So keep your eyes out for a flatbed trailer for me. I can probably get a new one for $1200-$1500 but if anyone comes across a flatbed I'd love to know about it.

Congrats, paisan. That paint looks to be in great shape, and I like those rims, too.

I've seen you drive - you don't need A/C, just open the windows for a blizzard of air! ;-)

Did you borrow that trailer in the photo?

I'm expanding my back yard play area, so I'll be trailer shopping again in the spring. I'll probably need about 9 yards of wood chips per year, at least, and that's a good 3 loads, big ones.

Alternately, I'll just have it delivered. It may be cheaper that way, since I'd only need it once a year. Plus they can deliver 9 yards in one load, easy.

The paint is in great shape, but it's a re-paint and you can tell it is a re-paint. But on the flip side it doesn't have rust except one of the front fenders which it almost totally rusted and around a few of the logos. A/C is not much of a priority for me at this point, I want to get the clutch/bearing problem done and then the PS pump sorted out and the rear suspension.

Naval Jelly that bad boy. Use a paint brush, apply several coats, the rust dissolves slowly. Then prime and paint.

Works as long as it's not rusted all the way through the metal. The badges ought to be easy.

Sounds like a fun project, enjoy it.

I was hoping Photopoint would be up again by now, but guess not. I've removed the photos generating from there. If anyone gets the word they're back, let me know and I'll include them on the page again.

    G'day

Recommendation for Juice. Go the home delivery route. It is a lot less hassle and you can persuade your family members to come around and help shift the mountain of wood chips off the drive. This is a good excuse for a social event and only costs you a case of beer.

The kids will love skiing the slopes of Mount Woodchip and you will acquire a tasteful woodchip flecked carpet where they traipse the bits through the house.

In addition, you can check out the Forester's AWD getting over the mountain of chips in the driveway and persuade your wife of the need for a Forester for her as well.

    Cheers

You know, I actually pictured driving over that pile of wood chips. :D

That's probably what I'll do. The place that sells the stuff is a good 20 minutes away (each way), and I'd need at least 3 trips.

I began reading posts on this board during the summer, bought my OBW back in September, and began contributing regularly shortly thereafter. What has impressed me most about this community is the civility of the members, the respect shown to those with divergent views, and the quickness and thoroughness of the responses to peoples questions. A decent group of people, good moderators, etc.

If you want to see the opposite, take a look at the last few days of posts on the Honda Odyssey Problems board. A true cat fight. Seems there are a group of Honda and Dodge/Chrysler minivan owners who get their kicks 'dive bombing' each others sites. It really came to blows a few days ago. Someone from Edmunds needs to step in and wipe out a half dozen pages of garbage. Really sad....

    I noticed that, too.

We're lucky - only a few trolls have made their way here, and they don't stay for long.

I think the DCX fans have been getting an earful from some Honda owners for decades, so a merely "average" Odyssey (in terms of reliability) is about the best target they have. You also have a best-seller vs. best-in-class rivalry going on there.

I couldn't agree more. It's a real credit to the Crew "regulars" that post hear. I don't want to mention names at the risk of offending someone by inadvertendtly not mentioning them, but I consider this board a REAL service to all the Sube owners.
Having Patti pop in from time to time and help people with problems is not only icing on the cake but also lends a certain 'credibility' to the proceedings.
    Thanks to all of you!

I enjoy this place much more than the iClub anymore. It's the atmosphere.

Although I must admit, the iClub cannot be matched when it comes to looking for specific knowledge. Full text searching and a whole lot of discussions does that...

also. I may not understand all the technical talk..I haven't been mechanically inclined since I took apart my father's sewing machine in his workshop in Paris at the age of 4 (I actually put it back together and it worked!)... but all of it is much appreciated, along with the jokes, pictures, and camaraderie here. I wish we were closer to you guys up there..would love to take part in the drives and get-togethers...maybe in a few years when we leave the flat state.

They have thousands of members, and proportionally more resources (by that I mean people), because everything is Subaru-specific. But you can't keep up with all the threads, and the signal/noise ratio here at Edmunds is the best.

In fact, AN published data from a survey, and they found Edmunds.com was the "Most Useful" web site among all the automotive sites. No doubt due to the Town Hall.

I'm contemplating trading up for another AWD vehicle from my present 00 GT Ltd. I'm looking at all A/T only so both the wife and I can use the car. Would I be getting anything more than power out of the following vehicles:

    02 Audi A4 Quattro
    02 Volvo V70 2.4T
    02 Volvo S60 2.4T
Next generation 530Xi (when it becomes available)

I'm thinking about a lease for tax purposes with the option to buy. Otherwise, I'm happy with the GT. Anyone test driven any of these vehicles and have comparisons to the GT?
  • twrxtwrx Member Posts: 647
I used to correspond on the VMAG Forester/OB forum. The same was true there. Very few flames and trolls but don't go to ones on other sport ute brands. Funniest of course are the boards for the shall we say "large" SUVs. Generally it is attack of the rabid environmentalists. Can't say that I disagree but really a waste of time.

are getting me all choked up. I was discussing this board with my wife last night and mentioned I want to meet some of you. Maybe at the Philly or (more likely) NY auto show. She is now convinced I have gone over the edge with Subaru. (But how could I, it's AWD!) ;)

    Greg
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
I haven't driven any of the other vehicles, but, I will give my $0.02 anyway. With the A/T you might find the Audi has a smoother powertrain, but, I think it is partly due to the low ratio of Subaru's 1st gear. As for Volvo, I feel they are overpriced and don't match their price in terms of performance and fit & finish. Either way, a GT will cost much less.

Have fun test driving and gives us updates,

"She is now convinced I have gone over the edge with Subaru. (But how could I, it's AWD!)"

I love it, LOL. I feel the same way as many have expressed. I retired as a certifiable car nut about 1979 when my son was born. Despite this, I read these boards every day I can simply because:
    1. I love my Forester.
    2. I am interested in Subaru.
    3. I really enjoy the fun, supportive and knowledgeable posts that are the rule rather than the exception here.

I agree with all of the positive comments regarding the Subaru board(s). While I haven't been an active participant I have been checking in often since I purchased my 2000 Outback Ltd in July of '99 (wasn't delivered until Nov. but that is an old story).

For a time I was considering trading my '95 Buick Riviera for a luxury sedan, the Lincoln LS being one. I followed their board for a few weeks (hard to believe that there we so many unhappy LS people) and that together with the information on the Subaru Boards was enough to convince me that I would be much better of with another Subaru (Forester)...which was delivered last week.

Check out the cover of the January issue of "Turbo & High-Tech Performance" magazine (or website www.turbomagazine.com). The issue is basically devoted to Subaru WRX. OK, we are not talking "Motor Trend" here, but it is better than no press coverage at all......

BG -actually, those all have a few characteristics in common:

    * higher price
    * premium fuel required
    * less fuel efficiency

    ;-)

I drove the older A4 2.8 at the Mercedes Power Trip, but not the new ones. It didn't really stand out to me, I hardly remember it. The engine was peaky, and needed to rev, but it's been replaced with a better 3.0l engine. The 1.8T I tried in a Passat was more fun, but it too requires premium. They are smaller and likely less reliable than your Legacy.

Pros? Looks like a Baby A6, cachet, easy to chip 1.8T, Quattro option, free maintenance, fits in at the country club.

I've driven a Volvo XC, and was totally disappointed. The ride is floaty as a Buick, pass the dramamine. I bet the regular V70 is better, but until this year AWD was not offered. Price is high, pillars block your view, and too many different colors on the interior IMO. Reliability is poor, read up on the threads here, and check CR.

Pros include perceived safety, luxury status, excellent brakes, styling (S60), cargo capacity (V70), passenger space.

Hard to say bad things about the 5 series. Drove a couple at the BMW Ultimate Driving event. They are pricey and AWD will push the price to nose bleed levels, but if you can afford it I would not stop you. Subaru has better reliability, and the 5 series sedan is still only a compact. Recalls have plagued some newer Bimmers, including possible engine fires.

Pros include acceleration, smooth engine, ride, handling, interior, quality of materials, style, cachet, free maintenance.

Among the 3, I'd probably pick, in order, the BMW, then the Audi, then the Volvo last, with big gaps between each one.

But consider the VDC or the LL Bean wagon. I prefer even my dad's H4 Outback Limited over the Volvo XC, so I'm sure an H6 with the features in the VDC would equal or even beat the Audi, and for much less.

Okay, you've confirmed what I believed. I think I'll wait for a 530Xi to appear perhaps in 2003. It will probably be priced at 55K. On the VDC and LLBean, give me a monochrome paint scheme option and then we can talk. Two-tone paint is an automatic disqualification (IMO: stick my finger into the back of my tongue ugly). Well, it's not that bad, but I don't care for it. The Legacy wagons look so much slicker with the monochrome scheme. Perhaps they'll announce a 2003 B4 or Blitzen, or perhaps Subaru won't. At least offer the 3.0 in the GT already. I'll wait until I fully depreciate the Odyssey for business, then I'll get the Bimmer assuming it isn't ugly like the new 7.

Whenever someone asks me about the benefits of an online community, I point them to the Crew. It's a great pleasure to be your host here at Edmunds.com, although I sometimes feel my presence isn't necessary. With juice, miksmi, and Patti, my job is very easy. :-)

Happy holidays to all the Crew!

What continues to impress me most about the "Crew" (in addition to the vast store of knowledge and the willingness of members to share) is that the Crew has become "family" to so many of us. Note how many reports of daily visits, etc. Perhaps this is a major reason "visitors" find so much civility and, yes, even compassion! This is truly a unique site.

All right everybody, group hug! :-)

Must be the holidays that's got everyone in such a sentimental mood. I'll have to drop in over on the "I hate SUVs" board to reaffirm that humans are naturally mean and vindictive :-)

I couldn't have said it better myself. It's been about a year since I've been here now almost a year since I met a few people at the Philly car show.
There's a nice, well rounded mix of people here. Plus, I met a distant cousin I never knew (lark6).

It'll finally cool down here in DC next week, so if we get any precip it might be the fluffy white stuff. Hope so!

You guys want to hear something warm and fuzzy? Remember Gloria, who came here to ask for advice on her next car? Well, she ended up buying a Maxima, but it was a real treat to read her post on a thread about Favorite Topic. She paid us the highest complement. Note that everyone else was claiming their topic was best - she was the only one I recall that gave the nod to a type of car she didn't own.

BG: what you want is the Blitzen. We should get something like that for 2004 or 2005, and I can't wait. Is a WRX STi too small for you? It's about the same size as an A4.

    ROTFL, Frank!

It's been getting really cold, so the Miata's been parked for a while now. I realize the things I love about my Subie: comfort, space, warmth, quietness, smoothness, higher vantage point, and low-end torque.

Even though I have only been a part of this board for a couple of months, I also feel that if I don't check it at least once a day, that I'm missing something! I wish I could "actively participate" a little more, but I really appreciate all the answers and guidance everyone has given me as my OCD sets in! I wish I weren't so far south so that I too could meet some of you like in the "48 hours" or something. I read a couple of the posts above out loud to my wife who mumbled that Edmunds should start a "Subaru Widows" board!
  • twrxtwrx Member Posts: 647
Ha, we are all such good friends! Wait till the first snows hit! If we don't get snow around here in Southern Indiana I won't like you people anymore if you do. Evil, wicked bad mood Subie fanatics when the other guys get snow and you don't!

I referred a car shopper on the General Forum of www.westcoastwine.net over here, and she loved the Crew; she just lurked, but bought a Forester.

Been getting comments on the GT lately; I think those 16x7 RS rims help, as the extra width adds just a little more beef to the look of the car from 3/4 and front/back. Folks at emissions wanted to know if it was a turbo :( Others said they liked the look of the BD better than BH (sorry Miksmi) and a couple of gentlemen downtown referred to it as "phat." That made me chuckle...then again they were in a Neon.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Invite her back, she's got great taste all around (cars and vino). We have chat tonight, matter of fact. :-)

I wish PHAT meant pretty, hot, affordable, & turocharged!

A question for all you "insiders":
I just purchased a set of "winter wheels" (Blizzak package) from TireRack (see Outback board if you'd like a report) and I'm now trying to locate a set of Subaru center caps for them. The wheels themselves are steel, painted nicely in metaliic silver, and the invoice implies they are genuine Subaru wheels (although that may be just my take on it). Anyway, the wheels look pretty nice as is, almost "styled", and so I'm disinclined to put wheel covers over them. However, the hubs are at present fully exposed so I'm looking for center caps (I could take them off my wife's Forester, but she'd have to notice sooner or later). Any suggestions on sources other than my local full-retail-or-higher Subaru dealer?

    Thanks in advance,

all my albums..approx 130 -140 of them...my B&O turntable however is not functioning..tone arm needs lubrication, so I'm told. The first time I heard Alice's Restaurant was at my cousin's house in the Bronx at Thanskgiving...all the kids were upstairs and the adults downstairs. My cousin was an insect and butterfly collector and had all these huge beetles and other gross insects in display cases on the wall of the den...gave me nightmares...Ross, can you help me?
