    Oh that crystal ball is getting clearer...H6 VDC wagon in Timberline Green Metallic...with every conceivable roof mounted cargo carrier...and heavy duty aftermarket diff protector and skid plate....But what's this? A cloud...looks like Sean Connery...no, sounds like Connery...Finding a Forester? No, more like "Highlander."...

    Congrats, juice.

    on the baby, not the sliced hand!

    I have to agree with Ed - an H6 VDC wagon would do the trick.

    Greg, Thanks for the trip details. Ours are 4 and 8. On our Thanksgiving day trip to Boston, we left at 4am so the kids would sleep; had a little traffic.

    Loosh, Cool videos; kids enjoyed 'em, too.

    Juice, Contratulations! (sorry about your hand)

    Wife would not bite on an Outback wagon. Liked the Forester more, because she doesn't think it looks like a wagon.

    The H6 would be the sedan, actually. Fitz has VDCs for under $28k. When the $750 incentive returns, that would be about $27k, a deal. The non-VDC H6 sedan would be about $25k, hard to pass up on one of those.

    Fitz has one Highlander at $28k for a 4x2 V6, too pricey, at least for now. Add 4x4, fuggedaboudit.

    We'll wait to see the next Forester. If it is Legacy-based, or at least usefully bigger, we'll probably get that because it's one of very few choices that we both like.

    She likes the Maxima, Altima, Camry, Avalon, Highlander, and Forester. I like the Odyssey, MPV, and basically all the higher-end Subies.

    For a $25k or so price, I'd currently lean towards an H6 sedan or a 2004 Forester Turbo Premium.

    G'day

    Congratulations to you both. Hope the kid approves too. Of course, you could go my route and buy a nice comfortable car - a Subaru Outback

    Cheers

    I would in a heartbeat. You know my strong preference for wagons, but the wife insists on something that at least looks different.

    If the 2004 Forester comes out in March 2003, following the current trend, we could wait. The 2nd would only be 8 months old by then.

    Congratulation to both of you!!!
    Get a wagon anyway and remove the rearview mirror maybe she won't notice back there. :-D

    juice, I think the rear of a Legacy has a nice rake that makes it look quite sporty. It's not square like a traditional wagon like a Volvo or Ford Town Country Squire of yore. Mind you, I'd rather have a square for more capacity but I've grown to appreciate the design of the Legacy's rear.

    Dave: hehe, great advice.

    Don't get me wrong, folks, I'd pick the wagon over the sedan any day of the week. In fact, the lack of practicality in the sedan (no folding seat, tiny trunk) is what turns me to other niches.

    I'd almost rather get her a Legacy L sedan and then save our cash for a WRX STi or SVX to replace the Miata as our toy.

    I agree with Mike in post 6263. The current Legacy wagons are better looking than the current Forester. (Exception maybe to the Outback; the lower body cladding is better integrated in the Forester than the OB. Apologies to you who have bought SoA's bread and butter. The Legacy GT wagon is IMO the best-looking Subaru in the current lineup.) I especially like the Legacy wagons' rear windows - their design aids in rearward visibility. The power-to-weight ratio and handling at everyday speeds is what swayed me to the Forester (remember, no H6 or WRX in the product line at the time).

    Juice, it almost sounds as though you should give her your Forester, sell the Miata and the 626 and use the proceeds as down payment on some WRX variant. Oh, the choices!

    Congratulations to you and your wife, I hope everything goes well.

    Now what to do about a new vehicle, Oh the choices, I am glad that my wife loves the Tiotan as much as I do made it easy to pick a new car.

    Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    You're preaching to the choir, guys. I love the wagons, too. I talked my cousin and my dad into getting Outbacks, remember.

    But this is the wife's car and she has veto power on my recommendations. The Legacy and Outback wagons were vetoed, plain and simple. The Forester was exempted from the "no-wagon" rule simply because she doesn't think it looks the part.

    I tried the "you take the Forester" approach but she didn't find it fair that I always get the new car. We will keep 3 cars in the fleet, no question about that, so the 626 will go but the Miata will stay until Patti tells us the SVX roadster is on the way.

    I find the Legacy sedan handsome, too. Very distinctive C-pillar, sleek design. I'm just not a fan of sedans in general. But the wife is. She's coming from a V6 so the H6 is a natural choice, though she wants a 5 speed, so it would be a compromise for her (no manual) and for me (small cargo capacity).

    Ugh. Bring on the Blitzen, I say. She loves power and it would be worth the non-wagon compromise to me.

    If not, a turbo Forester would be different enough for us.

  • Hello, all!

    I just thought I would join the Subaru frenzy. My wife and I just purchased a used 2000 Subaru Legacy GT Limited sedan with manual transmission. It currently has 8,800 miles (low!), and has the Rio Red finish with tinted windows and a rear spoiler.

    The car is currently sitting in our garage. Thursday we will have an Invizibra kit installed to prevent the paint and lamps from being chipped up. It's been absolute torture letting it sit for the last week, but I'd rather wait until the Invizibra is installed before we take it out. What's worse is my area has received a ton of snow in the last week, and the Legacy would have been perfect in it.

    This is our first Subaru. Until now we've been Honda and Toyota fans. Any advice for maintenance and care of the Legacy sedans? Also, the manual mentioned you can't use snow chains on the GT models because of clearance issues. Will cables fit instead?

    Tyguy
  • twrxtwrx Member Posts: 647
    Ty, unless you live in the mountains or somewhere really extreme in the snow department I think you will not find a need for chains. My Forester went through one really big snow in its 4 years (about 15" snowfall) without any problems. (Yes I am a flatlander--Indiana).

    TWRX
  • Yep, we live in a snowy, mountainous state. Certain areas around us received as much as 100 inches of snow in the last week. Incredible.

    My wife and I will probably do a bit of boarding and snow shoeing this winter and in winters to come, and there are times where you are legally required to use chains, cables, or studded tires to drive through the canyons. Although we usually avoid the canyons during severe storms, it would be nice to have a set of cables in case we unexpectedly get hit with a storm while we're frolicking in the white stuff.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    I would consider dedicated snow tires, maybe even studded.

    Congrats, it's a rare find.

    Agreed with Juice. A 2000 GT 5 speed wagon is sweet. Love the BBS look wheels, rear spoiler and monochrome paint job. Especially in Rio Red. I test drove one that was a black 5 speed over in St. Louis 2 years ago and thought it would be my next car. Loved the red (read sportwagon!) Then Subaru quit making the red. So last spring I was still thinking about the GT wagon but finding a 5 speed is very hard. Also I like WR blue and a 5 speed WRX wagon is kinda sporty too, HEH HEH! Wife looked at a white GT limited sedan recently. Loved it and being a 2001 the dealer was asking about $3000 under list price. But she is not ready to buy yet and Subaru has also dropped the white. Come on Subaru, give us some bright colors for the GT!

    I have a 2001 Legacy GT wagon in Titanium, Now I know I am probably biased, but I think the Legacy GT is one of the best looking wagons on the road if not the best looking.

    Cheers Pat.
  • Actually, we bought a sedan, not a wagon. We have a Honda CR-V for toting the kids around (2 golden retrievers).

    You'll be happy to know that Subaru has re-introduced red into the L, GT, and GT Limited lineup for 2002, but it's a metallic red called Regatta Red Pearl.

    Like the 2000 GTs, though, I've never seen a red 2002 on the lot or on the road. Subaru just seems to be averse to red cars. Too bad since they look great in that color. I'm sure you can order it in color you want, and you may be able to score a great deal since demand is a little low right now. My local dealer was certainly willing to negotiate.

    Ty, I've seen an Outback H6 in the new red. Dull. To me even the red on tne wrx is better looking.

    Pat, like I said, I really like the BBS style wheels on one. All GT's look more like German cars than traditional Subarus.

    Congratulations Juice, that's great news! I wish you guys the best. Sounds like you're on the right track for a new car.

    I saw several Soobs in Regatta Red yesterday while shopping for an LL Bean, and it is indeed a nice color. I narrowed down my choices to Black, Regatta Red, and Timberline Green, and ended up going with Timberline even though it's the same color as my first Outback. I had them both parked in the driveway tonight, and it was kind of funny.

    OK, so you think the Aztec is ugly? Today, I saw a white Aztec with a black hood deflector, and it actually makes the "thing" look even worse. That owner must like homely looking cars!

    G'day

    This is probably the best solution for the rodent attackers which fancy Subaru wiring. My wife turned it up amongst some American Recipes. Beats me how an English born librarian, researching cookery from Australia, found it, but it might be kmclean's perfect Subaru repair

    SQUIRREL CAKES

    3 squirrels
    2 tablespoons bread crumbs
    1 onion, fine-chopped
    1 tablespoon catsup
    1/2 cup mashed potatoes

    Parboil squirrels in salt water for about 15 minutes, then remove all the good meat. Grind bits of meat and blend with the bread crumbs,
    onions, catsup, and mashed potatoes. Mix well. Shape into small flat cakes and saute' in hot bacon fat until well browned. Serves 4

    Cheers

    Tell those product planners we need a quick family hauler for Juice right away. Get them into the Christmas spirit at the same time...

    On Dasher, on Dancer, On Donner and Vixen!
    On Comet, On Cupid, On Prancer, On......

    um.....Heh heh, get 'em to fill in the blank, dammit.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Craig: I think we should call that deflector a face mask. The more camo, the better!

    I'm not too picky. Here is what I want:

    * AWD
    * ABS + 4 discs
    * traction + stability control
    * heated leather (easier to clean she says)
    * huge moonroof
    * 200+ horsepower
    * 20+ mpg on regular
    * wagon bodystyle, SUV look
    * 3 rows of seats a plus
    * 5 or 6 speed manual, or at least 5 speed auto
    * $30k street price

    So really nothing in the market today meets all these criteria. The VDC is close, and the Audi S6 Avant for about half price would work.

    Ty- Congrats! There is a endless supply of information here. I good search function would help but, ask anytime you have a question.

    juice - I think it's just a matter of bad timing. Subaru will most likely come out with something to meet those needs. Just not in your timeframe. I have several friends that would've bought a Subaru minivan if one had been available.
    It's funny how people perceive things differently. When my wife was shopping, she didn't like the Forester because she thought it looked like a squashed SUV. I think she was impressed with it though, following Ed in the hills of NJ/PA. :-)

    Why all the Cobras? Is it because this is all just Marine Expeditionary units and they never did get the Apache, or is the Apache too precious a hangar queen to endure all the sand?

    I bow to your professional knowledge..p.s. how is the wine job going?
    I look forward every year to making the latkes, scraped knuckles and all...I don't use a food processor, just an old fashoned grater..the blood gives it the extra Zing!

    Great news! Congratulations. I'm sure once Subaru finds out the news, they will try to put something together for you. :-) Actually, when I first married my better half she stated she "would never own a wagon". Now we have a wagon and a minivan. Go figure. But today's wagons are not the same as 15 years ago and are actually the next hot wave (replacing SUVs). The OB wagon is nice looking and she likes it. We trade off days driving it. Our 3 kids fit fine in the backseat with one in a car seat. Anyway, I'm sure the next Forester will be larger and you can always install an aftermarket turbo.

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
    Latkes, eh? The two cafes we passed on the drive through NJ make very good ones - they just call 'em potato pancakes.

    Thanks, Dennis. It helped that I was familiar with almost all of the roads we traveled. I actually think that the Forester looks a bit like a 2/3-scale FJ80 Toyota Land Cruiser. I actually like the Forester's looks from a rear three-quarter view, and I prefer the '98-00's taillamps to the 01-02's that spill onto the liftgate. Overall I did not buy the Forester for its looks though it, like the WRX, grows on me.

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    But I want a factory turbo. :-)

    We rented a Montana in Orlando this summer, and we liked the space, but it didn't help that the "check air bag" light came on and it wasn't a very competent package overall.

    She doesn't like huge vehicles, so something space efficient is critical.

    will be the Honda SUV coming out in 2002 (stablemate of the Acura MDX). I think the MDX is a fine vehicle, but somewhat overpriced for what you get. Incidentally, the MDX comes close to meeting most of your criterion, Juice, except for price. Perhaps the Honda version will be a better value.

    most dealers will add a huge ADM, right off the bat; and if you wait at all, there will be a huge waiting list too—even with this new factory coming on line.

    Loosh- No, the Marines were never fielded the Apache. Of course you're probably not too far off base with your question regarding the Apache being "too precious a hangar queen to endure all the sand?"
