf (Canadian bar) alot so I can use my "Are you Canadian line?" :)

Ah .. the Robert Burns question: as British Correspondent, I will just say he's a good bloke and that if he must move on, well we wish him luck. And if he wants to come back after realizing his mistake, we'll be kind enough to pay him half his salary.

    ha ha

okay, i got to get back to pretending to work.

    I heard from Bob/pf_flyer.

"It's going to be a "normal" chat room and not the stage. Kirstie will be the host and the guest will simply be in the room with the users. Users will "raise their hand" if they have a question and Kirstie will call on people to type their questions. Might be a bit hectic at first, but it should work out. We wanted to keep it as simple as possible given the one bad experience we had with the chat stage.

I assume that we'll be opening the chat room about 15 minutes prior to the start time."

To borrow a phrase from Mr. Scott in StarTrek4:

    "Admiral, therrrrre be SNOW here!"
Started about 8am... still going strong now - 3-4 inches & counting!

    Time to go run errands!

    Cheers!

We are having good Subie weather here in Vancouver - 3 degrees, lots of rain with a bit of wet snow mixed in. I still wish we were having the real white stuff. Guess I'll have to drive 20 miles to the mountain top - Mt. Seymour has a bunch. Lucky dog you.

Just got some upgraded AT tires for my Trooper in 275-70-16 v. 245-7-16 that were stock. Itching for some snowy weather! I'm not sure if they make the Pirelli Scorpion AT in sizes for the Forester, but so far I'm impressed with them on the Trooper.
