Yep, Jake is there. I have a squeak in the rear that I want fixed, so I guess that's my excuse to take it there. Tischer in Silver Spring (where we bought) is much closer (especially during the work rush) but I don't know any of the mechanics there and the communication between the service reps and mechanics isn't exactly stellar (which I reported to SoA).

I can't really answer that without researching the going rate for a good original/restored model that's daily driveable. If it's okay I'll list a few antiques/classics that I'd like to have in my garage (no particular order):

'63 Studebaker Avanti R2
'63 Studebaker Lark Daytona hardtop
'66-68 International Travelall (after some thought, I'd rather have one of these than a Scout)
early '70s Volvo 1800ES

The only new vehicle I'd really want is a WRX wagon, though if you pushed me I could find room for a Chevy 1/2-ton 4x4 pickup. Maybe a Land Rover Defender 110 if they were reliable. I don't think I have the attitude for a BMW M3, though I'd like to rent one for a week.

Subaru WRX Wagon 5spd $25k

Provan Tiger CX Motorhome $65k (would not fit in my garage)

We sure have a wide variety of tastes here. IINM, every WRX requested, has been a wagon...

Interesting link here on Event Marketing. I've been to events put on by GM, Jeep, BMW and Mercedes. I think Subaru should be looking into this too.

Lark: do you get Autoweek? They had a tidbit about a 4 door Stude Avanti. I've never seen one in person, heck the 2 doors are rare!

Cost no object, a Defender V8 makes a pretty cool off road vehicle. But even the dream garage has its ceiling.

What about Club Slideways, run like a Rally camp? Or at least an autoX traction course with an instructor, to demonstrate AWD, LSD, and VDC? Bet it would help me convince the wife to go AWD.

Actually, now that I bring it up, it was raining pretty heavy this weekend and she kept spinning her front tires on her 626. I just rotated the tires and they are not worn, and they are all seasons. This despite FWD. I told her, "see, you could benefit from AWD".

(heh, actually I think the last installment of this was earlier this year... but hey.)

$25k - 5 speed WRX wagon
$30k - Chevy Trailblazer
$5k - enclosed trailer big enough for 2-3 motorcycles

$14k - Aprilia Mille RSV
a real italian sportbike-- pic here
$6k - Honda XR650R
mean dual sport, can be made street legal in my state. pic

$20k - Yamaha LSR2000
so what if it's a pair of smog-belching two strokes, it's a great boat for the money.

<< (heh, actually I think the last installment of this was earlier this year... but hey.) >>

You're probably right, but this seems to be a perfect time to express one's wish list.

After all, tis the season...

Why not a Honda XL? Those are already street legal.

Is the 650 a 2-stroke? Those do make more power. I had a 1987 XL250, single cylinder, 4 stroke, 4 valves per cylinder! It was great until a hair line crack in the carb let debris in and the pistons cracked the valve stems. $700 later is was great again, but then it was stolen. :(

-juice
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
in general make more power than 4-strokes. At least that used to be the case. I still think it's true, they just pollute more, and use more fuel—hence the switch to 4-strokes.

I used to have a 2-stroke 500cc Kawasaki Mach III triple, back in 1970. At the time, it was was the quickest bike you could buy. Faster (or as fast, depending on who you're talking to), than a 750 Norton Commando, or a CB-750 Honda, or a 750 BSA or Triumph triple; all of which were larger 4-stokes.

I'm suprised you'd get a trailblazer. I have been totally let down by them. That and the new ASSender from Isuzu.

• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's a fine engine in search of a better truck. I could not stand the interior, yuck.

2 strokes have twice as many power strokes as four strokes, but yes they consumer more and pollute more too.

1975 Buick Electra 225 Limited (nice looking cruiser)
2002 BMW M5 (to get the groceries)
1973 Ford Country Squire (always liked this)
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Talk about variety! Looks like you want to buy my dad's old Electra. He too had a love affair with it that I could just not understand.

juice: I have seen a 4-door Avanti in person. Strange bird. It wasn't built by Studebaker but by a successor in interest that bought the rights to the Avanti name and tooling. The only Stude Avantis were all 2-door hardtops and built 1963-64. Later Avantis came with Chevy 327s, then 350s, then 305s. Easier to maintain but bogged down by smog equipment and modern crash bumpers they lose some of their grace.

I didn't realize that Defender 90s and 110s are no longer sold new in the US. Could probably pick one up used, but that again is a pipe dream.

I'd go to Club Slideways; still looking for a good performance driving school that'll let you BYOC.

This is what I would want in my dream garage:

1) WRX 5spd Silver Wagon @ $24100 (Seems pretty popular here)
2) Cadillac Escalade (6.oL 8cyl) @ $50,800
-For my Dad- an old time Cadddy driver

Balance of $25100 to be used to restore
64 Triumph Spitfire
and 54 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup; then build a garage to keep them in!

re: trailblazer-- juice hit the nail on the head, it's the engine. seemed fine to me during a test drive... if I had $100k I wouldn't sweat the details! ;-)

re: XR650R-- it's near 60HP, the L is only 40ish. all you have to do here is buy the L's rear fender with brakelight & plate holder, and it's road legal.

-Colin
• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
You know it is probably one of the worst off-roaders of all SUVs (worst angles of approach and departure and weak A-arms) and if it's for on-road, it has a crappy AWD system and cheapo plastic dials. Other than the engine it's not good at all! IMHO

-mike
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Plus tires. The knobbies on the XR aren't street legal, and would go "roar-roar-roar" at high speeds like a lifted Jeep with swampers.

Semi-knobbies are legal, though.

I think the biggesr problem with any dealerships are the bloody service advisors they are nothing more than glorified salepeople.

For the hourly rate charged you should be able to speak directly to the Mechanic who will be working on the car, that way you would have a reasonable chance of having it fixed right the first time.

Cheers Pat.
• hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
My two dream cars would be Acura NSX, and a Wrx Wagon in Siver, that would pretty well make a big hole in $100,000 Canadian.

Cheers Pat.
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I agree, Pat. A friend of mine (coincidentally named Pat as well) worked at Ourisman Honda in Bethesda, MD, and said the service advisors you are talking about were generally overpaid to overcharge customers for service.

My wife's car still has axle noise despite the boot replacement. It's really aggravating, and will be back in the shop again. It almost feels like they replaced the boot without putting grease.

mike, good thing I didn't ask for your opinion. ;-) mundane part-time 4WD is great for me, and off-road is for motorcycles.

-Colin
• hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
You may already have gotten grit in the CV. joint, it does not take much to screw them up.

The last time I had split boots on my last Honda it was almost as cheap to replace the drive shafts as it was the boots.

Cheers Pat.
• Here we go:

1. Modified Jeep Wrangler: $35,000 (Dana axles, air lockers, body and suspension lifts, tires, snorkle, winch, air compressor, air tools, spare parts (for trail damage), Rubicon racks, hot tub (I mean it!!!), and much, much more). That ridiculous price is exactly why my wife and I rent Jeeps when we bump around the Moab, Utah, backcountry.

2. Subaru Legacy GT Limited sedan: $25,000

3. Acura MDX: $35,000

Hey, I even came in under budget. If you count 6.25% Utah sales tax, though, I'm a bit over.

On another note, I finally had the Invizibra installed on my newly-acquired 2000 GT Limited sedan and have been racing around Utah for the last couple of days. What a blast! It feels like I'm driving a V6 even though it has 4 cylinders. My first Subie is quickly impressing me.

Ty
• Did the CV boot tear before it was replaced? Hondafriek is right about CV joints, almost any amount of dirt will permanently damage the joint. If the boot tore before it was replaced, it's likely the joint is damaged.

The labor to replace the boot is the same as it is to replace the axle. You just pay a bit more for the CV half shaft part. If you shop around you should be able to find a rebuilt CV half shaft for around $120.

What do you get if you are one of the early-birds to this Thursday's chat??? Subaru has offered a a "Swix Knitted Ski Hat" for the first fifteen people who show up (let's say from 5:55 pmPT/8:55 pmET)to the chat.

The Edmunds.com chat moderators,Bob and Todd, will note the usernames of the first 15 attendees and direct them to email their usernames, real names, and mailing addresses Edmunds.com. The information will be forwarded onto Subaru, who will mail out the hats.

I think we will be seeing more promotions like this in the future.

Ty, can you tell us more about the invisibra? Is it the clear plastic laminate stuff?

Pat, I wholeheartedly agree. The dealerships in my immediate area don't let you near the garage (insurance liability, which I understand), but hey, that's where the mechanics are.

Well I just bought my next auto-x car. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=598802774&r=0&t=0

Hopefully when I go pick it up it will check out and be as advertised.

• There are different brands out there (ClearBra is the most common), but they're basically all the same. Invizibra is made by 3M and comes with a 4-year warranty against peeling, cracking, shrinking, or yellowing. The shop that installed mine has been using the brand for 5 years, and hasn't had one come back yet.

Invizibra (and its counterparts) is a clear plastic "sticker" that's placed on the most vulnerable portions of the car, like the first twelve inches of the hood and fenders and painted side mirrors. You can get a kit for the bumper, too, but it's pretty expensive. There's also a kit for your headlamps and foglamps, and this kit uses a much thicker plastic. The plastic is so clear that I only notice the line where the plastic stops on the hood. If I had known about this when I bought my '00 CR-V, I definitely would have passed up the bug guard and instead used Invizibra.

I wound up protecting the hood, mirrors, headlamps, and fog lamps on my Legacy for $269. The fenders on '00 to '02 Legacys aren't pronounced much, so the kit didn't cover them.

Mike- Congrats & good luck with the new car.(Whatever it is- can't access ebay at work(: )

Ty- With Invizibra, do you have the problem of moisture getting trapped underneath that I have heard of with regular bras or deflectors?

Mark
• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
New auto-x car is a '91 XT6 5-speed AWD :) Picking it up for $1100. It needs some TLC (suspension and PS hoses) but other than that it seems to be in good shape.

-mike
• No problems with moisture that I know about. Since the plastic is literally adhered to the paint, there's a tight seal between the paint and plastic. If you ever decide to remove the Invizibra you can peel it off. It leaves behind a residue (from the glue) that can be cleaned off with alcohol.

I am a bit behind in my reading and just had a good laugh over your post. I do remember those snails when my wife, daughter and I drove thru the Cutswolds (probably massacred the spelling - northwest of Oxford) a few years ago. Truly beautiful countryside, but the trailers can get annoying. Luckly we had a decent car and I did a lot of passing. High line Ford Mondeo hatchback.

It was incredibly different from the Contour that Ford dumped on the US market. Why do the automakers produce a 'world car', then gut it of all driving pleasure when they build it for America???

Steve
• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
They gut them for the US market because we will still buy them at a high price with little content. What incentive is there for auto manufacturers to put quality high end equipment in a car that people will still buy even with crappy low grade stuff?

I think I hit the jackpot when I started using Flemington Subaru. The s.a.'s there are the most knowledgeable I've ever met. They know of most of the common "issues" (clutch shudder, etc.) The door to the garage is a couple of feet away from the check-in counter. Every time I've taken my car in for a problem, there has been a tech there to speak to. They also have no problems letting people into the garage. At my last dealer, I was only able to speak to a tech once in two years.

good find - hope it pans out for you.

you gonna remove the air suspension on this one?

-Brian
• locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
mike, that seems like a decent find for a little over $1000.

-Colin
• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
We'll see if it is actually as good as the pics/description indicates. Yep the plan is to take out the air-suspension. I'll be looking for 2.5RS struts for the front again. :) I figure it will be a great auto-xer since the 50/50 split + MT should net me better performance than the 90/10 + AT.

• c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
www.clearbra.com has a kit for 00-02 Outbacks that covers the leading edge of the hood and mirrors for $99. Seems like a good deal, and I may order one. Only thing, I'm not sure I want to do the install myself. I have installed adhesive graphics on boats before, and it's not always simple.

You do gain quite a bit of flexibility by spraying the film and vehicle surface down with soapy water (later squeegeed out) while positioning, but I think OCD would make this tougher than it should be (ie, since it's MY car this time). Anybody installed this stuff before? I may look around for a local installer.

Has anyone had to deal with cleaning/changing this filter? There's no info in the owners manual and I'll be damned if I'm gonna take it to the dealer all day just to have it done. Wanna know where it is.

I'm not sure what model you have but here are instructions for MY2000+ Legacy (Forester & Impreza also on website):

Hosting the instructions is a valuable service to the Subaru community, please consider buying from subaru-parts.
